Girls’ Football Regional Week Tournament

The Year 9 and Year 10 girls were narrowly defeated 3-2 by Fleetwood in the semi finals of the Regional Girls Football Week Tournament. The girls played extremely well and came across some tough challenges (ouch!). Special mentions to Megan Dickinson who played superbly throughout the tournament, Katy Butterworth for some amazing saves as Goalkeeper and Caitland Richardson for scoring a hatrick against the tangerine army !

Outward Bound Continues We are now 50% of the way through the Outward Bound sessions for this academic year. So far 10 sessions have run for Years 7 and 8, with all students in Year 8 now having had the opportunity to attend a day at Waterpark Outdoor Activity Centre on the shores of Lake Coniston in Higher Nibthwaite.

The weather has been 'variable' ranging from very cold to fairly cold with the odd sunny break. However, attitudes and effort from students has been top notch despite the best efforts of the weather.

Many have tried activities they have not done before, many have visited the Lake District for the first time (some thought it was in Scotland, one even thought it was in the USA - who teaches him Geography??) We have had people in water that cannot swim while all the time, enjoyment, teamwork and co-operation have been at the heart of what we are looking to achieve and develop.

So far activities have included rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, low ropes, high ropes, trekking and ghyll scrambling. There will be much more of this to come over the next 3 months and hopefully Mr Corcoran and Ms Ascroft can develop their tans in time for the summer holidays!!

Sessions continue for the rest of the year, with the focus now moving on to Year 9.

Shakespeare Week On Monday 25th April the Library celebrated 400 years since the death of Shakespeare on 23rd April. There were quizzes on his life, word searches and other activities about the language he used in his plays. Everyone chose something to do and the winners with the most words found in the word search were: Grace Taylor, Isabel Nicholls, Abigail Gregson and Mia Gonzales-Reynolds.

Expressive Arts Well done to all the students involved in Ashton’s Got Talent before the half term break. There were over 60 artists performing to 200 excited friends and family in the audience. The evening was a great success and showcased the talent of our young singers, dancers, actors, comedians and musicians. The head judge, ‘Director of Broughton Music academy’ was extremely impressed by the talent and enthusiasm of our students. A special thank you to our guest performers, children from ‘Queen’s Drive Primary School’. The children from Queen’s Drive were the KS2 winners in the Dance competition held earlier in the term. A special congratulations to the first place winner Lewis Seaward and runners up Lily Burrows and Zino Okojie.

We wish good luck to Mrs Barnes in the Musical Theatre department as she leaves to have her baby.

Students are starting the rehearsal process once again for the next school show in the summer term ‘Just Dance’. Dance clubs are on offer for girls and boys across the year groups to learn a variety of styles for the show at lunch time with Miss Mac.

Mock Exams Preparation In order for 10x1 to prepare for their mock speaking and listening assessment, they were given the opportunity to put together, in groups, a presentation on Capital Punishment. All the students engaged in the activity and especially enjoyed using the library iPads in their English classroom. Well done for your hard work 10x1. Your presentations were intriguing and very well prepared! The iPads are available to loan out across school; please see Mr Tomlinson for more information.

Graphics Trip Midland Hotel On Thursday 7th April, the year 9 graphics group enjoyed a trip to the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. They had a guided tour of the 1930's Art Deco hotel given by Brian Jenkins, the curator. Mr Jenkins explained all about the history of the hotel which was built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway and featured many of the works of the famous sculptor, Eric Gill. The students found lots of inspiration for their graphics exam in which they have to design travel posters - even the seahorses on the front of the hotel which were modelled as Morecambe shrimps!
