AIMS AND VALUES

At Diss Community and Church Primary School Federation we provide a happy and safe learning environment in which the children thrive. Everyone is expected to show mutual trust and respect for all of our community. We teach the children to be inclusive and tolerant. This enables them to develop self-discipline and become resilient learners. We encourage them not to say’ I can’t do this’ … but instead they know to say ‘I can’t do this yet’, knowing that with practice they can achieve their goals.

Like all schools, we strive for academic success and believe strongly in the importance of the education of the whole child. So to this end, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum, often engaging with activities beyond the school gates , that not only meet their needs, but regularly challenge them too.

We believe that education is a life long journey and that having a positive attitude to learning that is reinforced by parents, in conjunction with good home/school liaison, is central to the children’s aspirations and success.

Within this common vision, each of the three settings of the federation maintain their own distinctiveness. Our Junior School is Church of England school and has a Christian foundation and the Infant School and Children’s Centre have a Community foundation underpinning them.

We maintain this good relationship with parents and our wider community by keeping everyone well informed through monthly newsletters; ‘what’s on’ updates; text reminders and information on our website. Visits to our school are warmly encouraged and appointments can be made via both school offices.

ARRIVING AT NURSERY Nursery sessions

8.40-11.40 a.m.

Morning Session

12.00-3.00 p.m.

Afternoon Session

Please wait with your child outside the Nursery until your session is due to begin. Doors open at 8.40 a.m. and 12.00 p.m.

We encourage you to walk to school.

Please see the enclosed map for your 5-minute Walking Zone. There is a buggy shelter for pushchairs and a bike rack for bicycles and scooters.

WE VALUE PUNCTUALITY AS IT IS SO DISRUPTIVE TO OUR REGISTRATION PROCEDURE AND CHILDREN’S CENTRE STAFF, AND TO OUR SETTLING IN PERIOD WHEN CHILDREN ARRIVE LATE. It is important to arrive on time or your child can miss the introduction at the start of a session.

It also disrupts the rest of the class when parents and children come in late.

Should you be unavoidably detained and there is no-one in the Children’s Centre office, please ring the Nursery doorbell in the entrance.

Please help your child to find his or her coat peg and name card before bringing him or her into the main room. Get your child to hang his or her name card in the appointed place.

Share an activity with your child before you leave. This will help them to settle more readily.

Please talk to us if you are concerned about your child settling without you. Our aim is to create a happy and constructive environment in which every child feels safe and confident.

We aim to offer reassurance and support to assist you in settling your child and to enable you both to feel happy about the separation. We can offer suggestions and advice about ways to help your child to settle, but please remember it’s a big step for you both and it will take time to adjust.

THE NURSERY SESSION At the start of the academic year we establish the following routines: Children arrive and are welcomed with parents into the Nursery.

Parents help children to bring their name cards into the room and put them up in the appointed place. This registers their arrival, then the work of the Nursery begins.

Children select the resources they need and play independently for the first part of the session.

Dressing-up clothes, painting, building blocks, sand and water play and messy play are always available, as well as activities requiring more adult assistance, such as counting and matching games or imaginative play. There are regular opportunities for children to cook and bring food home.

At Tidy Up Time, everyone helps to tidy the Nursery before gathering together in the Quiet room. Nursery staff, students, parent helpers, children and all visitors are encouraged to tidy up a little bit.

In the Quiet room, we talk about the things we have done during the session, encouraging the children to discuss and perhaps show their achievements to the rest of the group.

We share rhymes and songs at this time taking suggestions from everyone present, as well as extending our repertoire with new ones.

Quiet Room time provides a good opportunity to reflect upon, share and enrich our experience of Nursery.

We also use the Quiet room time for whole class activity and the practice of letter sounds and numbers.

Snack is available later in the session. Children wash their hands and are then encouraged to serve themselves and wash up their cups and plates, and then continue with activity.

Story Time We encourage all children to sit and join in with the story, taking an active part in listening and responding. This takes place both indoors and out.

Please wait outside the Nursery AT THE END OF A SESSION The Nursery door is opened by staff once the Teacher has settled the children quietly to await collection by their parent or carer. The Teacher does not let your child leave the Quiet room until you enter the Nursery. The Teaching Assistant waits near the Nursery door to ensure that no child leaves the Nursery without the appropriate adult.

Please check under your child’s name card for paintings and other work as well as the ‘Home Box’ for personal belongings. This is also a good time to change library books, looking at displays or for having a quick word with the teacher before saying Goodbye.

If you are going to be late, please telephone the school as soon as possible so that we can reassure your child. Telephone (01379) 642768.

We need to know, in advance from you, if another adult is collecting your child, or they will not be allowed to leave with them.

PLEASE CLOSE THE CHILDREN’S CENTRE DOORS BEHIND YOU AND MAKE SURE WE KNOW YOU HAVE COLLECTED YOUR CHILD. PLEASE GET YOUR CHILD TO RETURN THE NAME CARD TO THE BASKET READY FOR THE NEXT DAY. Leave of absence: Leave will only be authorised in very exceptional circumstances and is at the discretion of the Headteacher and Governors. This may not include holiday taken in term time and we actively encourage families not to do so. All our unauthorised absence is reported to our Attendance and Inclusion Officer and legal action may be taken. Attendance is monitored regularly and where absence is persistent or patterns are emerging you will be asked to work with the Parent Support Advisor to improve attendance.

NURSERY FUNDING / EARLY YEARS PUPIL PREMIUM Each term you will be asked to fill in a form confirming how you are claiming your child’s 15 hours of free nursery education. If you are in receipt of Income Support, Job Seekers’ Allowance (income based), or receiving Child Tax Credit, you will be asked to put your National Insurance details on this form, as Nursery children are now eligible for Early Years Pupil Premium funding. It is most important that we have this information so we are able to claim this additional funding which allows us to further support our Early Years children.

HOW DOES THE NURSERY WORK?

The areas of the Nursery:  The ‘Messy Area’, where we have sand, water, paint, glue, clay and so on ... .

APRONS ARE PROVIDED: SLEEVELESS, WATERPROOF APRONS for water play; LONG-SLEEVED APRONS for paint, glue, clay, etc.  The ‘Imaginative Play Area’, which may be a house, cafe, hairdressers, shop, office and so on ... .  The ‘Carpet Area’ used for bricks, games, jigsaws, train, cars, music and so on ... .  The ‘Quiet Room’ to relax in, where children will find soft toys, cushions, music and Board games.  The Kitchen for cookery sessions.  Throughout, activities are made available for science, mathematical, language and creative development, where children will find materials for writing, counting, sorting, matching, experimenting and investigating. There are ICT toys and computers available for the children’s use.  The outdoor play and garden areas to investigate dance, climb, do role play, drama activities and play active games, using a wide range of ride-on toys and PE equipment to support all areas of development.

Foundation Stage classes plan common activities around half-termly themes, for example ‘Autumn’, and use all our areas to explore this. For example; counting conkers, leaf printing, talking about looking after hedgehogs with the hedgehog rescue visitor, using our role play area to draw on children’s personal experiences. Use is also made of facilities in main school, for example the play train, the school hall and the adventure playground.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD DO AT NURSERY? Nursery education is a partnership between parents, children and the adults in the Nursery.

Talking is an excellent way to strengthen that partnership.

Children learn through first-hand experience and investigative play. They are encouraged to explore materials, solve problems, express themselves, play and work with each other in a friendly atmosphere.

We encourage children to be independent and to care for each other and for Nursery equipment.

Home / School Agreement An annual Home /School Agreement is in place. The aim is to create an effective partnership between the school, parents and pupils, which is clearly understood and which acts as a framework for mutual support. Children achieve more when school and parents work together. You are asked to read the Agreement, and discuss it with your child. All parties will then be required to sign their section of the document. A copy is made for filing in school and a copy given to Parents.

AREAS OF LEARNING There are 7 areas of learning that shape our curriculum in the Nursery. All these areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are known as the prime areas, and these are:  Communication and Language;  Physical Development; and  Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

There are also 4 specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:    

Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive arts and design.

The 3 prime areas reflect the key skills and capacities all children need to develop and learn effectively, and become ready for school. The balance will shift towards a more equal focus on all areas of learning as children grow in confidence and ability in any prime areas.

HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON DAY BY DAY?

We invite parents to write their own observations about their child’s development, personal news and out of school experiences as ‘Wow’ moments – special things that your children may do with their families, photos, etc. Your child’s progress as a learning story will be shared regularly with you.

Please remember that the diary is just one vehicle of communication. Please talk to us about your child at any time. We are here to help. The best way to see what the children do at Nursery is to come in as a voluntary helper sometimes, after your DBS check has been processed and your child is settled in Nursery – usually after the first term.

Each half-term you are welcome to join your child at ‘Stay, Play and Share’ sessions, where your child can share their learning experiences with you.

Learning targets, learning opportunities and how you can help your child at home will be displayed on the wall in Nursery.

An informal parents’ evening will be arranged during the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms, when you will be able to discuss your child’s development with the Nursery Teacher.

You will also receive a full written report in July, at the end of your child’s year in the Nursery.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD EVERY DAY? Children learn through first hand experiences. The more you are able to talk with your child, listen and answer their questions, the better.

Nursery children need a good breakfast (and lunch if they come in the afternoon) and time to eat it. Allow your child plenty of time to travel to Nursery and to look forward to what s/he will be doing. Listening to what your child tells you and getting to know the Nursery staff will help to ensure a happy move from home to Nursery.

Please ask for a message to be passed on to the Nursery Staff if you are going to be late, if someone else is collecting your child, or your child cannot come to Nursery.

NOTE: Generally, PLEASE keep your child at home - if s/he has had diarrhoea or sickness - 48 hours from the last episode - if s/he has a raised temperature - if s/he is very overtired.

We cannot give medicine in Nursery, so if your child is on antibiotics s/he needs to be kept at home until fully recovered.

CLOTHES LABEL EVERYTHING PLEASE, as the children often don't recognise their own things. Make sure your child can do all fastenings they wear. Encourage your child to ‘have a go’ – it’s amazing how quickly they can learn!

Your child will need:     

School sweatshirt or cardigan White polo shirt Plimsolls Wellies No jeans – washable, practical clothes with easy fastenings, e.g. jogging bottoms, leggings.

Toileting Please encourage your child to use the toilet independently. Children are happier if they can use the toilet by themselves, but staff will help whenever necessary.

If your child is still not completely dry in the day, please change them just before they come to Nursery. Ensure you send all that we need to change them, plus wipes and a disposal bag to take the soiled nappy home in. We have found that pull-up type nappies are easier to use.

Outdoors: Children play outside every day. They need a named coat in cool weather and a named sun hat in Summer. Please put sunblock on your child before coming to Nursery.

In the interest of safety, children with pierced ears should only wear studs. These must be removed for PE. Other jewellery and watches should be kept at home.

NOTE: We provide the children with aprons for all messy activities. In a Nursery setting, in spite of all our efforts, it is inevitable that children’s clothes will come into contact with paint, glue and so on. We can lend a spare set of clothes in case of accidents, but a change of clothes in your child’s bag is always useful.

BAGS Your child will need a school PE bag (available for purchase at the office) in which to keep a change of clothes, pull-ups, etc. if needed, and plimsolls.

FOOTWEAR Your child needs ordinary shoes for indoor and outdoor play, plus a pair of named trainers for outdoor P.E. These should be left at Nursery in a small cloth bag, with long strings to hang down far enough so they are not in the way of the coat pegs. P.E. indoors will be done in bare feet.

Your child also needs to have a pair of named Wellington boots. These will need to be left at school at all times.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS Free milk and fruit is provided. A small charge will be made to cover the costs of materials used for cookery and special events.

We invite parents to make voluntary contributions towards the cost. We therefore inform parents of any such activities as early as possible so that the school can determine whether there are sufficient voluntary contributions to cover the cost of the activity.

If a parent makes no contribution towards the costs, this does not mean that their child will be excluded from an activity. However, under the financial constraints now in force in schools, no activity can take place unless it is financially viable. Parents in receipt of Income Support, Job Seekers’ Allowance or Child Tax Credit are able to discuss the remission of charges with the Headteacher.

In the event of an activity being cancelled, all monies received will be refunded.

HOW WILL YOU BE INVOLVED? We would like parents to come in as regular voluntary helpers. It would be wonderful to have a person helping every day. It enriches all our activities, and can be especially useful for regular extra support.

Please speak to the Nursery teacher for the days you can help. DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) checks will need to be completed before parents come in to help.

We also have a thriving Parent / Teacher Association, which welcomes new members with enthusiasm. Parents of children at the Nursery automatically become members. If you are willing to help, on the committee, with fund-raising or social events, they will be delighted to hear from you.

We hope that you will support us in occasional fund-raising efforts.

Information about the implementation of the Governing Body’s policy on pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Our Special Educational Needs policy and our policy for Gifted and Talented pupils are rigorously implemented. We continue to place the highest importance on providing for the different needs of all of our children.

Every day learning in all subjects is differentiated to ensure that it is accessible to and understood by all, supporting and extending as appropriate.

Parents are welcome to see any relevant policies in school.

Pupils with disabilities

See the inside of the back cover for the Local Authority admissions policy. If there are places available, any child whose parent wishes them to come to Diss Infants and Nursery, including those with disabilities, will be offered a place.

Child Protection Because of the day-to-day contact with children, schools are particularly well placed to observe outward signs of abuse, changes in behaviour, or failure to develop. Parents should be aware therefore that where it appears to a member of the school staff that a child may have suffered harm, the school is required, as part of the Area Child Protection procedures, to report concerns immediately. Use of the procedures in this way is an obligation placed on the school by legislation and in no way infers that any parent / carer is being accused of wrongdoing.

Safeguarding

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

All adults and visitors in school are DBS checked and recruitment favours strict safeguarding protocols. A copy of our Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment Policy is available in the entrance.

Complaints Procedure Any complaint, however trivial, is dealt with speedily and fairly.

Every attempt is made to ensure that complaints from parents, given to staff, are resolved by the individual teacher, if possible.

The Headteacher is informed of all complaints.

If a solution cannot readily be found, then the problem is presented to the Headteacher. After consultation, it is hoped that the Headteacher would be able to find a solution acceptable to all parties.

Complaints made to a Governor should also be solved as speedily as possible. The Headteacher is informed of the situation whether or not an immediate answer can be given. It is hoped that the Headteacher will be able to devise an acceptable solution.

Complaints from parents, made directly to the Headteacher, are dealt with by the Headteacher.

The Headteacher regularly informs the Governors of the general nature and areas of complaint.

If a complaint cannot be solved by the Headteacher, the Headteacher consults the Chairman of the Governors and County officers and from thence County procedure must be followed, ensuring that at the earliest stage possible the complainant is made aware of the position to date, the action being taken immediately, and the County Complaints Procedure.

If your complaint is about the Headteacher, it should be referred straight to the Chair of Governors.

WHY HOME VISIT? If you do not have a child already in school, we can do a Home Visit.

The home visit helps ensure a happy child getting the maximum benefit from his or her time in the Nursery.

Some of the benefits are listed below: 

The family will already know the names and faces of the staff on their first day at Nursery.



We can begin to build the vital trust and confidence which will lead to a working partnership between home and school.



It gives parents an opportunity to ask questions and talk about their child without distractions, and in their own environment.



Parents can pass on information about their child's development, and any problems or special skills the child has.



It gives parents the chance to discuss, in confidence, any delicate family matters that we may need to know about, if it is likely to affect their child's well-being.



Medical information can be passed on, for example, whether the child was premature; whether he or she has any allergies, asthma or eczema; whether he or she has had any operations or genetic conditions; whether there is any problem with hearing or eyesight or any special dietary requirements.



Staff can then build on the children's home experiences when they get to Nursery.



If we have received information in advance about any special needs or requirements we can adapt activities to suit them.



The information parents provide forms the basis of our on-going records of the children's progress.

The questions you will be asked are listed below:         

Who lives in the family home?

What ages are any other children in the family?

What do you hope your child will gain from attending nursery?

Has your child any experience of Playgroup or Mother and Toddler group, etc?

Is your child toilet trained?

Does your child have any health problems or Special Educational Needs?

Every child has a visit to Nursery with a parent/carer in the term before entry.

Clarity of speech and willingness to talk Your child’s particular interest.

We will also play with your child during the visit.

DISS INFANT AND NURSERY SCHOOL WITH CHILDREN’S CENTRE Policy for the Admission of children to Nursery classes

Children may be admitted in nursery class at the beginning of the term following their third birthday, if a place is available.

Children usually start nursery class at the beginning of the term in September, January or April.

However, for children moving into the area, where a place is available, children may start mid-term.

Diss Infant and Nursery School offers five part-time sessions each week throughout the school year.

The times of these sessions will be as follows: 8.40-11.40 a.m.

or 12.00-3.00 p.m.

Nursery places are limited and some of these places are reserved for children with Special Educational Needs.

If there are more applications for places than there are places available, we will give preference to children living nearest the school according to the following criteria in this order of priority: 1. Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs naming that school 2. Children who live within the designated area and have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of their admission.

3. Children who live within the designated area and have a brother or sister attending the adjoining junior school at the time of their admission.

4. Children who live within the designated area and have no brother or sister attending the school or adjoining junior school at the time of their admission.

5. Children who live outside the designated area and have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of their admission.

6. Children who live outside the designated area and have a brother or sister attending the adjoining junior school at the time of their admission.

7. Children living outside the designated area and have no brother or sister attending the school or adjoining junior school at the time of their admission.

If you would like to apply for a nursery class place at Diss Nursery please contact the office – telephone 01379 642768.

If you are given a place in the nursery class, it does not mean your child will automatically have an admission place in the Reception year. You will be asked by the Local Authority nearer to the admission date whether you require a place for your child in the Reception class.

Although a child’s five early education sessions may be split between a playgroup and a nursery class, to maximize the use of the nursery class place the school will allocate the additional sessions not attended to another child. If your child attends the nursery class for five sessions weekly, any sessions at another pre-school will have to be funded by you the parent.

If you do not wish your child to attend nursery class for five sessions weekly, you must tell the Headteacher, in order that the additional sessions may be allocated to another child. This may mean that 5 sessions will not be available later that academic year if you wish to increase sessions. Alternatively, you may delay your child’s admission into nursery class, but this may mean that a place will not be available later in the academic year if required.

Once places have been allocated, any unfilled sessions will be offered to parents AS AN ADDITION to the funded 15 hours. These sessions will be charged at the following rates:  £4 per hour  £2 over lunchtime  £25 for the whole day.

Summary of key findings for parents and pupils This is a good school. Pupils achieve well from starting points significantly below the levels expected for their age. Standards in reading and mathematics are above average this year in Year 2. Disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs make good progress because the support provided for them is tailored to their individual needs. Some of the teaching in Reception and Year 2 is outstanding. In particular, teachers ask questions skilfully to check pupils’ understanding and make them think hard. Behaviour is outstanding in and around the school, and pupils say they feel completely safe.

Pupils are very enthusiastic about learning. Outstanding and innovative assessment arrangements mean that all adults have an extremely good knowledge of how well individuals are learning and what they need to do next to improve their work more. The executive headteacher and deputy headteacher, supported by the governing body, have improved teaching and maintained good levels of progress throughout the school. Their vision for excellence is shared by all staff. The curriculum is lively and stimulating with an emphasis on developing pupils’ skills rapidly.
