The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board exists to advise and make recommendations to the City Council concerning policy matters related to the establishment, maintenance, and operation of the City’s parks and recreation programs. The Board meets on the fourth Monday of every month at Council Chambers Conference Room, located at 1400 Schertz Parkway.

Get your little ones outdoors to discover the exciting nature right in our own backyard. Kids are encouraged to explore, discover, and ask questions to help grow their knowledge of nature. This FREE program is designed for families with elementary-aged children, but older and younger siblings are also welcome. Texas Master Naturalist volunteers will lead the themed programs.

DARK SKIES AND FIREFLIES

Local Firefly Expert and founder of Firefly Conservation & Research, Ben Pfeiffer, is partnering with Schertz Parks and Recreation for the fourth year to provide a great fun and educational program for all ages. This program will offer firefly education, and a chance to explore and how to carefully catch local fireflies. So don’t forget to bring a chair and a butterfly net.

ED-ZOO-CATION IN THE PARK

San Antonio Zoo Center for Conservation and Research has selected Crescent Bend Nature Park as a harvesting location to help feed their Texas Horned Lizards. Learn about the Texas Horned Lizards, harvester ants, the history of the animals, and their importance. If this program is not already cool enough, there is also an opportunity for appearances of live animals/lizards from the zoo!

For all the night owls trying to beat the Texas heat, come take a nighttime stroll with our Guadalupe Master Naturalists and see which animals come out at night. Inspired by the interests and observations of those who attend, the naturalists will expand one's knowledge on all types of nature from soil, plants, insects, mammals and birds, talking about their dependence, interaction and place in preserving the nature around us.

Join us at Crescent Bend Nature Park for an evening under the stars, hosted in conjunction with the San Antonio Astronomical Association. Members of SAAA will provide telescopes for viewing the constellations, stars, and wonder of the night sky. Chairs and blankets welcome.

Welcome to the Great Outdoors Summer Camp, where adventure, discovery, and fun come together in a beautiful outdoor nature park! Amtgard is a free to play Live Action Roleplay boffer combat game that features magic, monsters, and themed games. Imagine if your D&D game was able to be brought off the page. Amtgard Monster’s Vale hosts the local chapter every Saturday to partake in themed battle games, classes ranging from cooking to weapon construction, and socialization with like minded fantasy enthusiasts. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

4TH OF JULY JUBILEE

All Ages | Jul 4 | FREE | Pickrell Park Schertz is proud to host one of South Texas’ largest tributes to freedom and independence. Join us for the 49th Annual 4th of July Jubilee Celebration. Start the day at 9:15 a.m. with the ‘Let Freedom Run’ 5K, followed by the downtown parade. LARP isn’t just combat; LARP is the art of fantasy. Join us at Monster’s Vale for a day of education in the arts. There will be classes that focus on cooking to leather to sewing. All classes will be arranged in a station format for you to be able to finish one class and move onto the next in the schedule. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

This fun and creative class is perfect for Swifties of all ages who want to add a little extra magic to their cookie-decorating skills. No previous decorating experience required—just bring your love for Taylor and get ready to create!

AUGUST 21: GROOVY CLASS

Get ready to decorate, groove, and spread good vibes at our Groovy Cookie Decorating Class! Inspired by the funky styles of the ‘60s and ‘70s, this class will teach you how to decorate cookies with far-out designs like peace signs, swirls, flower power patterns, and more!

SOFTBALL LEAGUE

Get your bats ready because community softball is back again! Grab your team and come out to play in our Adult Softball Social League. Teams must be co-ed, 18 years of age and over, with at least 10 players, but no more than 15. This is a recreational league and requires NO EXPERIENCE. Just FUN! There will be 5 guaranteed Wednesday night games throughout the season followed by a 2-week championship tournament for all teams to find the ultimate champion.

PICKLEBALL OPEN PLAY

Pickleball is fun for players of all ages and skill levels. The sport incorporates elements of badminton, tennis, and ping pong. Pickleball free open play will be hosted on Tuesdays in July for Parks & Rec Month, excluding July 1. Nets, paddles, and pickleballs will be provided.

Young athletes will learn the fundamentals of one of the fastest-growing sports in the world! The sport incorporates elements of badminton, tennis, and ping pong. Participants will engage in skillbuilding drills, friendly competitions, and teamwork activities, all designed to instill a love for the game and foster a sense of sportsmanship.

This fun, skill-intensive program is designed for beginner to intermediate players. Using our progression-based curriculum, we focus on the whole player—teaching sportsmanship and teamwork. Boys and girls will learn the fundamentals of passing, shooting, ball handling, rebounding and defense through skill-based instruction and small-sided scrimmages. Please bring a swimsuit, towel, and a lunch for your participant to eat before jumping into the pool for the second half of the day! Monday will be a fun splash day with water games, as the pool is closed on that day. Participants must already know how to swim.

Athletes will learn the fundamentals of stick handling, cradling, passing, and shooting in a fun, non-checking environment. All equipment is provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own lacrosse stick. Participants are not required to wear goggles, a helmet, or gloves due to the use of soft lacrosse balls and our staff ensuring non-checking, non-contact play.

Multi-Sport programs are designed to introduce young athletes to a variety of different sports in one setting. Athletes will learn the rules and essential skills of each sport, along with vital life lessons such as sportsmanship, inclusion and teamwork. Experience the excitement of football with Skyhawks Flag Football Fueled by USA Football. Using a curriculum developed by the experts from USA Football, coaches will teach skills like passing, receiving, kicking and flag pulling. Skyhawks cheerleading teaches young athletes all the essential skills to lead the crowd and support the home team. Skyhawks' cheer camp will ensure that each camper will learn cheers, proper hand and body movements as well as jumping techniques. There is no stunting, just a big focus on fun while each cheerleader learns important life skills such as teambuilding and leadership. The week concludes with a choreographed performance and a chance to cheer at a Skyhawks football game!

The BVYA Schertz Stingrays team is part of the Maverick Summer Swim League. It is for swimmers under the age of 18. We have four dual meets, a league championship meets, and qualifiers finish the season at the Maverick All Stars meet. This is a great gateway into competitive swimming. Come join us at Pickrell Park for a summer of great memories!

CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA

Ahoy, captains! Get ready to design, build, and race in the ultimate test of creativity and engineering at our Cardboard Boat Regatta! Using only cardboard, tape, and ingenuity, teams will construct their own boats and put them to the test in a thrilling race across the water. Will your boat sink or sail? There’s only one way to find out!

AQUATIC SUPERVISION & SWIM TEST POLICY

A Family Who Swims Together, Stays Together

Adult supervision of children is important as it allows our lifeguards and aquatic safety staff to focus on the water and keeping everyone safe. All youth ages 16 and under must complete a new swim test each visit prior to entering the water. Each youth will receive a wristband that will allow him or her access to certain areas of the pool.

• Children 6 & under must be within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian at all times

• Children 7 – 16 are required to take a swim test once a year

• Children 14 & up are allowed access to the pools without a guardian

• Any children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older

• All large group use of the splash pad must be scheduled in advance by calling (210) 619-1850.

• Wendy Swan Memorial Park Pavilions are available to rent online at Schertz.com/CivicRec.

LIBRARY MINI GOLF

The Schertz Public Library will be transformed into a mini golf course on Saturday, July 26. The public is invited to drop by to play a round of golf anytime between 10 a.m.4 p.m. The course, which will be set up by a professional mini golf company and library volunteers, will wind through the stacks of the library. We hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to see the library in a new way as they play the course and help us celebrate a successful Summer Reading Experience. This fun, free event is open to the public.

SUMMER READING EXPERIENCE 2025

We invite you to embark on a journey of art and creativity, celebrating the myriad ways in which art enriches our lives. For 2025, the theme of the Summer Reading Program is Color Our World designed to inspire and engage readers of all ages through a diverse array of artistic expression. “Color Our World,” encourages libraries to embrace the beauty of art in all its forms, creating a colorful tapestry of experiences for everyone. Registration for the program will open on Saturday, May 31 and the program will conclude on Saturday, August 2. Participants can read and create to earn a prize!

In correlation with the theme, the Schertz Public Library will be offering several exciting programs encouraging originality and imagination. A few special events and programs are highlighted in the Fun Guide which includes the Magik on the Road Tour, our very own Art Heist Escape Room, and a series of creative wellness workshops for adults. Summer Reading will wrap up with a complete 18hole mini golf course inside the library on Saturday July 26 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In addition to unique summer programming, the library will maintain a regular weekly schedule of programs for all ages. Some of the youth programs include Baby & Me, Toddler, and Preschool Storytimes, Teen Tuesdays, InBetween, Discovery, Sensory Play Group, and Crafternoon. Also, be sure to check out the adult programming schedule that includes Sunday Afternoon Meditation, Writing Workshops, Tech Help classes, and several crafting programs. We look forward to seeing you at the library this summer!

SUMMER SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

MAGIK ON THE ROAD

Magik on the Road Tours is coming to the Schertz Public Library this summer! Join us on June 6 for a special presentation of Tomás and the Library Lady. Based on the inspiring true story of Tomás Rivera and the beloved book by Pat Mora, Tomás and the Library Lady celebrates the magic of stories, reading, and imagination. Tomás, a young boy from Crystal City, Texas, and the son of migrant farm workers, meets a kind librarian who introduces him to the transformative power of books. This story follows Tomás Rivera, who went on to become the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system. This bilingual performance, perfect for both English and Spanish speakers, will be held on Friday, June 6, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Space is limited, so be sure to arrive early to secure your spot!

ART HEIST ESCAPE ROOM

This June, test your skills in a thrilling art heist escape room at the Pecan Grove Art Gallery—inside the library! You and your team must break in, solve puzzles, and retrieve a priceless masterpiece before the clock runs out. Can you crack the code and save the artwork? This high-stakes mission is available for two weeks in June. Book your spot for a 30-minute adventure that’s sure to keep you on your toes! Recommended for teams of 4-6 people, ages 8 to adult. Available during the first two weeks of June—space is limited, registration begins June 1.

COLOR OUR WORLD: CREATIVE WELLNESS SERIES

Explore global creativity through art and color! This hands-on series takes you on a journey across cultures, blending painting, music, and mindful creativity. From Mediterranean landscapes to Polynesian-inspired instruments, each session offers a unique art experience to spark inspiration and joy. This series is designed for adults and will consist of four separate creative wellness classes, two in June and two in July. Please check the online calendar for the date, time, and details.

FAMILY MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

During our time, participants will explore a variety of musical instruments, dance with colorful scarves, and enjoy opportunities to move their bodies in fun and creative ways. Beyond just a musical experience, this class nurtures the development of social, emotional, physical, and language skills in your child. Come join us for a harmonious blend of learning and laughter through the magic of music on Saturday, June 28 at 10:15 a.m. in the Library Program Room. This program is designed for children birth to 7 years old and their accompanying adult.
