Year 3 Summer Term Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers, Both of us have been really pleased with Year 3 pupils. They have all been working hard and all shown an enthusiastic and positive attitude in their learning. They are challenging themselves to improve daily, homework is being completed and the children all have their reading records in school every day.

Literacy In Literacy we will be comparing conversational language and play scripts, before moving onto non-chronological reports.

We will be developing conversations by interviewing people and changing a wellknown story into a play which the children will perform. The non-chronological report will link to our science topic on habitats and the research the children will do on this.

The children will continue to have daily guided reading sessions, as well as being heard individually as often as possible. It would be really helpful if you could read regularly with your child and/or encourage them to read as often as possible please. You can record their progress in their white reading record book, showing how well they did or difficulties they had! Many of the children are at the stage where they need to show their understanding of the books they are reading and you can help this by asking them questions about the stories, and to help with this we have given the children book marks with sample questions on them.

Keyword spellings will continue to be set weekly as part of the homework, and we will test these on the following week. We have included a look, say, cover, write check sheet with the homework to encourage the children to write the words regularly, and then use the spellings in their writing.

Maths In Maths we are looking at mental calculations, revising place value and the four main operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.) developing both written and mental calculations. This will involve looking at different words for each operation and solving word problems so the children understand how maths relates to real life situations. We will also be working on measures including money and time.

The children will continue to learn their times tables. Practising these at home will benefit your child greatly to support their ability to perform mental calculations and solve problems. Revising them in random order regularly over the week can help when they are tested on a Friday,

Topics This half term we will be learning all about plants and animals and the habitats they live in, both in the local environment and around the world. This will include a trip to RSPB Minsmere/Benacre estate and possibly Africa Alive. Groups of children will be finding out about different habitats and using this information to make models of the habitats and making presentations to the rest of the class.

In DT and art we will be studying Henry Moore and sculpture and much of our work will involve making our own sculptures. We will also be looking at the history of sculpture and using a variety of different media to develop skills.

In Computing we will be looking at the suitability of different programmes for different uses, as well as looking at simple computer programming. We will be learning how to make sprites move in different ways, perform different actions and turn this into short stories or plays linked to Literacy.

PE will continue to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. The children will be practising ball skill and team games, and developing eye- hand coordination. For both of these days children will need their PE kits in school (white t-shirt, black shorts, trainers, jogging bottoms and a tracksuit top/sweatshirt). Please ensure that all garments have your child’s name inside.
