How we actively promote British Values at Ladybridge in Year Four

Democracy

In class, children take it in turns to take on the role of the leader. The leader is in charge of the group and delegates out other roles, e.g. Presentation Monitor. They ensure that all children are focussed and on track, the children know and understand that the leader is in charge.

In class, as part of our Titanic topic we set up a court room activity, where the children had to gather evidence and fairly decide who was to blame for the sinking of the Titanic. The children then had to take their arguments to the courtroom and the judge and jury had to fairly decide who was guilty. We came to a class decision that it was Captain E J Smith’s fault.

In Year 4, we often carry out votes, in order to make class decision. This can range from, what treat the children would like for golden time to who electing children for ‘child of the week’ or take on specific roles in class.

In Year 4, we take the children’s interests into account and we often plan around this and extend certain topics that the children particularly enjoy.

Consequences

Through our Titanic topic we have looked at changes to the law overtime and what incidents occurred in order for these changes to be enforced.

We have researched into the Titanic and looked at the laws in place at the time – especially those concerning Health and Safety. The children came to the conclusion that as there weren’t many laws in place e.g. minimum number of lifeboats; this was a catalyst for the tragedy. We’ve therefore discussed the importance of these and why laws must be adhered to.

BEWELL The children in Year 4 follow the BEWELL rules which are enforced across the whole of the schools. These rules are clearly on display in both Year 4 classrooms and children are aware of both the rewards and consequences.

After conducting the courtroom scene in topic, the children were interested to know more about it and we spent some time discussing why Britain has a legal system and how we must follow it. We looked at the different types of civil and criminal law and the consequences involved.

Individual Liberty

In Year 4, we work hard to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all the children where they feel safe. Each classroom has a worry monster or worry box, where the children are asked to write down any concerns they have and they can place them into the box or worry monster. The chn know then that the issue will be dealt with for them or they feel better knowing that they’ve shared their problem.

Children in Year 4 have been taught how to keep themselves safe including online. As part of the computing curriculum the children have studied E-Safety. The chn made a and created posters I their ICT session and a helpful PowerPoint online guiding other students how to keep safe. We had a particularly big emphasis on games and social media as a lot of the children were signed up to these programmes.

We carry out Kagan structures on a daily basis, where the children take part in peer mentoring and coaching one another. The chn have learnt to help mentor, support and praise one another and guide each other in activities when one of their peers is stuck. This process is especially effective during Maths sessions, when the children are working independently without a teacher.

In Year 4 we offer some freedom of choice, where the children can choose which activity they would like to carry out. In Art, we have been studying the work of Carson Collings, the children have been taught to re-create his work using 3 different mediums: water colours, pencil crayons and oil pastels. The children then had the freedom to choose which medium they wanted to use to create their final piece with.

During Spring term, we celebrated ‘Pancake day’ in class. We learnt about Shrove Tuesday and the religious connections to Jesus and fasting in the desert. The children sampled and tried different kind of pancakes. We talked about similarities to giving something up for lent and fasting and how we make sacrifices in all religions. We made links to lots of other religions and we had an open discussion in class, sharing out own personal scarifies.

During the autumn term the children in year four went on a ‘Faith Trail.’ This involved visiting a Mosque, a Hindu temple and a Church. Visiting these different places of worship enabled the children to meet people with different faiths. We discussed respecting other people’s religions and how we need to learn about them in order to respect them.
