year for the real estate market. Residents are reevaluating their lifestyle preferences, with many prioritizing more square footage and sought-after amenities in suburban areas over micro-units in larger cities. As multifamily housing becomes a longer-term option for people of all ages and incomes, developers are tasked with finding new ways to satisfy the market’s changing needs.

ith an ever-evolving need to resolve manmade environmental issues, sustainable design and building can play an integral role in creating a logical path forward for mankind and the environment.

It is important to take into consideration the methods in which we are building and designing and how sustainable design practices can influence our process from start to finish and beyond. There are many

benefits of sustainable design and building as it raises the bar by addressing efficiency in energy, water conservation, site selection, material choices, and affecting the overall performance of the home.

Understanding the parallel between active and passive energy is critical. Energy efficiency is the most cost-effective strategy for reducing heating and cooling bills. In addition, Passive Design takes advantage of a building’s site, climate, and materials to minimize energy consumption. A well-designed passive home first reduces heating and cooling loads through energy-efficient strategies and then supplements the reduced loads with solar or geothermal energy. As important as it may be to avoid too many north facing windows in cooler climates, it is also especially important to avoid oversizing south-facing glass and ensure that south-facing glass is properly shaded to prevent overheating and increased cooling loads in the warmer months.

ach year, our association partners with Autodesk to conduct an industry survey of the state of the construction labor market. We do this so we can

understand whether our member firms are able to find qualified workers to hire, the impacts of any labor shortages on the broader industry and what those shortages mean for the overall economy.

This year things appear to be quite different. Since the start of the pandemic, the construction industry has shed more than 400,000 jobs as demand for projects has stalled in many parts of the country.

So, we recrafted our workforce survey to measure the impacts of the coronavirus on the construction workforce and the overall industry. We also wanted to get a sense of how firms were adapting to the new realities and what kinds of relief measures could help the industry.

What the responses to this year’s survey made clear is that the coronavirus is delivering a one-two punch to the construction industry.

On one hand, the pandemic is undermining demand for construction, prompting project delays and cancellations, layoffs and furloughs.

Yet at the same time, it is contributing to conditions that make it difficult for a majority of firms to find craft workers to hire.

Sixty percent of responding firms report having at least one future project postponed or canceled because of the coronavirus, while 33 percent report having projects that were already underway halted because of the pandemic. The share of firms reporting canceled projects has nearly doubled since we conducted our last coronavirus survey in mid-June, when 32 percent of respondents reported cancellations.

“At the beginning of 2020, we were riding a strong wave of growth and moving forward with a number of new projects,” Sherwin details. “Then, as we all now know, in March of last year the Covid-19 pandemic really began to take hold and we found ourselves having to look at how we could weather that storm, salvage as many projects as we could, and progressively source new opportunities.

Fortunately, our company is one that is very strong fiscally, we have great people within our organization, and our collective values of integrity and honesty meant that we knew that we would all be able to support one another during the most challenging of times.”

In the early days of the shutdown, some nervous homebuyers decided not to buy luxury homes after all. Millions of dollars of sales evaporated.

Perhaps they didn’t want an addition or a big, blown-out remodel, but while making all that sourdough, they realized the kitchen could use an update. Or maybe the bathroom was getting tired. So, we came up with this idea for a Rapid Remodel program, in which we could start from a few base designs and price points, customize options and have the whole thing installed in a really short timeframe - say, four weeks to plan and then another four weeks from demolition to beautiful new kitchen or bath.”

“Interviews with prospective clients are a standard practice. According to Matthew, clients are growing increasingly creative with their plans and, on average, custom properties at Boot Ranch are growing larger and more detailed year on year.

“Most people have a fairly strict budget, but the most significant trend at present is a move to more outdoor living spaces,” Matthew reports. “A lot of our clients are relocating from colder areas where the weather is not as nice, so the impetus in design has been on smaller interior square footages and more focus spent outside.”

At the end of 2020, as Mabery’s attentions turned to a new year, the company added a number of new staff members at its head office, with a particular focus on ensuring that the firm is harnessing the latest technology.

This technological emphasis has led to the integration of a new software platform that enables Mabery, its clients and its subcontractors to stay connected and abreast of the latest project developments.

“The new app means that everyone involved in a project can access and input data remotely from anywhere,” Matthew states. “It is really useful for homeowners because we don’t

“The interesting thing that we have found this year, is that Covid-19 has actually created a pent-up demand for our services within the Jupiter and Palm Beach areas,” Dan points out.

“This, we believe, is due to a large number of affluent people who have a desire to leave the urban environment behind in the wake of the pandemic. Other contributing factors to a rise in demand in our region include high taxation and civil unrest in the North Eastern and Midwestern States, and increasing migration from the West Coast of the United States into Southern Florida.”

Reflecting on the success of the business, Dan recognizes that its ability to interact successfully with people – whether it be contractors, stake holders, vendors or clients – has proven to be just as important as its building work itself. “This business is a people one, and we need to successfully manage a variety, from the day laborer to the design team, to the high-end client. It is indeed a daily challenge, but one that we take extremely seriously as we endeavor to treat everyone as we ourselves would expect to be treated.”
