          SUMMER CHALLENGE: FIND YOUR VOICE
Summer is almost here, which means warm days, ice cream at the beach and Summer Challenge!

Every summer, we host a Summer Challenge to encourage our community to read, learn and challenge themselves. This year, the Challenge runs June 1 – Aug. 1, and the theme is “Find Your Voice.”
For teens, we ask that you track each day you read (up to 35 days). Reading counts if it’s 5 minutes or if it’s 105 minutes. And all reading counts – print books, ebooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, webcomics, scholarly articles, you name it!
          TEEN PRIZES:
          • FREE BOOK for registering

    • BONUS TREAT at 15 days of reading
          • ENTRY INTO GIFT CARD DRAWING for every 5 days of reading
Interested in registering? We’ll be visiting your high schools at the beginning of May. You can also stop into the Library or visit SchaumburgLibrary.org/read on or after June 1 to register! Happy reading!

            TEEN MENTORS: TEACHING TECH
Thanks to a unique grant-based internship, we have five teen interns from D211 schools: MakerSpace Mentors Anmay, Nicolas and Andrew; and Teen Place Mentors Trisha and Aishani.

What do teen mentors do? Hear it straight from them:
          • “We ensure all teens feel comfortable expressing themselves in a classroom setting.” – Aishani
          • “We help teens find passion and enjoyment in creating new programs.” – Trisha
          • “We teach teens various applied tech skills.” – Andrew
          • “Prepare youth for the rapidly growing environment relative to 3D printers, laser cutting and circuitry.” - Nicolas.
Though the mentors work primarily with teens, they do get to interact with patrons of all ages. “We run outreach events, which means we teach 3D printing to everyone from first graders seeing a 3D printer for the first time to retired engineers from Motorola who helped invent the cell phone. The people we meet are truly what make the sessions special to run, and it’s beautiful to see how technology can unify those from different backgrounds,” said Anmay.
Our mentors hope to continue their work in tech even after their internships:
          • Aishani plans to attend college for computer science to enhance her programming skills.
          • Andrew looks forward to continuing to create with 3D modeling and printing.
          • Anmay plans to attend college for computer science and program new developments for 3D printing technology.
          • Nicolas wants to become someone who develops new technology, especially MakerSpace tools.
          • Trisha will continue coding through the Schaumburg Library Hackathon in June.
