Friday 10th June 2016 Our News!

A big thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and carers who came to help prepare and plant our garden for the Carleton Green in Bloom Competition. You were all so generous providing us with beautiful plants, vegetables, scarecrows and other decorations. Also thank you to Mr Peters who came with his drill to help us make welly boot planters! They look amazing! On the same afternoon the children also helped make a mini-beast hotel in the Little Chicks garden.

We will be looking forward to seeing which creatures move in!

This week the children have learning all about the Queen as part of her 90th birthday celebrations. They have made birthday cards, written party invitations and posters for a garden party, decorated bunting and flags, made party crowns, sang the National Anthem, painted portraits of the Queen and enjoyed eating cucumber sandwiches and cakes at our rather wet garden party!

In mathematics the children have been exploring capacity, finding out how many objects it takes to fill a container, pouring sand and water through funnels into different sized containers and ordering containers according to their capacity.

In PE the children have been creating dances to show the changes from a caterpillar to a butterfly, exploring moving in different ways and in and out of spaces carefully.

STARS OF THE WEEK Summer Way for being an all-round super star, always working hard and trying her best!

OUR LEARNING Sports Day, Healthy Living Week and Father’s Day We will be holding our Sports Day on Monday, providing the weather is okay!

The children have been busy practising for their races. Please ensure that all children have their PE kits in school, a water bottle, sun cream and sun hat.

As part of our healthy living week we will be making fruit smoothies, sorting foods that are healthy and unhealthy, creating a healthy plate for tea-time and setting up a fruit and vegetable shop in our role play area. We will read ‘The Sports Day’ by Nick Butterworth and ‘I will never eat a tomato!’ by Lauren Child and talk about the need for a healthy and varied diet.

Outside we will explore how our vegetable patch is coming along and use our senses to find out more about the herbs. We will also carry out lots of physical challenges such as finding out how many star jumps we can do in a minute and kicking a ball at different targets.

As part of our Physical Development of Health and Self-care we will be starting our road safety programme. Please ensure that your child returns the permission slip and brings a coat to school each day. Thank you.

In mathematics we will continue our work on capacity, as well as finding out what sharing is. We will explore sharing fruit and vegetables during snack-time and sharing toys between our friends.

We will also be reading ‘My Dad is Brilliant!’ by Nick Butterworth in order to help us think about our own Dads! It would be lovely to have some Dads or Grandads to come in and help us in class next week, even if it is only for half an hour or so! Please see your child’s class teacher if this is something you would like to do.

REMINDERS Warmer Weather Please can all children bring a water bottle to school each day? Sun hats and sun cream (clearly named) are also needed. Please show your child how to apply this carefully or apply a long lasting cream on them before school on days when it is needed. Thank you.

We do love to learn outdoors, so it is advisable to send a light weight coat in each day, in case of rain!

Junk Materials We are always in need of materials such as kitchen rolls, egg boxes, cereal boxes and so on for our work shop area!

Healthy Living Bring in photographs of you being active or healthy at home, such as making a fruit salad, going on a bike ride or going to an active club such as dance or gymnastics outside of school.

Fruit Smoothies Next week we will be making fruit smoothies. Please see your child’s class teacher if your child has any allergies or if you are concerned.

TALK HOMEWORK Talk for Numbers Practise sharing. Have a teddy bear’s picnic and share out the plates, cups, food, etc.
