Curriculum Overview for Hawks Year 5/6 (including Miss Deane’s Literacy and Maths Groups) Spring 2 2014/2015 English Our overall theme in Literacy this half term will be ‘Heroes and Villains’ During week 1, we will be investigating poetry features and developing ideas to support our poetry writing in week 2. Children will consider poetry features such as onomatopoeia, rhyming and alliteration. They will also consolidate their understanding of vocabulary related to poetry.

During weeks 3-5, children will be reading and investigating a new Beast Quest book (this proved very popular during Spring 1 and children produced some fantastic work). We will investigate creative use of language and the structure of sentences and paragraphs with a view to becoming authors and writing the next chapter from a mid point in the book.

Art & Design We also have a daily focus on grammar in my literacy group and we will be focusing on identified needs such as including subordinate clauses in writing, use of varied punctuation and identifying verbs, adverbs, adjectives, nouns and pronouns. Children will also be taught to use apostrophes correctly to show both possession and omission.

Design & Technology

Mathematics In maths this half term, we will be focussing on space shape and measure as this is an identified area for development. We will, however, also continue to work on key written calculations for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in the context of word problems and we will be having further independent problem solving sessions.

In particular, children will be given the opportunity to investigate and develop their understanding of both regular and irregular polygons. They will then reflect, rotate and translate these shapes. Children should know the names of all regular polygons and this will be a focus both in class and as homework.

Science Our focus this half term is Exercise, Health and the Circulatory System and the learning goals are as follows: LO: To identify the main parts of the human circulatory system. LO: To understand that the heart is a major organ made of muscle. LO: To describe the functions of the heart, blood and blood vessels. LO: To understand that the blood carries oxygen to different parts of the body and that the heart pumps the blood around the body through blood vessels. LO: To understand that the blood being pumped through the body can be felt through the pulse. Template created by Michael Tidd 2013

In relation to problem solving, children will be expected to work as part of a team to solve problems, discussing ideas and independently deciding on how to record results. Our maths work will also be extending to science as the children will need to both collect and record results.

Science LO: To understand that during exercise muscles need more oxygen so the heart beats faster and our breathing and pulse rate increases. LO: To create an exercise trail with vigorous less energetic and rest stations. LO: To explain the purpose behind each station and what is happening in the body at each point in the trail. LO: To recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and life style on the way your body functions. LO: To understand that tobacco, alcohol and other ‘drugs’ can be harmful. LO: To understand that all medicines are drugs, not all drugs are medicines.
