BY STORM Thrilled, nervous, hopeful. I woke from my slumber

trying to prepare my mind for the events that would occur later that day. I make myself look slightly more aesthetically pleasing, and I leave the house in a rush.

Now I look back, I find it amusing the fact I was rushing I left the house for a concert 11 hours before it started, but I couldn’t bear to settle for anything less than front row.

After standing for 2 hours, which felt like 6 - the show

began. Nicki’s introduction consists of black and white video footage, accompanied by a soundtrack of her embedding the idea that her “fans are a reflection of all that is possible”. Tears begin to fill up in my eyes and it isn’t long before my cheeks are dampened by them.

After a dramatic intro, Nicki appears rising out of the floor, wearing a black draping dress - with sequin embroidery paired with a matching lace veil covering her eyes. The heavy smoke begins to fill the stage as she performs a melody of 3 very personal, introspective, emotional songs - ‘All things go’, ‘I lied’ and ‘The Crying Game’.

After a change of tempo and another interlude, the smoke cannons and mysterious red lighting are back at play.

Once the breath-taking show had finished, me and my friends left the arena to go back in our hotel rooms and get a coat. We then made our way back to the arena, and waited until 1 am - until Nicki herself came out and communicated with us, exciting us further. After having a picture taken with her, and having my phone signed, I burst into tears. A quick phone call to my mum was necessary, I announced that I had met her after dreaming of the moment and waiting a long 5 years. After seeing Nicki live twice on her previous tours, the wait was definitely worth it. The Pinkprint tour was one of the best experiences to date, and I am glad I went to multiple show.

SUICIDE SQUAD Suicide Squad is the third instalment of the DC

director, David Ayer, tweeted the first images of the Joker that the public opinion began to turn sour. As always, the internet sprung to life with comments of how horrendous the character design was and how his excessive tattoos made a serious, psychotic character appear very cartoon-ish and child-like.

Soon after, DC announced that the appearance of the Joker in the picture was simply a concept design and not the finished product maintaining fans’ hopes for the character.

Extended Universe and one of the most anticipated movies of 2016. With a cast that ranges from Cara Delevingne to Will Smith and a plot that witnesses the culmination of DC’s biggest and baddest villains, it’s easy to understand why the Comic Con trailer has racked up over 50 million views on YouTube. But with all the hype that this film has received, one of the most discussed topics is Jared Leto’s casting as the Joker. The last time the Joker graced our screens was in “The Dark Knight”, when Heath Ledger gave his iconic, Oscarwinning performance, so Jared Leto is under the utmost pressure to succeed.

When the casting was first announced, there was a mixed response amongst fans: some demanding that the casting was wrong for the character and that Leto would not be able to pull it off, whilst others remained hopeful that the Oscar winner, who is known for delivering great performances for strange characters, would be the perfect choice for the Clown Prince of Crime. It wasn’t until

In July, the first trailer for the film was released and though he only racked up a total of 12 seconds screen time in the three minute trailer, Jared Leto was all anyone wanted to talk about. His short but psychotic few moments garnered a lot of attention and his acting demonstrated that this was the insane sadist that fans had been wanting to see. Though some did question just how similar the performance was to that of Heath Ledger, it was not enough to deter expectations of the performance. But with the release date a whole ten months away, time will only tell as to whether Jared Leto will fulfil everyone’s wishes or whether the supposedly cursed role will prove too trying.

AUTUMN/WINTER COLOUR TRENDS

Burgundy gives off a warm, autumn feel to it, whilst being subtly seductive and dramatic. This colour is very popular this time of year because it looks so luxurious and defines sophistication. Burgundy also makes an extremely attractive bold lip.

Khaki has become a staple to many wardrobe’s this year, it is SO chic. Khaki brings an earthy, grounded vibe to any outfit with it’s cool undertone, whilst still making it a strong piece. A khaki bomber jacket is very popular and can be easily pulled off.

Grey is a very dependable colour that looks good on any skin colour, it makes low-key bold statements for anyone wanting to show off their more professional, slicked back side. It is also a “go to” colour as it is dependable and very constant. I love grey duster coats in the winter months, they are such a statement look.

Black is such a timeless colour that I feel it will never not be in fashion, it gives off vibes of confidence and immediately looks polished. Black and white is a classic combo making the look very refined and put together. Black jeans and black boots are a staple in all wardrobes, they are both very simple yet contemporary.

IS UNIVERSITY THE PLACE FOR YOU?

your mind to have different perspectives, you’ll develop highly transferable skills, such as working in a team, and that doesn’t mean giving an idea and then putting your feet up, it means working efficiently together in order to deliver effective presentations and communication skills.

At university, although it’s all about independence, don’t think you’re by yourself! University is a way of transitioning from education into the ‘real world’, you’ll be treated as an independent adult but there’s always a tutor there to support you.

Are you an aspiring young person who wishes to follow your dreams?

Why not go to university? You’ll have a better chance of getting a graduate job rather than someone who only has A-Level qualifications. Some careers such as being a doctor, vet, lawyer or teacher need a degree, so if that’s what you’re aspiring for, you best get looking at open days!

Going to university will undoubtedly be terrifying, but it’s highly important to remember that everybody is in the same boat as you are. Your time at university will boost your confidence and your communication skills will blossom. You’ll create a brilliant social life and your self confidence will be higher than ever.

Going to university opens up so many career options for you, only 15% of those who graduated from university are unemployed, whereas 27% of people without higher education are jobless. Working at a graduate level, at a stable career firm, will also get you a higher salary.

Finally, if you do read this and decide that university may be a possible choice, remember that it not only allows you to follow your dreams and passions but you’ll be having a great, memorable time whilst studying what you love.

THE BOYS AND GIRLS IN THE CLIQUE ...

Have you ever seen the same groups hanging out during break or wondered what other people think of your friendship group?

Well, even if you haven’t, we have, so we found out exactly how important friends and social circles are to college life.

Behold, the school’s central nervous system!

We all know the generic Mean Girls groups: jocks, nerds, hipsters, selfie squad, card players, geeks, and the best people you’ll ever meet, (*cough* us *cough*) and then of course the worst … the plastics. But how relevant are these stereotypes to our college? Well, we interviewed the infamous and self-proclaimed “Glee” group about what they thought about being classed by a stereotype. Harry and Paige told us that they “couldn’t care less” about being seen in this orthodox way because “we are here to express ourselves.” This view was echoed throughout our interviewees as they all shared the collective opinion that stereotyping their friendship circle was not insulting.

But is it still acceptable? I mean, we all know how Mean Girls ended…

Nevertheless, not all of us identify ourselves as belonging to one of these categories. So is how we perceive ourselves more important to how others might view us? We asked one first year, Tori, what self-identity meant to him.

He expressed his view that “identity” to him was a sense of “community and belonging.” From this, it seems that friendship groups can be important to our sense of self.

Is our identity linked to who we are friends with? Emma believes that your friends can say a lot about your identity as they can “influence” and “bring out the best in you.”

However, Jordan, another frequent card player, thinks

that friendship groups are not very important because “at the end of the day, the only person you can trust is yourself.” So maybe how you perceive your own identity is subjective. Each person measures their own character in different ways, whether that be by culture, upbringing, personality or social clique.

But what is it that makes us look forward to spending time with the same group of people? All humans have fundamental desire to belong and to be an accepted

member of a group because the need to belong is the need to give and receive affection from others, #science.

All the people we interviewed told us that they considered their friendship group to be approachable which implies that we have an open, accepting community here at college, in which people feel a sense of belonging and inclusiveness. We asked people if they found it easy to fit in with their group of friends and they told us that they found it “pretty easy” to befriend people who were taking similar subjects as them because many had common interests and opinions.

So, what have we learnt? Well we’ve learnt about the boys and girls in the clique; the awful names that they stick. Any who, the last thing we asked our interviewees was to tell us one thing they loved about their group of friends. The responses we gained ranged from “they get it”, “it’s comfortable”, and “everyone’s different”. So, we can conclude that friendship groups and social circles are central to life at college because people who share common interests and make each other feel accepted contribute to the positive and inclusive ethos of our college.

My name is Linda Summers, and I am the Chair of the Corporation (the governing body) at the College.

The role of the Governors is to make sure the College is doing all the things it should: like providing good quality teaching, being efficiently run, and managing its money well. It is very important for governors to listen to the views of the students at the college and to understand the impact which our decisions have on you. We do this in a number of ways, for example: • One of our governors is a current student. Our student governor serves a term of one year, from Easter to Easter, and takes a full part in all the business of the Corporation • Our student governor leads a standing item at every Corporation meeting where he shares with us current matters of particular interest to students • At the end of every meeting of the Corporation and its sub-committees, we look back on our discussions and decisions to ensure that they have had a positive impact on the experience of students at the college

• We continuously look for opportunities to reflect the issues which are important to you in our work.

For example, our Audit Committee has this year commissioned a review of the student experience – this review will examine some of the important elements that make up your college life (such as pastoral care and enrichment activities) and check that they are being delivered as well as possible • Although many of our meetings are in the evenings (due to our other work commitments) we take as many opportunities as we can to meet with students, at events such as the annual Celebration Evening and at a recent breakfast meeting with the Student Union Executive The governors are very proud to be part of such a successful college with a great group of students. Now it is a common belief that libraries aren’t needed in today’s society, but what many people forget is that there are many important documents that you can’t just find on the internet. Libraries provide books suitable for all ages and have been very influential to many people when they were younger. Though it is sad for me to say it, if we don’t do anything, public libraries may not exist in the next 10 or so years. Without libraries we would not have much, if any, recorded history. As centres of knowledge, we must remember the impact they have had on our world history.

Due to the government having to make cuts, there has been a drastic decrease of spending on public libraries.

This has resulted in most full time librarians being made redundant, making those who are still employed over worked. This has given way to public libraries being staffed by members of the local community with only a few paid supervisors.

This grey cloud does have a silver lining, because now is probably the best time to volunteer at a library near you.

Not only does it provide you with plenty of work to keep yourself busy, it also aids the community at keeping alive a part of our history. In truth it will look very appealing

So for any of you budding bookworms don’t let the libraries die, volunteer now and do your part for the preservation of knowledge!

LIGHTS, CAMERA...SOCIETY? An insight into the newest addition to the college’s enrichment programme.

Could you create an Indie sensation? Are you a budding young filmmaker? Do you want to take a crack at directing?

Are you looking for an outlet to unleash your creative juices? Well have I got something for you! All joking aside, there is a fantastic opportunity for every aspiring director, writer and technician.

The HNC Film Society is also a great opportunity to build a portfolio for universities or possible employers, you can build a catalogue of your work and allow universities or employers to view your work as a director, writer or technician. The society isn’t just for those who wish to pursue a career in the technical aspects of the film and television industry.

The Huddersfield New College Film Society is a student-run group designed to be the perfect way to unleash your work upon the world. The society was founded recently by HNC student Ethan Barnes who said that the idea is that: “Anyone can come along and pitch their ideas and people within the meetings can say things like: ‘I’ll do the lighting’ or ‘I’d like to make some costumes’. I want to do this because it can be hard to make projects happen independently; this just creates a way for people to have a team available all the time.”

A wonderful opportunity for actors has also presented itself in the form of the HNC Film Society! As an actor you can also build a portfolio as there will be many people coming forward with work that will need lead roles and extras alike. No matter what your aspirations may entail, you can secure a ‘one up’ over many people who may be looking for the same position as you, however, due to your experience and your willingness to devote your own time to your aspirations, you will more than likely have the upper hand.

The Huddersfield New College Film Society’s meetings will be held in the media classrooms, in the media centre. The meetings will consist of people making storyboards and writing scripts along with constructive feedback on work and help with planning projects. To join, all anyone has to
