Year 5 Summer Newsletter The children have a wide range of activities to look forward to in the forthcoming weeks. The children have been extremely excited about learning Chinese with our teacher in Beijing! Literacy We will be focusing on Stories from other cultures this term and Non-chronological reports within Literacy. Next term we will be building upon our knowledge of playscripts and discussion texts.

Numeracy In maths this term we will be focusing on all core areas. We will be using and applying our mathematical knowledge.

The children will be continuing to develop their skills at writing fiction and non-fiction genre. There will be a focus on grammatical elements such as converting nouns or adjectives into verbs using suffixes Verb prefixes. Also use of commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity. Spelling & Handwriting will be a focus during summer term as well. Things to do at home:  Question your child on the book they are reading at home.  Encourage your child to write independently at home on areas of interest.

The children will be continuing to focus on knowing their times tables.

R.E

Science

The children will be learning about ‘transformation’ during this term. This explores the Pentecost and celebrates the Spirit’s transforming power. We will be focusing on ‘freedom & responsibility’ and next term we will develop our knowledge of ‘Stewardship’, making links to the world around us.

This term the children will be exploring ‘forces’ in science. We will also be looking at how to be a super scientist. The children will focus on how to create a fair test and look at what scientists do.

Year 5 will also be learning about other religions during Summer term such as Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism.

Computing The children will be planning and creating their own website about cyber safety this term. Next term the children will focus on sharing experiences and opinions through blogging.

Things to do at home:  Encourage your child to practice their times tables.  Question and get your child to use their mathematical knowledge in everyday situations.

Next term we will be looking at living things and their habitats, as well as ‘growing up’ and our stages of development.

Humanities The topic for this term is Ancient Egypt. We will be researching the history of Egypt and creating pieces of Art inspired by this time. Through geography we will be researching the USA. Next term we will be carrying out a study of Andy Warhol’s work in Art and through history we will explore the Anglo Saxons.
