Reydon Primary School - Year 4 Summer 1 2016
Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome back! We hope you all had a relaxing Easter break and are ready for an exciting term full of opportunities to improve and extend our knowledge throughout the curriculum while maintaining our five learning behaviours: Resilience; Reflection; Relationships; Risk-Taking and Resourcefulness. An important reminder: this term, Year 4 will begin swimming classes on Friday 22nd April as part of our P.E. syllabus.
Curriculum outline Topic: This term’s Topic is Art based, so we will be learning all about Roman Mosaics. This will link to History and Geography where we will be learning about the Roman Empire and its relationship with Britain, locations of the major sites of Roman interest and find out how we are still being influenced by their legacy. We will be designing our own mosaics by studying different examples and using various mediums to complete our own mosaic. Maths: We will be beginning with measurements, using our gardening to see how what we learn in the classroom has real life implications. We will also study fractions, and how to convert tenths and hundredths to decimals. English: We will be completing our ‘Instructions’ unit and learning how to write stronger narratives through ‘Talk 4 Writing’ which will include improving our use of noun phrases, descriptive language and multi-clause sentences. Science: We will be learning more about light and how we actually see things before studying magnetism. P.E: We will be striving to improve our swimming and athletics including relays and throwing events. Guided Reading: Linked to English programme of study. DT: We will be studying mechanisms and moving parts.
Notes: Please see the Year4 objectives that were handed out in July to keep up to date with this year’s expectations. Please don’t forget to check the school website and in particular our own page, where you can keep up to date with all our learning. Year 4 Class Page: http://reydonprimary.org/class-pages/year-4
General class reminders Homework - Homework will continue to be given out on a Wednesday and will include English, Maths and tasks relating to Topic work. Reading at Home – The pupils should still be reading at home every evening to further their understanding and comprehension of a text. Spelling test - Spelling tests will be held on Mondays and will follow the National Curriculum spellings for Year 4. Those unable to meet the required mark (60%) will be expected to repeat the spellings the following week. P.E. – Please remember that the school kit is a white polo shirt, black shorts/skirt, socks and trainers. We will be using the field and jumping so secure, sturdy outdoor trainers will be essential from this term. Times Tables – This year all students should be able to recall facts for all 12 tables to 12 x 12. Even when you think your child can do this, please keep practising. When secure, we will move on to related division facts, e.g. If 12 x 6 = 72 then 72 ÷ 6 = 12 and … If 6 x 12 = 72 then 72 ÷ 12 = 6.
Thank you for your co-operation and support, it is greatly appreciated. If you have any queries, or would like to come in and share any expertise with us, please do not hesitate to speak to either of us before or after school. Mr Patterson and Mrs Rose.
