How to support your child’s learning at home:  Listen to your child read for 10 minutes every day.  Help them to learn their times tables.  Ensure that your child completes their homework.  Provide your child with a quiet place to work/read.

Curriculum Overview Year 4 Summer Term 1

English: This term, English is based around persuasive texts. The lessons will involve children analysing and discussing a range of persuasive texts such as adverts, leaflets and brochures. Children will also be working alongside our creative partner ‘Nicole’, whereby they will get the chance to use their drama skills to act out resulting in a final showcase. This will be cross curricular and linked into our creative topic for this term.

Maths: We begin this term by applying our counting, sequencing and multiplication facts knowledge to handling data and measures. We will then look at the number system with a particular focus on decimals. The written method of division will be secured when finding fractions of shapes and amounts. Knowledge of the number system will be further applied when measuring lengths, volumes and masses. We will finally be developing our knowledge of symmetry, translations and time.

Creative Curriculum: This half term, lessons will be based around our whole school theme of The Olympics. Children will initially learn about the history of the Olympics. Year 4 will be focusing mainly on the country Italy, Rome in particular. They will also use maps and atlases to research, locate and compare countries competing in the Olympics and their climates. Our creative partner will also work with us to create some drama around the Olympics

Science: ICT: This term the children will explore branching databases and learn how to create a branching database of their own.

Art, DT and Music: In Music we will be focusing on the skills of performance and composition. We will be looking at the role of the fanfare in the Olympics as well as other celebrations.

Children will use instrument sounds, notes and rhythm to perform and compose their own fanfare suitable for the medal ceremony of the Olympic Games.

In science we will be focusing on the topic of Living Things and their Habitats. We will use classification keys to identify, group and name a variety of living things within the local and wider environment. We will use our park visit this half term to support our learning of habitats.

P.E. In PE this term the children will take part in a variety of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. They will work as a team to solve problems and follow simple trails.

Boys group 2 will start swimming later this term. Boys MUST have swimming trunks (not swimming shorts). Goggles are not allowed.
