Class votes For our school talent show 2 acts from each class can for theFaiths whole school. order to choose with perform Different and InBeliefs these acts the class audition for the class TA and Teacher and for the rest of the class. Everyone then gets to vote. Discussions about how this is fair.

Everyone has a voice and their voice is heard through class voting. Whatever decision is made is stuck to and accepted through this fair process.

Traffic light system This shows consistency because all pupils are treated the same and obey the same rules.

Leadership In year 5 for English we have a leader once a week on each table who will be in charge of ensuring all pupils on their table are on task and editing their work effectively by going over the success criteria one point at a time. Also, in PE we have been doing badminton and have had matches where some of the children become referees/leaders as well as players. It is understood and respected that the referee/leader has the final say in any decision regarding the match.

School Council A child from each class is elected through class voting to join the school council and help make decisions which affect the whole school.

Every term, the children are given jobs to help keep our classroom safe and ensure no learning time is wasted as books and resources are handed out promptly at the beginning of every lesson.

What happens if laws are broken?

Court Case In year 5 we have also held trials which help us to understand the importance of the law and consequences faced if any are broken. One of our trials was based on our English book, The Highwayman, and was to determine who was to blame for Bess’ untimely death. We had to think very carefully about all the evidence we gathered from the book and come to a reasoned argument in our groups as to why our defendant was innocent. After a lengthy debate and lots of questioning the judgement was then made.

Child initiated ideas In English we do something called ‘story bounce’ this where every Faiths child in the classBeliefs has to add a sentence with isDifferent and onto a story that is ‘bouncing’ around the classroom.

It can be anything at all that the child wants and the stories always end up very funny and enjoyable for them. We are also starting to plan our class assembly in year five and children have had an input on what they think should go into it.

Presentations Children do one project every half term which involves a presentation to the class. Recently we have done a project on the Titanic. Children present their research and thoughts to the class (this was in the form of posters or PowerPoint’s) and then the rest of the class would ask questions and give comments.

The children are always encouraged to give their opinion on what they have been researching.

Equality In our study of the Victorians and our book Queen of the Falls in the autumn and spring terms, we had very good discussions about the inequality of men and women in this era. We discussed how times have changed and what made these changes occur. We also discussed if men and women are totally equal now and some incredible conversations took place including ones about how female footballers are not recognised for their achievements as much as males are. As a class we decided that men and women should of course be treated as equals in all aspects of life.

Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs These lessons allow pupils to explore their own and other’s faiths and beliefs. We always draw comparisons between the religions and have often found many similarities between these three. We enjoy learning about other faiths and fully accept and embrace all in our classroom and school. We have a clear mutual respect for all religions and believe that everyone has the right to practice their religion. This point was evidenced through our work on Guy Fawkes on 5th November when we gave our opinion on situation. The class agreed that it was wrong for the King to say that Catholics could not practice their religion.

French We do French every Friday afternoon and really enjoy learning a different language and learning about a different culture. Doing this helps us to broaden our mind about how other people live around the world.
