3D Printing Workshop UCLAN

Year 7 students had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a 3D design and printing workshop run by UCLAN this week.

The workshop consisted of computer aided design and manufacture of keyrings on 3D printers in the university's new innovation lab. All the students got to design and print their own keyring and then took part in some fun challenges like constructing the tallest weight bearing tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows (!) and then building a hovercraft.

This was a good chance for them to practise their skills especially as we now have our own 3D printer in school they will get the opportunity to work with in the Art, Design & Technology faculty.

The New Menu Miss Brown is looking forward to introducing the new menu, which she helped put together as part of the Menu Development Team for Lancashire County Council.

There are lots of new dishes for the pupils to try as well as many of our ‘old’ favourites.

We will be holding some taster sessions for everyone to try the new dishes.

Ashton Community Science College, along with LCC, take pride in sourcing our food locally. All our suppliers are based here in Lancashire.

Lancashire County Council have also just won the Silver Food Life Award for incorporating the use of Organic produce into the Menu.

We have just taken delivery of new Dining Tables which means we can comfortably seat over 300. Miss Brown is looking forward to seeing the Dining Room full of new faces!

Autism Awareness Autism is a lifelong developmental disability. It is part of the ‘autism spectrum’ and is sometimes referred to as an autism spectrum disorder, or an ASD. The word ‘spectrum’ is used because, while all people with autism share three main areas of difficulty, their condition will affect them in very different ways. Some are able to live relatively ‘everyday’ lives; others will require a lifetime of specialist support.

The three main areas of difficulty which all people with autism share are sometimes known as the ‘triad of impairments’. They are: • difficulty with social communication • difficulty with social interaction • difficulty with social imagination.

There is a form of autism called Asperger syndrome.

As soon as we meet a person we make judgements about them. From their facial expression, tone of voice and body language we can usually tell whether they are happy, angry or sad and respond accordingly. People with Asperger syndrome can find it harder to read the signals that most of us take for granted. This means they find it more difficult to communicate and interact with others which can lead to high levels of anxiety and confusion.

Asperger syndrome is mostly a ‘hidden disability’. This means that you can’t tell that someone has the condition from their outward appearance.

While there are similarities with autism, people with Asperger syndrome have fewer problems with speaking and are often of average, or above average, intelligence. They do not usually have the accompanying learning disabilities associated with autism, but they may have specific learning difficulties. These may include dyslexia and dyspraxia or other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy.

With the right support and encouragement, people with Asperger syndrome can lead full and independent lives.

During Schools’ Autism Awareness Week students from ACSC will be shown some clips made by children with Autism which will be followed by teacher led discussions. All assemblies during this week will focus on how to help a person diagnosed with an ASD be less anxious in school.
