1. Adopt a School This is a scheme organised by Class of Your Own whereby a member organisation (or consortium ) commit to funding a minimum 2 year programme providing recognised construction relevant qualifications to young people.

3. Business in the Community (BITC) – Business Class They believe that the best and most effective way for businesses to support young people facing social disadvantage is to form long term partnerships with the schools that those young people attend.

Currently there are over 290 business class partnerships across the UK. BITC aim to increase this to 500.

The core philosophy is that the school is the client and so using a detailed needs analysis assessment head teachers can define the priorities that they want their business partner to help with. This can be across 4 key areas: •

4. Careers Lab As young people enter the workforce many find they are chasing jobs they don’t necessarily have the relevant skills for. On the other hand, businesses have vacancies and are crying out for more skilled workers. Now more than ever it’s imperative for businesses to inspire and support young people moving into the world of work and to address the skills gap.

Careers Lab does this by enabling schools and businesses from a variety of industries to work together to equip young people with the inspiration, knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the UK economy.

The programme works alongside existing careers teaching to provide a modular, progressive framework of lesson and activity plans designed to enrich students’ understanding of career paths and open their minds to the possibilities of the working world.

5. Career Point – Labour Market Information On the Career Point website you will find lots of labour market information covering a range of employment sectors with a focus on skills demands and growth areas. There is information on each local authority area in Greater Manchester, and a news page detailing developments across the region. An Apprenticeship section provides access to latest apprenticeship/traineeship vacancies together with case studies and information on sectors and providers.

Hundreds of staff working with young people across Greater Manchester are using the website www.careerpoint-gm.co.uk and almost 800 have undertaken CPD that provides them with the knowledge required to support their students and service users with their career planning.

Tier 1 training – the CPD package on offer – is a series of six self-study modules, intended as an introduction to CEIAG (career education, information, advice and guidance). Each module has been designed to be completed in 20-30 minutes and is suitable for staff working with 11-19 year olds in any context. Schools including Levenshulme High and North Chadderton High have worked with us to provide the training to every member of staff; youth service teams and local authority staff have also achieved certification.

6. Career Ready Career Ready is a UK wide charity linking employers and schools and colleges to try to open up the world of work for young people.

Its objectives are: •

7. CV Plus The site has two core functions/features: •

It helps users to build a CV which can be saved and printed

It allows users to create a ‘wall post’ or a digital record of achievement which can include photos, multi-media content, text, testimonials etc and can be saved and if required tagged to applications for work, training or learning

8. Enabling Enterprise

They declare that they offer a ‘complete approach to transforming students’ enterprise skills’. The activities they offer focus on developing and improving the 8 core skills – teamwork, leadership, listening, presenting, aiming high, staying positive, problem solving and creativity.

Enabling Enterprise work in partnership with over 80 ‘top businesses’ and have a base in Manchester.

There are a variety of programmes on offer ranging in cost from £2,000 to £9,000.

It enables students to research, develop and collect information about career opportunities and the skills and training required.

It is a valuable part of the Young Chamber package providing a safe and secure online environment.

They also run the Skills Factory competition and the next one is due in 2016.

GOV.UK ‘The best place to find government information and services.’ The site includes links to all the main government departments and is the place to start searching for apprenticeships; applying for a student loan; and for registering and using Universal Jobs Match as well as numerous other services.

13. Growing Ambitions Strap line: the best place for teachers and business to find schemes aimed at young people.

Growing Ambitions work in partnership with Education and Employer Taskforce and the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

For businesses they help them connect with schools, and in turn help schools engage with their students. Businesses can enrich learning and showcase industry to the next generation of young people For teachers they help identify suitable schemes that provide curriculum supported lesson plans, careers advice and local visits and work experience.

Basically it is a matching website.

14. Horses’ Mouth Horses’ Mouth is a social network for informal mentoring which allows users to search for a mentor or to volunteer to be a mentor. In addition there is a bank of inspirational profiles and stories to view.

Mentors are available in 3 broad areas: •

Life which includes subsets such as relationships and families; health and well being; your rights; and others

Work which includes subsets such as choosing or changing a career; getting a job; starting a business; and others

•

15. I Could I Could describes itself as ‘a small dynamic charity providing career inspiration and information for young people’ It basically offers a website of videos though it does have some other features. You can search by job type or your favourite subject and explore videos or you can find out what you’re like and what jobs would suit you by taking the buzz quiz.

As well as the career videos and buzz quiz there are also job information and more general articles some with focus on key decision points. There are also regional information labour market information pages, though the one for the NW only focuses on Liverpool and Manchester.

16. The Ideas Foundation The foundation’s aims are: •

To increase diversity in the creative industries

To identify and nurture creatively gifted young people who are not thriving in the education system

Programmes: I Am Creative – is aimed at teaching 13-19 year olds about the creative industries and then giving them the chance to deliver on a live creative brief. In addition they also deliver enhanced creative programmes in schools.

Incubate – works with a limited number of schools in the North-west bringing specialist industries employees into the class room to work intensively with young people on projects across the digital and media communications sector.

17. IMI Autocity The automotive industry influences everyone, from delivering goods on time to commuters travelling to work and emergency services being able to respond to crises, the motor industry helps to keep the country moving.

Autocity is the one-stop-shop for careers information and advice on careers in the Retail Motor Industry. Whether you are an individual looking to start or progress your career, or a teacher or careers advisor who supports others in making their career choices.

The site includes a search facility for apprenticeships in the automotive industry.

18. Inspiring the Future There are also Inspiring Women and Inspiring Primary programmes Strap line: ‘could you spend one hour to inspire young people?’

It is run by the charity ‘Education and Employers’ and aims to connect state schools and colleges with employers and people from the world of work. The Lead Corporate sponsor is Bank of America, Merrill Lynch.

Volunteers pledge one hour a year to help in a state school or college near where they live or work.

This is usually giving a talk about their job and career route. Though employers can offer help with CVs, interview practice, numeracy and literacy and take up a role as a school governor.

The website uses the concept of online match making.

19. The Job Junction The Job Junction acts as a gateway for employers and partners to fruitfully engage with the schools and their young people.

Their mission is to embed a Job Junction in every school in the UK – through a ‘dynamic network of licensees’ – which will allow students of all ages to: 1. Discover their natural talent and develop this talent in a supported environment 2. Identify aspirational and credible career paths and taking responsibility for their own success – making informed choices 3. Practice and hone employability skills which are measured and developed to labour market standards, with input from real employers 4. Gain real world experience by being part of their school’s DREAM team (supporting their fellow students) 5. Establish credible connections with employers that will serve them post education The Job Junction is a physical space within an institution. The livery and branding is closely controlled. The termly programme is delivered within this space.

20. Jobzone

Jobzone is a website that allows you to search thousands of jobs and apprenticeships throughout the UK. The first step is that you must select your age group between 14-17 or 18 and over.

22. Mosaic

Strap line: ‘the power of positive thinking’ Mosaic was founded by HRH the Prince of Wales. It aims to inspire young people from disadvantaged communities to realise their talents and potential. Mosaic does this via mentoring programmes in schools and prisons. The mentors are volunteers and they aim to lift the aspirations of the young people and help that young person close the gap between those aspirations and their attainments.

Mosaic operates in Burnley and Pendle as well as in Manchester, Bolton and Rochdale.

23. Plotr The key feature of Plotr is a career themed questionnaire. I completed it and my top jobs were – Occupational Health and Safety Specialist; Management Consultant; Editor; humanitarian Worker; Learning Mentor; Energy Broker; Rehabilitation Counsellor; Special Needs Teacher; and Funeral Director.

I have done numerous career questionnaires in the past – usually Cascaid ones such as Kudos and Adult Directions- and the only jobs that have come up on those similar to the suggestions from Plotr are editor and funeral director. Also factors such as qualification level; skills profile; or health do not seem to be taken into account.

There is also a list of organisations that can help and one of the links is for ‘Connexionslive’- the former website of Greater Merseyside Connexions Partnership’. The link now takes you to the website of Career Connect. It always worries me when things are obviously out of date on a website The Plotr website has lesson plans links to key career resources. 24. Prospects Obviously in many arenas Prospects are a competitor but their distribution services arm based in Cumbria is the main if not the only ‘one stop shop’ for priced careers resources and materials including software and posters.

They offer an exhibition service though depending on the nature of the event there may be a charge for this.

26. Skill Explorer Skill Explorer provides a flexible and dynamic programme led suite of features designed to raise standards and improve the efficiencies and cost effectiveness of the delivery of CEIAG and work/skills based learning across KS3,4 and 5.

The programme has a Teachers’ Zone and a Students’ Zone. Among the features of the latter are: • My Skill Explorer student dashboard showing, favourites, skills reports and their journey and preferences in the world of work.

27. Skills to Succeed Academy It claims to be an ‘innovative online employability learning solution, created specifically to meet the needs of 15 to 24 year old jobseekers’ It is a free online learning programme created by Accenture. It aims to help address youth employment in the UK and to support young people on their journey to finding and maintaining a job.

It offers 3 courses and 35 interactive online learning modules designed to help young jobseekers: •

28. Success at School This is a priced (currently ÂŁ349pa) online resource. It allows users to create an independent careers platform for their institution which includes classroom resources and access to independent advisers. It also allows reporting on students careers related activities and has won praise from OFSTED. More information from team@successatschool.org

29. Young Enterprise They operate UK wide and, indeed, are part of the Junior Achievement Worldwide Network. Young Enterprise has been in operation for 50 years. In recent years it has evolved to become more 50/50 between enterprise and wider employability skills.

The main programme is for 15 to 19 year olds. It runs for one academic year and focuses on groups of 10-12 students. It is generally run as an extra curricula activity. The students set up a company and work with a business mentor.

The year finishes with a competition. In Lancashire the final is in early May. The winners go forward to North West and UK and even Europe wide competitions.

Currently they work with about 30 high schools in Lancashire, but they also do a competition for undergraduates too and also with primary schools.

Young Enterprise have recently merged with the Personal Finance Educational Group (PFEG) and together they do a lot of CPD with teachers.

Schools do have to pay for the Young Enterprise programme.

Some schools concentrate Young Enterprise activities on business students. Some also have a full application process with forms and interviews too!

30. Not going to uni A useful website for students who want to know what their options are as an alternative to university. It covers apprenticeships, alternative courses, college higher education, sponsored education, distance learning, work experience/interns, employment and training, gap year, jobs and traineeships.

There is an advice centre with the opportunity to have a live web chat for personal advice and a useful blog section where certain key words and sectors can be looked up.
