Part of our role as school based mental health clinicians and school employees is to support the programmatic initiatives through our work. This may leave you wondering how mental health clinicians could possibly support math achievement. Honestly, we had to do some thinking in this area as well! We recalled a discussion that was had with the principal during pre-planning that touched on the power of positive self talk. BINGO!

The power of positive self-affirmation is a pretty big deal. Math is no different. There are some of us who thrive in the area of math and there are others of us have been self proclaimed, "not a math person" or "bad at math." No matter your personal belief about math, as a school community, we have the power to instill positive thoughts about math into every student who walks through our school doors. From this day forward, speak the strength of numbers into the life of each student. From cooking in the kitchen, to playing card games like UNO, playing board games like Monopoly, keeping score in sports, or counting your change after making a purchase, we have the power to influence our relationship with math. Let's change the narrative together! We aren't scared of big numbers!
