How we actively promote British Values at Ladybridge in Reception

Democracy

Democracy-Making decisions together. part of the focus on self-confidence and self-awareness Tolerance of those with As Different Faiths and Beliefs as cited in Personal, Social and Emotional Development: We encourage children in Reception to know their views count, to value views from other people and value and talk about their feelings. For example, when they do or do not need help. When possible, we demonstrate democracy in action. Once a week we have a meeting to discuss our questions about rules and concerns. We choose a child to chair the meeting and they record the question raised and the decisions made. We all express ourselves freely during the meeting and share what is important to us. We listen carefully to each other.

We provide activities that involve turn-taking and sharing, particularly during the first term. We also try to create an environment where all questions are valued.

As part of the focus on managing feelings and behaviour: We are extremely consistent with behaviour management, from the day children start Reception. We ensure that all children understand their own and others’ behaviour and its consequences. They must learn to distinguish between right and wrong. If problems occur, like an area in the classroom being left untidy, we work together to solve the problem.

We involve the children in creating the class rules. This takes place in the first two weeks of September. The children know what the consequences will be if they do not follow these rules.

Individual Liberty

Individual liberty-freedom for all. part of the focus on self-confidence and self-awareness Tolerance of those with As Different Faiths and Beliefs and people and communities as cited in Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Understanding of the World: We believe that it is important to provide opportunities for children to develop their general knowledge, self-esteem and increase their confidence in their own abilities. For example, when children arrive each morning they selfregister and immediately select where they would like to play, also resources in the continuous provision encourage children to become independent learners – paint mixing, choosing to play inside or outside, washing their own cups after snack time. The children are encouraged to talk about their experiences and learning.

We also plan a range of experiences that allow children to explore the language of feelings and responsibility, encouraging them to reflect on their differences and understand that we can have different opinions and that is ok. For example, we talk at length about how the children feel when they start school/about to transfer into Year 1.

As part of the focus on people and communities, managing

Activities are specifically planned to enable children to engage with the wider community.

For example, a parent/governor is invited in each year to talk about the celebration of Diwali, a local guide dog and its owner visit, the dental hygienist also visits.

We ensure that children develop a tolerance, appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures; know about similarities and differences between themselves and others (cultures/faiths etc)and share others’ experiences.

We model, reinforce and praise tolerance, the ability to share and respect opinions.

We share stories, sing songs that promote varied attitudes and challenge stereotypes. For example, stories about female astronauts, male nurses and cultural and racial stereotyping.

We make sure that we do not just simply add multi-faith books to the book corner or disabled people to small word. We actively promote British values daily.
