FILWOOD FIT FOR THE FINALS

A lot of work has been going on at Mendip Broadwalk, to ensure they are ready for the step up to Step 6, should they finish high enough in the league.

With the deadline of 31st March for all ground improvements, the team have been busy getting everything in place to ensure the ground in general is fit for the next stage of Mendip’s grand plans.

Ticket box and turnstile area are being fenced in, and astroturf and a dugout revamp is underway for the technical areas.

Avon Youth League Finals

Mendip Broadwalk have been awarded five Avon Youth League Finals; a testament to the hard work that the club and grounds staff have put in throughout the seasoncongratulations from all at the SCFL

REFEREE MARKS - A GUIDE

Why they matter

Marks given by clubs give me a rough guide on the performance of our match officials. There are many factors that I take into account when appointing referees to games, which include, but are not limited to: club marks, availability, location, CPD, admin, Match Day Coach/Observer feedback, feedback from SCFL Board members who watch games and many more.

Referee Awards are new to this season, with cash prizes and awards for the top officials.

61 marks

Scores of 61 aren’t much use to us, and we see them all too often, with currently XX marks of 61 at the time of writing. 60 or lower means a report is needed, and I can assure you all reports are read with great interest by myself, and passed on to the match official if deemed necessary. Some clubs have taken the time to email me separately with a longer, more detailed report, which is fantastic. I reply to all of them, ensuring there is a healthy dialogue between myself and the clubs. Although the game has finished and the result can’t be changed, these reports really do help shape the future of refereeing on the SCFL, so for those that send reports in, please continue! Those that don’t send reports in, or mark referees 61, please reconsider, as it will help you in the long run.

100 marks

As with 61 marks, I believe 100 marks, in most cases, are a little lazy too. If you are marking referees 100 every week it skews the stats, and gives us a false picture of our officials If they have been brilliant, barely getting any (of the circa 250) decisions incorrect, feel free to mark them accordingly.

Submission

Please submit marks in the timeframe laid out in the rules - I feedback weekly to referees so they can reflect on how they are perceived to have been scored.

Thank you - by submitting accurate marks, you are helping to shape the future of our games, making it more enjoyable for all. Please get in touch if you need any guidance.

CHILI TOP OF THE (RESPECT) LEAGUE

We chat to Tim Curtis, manager of Chilcompton Sports, about why Chili are top of the Respect charts.

You are currently top of the respect charts for Player’s attitude, Technical Area attitude & Captain’s attitude, why do you think this is?

Good behaviour and conduct are demonstrated and influenced by the management team. We feel it is important and we have conversations about it, as and when appropriate, as a squad.

You’re also second place in the Assistant Referee table for the Prem, who is your club Lino, how does he help, why/when did he get involved?

Jamie Duncan and Paul Gay are our two assistant referees. They have been part of the set up for the past 10 years or so. They fully understand and are embedded into the culture of the club.

Your captain has got consistently good marks from the match officials, and is clearly a leader in the field. Do you believe his leadership has been vital in Chili being in the position you’re in now?

Ryan Gay is good leader on the pitch, at training and generally around the squad He is the conduit between the management and the players and reinforces the expectation and standards that have been set. He has come through our youth set up, like many of the players, so understands the clu

What does the Respect table mean for you and your club?

We have demonstrated that we show respect even without an incentive. Respect is not only important in sport but life in general. Grass roots football is gradually dying and a lack of respect is one of the underlying strands. Sport is for everybody’s enjoyment: whether player, referee or coach. Football has to wake up and smell the coffee before it is too late

REFEREE SPOTLIGHT

We chat to James Salt, Level 6 Junior County Referee from Bridgwater about his Journey so far.

When did you take up refereeing, and why?

I started refereeing in February last year. I was playing in my local Taunton & District League but stopped playing when training for the London Marathon. I then decided to take up refereeing. I always had an interest in becoming a qualified football referee but never went through with it; I thought this was the perfect time too, so I did the course and the rest is history.

It's your first season in the SCFL, how are you finding it?

I love it. It’s good to be visiting new grounds and refereeing players I never played against The standard is good and every game is competitive keeping me on top of my game and performance.

You are part of FA CORE (FA Centre of Refereeing Excellence); what does that entail, and how do they help you on your journey?

The FA CORE is a select group of referees throughout the country who have been identified as having potential. We had a pre season camp up in Warwick where we covered LOTG, dissent, analysing match clips and undertook a lot of fitness based stuff out on the field and in the gym. We then have 4 quarterly meetings over the season, more localised into our regions (South West) where we meet up and go over the same areas. We are approaching our final meeting of the season where we have a LOTG exam and a Fitness Test to complete. Part of being included in the FA CORE means you get a referee coach assigned to you. My coach Stacey Pearson (Current FIFA and WSL referee) will come and watch me at some of my games throughout the season and provide me feedback and coaching points. Stacey will identify my strengths and my areas for improvement, and is there to help me become the best possible referee I can be.

What has been the most enjoyable or challenging game you have had so far in the SCFL?

Watchet Vs Minehead, 2 days before Christmas. Crowd of 350/400. Great atmosphere and a good game to be a part of.

Do you officiate in any other leagues apart from the SCFL?

I operate on the Taunton & District League & Western Counties Floodlit League in the middle and on the Toolstation Western League on the line.

PAGE NINE | SALT OF THE EARTH

REFEREE SPOTLIGHT

What's the biggest game you have been involved in (SCFL or otherwise) so far?

The biggest games I have been involved in so far are probably the two lines I’ve done at Bridgwater. Bridgwater Vs Clevedon, and Bridgwater Vs Helston. Two games where Bridgwater were taking on the current leaders of the league at the time whilst sitting just below them in the table.

What are your aspirations as a referee?

Simply to make it to the top.
