Curriculum Overview for Year 1 English The children will be writing a non-chronological report all about ‘Explorers’. They will be looking at report features and making decisions about what they want to include in their own reports. Children will be making lists and locating information in both books and using the internet to find an answer.

Art & Design We will be thinking about stories with fantasy settings. The children will read a range of books, keeping with our ‘Explorers’ theme and will write their own sort stories.

Design & Technology Mathematics

We will look at weight and time, focusing on comparing different weights and making direct comparisons. With time we will focus on telling the time to the hour and half past the hour.

The children will measure objects using non-standard units of measurements (cubes), Estimate and compare lengths: Find a difference in height/length and find numbers with a given difference.

Science In Science the children will be exploring plants, with particular emphasis on seeds. They will be looking closely at seeds and bulbs and making observational drawings. The children will be naming parts of a plant, thinking about plants as living things. The children will learn that a seed has a tiny plant inside and will explore this first hand. The children will test what a seed needs to germinate.

Through our topic activities we will be exploring a range of different media.

We will begin to understand the term ‘capacity’, compare different capacities by direct comparison, estimate, measure and compare capacities using uniform nonstandard units; Present data in pictograms and block graphs and answer questions about them.

History This half term we will be recognise the difference between past and present and identify similarities and differences between ways of life at different times. The children will be expected to use phrases of time, such as before, after, a long time ago and in the past.

The children will make simple comparisons between events, such as the discoveries of Christopher Columbus. The children will ask and answer questions about the past using different sources and

We will explore existing products and see how they have been made, for example, a simple toy car. The children will be making simple vehicles using a range of materials, including wheels and axels. They will use pictures and words of what they want to design and think of more than one idea for their product. The children will evaluate their work and think about how it meets the needs of their user.

Computing The children will give and follow commands to navigate around a course. We will explore and created sequences of commands and make predictions, describing the effects when creating instructions. The children will aim to identify errors with instructions and understand that devices respond to commands. They will also understand that devices from home and the wider world can be controlled by commands.

Geography We will be naming and locating the continents and oceans and using a range of maps and globes to locate. The children will be asked to recognise simple features on maps. We will be asking simple geographical questions about the world and a contrasting locating and will use simple electronic maps, such as Google maps.

Phonics and Reading We will continue to follow the ‘Phonics Play’ planning scheme at your child’s phonics level. Our Reading Scheme follows the ’Oxford Reading Tree.

Physical

Education

We will be continuing with both gymnastics and dance this half term. The children will be creating an ‘Explorers’ dance, imagining they are on the moon, in the jungle and in the Arctic. In gym we will continue with balances, sequences of balances and using equipment to move along.

Music We will be experimenting with and creating musical patterns and experiencing how sounds can be made in different ways. The children will experience pitch, dynamics and tempo.

Religious

Education

We will be looking at who Christians are, where they worship and how they worship. We will learn the Lord’s prayer and re-writing it in our own words and looking symbols of Easter. www.primarycurriculum.me.uk
