Our initial meeting

In December we visited the offices of our Bright Stars sponsors David Allen where we held our initial meeting. In this meeting around the board table our team decided to launch a tuck shop in the school.

In our meeting we considered market research, marketing, local business support, cost and profitability and we given everyone in our team a task in the project.

We were very excited about our project and we then created a letter that we would send from our school council to local shops and businesses explaining all about Bright Stars and our brand new tuck shop.

This letter would help us to stock our tuck shop and start our business.

Dear We are writing from St Michael’s School in Dalston. We are taking part in the Centre for Leadership Performance’s Bright Stars 2016 competition. As part of the competition we have to start up and run our own business and have chosen to create a healthy tuck shop that will sell healthy snacks to the children in our school.

The Bright Stars competition launches on the 11th January 2016 and we are looking for some help from local businesses and supermarkets to support us in creating these healthy snacks for our tuck shop.

We are working with David Allen Accountants who are helping us with organising, marketing and accounts. Some of the main aims of the project are to make a profit, generate good ideas and get some advertising. However, our overall aim goes much further than the competition as we would like to make sure the tuck shop is sustainable so that we can go on enjoying it after the competition ends and everyone can carry on benefitting from the healthy snacks it will provide. With your help this idea can be become a reality.

We need your help and wondered if you could help us by providing some stock to us? Perhaps you are able to donate some healthy products or could offer us some deals on healthy foods, such as snack bars, healthy drinks, fruit and vegetables?

Weekly update - 18 January

Tuck Shop Update for week beginning 18th January What we did last week:  We all met last week and researched which cereal bars were healthiest and where we could get them from cheaply.  A group of us decided what to order and Mrs Paisley placed the order.  We created posters for the Tuck Shop.  We sorted a rota for the Tuck Shop and somebody to collect litter.  We agreed on a price of 30p for each bar.  We announced that the Tuck Shop would be opening on Monday in assembly and asked Mr Marsh to send a text to parents.

What we have done this week:  Tuck shop opened every morning break time.  Two members of the school council ran the tuck shop and took the money.  Every lunch time council members meet with Mrs Paisley and cash up.  We decided a simple accounts sheet with Mrs Paisley.  On Tuesday we noticed we were low on bars and decided on some new stock.  We asked for ideas in the playground about what we could sell and so decided to order some Belvita bars.  We launched a competition to name the Tuck Shop. The prize will be a free cereal bar.  Thought about how to recycle the boxes from the bars.

What we will do next:  Do our final accounts for the week.  Look at what sold well and what didn’t.  Decide when we need more stock.  Choose the winner of the competition.  Think about recruiting some other people to run the Tuck Shop.

David Allen update Today I had the pleasure of visiting St Michaels School to get an update on the bright stars project.

The business is now into its second week of trading and the council team have learned lots in a short period of time. Here are some of the things they have done: • Arranged a daily rota of council staff to man the tuck shop.

• Arranged for a pupil to be on litter duty each playtime.

• Arranged for cashing up and recording daily.

• Evaluated what sells and what doesn’t.

• Put special offers on slow selling stock to encourage sales.

• Held a competition for pupils to suggest a business name with the winner being awarded a free snack. The business is now called ‘The Snack Shack’.

They are now considering how they can have ‘special one off days’ of different stock items to keep the tuck shop fresh and sales ongoing.

They are considering how they can extend the tuck shop to the infants – currently offered daily to Years 3 – 6.

They are considering interviewing pupils to assist in the daily running of the tuck shop.

Tuck Shop Update for week beginning 25th January What we have done this week:  We ran the tuck shop using the rota as we did last week.  We completed last week’s accounts and found we had made £19 profit and still had some stock left over.  We had new stock, including some we had not sold before. These were very popular, especially the Belvita type bars. By Wednesday we needed to order more stock!  We announced the winner of our name competition in assembly, which was Erin in Year 6 with her idea of “The Snack Shack”. She got a free cereal bar on Wednesday.  We reduced the banana bars to 20p as they had not sold very well. They cost us 17p each so we decided to reduce them to 20p. This helped them sell a little better.  Decided to have a £5 float instead of £10 to cut down on cashing up time.

What we will do next:  Do our final accounts for the week.  Look at what sold well and what didn’t.  Get more stock over the weekend.  Think about recruiting some other people to run the Tuck Shop.  Talk to Mr Marsh about running the Tuck Shop for the Infants at some point.

Tuck Shop Update for week beginning 1st February What we have done this week:  We ran the tuck shop using the rota as we did last week.  On Monday we bagged up all our change and exchanged it at the Bank of Mrs Cook for notes to make storing it easier.  We completed last week’s accounts and found we had made £20 profit and still had some stock left over.  We trialled some yoghurt bars but these were not so popular. The most popular are still the Belvita Bars. By Wednesday we needed to order more stock again!  Banana bars are still reduced to 20p and are selling well.  School Council met and decided: - to introduce a “Fruit Only” day next week. We will need to price up some fruit.

Decided not to have it on a Friday as if stock does not sell it may spoil over the weekend.

- To interview from y5 and 6 for some other people to run the Tuck Shop – application forms out next week.

- To do a special Tuck Shop for the infants after half term.

What we will do next:  Do our final accounts for the week.  Look at what sold well and what didn’t.  Get more stock over the weekend.  Create an application form for the interviews.  Think of some questions for the interview.

Tuck Shop Update for week beginning 8th February What we have done this week:  Darcy and Myles cashed up Friday’s takings under their own steam and without any adult help.  We ran the tuck shop using the rota as we did last week.  On Monday Max and Emily bagged up all our change and exchanged it at the Bank of Mrs Cook for notes to make storing it easier.  We completed last week’s accounts and found we had once again made a profit and still had some stock left over.  We met as a whole school council and discussed Wednesday’s fruit day and the application process.  We decided to buy around 40 items of fruit and sell on Wednesday for 30p each, with no cereal bar option. If there was any remaining we could sell it on Thursday.  We launched the application forms in Year 6 which we had designed.  On Wednesday we met and shortlisted the application forms and decided on interview questions and who would do the interviews. Although everyone was very keen to take part we felt it would not be fair to the candidates to have too many people interviewing.  Held the interviews on Thursday and selected 5 people from Year 6 to start working in the Tuck Shop after half term. School council members asked the questions and then answered any questions the candidates had. They were brilliant and really rose to the challenge.  On Thursday we sold the rest of the fruit, at a reduced price of 20p, alongside the cereal bars.

More sold, with apples, followed by pears being the most popular.  On Friday Darcy and Myles will set up and run the Tuck Shop and cash up themselves. No adult support!

What we will do next:  Do our final accounts for the week.  Look at what sold well and what didn’t. Is there anything else we would like to try?  Get more stock for after half term.  Train our new Tuck Shop helpers.  Plan our Infant Tuck Shop day.

Tuck Shop Update for week beginning 22nd February What we have done this week:  The Tuck Shop is still being run daily and is going well. After the not so successful fruit day before half term we decided to concentrate on snack bars.  Our new staff have started working.  We did not need any new stock this week.  Tuck Shop helpers are carrying out the cashing up themselves, without any adult support.

What we will do next:  Do our final accounts for the week.  Look at the possibility of trying out some new items.  Plan our Infant Tuck Shop day.  Think about what we may use the profits for in the future.

Tuck Shop Update for week beginning 29th February What we have done this week:  We have responded to suggestions given by our customers and this week have introduced a new range of products including: popcorn, mini cheeses, rice cakes, fruit juice cartons, raisins and yoghurt tubes. These were in general more expensive to buy but we have been able to keep the prices to 30p an item (apart from rice cakes which are 30p for 2). We won’t make so much profit but the new products have meant more people are buying from us.  David Allen placed a large order with us and one of their team visited the school to meet some of the School Council and collect the order.  We are on week 2 of our rota and the new staff are enjoying their jobs.  We did not need any new stock this week.  Tuck Shop helpers are continuing to carry out the cashing up themselves, without any adult support.  School council met to discuss how the project had gone and which charity we would like to support. We have decided to donate to Eden Valley Hospice.

What we will do next:  Do our final accounts for the week and work out the profit we have made over the project.  Contact our chosen charity to arrange our donation.  Plan our Infant Tuck Shop day for before Easter.  Think about what we may use the profits for in the future.  Continue to run the Snack Shack!

Bright Stars 2016 The Snack Shack Summary Our aim when taking on this project was to have tuck shop that was sustainable and provided viable “business” that would continue at end of Bright Stars Project, rather than one off fundraising initiative.

“The Snack Shack” was not intended to make a massive profit, but meant to cover costs and enable more expensive healthy treats to be provided on occasions at less than cost price. Our school council felt that 30p was a reasonable amount to ask the children to bring in so we made a commitment that maximum price per product would be 30p and we have managed to stick to this throughout.

“The Snack Shack” has given pupils access to and opportunity to try different healthy snacks so that in future they make healthy choices. This health element of the project was very important to us.

Another huge benefit running a real “business” has been the opportunities and responsibilities it has provided for the children. Children across the school have brought snack money to school which they have had to care for, estimate costs and check their change – many pupils don’t have chance to do this outside of school. Those children who have been involved in running the tuck shop have had a wonderful, rich experience. They have researched products, carried out market research and acted upon it, they have staffed the tuck shop and cashed up afterwards (often with limited adult support). The school council also made the decision to extend the opportunity to run the tuck shop to a wider range of pupils. Their involvement in the recruitment and interview process was very valuable and they very much rose the occasion. The children have been enthusiastic and committed throughout and have been an absolute pleasure to work alongside.

The children have been delighted to be able make a donation to Eden Valley Hospice from our profits. The school council are looking at how we might use the rest of the profits, and the favourite suggestion at the moment is to use the money to buy some equipment to use at playtime (balls etc.) which would continue the healthy theme.

We have also had the opportunity to forge valuable links with a local business, David Allen and used their expertise to help us to develop our business ideas. Of course the use of their boardroom was also a highlight of the project for us.

Looking to the future, we are presently discussing the possibility of employing somebody to assist with the Tuck Shop on a part time basis. The idea would be that they could help to prepare more time consuming snacks, such as fruit salad and also with the purchasing of stock. This would help us to make the sustainability of the business more viable. It would also of course provide a member of the local community with part time employment. If we were fortunate enough to win one of the categories in the Bright Stars project, the prize would of course assist us greatly in being able to move forward with this.

We have very much achieved our aim of create a business that is sustainable. The tuck shop will continue to run on a daily basis and we are looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
