SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 1, September 12, 2014

NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Hi, everyone. Welcome back to School. Firstly, I need to congratulate and thank our Custodial staff for their fine work this summer. It is always a pleasure to walk down the shiny hallways at the beginning of school. Our staff members do an incredible job all year keeping the building clean and presentable. We are all very appreciative of the effort, pride, and commitment you all displayed. Students and staff, let’s work hard to keep the building as pristine as possible. Thank you, Marcel Delaurier, Carolyn Usunier, Albert Swaenepoel, Dennis White, Eric McRae, Kaylee Butterfield, and Brianna Williams. 34 kindergarten students officially began their academic journey at Souris School this week. What an exciting time it must be in those households. As well, we have added 8 students this term through the Study Manitoba Program from Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and Cuba. Six of the students are in Gr. 11 and 2 students are in Gr. 12. Welcome to Souris School. We have been very busy these past few days finalizing timetables with students. Two years ago, we made some changes to the procedures to enter a course or to drop a course. The biggest change is that we want our students to be conversing with our teachers to make sure that they have the information they need to make an informed decision. As well, we want to ensure that the parents of the student and the School Principal are all aware of the decision. That way, I can be confident that the student and his/her family are making an informed decision.

We now have the same locker policy for all students from gr. 5-12. We have provided combination locks to each student with its own unique ID number and combination. Each lock can now be cross-referenced to a locker and to a student. As well, each lock can be opened with a Master Key in case a student forgets a combination. This year, we have added lockers in the hallway to our gr. 3-4 classrooms. These will not have a lock on them. They will simply have a hook to keep the door closed. It is our intention to install lockers for the rest of the Early Year classrooms over the next two years. Thank you to all our coaches who have volunteered to work with our young student-athletes. Many of life’s most valuable lessons can be learned on the court or on the field. It is great that our students have so many opportunities to participate in the various sports that we offer. We have had incidences of head lice reported in Early, Middle and Senior Year’s classes. It is very important that parents check their children on a regular basis and begin treatment if necessary. We emphasize the need to remove all nits to ensure the cycle stops. Please continue to contact the school if you do find lice and letters can be sent home so we can try and stop the continuation of the cycle. Names will remain confidential. More information is available at the school or you can call Mrs. Elizabeth Rose at 483-6221.

Finally, just a reminder that there is a “No Parking” sign on Lansdowne Street right in front of the Gymnasium entrance to the School. That area has been reserved for Daycare Dropoff and Pickup. Please do not park in that area. As well, please remember that no vehicles are to enter or exit the EAST entrance of the School Parking lot between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM

and 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM. Finally, just a reminder of the 30 KM/H speed zone around Souris School. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. That is all for now. Enjoy the weekend – you’ve earned it.
