Letter from the Executive Director

I believe that libraries are, at their heart, places of possibility.

This past year has shown us how deeply our Schaumburg Township District Library community values learning, connection, and access. But, even more importantly, it reminded us that our work here is never finished.

In an evolving world, we too must evolve. Guided by our strategic plan, we remain laser-focused on preparing your Library for the future while meeting today’s needs. This includes expanding access to technology and resources, designing programs that reflect our community’s diversity, and ensuring that everyone feels welcome and empowered here. This vision came to life in tangible ways last year, including a successful second-floor renovation at our Central location that added more welcoming spaces and new services, along with an accessibility ramp connecting our space to the lively Town Square. We also maintained fiscal responsibility to ensure every dollar we steward serves our diverse community, even as we plan for future capital needs.

To help sustain and grow this important work, we are thrilled to introduce the Schaumburg Township Library Foundation, our newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Foundation will enable us to partner more closely with individuals, businesses, and organizations that believe in the transformative power of libraries. The Foundation will directly support innovative programs, expanded resources, and help us tell our story even more effectively.

None of this would be possible without our extraordinary staff. Their creativity and openness toward the journey ahead make our Library not just a place of service but a place of inspiration. It is their daily commitment that turns vision into reality, and I am deeply grateful for their dedication.

I also want to acknowledge our Board of Trustees, elected by our community to guide this institution with wisdom and care. Their leadership, together with our strategic plan, ensures we remain both grounded in our mission and responsive to the needs of those we serve.

The story of any library is always evolving, and the most exciting chapters are still ahead for all of us. With our staff’s dedication, board leadership, and the community’s trust, we are prepared to move forward with purpose and hope.

Volunteer – We Need YOU

Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back? Volunteers play a vital role in the success of the Library and the community we serve. Whether you’re seeking a short-term or ongoing opportunity, we offer several ways for individuals, families, groups, and businesses to get involved. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to share their time and talents.

About The Briar Club

The Briar Club by New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn takes readers to Washington, D.C., in the 1950s, where secrets lurk behind every door. At Briarwood House, a boarding home for women, a vibrant mix of residents—each chasing dreams or hiding pasts—form an unlikely community. When tensions rise and loyalties are tested, the women discover that friendship and resilience can be just as powerful as the dangers closing in around them. With her signature blend of suspense, richly drawn characters, and historical detail, Quinn delivers a page-turning story of courage, connection, and the mysteries that bind us together.

EXHIBIT

The Cold War Exhibit

January 5 through February 15 • Central Library

All Ages

On loan from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, this exhibit showcases the Cold War as a global power struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union: capitalism versus communism, freedom versus control. Rather than fighting directly, the two nations waged their battle through propaganda, espionage, nuclear buildup, and proxy wars that divided the world for decades. This tense and secretive environment forms the backdrop of Kate Quinn’s The Briar Club.

Discover all the programs and booklists staff have gathered to enrich your One Book, One Community experience. Look for the OB/OC in this Program Guide.

NAME THE MATERIALS SORTER!

Have you ever named your car, house, or a favorite tool? Do you remember WALL•E, the movie about a robot responsible for cleaning up waste on the Earth? Our Materials Sorter machine is having an identity crisis and needs a name! This November, we’re giving our patrons the chance to name this book-sorting “automaton” at the Central Library.

For months, staff have noticed the smiles and happiness on patrons’ faces as they drop off their returns and watch them being sent to the correct bin for sorting. We’d like to give our machine a name that accurately reflects this fun and techy library tool.

We need your suggestions. Then, our staff will select their favorites from the submissions, and you vote on them.

• Submit Your Name Ideas: Dec. 1–10

• Then VOTE for your favorite: Dec. 11–22

• The WINNER is announced in January!
