Curriculum Overview for Year 2 English Children will write about real events using a specific text type features to write for a range of audiences and purposes e.g. to inform. The children will be producing a fact book including present tense non-chronological reports about ‘Explorers’. Children will be making lists, identifying features of non- chronological reports and locating information using both books and the internet to find an answer. They will use subordination for reason, e.g. build on because and so (autumn term), extend to other reason connectives; if, then, for, unless.
The children will read aloud a range of books, closely matched to their improving phonics knowledge, sounding out unfamiliar words accurately, automatically and without undue hesitation in keeping with our ‘Explorers’ topic. They will check that texts make sense while reading and self-correct. They will read a range of non-fiction texts including information, explanations, instructions, recounts, reports and discuss how specific information is organised within a non-fiction text, e.g. text boxes, sub-headings, contents, bullet points, glossary, diagrams
Art & Design We will be writing fantasy stories about an explorer’s adventures. We will be using adjectives, clauses and conjunctions to describe the setting and the characters. Children will make choices about their own learning and progression in writing by looking at writing features and making decisions based on previous work feedback about what they want to include in their own reports. Children edit and improve their own writing in relation to audience and purpose by proofread to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation
We will begin by looking practically at fractions. The children will use the term denominator and numerator and show halves and quarters of shapes, objects and sets of numbers. . With time we will focus on telling and writing the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times. They will know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day.
We will look at patterns and sequences in numbers and explore how addition and subtraction are the inverse of each other and work on number bonds to 20. Children will recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers. We will calculate mathematical statements for division using our prior knowledge of multioplication and write them using the division (÷) and equals (=) signs. Children will solve problems involving division, using materials, arrays, repeated subtraction and sharing, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.
Science
In Science the children will be exploring plants, with particular emphasis on seeds. They will be looking closely at seeds and

Design & Technology We will explore existing products and see how they have been made, for example, a simple toy car. The children will be making simple vehicles using a range of materials, including wheels and axels.
Read and use suffixes (ed, est, ing. Er), as appropriate.
Mathematics
Through our topic activities we will be exploring a range of different media.
The children will estimate, compare and measure objects using non-standard units of measurements for weight, length and capacity. They will choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm) to the nearest appropriate unit using rulers. Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and threequarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise).
History This half term we will be recognise the difference between past and present and identify similarities and differences between ways of life at different times. The children will be expected to use phrases of time, such as before, after, a long time ago and in the past.
Computing The children will give and follow commands to navigate around a course. We will explore and created sequences of commands and make predictions, describing the effects when creating instructions. The children will aim to identify errors with instructions and understand that devices respond to commands. They will also understand that devices from home and the wider world can be controlled by commands.
Geography We will be naming and locating the continents and oceans and using a range of maps and globes to locate. The children will be asked to recognise simple features on maps. We will be asking simple geographical questions about the world and a contrasting locating and will use simple electronic maps, such as Google maps.
They will use pictures and words of what they want to design and think of more than one idea for their product. The children will evaluate their work and think about how it meets the needs of their user.
Phonics & Reading We will continue to follow the ‘Phonics Play’ planning scheme at your child’s phonics level. Our Reading Scheme follows the ’Oxford Reading Tree.
Music
We will be experimenting with and creating musical patterns and experiencing how sounds can be made in different ways. The children will experience pitch, dynamics and tempo.
