THE ROTTEN ROMANS This information booklet is for parents to explain about the work the children will undertake this term.

Rights Respecting Values At Shawclough School we enable children to fulfil their role as responsible citizens, now and in the future, by developing skills and independence, creativity and teamwork. As part of thinking independently we seek to develop each child’s ability to make informed choices, recognising that their actions contribute towards ensuring that the rights of all are respected.

The Rotten Romans 

As Historians we will be investigating the impact of the Romans on our lives. Using different sources of evidence, including visits, we’ll develop our understanding of the Romans and the Celts.



As Geographers we will learn about how the Roman Empire developed



As Designers we will investigate the properties of clay and produce a Roman Oil lamp.



As Scientists we will investigate materials. We will discover how to classify them, what they are used for and how they can be changed.



As Artists we will make a Roman Mosaic and use the Trompe l’oeil technique to create a picture of a Roman column.



As Computer Scientists we will create Roman Mosaics and other tessellating art. We will create our own Wiki.



In Religious Education we will explore the theme of what makes a good neighbour and ceremonies form different faiths.



As Musicians we will learn about the importance of Roman chanting whilst marching. We will listen to and appreciate Italian and Operatic music.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP THEIR CHILDREN AT HOME WITH THE WORK OF THIS THEME



As Mathematicians we will be learning about Roman Numerals and compare the cost of living in Roman Britain and today.

 As Linguists, in Spanish the Year 4 children will learn about food and drink in Spanish speaking countries. The Year 5 children will read and write descriptions.





In Games the Year 4 children will either go swimming or play quick cricket. The Year 5 children will become athletes.

 



As Gymnasts we will be taking part in creating individual and group sequences using different apparatus.







In Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education we will be exploring how to deal with feelings, changes and stereotypes.



In English we will be reading and re-telling a variety of stories about the Romans and the Celts.



Please make sure your child has a pencil, crayons and a ruler to complete homework.

Visit the local library and borrow information books about the Romans or Celts Ask the librarian about stories which are set in Roman times – you might enjoy reading them out loud to each other Visit Chester’s fascinating Roman Museums Children love making models, the Romans give lots of opportunities to try - helmets, shields, sandals, etc.

The School Drivers At Shawclough we have carefully considered which skills will be needed by our children to make sure that they become effective learners now and in their future. Throughout our curriculum we will encourage children to ‘learn how to learn’ by becoming independent learners, team workers, reflective learners, creative thinkers and self-managers through a variety of activities.
