Modern Foreign Languages Faculty Building On Language Learning

Languages Opening Doors

This half term Year 7 and Year 8 students have enjoyed taking part in a Languages Enrichment lesson, and building the Eiffel Tower was the challenge they faced on Curriculum Day.

To link in with National Careers Week MFL teachers have been discussing with students what advantages learning a language can give you. Here are their Top 10 reasons:

The construction exercise was part of a Language Enrichment programme designed to raise awareness of the most iconic structure on the Paris skyline. To enhance their usual language lessons, students had the opportunity to extend their cultural and historical knowledge of France. Through a variety of activities, including a video about the making of the Eiffel Tower, and a quiz to learn some facts and figures about size, use and maintenance, students learnt about the life of the Eiffel Tower – past and present. In groups, the challenge then was to build a model of the historical monument using straws and working as a team. This wasn’t as easy as it sounded and we had some excellent towers and enthusiastic effort from all groups. We then judged and chose a winning group from each class with the most stable and well-made towers winning their group a prize as well as commendations for groups who planned well together and worked effectively as a team.

PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parents/Carers As we reach our Easter holidays it is important to reflect on the significant progress Aspire Academy has made since arriving at our new school building last November. All students have now firmly settled into their new surroundings and are starting to make full use of the excellent facilities on offer to them. The many different rooms and spaces are now being owned by the various departments and subjects so inspiring work is being displayed on their colour co-ordinated notice boards. These complement the themed corridor wall images extremely well so students are being immersed in relevant information as they move around the buildings as well as in lessons. Very good student attendance continues to be a high priority for all students with ongoing rewards being frequently distributed to successful students in assembly; please keep 96% as a minimum target. As we move into the Whitsun and Summer terms we look forward to using new additional facilities including an outside shelter for inclement weather and an upgraded Learning Resource Centre instead of a library. We remain firmly committed to providing an excellent educational experience for all students of all abilities at all times. Mr C B Simkins OBE
