N EW S F RO M M R. W IL L IA M S Wow. What a beautiful week of weather. Perhaps we should all head back to the lake! We need your assistance to address a couple of issues relating to the end of the School Day. The School office is a very hectic place at the end of the day. We often receive phone messages and instructions from parents of students that are to be passed on to children before 3:15 PM. Also, sometimes, students are confused about their after school plans and come down to the Office to make a phone call to their parents to confirm. At the same time we are attempting to send and receive messages from School Bus drivers on our bus radio phone. We do our best to get every message to the right place, but at times there is still confusion. Often the end of the day arrives and we are still receiving messages. These situations do not solely involve bus students. We understand that things come up during the day and plans might have to change. How can you help? To the Parents of Bus Students: If your child is wanting to bring a friend(s) on the bus with them please make sure, as a courtesy, to contact your route driver to request permission to do so. Eg. Birthday Party. Please have this arrangement made in advance to ensure a smooth departure from school at the end of the day. If this has not occurred the student may be denied transportation on the school bus and will have to stay at school until a parent/guardian picks them up. Rationale: 1. Some of our busses are at capacity and additional students may make it overloaded; 2. Our bus drivers are to have an accurate passenger log at all times. This can be difficult if a rider brings 5 friends home for a birthday party and the driver does not know the children. 3. Legally, we are in care and control of all students from the time they leave home in the morning to the time they arrive home at the end of the day. To the Parents of All Students: In the Early Years end, please make sure to send a note in your child’s agenda or a note to the teacher of special after school plans. Also, when possible, if you need to make a call to the Office

to pass on a message please try to do so earlier in the day. Any questions, just ask. Thank you for support in this matter. Parent Teacher conference this year will be on: Tuesday, November 18th from 5 PM to 8 PM Wednesday, November 19th from 4 PM to 6:30 PM You will be receiving a couple of emails over the next week regarding “Thoughtexchange”. One message will be sent from Mrs. Cory, our Superintendent. The other message will be sent on behalf of me. These are not Spam messages. They are an invitation to you to provide your input about Souris School. Thanks Have a great week. SENIOR YEARS AWADS All are welcome to attend the Senior Years Awards on Wednesday, October 29th at 11:00 a.m. in the gym. These awards are for students who were in grade 9, 10 and 11 during the 2013-2014 school year. K-8 NEWS Fire Chief For a Day – A special “thank you” to the Souris Fire Department for providing our grade 4 students with the opportunity to travel to Brandon Fire Hall and participate in the “Fire Chief for a Day” program. Julieanne Dornian and Eduardo Espitia-Mora were our two lucky students whose names were drawn to participate in this event. It was a great day for our students, and again, “Thank you to our local fire department”! Early Years Christmas Concert - This year we are looking for parents and community members to organize the extra-curricular Christmas concert. At this point in time, we do not have any volunteers to organize this event. Firstly, we need to determine if there is an interest in putting on a concert this year. If so, we will then need to generate ideas and begin the planning and practicing process. Anyone interested in helping make this event happen, please plan to attend a meeting on November 3 rd at 7:00pm in the library at Souris School. Questions can be forwarded to Mandy or Jaycee at sourispac@shmb.ca Bike Helmet Orders – A synervoice message was sent out to K-8 parents this week regarding the opportunity regarding the “Low-Cost Bike Helmet Program” sponsored by Manitoba Healthy Schools. If you are interested in purchasing helmets for $15, please forward your forms and money to your child’s homeroom teacher by

November 7th. More forms are available at the school office.

of the secretaries to set up a payment plan. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Lice Checks – We have had additional reports of lice in our school. We do encourage parents to regularly conduct “head checks”. A good time to do this is Friday night and if you find any nits you can treat on the weekend and be good for school on Monday. To do a head check: you should have good lighting, part the hair in small sections going from one side of the head to the other, look close to the scalp. Also check behind the ears, back of the neck and top of the head. Nits are firmly attached to the hair close to the scalp. Treat all infested household members at the same time.

SOURIS SCHOOL SENIOR YEARS STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS This month we kicked off our annual magazine campaign. We are still a long way from our goal so students sell, sell, sell!

If you do find lice, wash items most likely to transmit lice: hats, bedding, furry coat collars scarves and dry in drier. Soak combs, brushes and hair clips in hot soapy water for 15 minutes. Seal other items in a plastic bag for 10 days or place in freezer for 24 hours.

On October 31st we will be having a costume contest with prizes and a pumpkin carving contest. Costume categories will be: Best Group, Cutest Couple, Most Creative and the Funniest. Teams for the pumpkin carving can be up to 4 people, $5 per member. Register on the 27th or contact Parker Janz to sign up. We will be hosting a special motivational speaker, Shawn Booth here on November 7th at 9:00 a.m. His presentation is based on goal setting and there are no limits.

Halloween Activities – On Friday, October 31st afternoon, our K-8 students will be participating in Halloween activities. K – 4: A letter has been sent home to our Early Years parents, outlining these events. 5 -8 : Our students will be participating in a Halloween “sock hop” in the afternoon, beginning at 2:00 pm. We also request that student costumes be school appropriate, without the use of weapons. Students will be putting their costumes on at noon. Regular classes will take place the morning of the 31st. Scholastic Book Fair – We will be hosting our annual Scholastic Book Fair again this year! It will occur during parent-teacher conferences on November 18th and 19th. This year our Early Years staff will be organizing the event with all proceeds of the Book Fair going towards providing resources for our Early Years classroom librairies! Due to the fact that our staff will be tied up with interviews, we are looking for parent volunteers who would be willing to work during the time of interviews on these two evenings – Tuesday, Nov. 18th 5:00-8:00; and Wednesday, Nov. 19th 4:006:30 pm. Responsibilities would include the monitoring of student volunteers; supervision of financial transactions; and general supervision of the event. If you are interested in donating your time for this fund-raising event for literacy, please contact Mrs. Rolfe at 483-6233. SCHOOL FEES School fees were due on September 30th. If you have not paid your fees yet, please contact the school at 204-483-2161 and speak to either one

Student Council will be auctioning off two premium parking spots for students on the 27th and 29th of October. If your name is drawn on the 30th, you will get one of the spots for the month of November and December. Tickets will be 1 for $2.00 or 3 for $5.00.

Bring in your Coats for Kids donations and help out someone in need this season with a new or gently worn jacket. There will be a box at the office. Also the mitten tree is coming up so get your donations for that ready. If you would like to get a 2013-2014 yearbook, they are still available at the office for $45.00. HALLOWEEN FOR HUNGER Every Halloween, youth around the world take action to fight local hunger by participating in Free The Children’s Annual Halloween for Hunger campaign. Hello everyone, we are a group of Middle Years student that are volunteering our time this year to people in need. Our first project is Halloween for Hunger. This month our committee hopes to collect non- perishable food items for the local Souris Food Bank. We are asking that items for the Food Bank be dropped off at Souris School in front of the office before October 30th. We are also willing to come pick up items at your home in Souris between 4:00-6:00, Friday October 30th. If you wish to have items picked up, please call the Souris School office (483-2161) and push 0 and leave your name and address with the secretary. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this most worthwhile cause! Sincerely, The Make Changers and Social Justice Fighters (Middle Years Committees of Souris School)

ATTENTION TRICK OR TREATERS Please take the time to stop by the Personal Care Home as they will be handing out treat bags for Halloween. It brings much happiness to the residents to see all the costumes and interact with the trick or treaters. CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABEL COLLECTION Our K-8 students celebrated last week with the arrival of equipment that we received from the Campbell’s Labels for Education Program. By collecting labels from participating Campbell products, we are able to redeem them for sports equipment and games for our school. A sheet with all the eligible labels can be seen on the Souris School website. Please take the time to check it out. Bring all Campbell Soup Labels to the Collection Boxes to help us purchase new items for our school. Your support is appreciated.
