Unity ACADEMY Smoking Policy 2016-2019 This policy on smoking at school forms part of the FCAT Health and Safety Policy arrangements. Introduction Unity Academy acknowledges that smoking and breathing other people’s tobacco smoke is both a public health hazard and a health issue. Unity Academy Blackpool aims to provide a safe working and learning environment for both students and staff and to this end Unity Academy supports a no smoking policy. From the 1st July 2007 new laws on Smoking were introduced. The governing body support the Head teacher in all attempts to ban smoking within the school grounds. This policy statement makes it very clear that the governing body does not allow smoking to take place at Unity Academy.
This Policy aims to: • Provide an environment where good health is promoted for all. • Highlight to all who use this school site that it is a ‘smoke free’ environment. • Enable the school to tackle smoking-related issues. • Raise awareness of the dangers associated with exposure to tobacco smoke. • Satisfy Section 2(2) (e) of the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974, which places a duty on employers to provide a working environment for employees that is ‘safe, without risks to health, and adequate as regards facilities and arrangements for their welfare at work.’ • Comply with the smoke free legislation under the Health Act 2006 Chapter 28.
Smoke free legislation means: That virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces as well as vehicles used by the public and used by more than one person are required to be smoke free. This means: • It is against the law to smoke in smoke free premises or vehicles. • It is against the law for people who control or manage smoke free premises or vehicles to fail to prevent smoking from taking place. • It is against the law for people who occupy or manage smoke free premises or vehicles to not display the required no-smoking signs Review April 2019
