RALLYING IN SUPPORT OF CANCER RESEARCH

The annual Kick Cancer Pep Rally & 5K Run once again rallied a great turnout, with 485 participants uniting in the fight against cancer. Among them, 204 individuals proudly represented SCUCISD, with the Paschal Patriots team bringing the largest team with 90 runners. This substantial community support underscores the enduring commitment to battling cancer and supporting vital research initiatives.

The energy of the Pep Rally was electric, with the Clemens Drumline setting the rhythm and the Clemens Cheer team igniting the crowd with their spirited performance. The energy continued to amp up as Orange Theory led participants in a lively warm-up session, preparing everyone for the run ahead. A new addition this year, was the Hardcore Athletics all-star cheer team showing support and cheering on each runner throughout the race route. The combination of the cheer squad’s infectious energy and the drumline’s thunderous rhythm created an atmosphere of pure community pride.

The event, which began in 2009 to honor the courageous battle of former Schertz City Councilmember Tony Wilenchik against stage-4 Leiomyosarcoma cancer, has led to over $227,500 total donations toward the cause and has evolved into a cherished annual tradition. It serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity for those affected by cancer, as well as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in advancing cancer research and treatment.

This year, our Iron Sponsors, Schertz Cibolo Emergency Clinic and HEB, played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the event. Their generous contributions, alongside the support of our dedicated t-shirt sponsors including State Farm-Nathan Obregon, Schertz Bank & Trust, SAMCO Capital, GVEC, Hardcore Athletics, REMAX Corridor, and Renewal by Anderson, helped us raise a substantial amount for cancer research.

Over $10,500 was raised at this year’s event for the UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center to aid in their research and it could have not been done without the unwavering support of the community members and sponsors – thank you!

Clean the Creek Event a Huge Success!

On Saturday, March 8, the community came together for another successful Clean the Creek event to pick up trash and debris along the Cibolo Creek and help keep Schertz beautiful. With perfect weather for outdoor activity, 163 volunteers rolled up their sleeves, joining forces with city staff from several different departments including Neighborhood Services, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, and others.

In addition to the city's efforts, organizations like Bexar County Environmental Law and River Aid lent their support. Volunteers combed the creek, picking up a considerable amount of trash, filling almost a full 40yard roll-off container. It's clear that the

event made a significant impact on improving the creek and surrounding areas.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event a huge success!

YEARS

Public Safety Communications Manager Honored for 20 Years of Service

THE CITY OF SCHERTZ IS PROUD OF OUR EMPLOYEES AND WE ARE INCREDIBLY THANKFUL FOR THEIR GREAT SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO OUR COMMUNITY.

Nichole Kuhlmann has dedicated two decades of her life to serving the City of Schertz, starting her career on October 4, 2004, as a Communications Officer, answering 911 and non-emergency calls. Over the years, Nichole mastered the critical art of directing first responders, from the early days of paper logs and basic computer systems to now managing cuttingedge technology. As the city grew, so did her role within the department. She became the first Communications Shift Supervisor in December 2008, where she contributed to training, interviews,

personnel management, and numerous other essential duties.

In May 2021, Nichole was promoted to Public Safety Communications Manager, overseeing the entire Communications Division. One of her proudest achievements in this role was leading the Dispatch Refresh project, a $240,000 initiative funded by a Bexar Metro 911 grant. Despite facing setbacks, she completed the project with the help of her dedicated team. Nichole's hard work and perseverance have earned her several accolades,

including Dispatcher of the Year for both Schertz and Cibolo, Civilian Supervisor of the Year for 2022, and the prestigious Chief’s Award for 2023.

Beyond her career, Nichole was born in Rockford, IL, and moved to Texas as soon as possible, settling in Universal City. She graduated from Samuel Clemens High School in 1998 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Texas State University in 2002. Nichole is happily married to her husband, a firefighter, whom she met during a car accident response in 2003. They have two wonderful children, Timothy and Madison.

On February 4, 2025, Nichole was honored for her 20 years of service during the City Council meeting, where she received the Milestone Service Pin in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the community.

Nichole’s passion for arts and crafts, love for travel, and adventurous spirit shine through in her personal life. She has traveled across the U.S. and Europe, including a memorable trip to Paris, London, and Dublin. Always ready for a new adventure, Nichole even earned her deep-diving certification in Australia.

Her dedication, hard work, and leadership have made a lasting impact on Schertz, and her 20-year milestone is a testament to her commitment to the community.

Schertz Public Library Thrives Thanks to Its Dedicated Volunteers

SINCE 1978, THE SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS BEEN A FIXTURE IN THE COMMUNITY, FOSTERING A LOVE OF READING AND PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND ACTIVITIES FOR RESIDENTS OF ALL AGES.

The library’s strong volunteer base played a critical role in its establishment and continues to contribute to its success. With a variety of opportunities for both teens and adults, the library’s volunteer program is a great way to get involved and support the library.

The history of the library began with a small group of citizens who wanted to establish a library in Schertz. An interest group was formed in late 1977. This group of approximately 15 individuals started a petition and went door to door, collecting more than 1,200 signatures from local residents, then approached City Council with their proposal. The Council established the library as a city department and provided an old building to house it, but all the work required to get the library up and running was done by the volunteer group. After about six months of hard work, the library, entirely staffed by volunteers, officially opened its doors in June 1978.

Like much of the Schertz community, the library has seen significant growth in the nearly 50 years since it’s opening. Today, it employs paid staff

members, but volunteers are still an important part of the library’s operation. In 2024, the library had 81 volunteers who contributed almost 3,500 hours of time, and Library Director, Melissa Uhlhorn credits past and current volunteers with helping to make the Schertz Library the great community resource that it is today. They really are our unsung heroes.

Library volunteers perform tasks such as shelving and emptying book drops, and there is also a local genealogy group that provides volunteer staff for the genealogy room, helping patrons use those resources. But the bulk of the library’s volunteer hours are dedicated to staffing the used book store. Operated by the Library Board, the book store raises funds that are reinvested in library materials and programming. Board members help staff the store, with assistance from other volunteers.

Bob Harry has been a library volunteer for the past 10 years. He started by leading the library’s open mic poetry event and later transitioned to working

in the bookstore and caring for the plants inside the library.

“I like helping people find things of interest to them. I believe strongly in lifelong learning and the library offers a lot for that,” said Harry. “Schertz Public Library is very engaging with a lot to offer. It is exciting to be a part of that.”

The library also has a dedicated teen volunteer program for those ages 13 – 18, and more than a third of the library’s volunteers last year were teens. Most of the teen volunteers serve as helpers with programs for the Youth Services Department, acting as runners, counting patrons, answering questions, shelving books, and helping set up for special events. Unlike adult volunteers, who can often dedicate time each week, the teens typically have to work around school activities

and school sports, so the teen program is run in 3 different time blocks per year. This allows them to choose the time period that works best with their activity schedule.

“Like our adult volunteers, our teens have a variety of reasons for participating,” says Uhlhorn. “Some are interested in pursuing careers in teaching or childcare, so they appreciate the opportunity to help with the children’s programming. We also have a lot of teens that are readers and just love being in the library, so they’re motivated to help for that reason.”

Teen volunteer Allison Wright says that she decided to volunteer because she enjoys being in the library and wanted to have the opportunity to help younger children during craft time. She also assists with shelving books. Says Wright, “I love the library because I can own thousands of books while checking them out one at a time.”

Another participating teen, Carmen Alva, decided to volunteer at the library

because of the positive experience she had visiting the library as a child. She also helps with the children’s programming. Says Alva, “I wanted to volunteer because I know firsthand what it’s like to help a community. What I benefited from this experience is something that shaped me into becoming a leader as well as a thoughtful person.”

The other avenue for volunteering at the library is through the Schertz Library Foundation. Separate from the Library Board, the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves as the fundraising arm of the library. It was founded in 2009 to assist with a capital campaign for the library’s current facility, which opened that same year. The mission of the Library Foundation is to help the library achieve its service goals by providing resources over and above the annual budget. Typically, these funds are used for large scale projects or improvements.

The Library Foundation has 5 volunteer

director positions, four of which also serve as officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). The directors are responsible for raising and managing funds and overseeing any fundraising events, and the goal of the Foundation is to do a project of at least $5000 each year. Some of the most recent projects include upgrading all the online public access catalogs to iPads and providing additional eBooks and eAudio materials. They currently have money set aside to help with a future sound mitigation project in the study rooms.

The Library Foundation is currently recruiting directors and officers, and both the adult and teen volunteer programs accept applications year—round. If you’re looking for a great way to get involved in the community, consider volunteering your time to support the Library.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

Are you 13 years of age or older? Do you want to serve as a member of the library team? Are you interested in performing various duties to enhance library services to the community? Do you want to try something new in an exciting and fun environment? All interested individuals should fill out a volunteer application form and return it to the Schertz Public Library.

Volunteers and Bargain Books: The Story Behind the Read Before Book Store

IF YOU DON’T PAY ATTENTION, YOU MIGHT MISS IT. THERE, TO THE LEFT OF THE SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ENTRANCE, SITS THE READ BEFORE BOOK STORE, A SMALL USED BOOKSTORE WHICH IS THE FUND-RAISING PROJECT OF THE LIBRARY’S ADVISORY BOARD.

Board members and dedicated volunteers have been providing good deals and bargain-priced books, puzzles and games for over 25 years, all to help the library provide resources and programming to the community.

“The library was established by volunteers and their efforts,” explained Schertz Library Director Melissa Uhlhorn. In 1977, the nearest libraries were in Seguin or San Antonio, so a group of about 15 local citizens began a successful petition drive to create a homegrown library.

Convinced of community support, the City Council approved of the idea and even provided a municipal building.

The first Schertz city library opened in June 1978, but funding was tight, just a few thousand dollars. So, the volunteers, several of whom were now library board members, began to figure out not only how to create and run a library, but how to fund it, said Uhlhorn.

Those volunteers and their efforts paid for everything in the beginning, including a new building when the library outgrew its original space.

Eventually, the city assumed all fiscal responsibility for operations and the Board and volunteers shifted their focus to supplemental funding.

“They did all kinds of projects to raise money, but in the end, what they settled on were annual book sales and, eventually, a used bookstore,” she added. “I’ve been here 23 years, and

we had space in the old library that was dedicated to that and, when we moved into our current building in 2009, we specifically designed space for a used bookstore with a workroom for the Library Board and volunteers.”

The Read Before Book Store, headed the last three years by manager Beverly Clarke, is completely operated by a

group of 20 to 30 volunteers who accept donations, clean and categorize them, price them and place them in the store at no cost to the Schertz Library or the city.

All proceeds from sales go to the library, Uhlhorn said, and in 2024, some 31 volunteers contributed 2,544 hours to the bookstore and generated more than $21,000. That money was dedicated to specialty programs such as the Austin Reptile Show, as well as dedicated events like the Extreme Book Nerd Challenge, now underway, and summer and winter reading programs.

The library’s annual budget is $1.4 million, Uhlhorn explained, but most of that money goes to personnel. “Our actual operating budget that we use not only for those special programs but also for supplies, was $19,500 last year,” she said. “The line item that

covers those kinds of things is actually less money than what the bookstore makes and gives to us for programming.”

Lizzi Bertoia, Adult Services Librarian, noted that the Read Before Bookstore gives a lot of added value. “We like to do things big and elaborate with our programs,” she said. “Without the bookstore, we could do some of that, but not to the extent we have been able to. Without the money they provide us, we could not have programming with unique special experiences. The scale of what we do is moved to the next level because of them.”

bookstore itself—say they love what they do. “I always feel welcomed,” said Dolores Hobbs. “I know I contribute to something important.”

In turn, the volunteers themselves— mostly long-term supporters of the library and long-time customers of the

Work Zone Safety Week 2025: Respect the Zone, So We All Get Home

As road construction projects continue across Schertz, it's important to prioritize the safety of both our workers and drivers. April 21-25, 2025, marks National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), and this year’s theme is “Respect the zone so we all get home.” With numerous ongoing projects, including road resurfacing and sidewalk repairs, ensuring the safety of our city staff and contractors is more critical than ever.

Here are a few key tips to keep in mind while driving through work zones:

■ Slow Down: Speeding is a leading cause of accidents in work zones. Please follow posted speed limits to protect workers and yourself.

■ Stay Alert: Keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions such as mobile phones. Work zones often require sudden stops or lane changes.

■ Give Space: Allow plenty of room between your vehicle and construction workers or equipment.

Let’s all do our part by respecting the zone, so everyone gets home safely. Your patience and caution can make a big difference in keeping Schertz moving forward safely!

Schertz Cibolo Cemetery Receives Landmark Status

The City of Schertz officially recognized the local Schertz-Cibolo Cemetery to receive Historic Landmark status on the recommendation of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee City council made this acknowledgement during its regular meeting on December 3, 2024.On hand to receive this honor was Dr. Miguel Vazquez, president of the cemetery association, as well as volunteers of the association This achievement compliments the Texas Historical Marker and Guadalupe County historical marker previously awarded

The origin of the cemetery dates back to the same era when the town of Cut-Off became the city of Schertz A few decades earlier, the Southern Pacific Railroad had been built connecting San Antonio with Galveston, including stops in the farming communities of Converse, Schertz, Cibolo and Marion along the way Cotton was the important cargo of the time Farm workers, who planted and harvested the cotton, also had just arrived to the Cibolo Valley, fleeing the conflicts of the Mexican Revolution. Ferdinand and Elizabeth Stapper Dietz’ farmstead was situated where the Lone Oak subdivision is now located. It is here, that Mr Dietz marked off one acre of land where the farm worker families could bury their loved ones, and the origin of the cemetery began The majestic oaks, beneath which the workers would eat lunch and take their breaks are still here, and fittingly, the farm workers remain in eternal rest under these same oaks.

The Association is dedicated to preserving local history and creating an educational venue for the public. The public is invited to tour the burial ground and visit the recently created Children’s Memorial The Schertz-Cibolo cemetery is an active cemetery, and you may find additional information at our website:sccemetery com
