A season of struggles and hope for women’s, men’s basketball Men’s Basketball The Schreiner men’s basketball team (3-11 overall, 3-9 ASC) started the season slowly, but have showed significant improvement as the calendar turned to 2006. The team won two of their first four games in ’06: vs. Louisiana College and at Concordia-Austin. Even in the losses, Schreiner was in virtually every game going into the closing minutes. The best reason for optimism is that head coach Thirman Dimery’s team continues to improve and always plays hard. The challenge is that much of the remaining schedule is away from Kerrville and against the upper division teams in the ASC West. The Mountaineers are led by juniors Jonathan Young (13 points, 4.5 rebounds) and Kevin Deans (13.5 points, 5 rebounds) and seniors Joseph Davis (8 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) and Lance Hrncir (11 points, 4 rebounds). Women’s Basketball For the SU women’s basketball team, like the men’s team, 2006 has brought more success. The Schreiner women’s team
Schreiner Students Excel in Global Competition A group of Schreiner University business students captured 12th place out of 1,694 teams in a recent global competition. Team members who competed in the CAPSTONE Global Corporate Simulation Competition as team “Baldwin” are Mark Lenzo, Channan Cardella, and Amanda Brown, all of Kerrville; and Bradley McDonald of San Antonio. Brown said the competition was an amazing opportunity to integrate all of the skills and knowledge she has accumulated in the past four years as a student in Schreiner’s Cailloux School of Professional Studies. “In this simulation, we were able to see how decisions in each area of a business affect other areas and impact the success of the company as a whole,” Brown said. “We experienced conflicts in ideas and priorities within a management team and found solutions. We were able to see the importance of an overall company strategy and defined objectives for all members to be working towards. We formed a hard-working, dynamic leadership team with many talents. We are very pleased with the achievements of our virtual company, and hope we can use all that we learned through this experience to be successful in the business world.” Mark D. Woodhull, instructor of business administration and the team’s faculty sponsor, said the competition is a business student’s culminating experience after four years of business studies. “The corporate CAPSTONE simulation offered by Management Simulations Incorporated (MSI) provides our students with a challenging venue for exercising their business knowledge and skills and a global arena in which they can compete with over 1,600 other university academic and corporate executive teams,” Woodhull said. This is the third year Schreiner has competed.
is 5-11 overall, 5-9 (at the time this went to press) in the ASC, and got hot in January, going 4-3. The Mountaineers started fast, winning in new head coach Jeanette McKinney’s first game (a 96-87 overtime road win at Texas Lutheran), then went through a winless streak, but bounced back in the new year. Not only are the wins starting to come, the really good news is that this very young team has three emerging stars that it hopes to count on for at least the next two years. Freshman point guard Monica Enriquez leads the ASC in both scoring (20 points per game) and steals (5 per game) and is fourth in assists. Sophomore forward Vanessa Lopez is third in the ASC in scoring (19 points per game) and fourth in shooting percentage. Freshman forward Tasha Fennell is third in rebounding at 8.5 per game. The team has battled injury and illness and will be better off in the long run for what they’ve endured this year, said McKinney.
