Topic Plan Starting point – Hook and Wow!

We are going to create our own settlement.

Maths Week 1- Place value, Roman numerals, counting including negative numbers Week 2- Fractions and decimals Week 3- Fractions, decimals and division Week 4- Position and direction Week 5-Area Week 6- Addition including statistics, measures, money Science What happens to food when you eat it?

Children will have the opportunity to explore these different features of animals and humans:  The food chain  The digestive system  The different types of teeth

English Persuasive writing linked to our Business Enterprise  Stories with issues and dilemmas  Classic poetry  Class novel – ‘The boy in the Dress’ The Learning Challenge Question

Where would you choose to build a settlement?

Design & Technology Year 4 will be creating their own model versions of a town or city that they have planned.

This will be completed through our Geography topic.

Computing

E-safety – Safer Internet Day 10

Geography Children will have the opportunity to explore settlements, land use, economic activity and natural resources including rivers. They will be discussing different places that people live and why they might choose to live there. They will be using the information that they find out to design and create their own cities.

Music

4JK weekly cornet session Exploring the sounds that different instruments make (linked to our science topic including volume and pitch.)

PE

Writing Opportunities Year 4 will work towards drafting, editing and writing a final draft of the following:  A classical poem  A story with a dilemma  A persuasive letter

Next term, year 4 get the opportunity to work alongside the Blackpool Football Club FIT2GO team. They will take part in a range of multi-skill lessons that will also prepare them for a FIT2GO festival that will take place later on in the year.

Proposed unit outcomes By the end of our topic the children should have knowledge of the different features of towns, cities and the countryside. They will understand the reasons why early settlements have remained in certain locations. They will also learn and develop the design and technology skills they need to create a model version of a settlement.

PSHE

Year 4 will continue with their understanding of current affairs by watching Newsround daily. They will have the opportunity to discuss debate and share their opinions of current affairs with the rest of the class.

Business & Enterprise

After achieving very successful sales at the Christmas Fair, year 4 will continue to promote their ‘KOOL KEYRINGS’ company during the spring term.

Theme Events City show case This will be an opportunity for children to share the work that they will have produced during the term with parents and other members of the family. They will have the opportunity to showcase the city or town they have created.

How can I support my child at home?

Please take the time to explore your local area either on Google Maps or even a walk round your neighbourhood with your child.

(This will help with the Topic homework) Year 4 watch Newsround every day and discuss current affairs. Ask your child their opinion of what’s going on in the world and share your opinion with them.

Health & Wellbeing

Year 4 will not only work alongside FIT2GO in their P:E sessions, but they will have the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and lifestyles within the classroom. The children will study different types of food groups and learn to identify the effects different foods can have on the body.

Unfortunately, many children in year 4 are not reading regularly enough on a weekly basis. This is having an impact on the rest of their learning. Please ensure that you read at least 3 times a week with your child.

Please take any opportunity you have to practice times tables with your child. Even if it is 3 minutes a day, this will have a positive impact on their learning in maths.
