ell what can I say about this edition of the Scene – we’ve gone ‘let’s go out’ crazy! With Easter coming early and summer around the corner, we wanted to showcase some of the best places to head to for fun, enjoyment and even education. Our 28-page feature provides you with ideas of what to do and where to go. Keep this issue safe and refer to the pages for inspiration and for special occasions, you could even let the children decide! As well as this feature, we have our firm favourite articles too such as our history pages, home ideas, family and finance and of course, recipes, nutrition, food reviews, beauty, health and fitness. Don’t forget Mothers Day on 11th March – see our gift guide on page 22 and book a foodie treat for her from the selection of restaurants featured. Then of course there’s Easter on 1st April. Take your pick of delicious Easter treats on page 24. Next month we are turning our attention to pet lovers! We will be featuring pet advice from experienced vets, showcasing the best places to buy your pet food with guidance as to what to feed your pets and introducing you to other pet lovers that will take care of your furry friends whilst you are away. We will also be running a competition on Facebook where you can upload your cute pet photo’s – we can’t wait to see them all!

Sad to see my favourite bar in Stamford close, I’m now delighted to see that what was The Single Cask will be re-opening as The Copper Room. New owners, Liam and Robert will be serving a selection of craft and bottled beers, artisan spirits, wines and a few cheeky cocktails. The Copper Room will be open during the day too, serving coffee, cheeseboards and light bites. We’re looking forward to opening night!

Coming to the city in August, the festival promises to be a fun, engaging, informative (and most likely intoxicating!) weekend for gin and rum lovers, showcasing a staggering array of spirits from all over the world, including many produced here in the UK. Luckily, a team of gin and rum aficionados will be on hand to guide you through your tasting, with talks and masterclasses from the best gin and rum producers. There will also be live entertainment and tasty street food. The event is to be held on the 24/25th Aug - book your tickets early as this event is set to be very popular!

ollowing on from last month’s article on how to boost your mental health with food, we are continuing to keep the focus on the brain and this month, are looking at how to prevent cognitive decline - that’s brain health to you and I! Whilst the benefits of an active lifestyle are widely known to boost our mood, reduce our risk of chronic ill health, help with weight maintenance etc, according to the latest research, exercise also boosts cognitive functioning. Regular physical activity is thought to increase our brain cells ability to recover from injury and promote the growth of new cells, both of which help improve memory. At the opposite end of the spectrum is a sedentary lifestyle which is associated with a higher risk of brain ageing and dementia. You don’t need to sign up to the gym to get these benefits, but simple leisure activities such as gardening and walking reduce the risk of brain ageing, the key being regularity NOT intensity. In addition to exercise there are other factors that have been shown to help preserve your brain function:

Registered dietician Victoria Francis talks about how to keep your brain awake!

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

Evidence suggests engaging in social activities and having social connections are linked to increased longevity and may support brain health. Nurture those relationships with the ones you love and you stand a better chance of being around longer to enjoy the benefits. Want to reconnect socially? Join a book club or walking group, consider volunteering or simply invite your friends round for coffee more often.

Simple leisure activities reduce the risk of brain ageing

CHALLENGE YOUR BRAIN

Keeping your brain intellectually challenged or stimulated is believed to significantly reduce your risk of dementia. Don’t wait until you are older to learn a new skill, start now and get those brain cells firing. Your brain health will thank you later! Read more books, learn a new skill, do the weekend crosswords or complete a puzzle. GET SOME ZZZSS

We all know the feeling when we are sleep deprived and not functioning at full capacity. Not getting enough sleep might be linked to memory problems. Do you have a good bedtime routine? Establish some helpful sleep hygiene practices such as having a bath before bed.

Victoria Francis is a registered dietician who is ready to help you boost your nutritionand well-being through food and lifestyle change. Call 07881 805770 for a FREE 10-minute consultation.

SPICE UP YOUR

Why not treat your mum this Mother’s Day?

I

don’t mean with flowers and chocolates (which by the way, us mums love!), I mean treating her to a day of relaxing whilst you make the Sunday dinner. We all love a Sunday roast, so why not spice it up a little with my recipe for tasty, tender tandoori chicken. This is such an easy recipe, with very little actual cooking. Just marinate the chicken and pop in the oven. I love Mothers Day, as my three children usually make a real effort to treat me to gifts and give me cards to tell me how amazing I am!! It’s always nice to be appreciated, so whether you are a mother, step-mother, mother-in-law or grandmother, Happy Mother’s Day to you all.

PARVEEN'S TOP TIP

Tandoori Chicken PREP TIME: 10 mins COOKING TIME: 40 mins INGREDIENTS ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

6 Chicken drumsticks (no skin) 6 Chicken thighs (no skin) 1 tbsp plain yoghurt 1 tsp of chilli powder 1 tsp of tandoori powder 1/2 tsp chilli flakes (optional) 1 tsp salt 2 tsp lemon juice 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Try adding potatoes to the recipe. Add 12 new potatoes, cut into halves at stage 2 of the recipe. They taste fabulous because as they cook, they take on all the flavour of the chicken.

METHOD

1

Carefully score the fleshiest part of the chicken, this allows all the lovely spices to be absorbed into the chicken. In a large bowl, add the yoghurt, salt, lemon juice, spices, oil and mix together. Now add chicken pieces and coat thoroughly. Leave to marinate at room temperature for 10 mins. Place the chicken in a baking tray and cover with aluminium foil. Cook in a hot oven at 200°C for 30 minutes.

2

3 4

5

Now take the foil off and you will notice all the juices from the chicken has created a spicy stock. Do not drain this, as you will need this liquid to baste the chicken pieces. Continue to cook the chicken, for a further 10 to 15 minutes, keep turning and basting the chicken in its own juices until tender. The liquid will reduce and the chicken will be slightly crispy.

Bringing an historical culture of food to Peterborough

WORDS: JOSH BAKER

F

or a city that has had a slew of new restaurants opening in its centre you could argue that the residents of Peterborough are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing an eatery. So excuse me for throwing another one into the mix, Samba Brazil. Samba Brazil is definitely a different experience offering a Rodizio menu featuring a rotation of different types and cuts of meat while an all you can eat buffet provides you with all side dishes and accompaniments you need. The usual experience of ‘all you can eat’ is a disappointing affair with predictable dishes, some that have been left out for hours until it has become unappealing and past its best. Rodizio however, is the polar opposite. All meats are cooked fresh and brought to your table within seconds of leaving the grill. The proof is in the eating! I will admit being a little put off by the location of Samba Brazil. A little further from Peterborough’s

main stretch, the restaurant seemed a little garish at first, however, all qualms dispelled upon first tasting the food. It would be impractical to provide you with a description of every course that was served to us (there can be up to 15 courses!), but my highlights would have to be the juicy rump steak served to us first that set the tone for an evening of succulence, the pork belly curry from the buffet that melts in your mouth, and, available on Wednesday’s ‘Exotic night’, the kangaroo steak which, while I was at first sceptical, was incredibly flavoursome. Samba Brazil also offers private hire of their upstairs and downstairs restaurants at competitive rates and kids under 8 eat free with a paying adult. In summary, I’d recommend Samba Brazil, especially for groups as the style of food and the building lends itself to a big group who can bring some energy and transform Samba Brazil into Rio!

THINK

This month we continue to take a look behind the scenes of a 1:1 session at Hummingbird Hypnotherapy.

WORDS: NICOLE WOODCOCK

S

olution focused hypnotherapy is a positive practice whereby the client is asked to find and focus on the positives in life. This can be difficult, particularly if a client is struggling with low mood or anxiety. The science behind this method is that focusing and seeing good things, no matter how small, begins to boost the brain’s serotonin levels and give the body a lift, creating new neural pathways so we begin to steer more towards the positives rather than the negatives. From the first session onward, the focus is on what’s been good over the last week and how you react to situations differently. Clients also notice that they are beginning to sleep a lot better and not dwell in that negative space as long. The client is then asked what they can do differently over the next week to continue to feel better and reduce anxieties.

These are small steps. Even finding time to meet up with a friend, knowing and understanding that social interaction and positive contribution will give you a lift and create positive connect to boost those much-needed brain chemicals to keep you in a positive place. This session is concluded with going into a trance, an experience likened to daydreaming or feeling like you are going to sleep. Clients feel relaxed and calm but have complete control to open their eyes when and if they need to. If you would like to see if hypnotherapy can benefit you, please contact Nicole at Hummingbird Hypnotherapy to book a free consultation or pop along to the next Bourne Wellbeing Day at Wake House on 10th March, from 10am until 4pm. M OV E AWAY FROM THE

WORDS: FIONA McCARTHY

ollowing on from last month’s advice on breaking sugar addiction, this month, I’d like to talk dairy. Why dairy you may be asking? Isn’t milk good for you? To see the effect milk has on you, take a few minutes to view this link: https://iwastesomuchtime.com/69893

Now, you may be asking, can I replace milk with, soy? Be careful, soy also has a story of its own. https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/1822466 Why I am sharing this with you is simple. I am passionate about giving people an insight into the effects of food and how that impacts your body and your health, by taking a look at how your body functions and what we can do to better our health. As always, our focus is on prevention, rather than cure. Often what happens is that we wait for the body to fall apart and then we deal with it, usually by masking the problem and taking short cut, instant results. Imagine you had a bath

18

18 Arbonne.indd 18

The second of a series of features looking at how to improve your health through your diet.

Our focus is on prevention, rather than cure full of water and the water starts to flow over. Instead of frantically mopping up the excess water with a mop, how about you turn off the taps and pull out the plug. It’s about looking at things before they go wrong, and in this instance, the steps you can take to start to keep your body in a healthy, happy state. You may feel that you do have enough energy and you feel good about yourself, even though you have no idea what is going on inside. It may not present itself to you right now, but you need to think long term. If you would like to do your own body PH test at home - these strips from Amazon, are a cost-effective way to record your results. Enjoy being more actively conscious about what food group’s serve you and which ones to eliminate. I wish you luck.

Strong and Soft Massage with Marlene fter a very busy week, I was lucky to be asked to do a review at Strong and Soft, a home-based massage studio in Peterborough with a lady called Marlene Paulo, who, originally from Brazil, has been living in the UK for 11 years now. Of course, I couldn’t say no! Marlene is a qualified masseuse, but her talents do not end there. She is also a qualified technical nurse, a personal trainer and an acupuncturist. The room in Marlene’s house was welcoming, with spa music playing and the smell of essential oils hitting you as you walk in. I opted for the head and shoulder massage, and I must say it wasn’t like the normal Indian head massage I have reviewed before. This was more intense, working on the pressure points on the head and face which I could actually feel working. The shoulder massage was penetrating and helped to

release those knots that seem to collect in the neck and shoulders. Other treatments available include deep tissue massage, lean fat drainage massage, fat tissue massage, back massages, Reiki, facial acupuncture and ear acupuncture. I left feeling reinvigorated and ready to take on the busy weekend. Definitely worth a visit and I am sure the other treatments Marlene provides are just as good. I will be returning for a back massage!

I left feeling revigorated.

Dave Austin at DSA Fitness is here to help you achieve your fitness goals

W

ith spring upon us, I am sure that like me, you are already starting to look forward to longer days, warmer weather and summer. Perhaps you can resonate with the feelings of the run up to summer 2017, dreading getting the bathing suit out for your holiday or dusting off an evening dress or tuxedo for a summer ball knowing that it will be a tight squeeze! Fast forward to 2018. You don’t want those feelings again! Being happy with your body doesn’t start in summer, it starts NOW. Here’s what you can do:

1

SET YOUR GOAL I always harp on about this as it is the first and most important step. Where do you want to be? Have you got a goal weight, goal waist size? Write it down and keep it prominent. HOW WILL YOU FEEL WHEN YOU GET THERE? Happy, confident, proud, less self-conscious? Write this down. You need to revert back to this when life gets in the way (which it will at times) as this will help you stay focused and on track. NUTRITION I’m not talking about the latest fad diet, I’m talking about healthy eating which is sustainable long term - a way of life. Refer back to my article in last month’s magazine for plenty of tips.

4

EXERCISE Start moving more and find something you enjoy. If you hate running, don’t go running! Try walking, cycling or swimming. Perhaps do some weight training, either at home or at a gym. A mix of weight training and cardio exercise is a good balance. 30-minute sessions will get you good results. REST This is where the magic happens! Body adaptations don’t take place during exercise, they take place during rest. Aim for a minimum of 7 hours quality sleep per night. CONSISTENCY This is key for points 3-5. For example, don’t undo the excellent healthy eating and exercise you did in the week binging on junk food and booze at the weekend! A few changes can make a big difference. If you would like my help to feel your best in summer 2018, get in touch for a FREE Slim Down for Summer taster session. It’s not too late to ‘spring’ into action!

BUST THE

If there’s one thing you do in March, make it a spring clean.

H

ousehold dust has a huge number of components including carpet fluff, pet hair and clothes fibres, but two thirds of household dust comes from outside. Humans have evolved with dust, but the more frequent use of chemicals in our lives means dust now comprises of inhalable particles from lead-based paint, asbestos fibres and smoke. Dust in spring also carries airborne particles such as pollen, so now is the time to bust the dust, especially if you suffer from mould or fungi allergies. Fabrics retain dust and our houses are full of fabric items: curtains, duvets, pillows, rugs, throws, blankets – all are a haven for dust. So here are 3 ways to reduce dust in your home: Use a vacuum cleaner – give your rug and curtains a thorough hoover to lift out dust. Give it a beating – take your items outside and beat the dust out. Do this away from open windows and doors to prevent the dust blowing back into the house. Get your items cleaned – large or ‘Professional Clean Only’ items can be washed or dry cleaned by a professional Dry Cleaner to remove dust.

1 2 3

REMOVE THAT POLLEN STAIN Fresh flowers are lovely, but cutting, arranging, and transporting flowers can knock pollen loose and stain wherever it lands. Pollen stains can be difficult to remove, but here are some tips to help: Shake off loose pollen and then use Sellotape to lift the remaining pollen from the item – do not rub.

1

T: 01778 382762 | March 2018

27 Peters Cleaner.indd 27

2 3

Hang the item in the sunlight to fade the pollen. If the item is washable, rinse the pollen out using cold water. Rinsing from the back of the stain will force the pollen out the way it came in. You can try a stain remover if the stain persists after rinsing 2 or 3 times. For dry clean only fabrics, do nothing and take to a reputable Dry Cleaner for professional treatment. Before treating any mark or stain on your clothes or fabrics, check the care label. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only items as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics.

4

WHAT IS REPROOFING? Reproofing an item adds a layer or water proofing to it but it also stops dirt getting engrained. Most people only think of reproofing jackets, but reproofing can work well on upholstery, furniture covers and even rugs to stop the dirt setting in and ensuring they are protected from stains.

WE’VE SEEN IT ALL! We were asked by a local school to clean all their costumes and dressing up clothes. We cleaned ducks, knights, princesses, superheros and soldier outfits and donated a rail to hang them on. 1 Mayors Walk, Peterborough PE3 6EU 791 Lincoln Road, Peterborough PE1 3HE 13 St. Paul’s Street, Stamford PE9 2BE W peterscleaners.co.uk

ARE YOU SITTING

The Golden Sofa Rules – what you need to know

Space for points of interest

Y

our home should say exactly what you want it to say about you with one of the key elements being your furniture. A new sofa or chair is a big investment that needs to stand the test of time and work with the rest of the room. Here are a few golden rules to consider when purchasing a new sofa or chair: UTILISE YOUR SPACE

Always, always measure the intended space before purchasing and ensure it fits comfortably. You might like the look of the sofa, but

30

30-31 Hunters.indd 30

if it’s too big it will overpower the room and if it’s too small, it will look lost. You should have enough space to add points of interest such as tables on either side. Think about what you want your focal point to be, whether it’s a TV or a fireplace, the seating arrangement should be positioned comfortably around it. A sofa and chairs is becoming a popular alternative to two sofas as it breaks up the room giving the impression of space. If you are having chairs, using a beautiful fabric that compliments the sofa looks fabulous.

CONSIDER THE HEIGHT

IIf your room has low ceilings, a sofa with lower arms and a lower back works much better as raised arms will make the room height feel even lower. Low slung sofas and chairs will look lost in a room with a high ceiling so opt for a higher back and higher arms to maximise your space to its full potential. MIX AND MATCH

Gone are the days of matching chairs and sofas, it’s all about contrasting fabrics. Use fabrics that work in harmony together,

with the same colour palette. When selecting your fabric it has to be in keeping with the theme of the rest of the room, whether traditional, modern, or contemporary your fabric has to reflect it. BESPOKE TO YOU

There are many options to make your sofa completely bespoke to you, the little finishing touches like a nice contrast piping round the sofa or colour contrasting back buttons. These are the things that make your sofa/chairs really stand out. T: 01778 382762 | March 2018

30-31 Hunters.indd 31

MAKE IT PRACTICAL

We have a huge library of fabrics, so with so many to choose from, consider how it’s going to be used. If it’s going to have heavy usage or you have little ones or pets then it has to be durable. We supply fabrics suitable for upholstery with an 80,000 rub test and a stain repellent finish making them child/pet proof so you can enjoy your furniture without being too precious. DON’T SKIMP ON QUALITY

If a price looks too good, it probably is. You can’t fake good

quality. Our sofa and chair manufacturers are so confident of their furniture and strength of their frames, they offer a lifetime guarantee for frames and springs. So, unless you want to be replacing your furniture in a few years, choose quality over cost and you’ll save in the future. There is a lot to consider when investing in a new sofa and/or chairs, but if you’re undecided and need some inspiration, pop into our showroom in Uffington, just outside of Stamford, and we can advise you on what style, colour and fabric would best suit your room.

past time of many of our readers – caravanning and camping! This is new adventure for me, as I recently purchased a new AirBeam tent and managed to get out and about a few times last year. There are a huge number of quality camping sites locally, or indeed, all over the country, which is the one of the best things about camping or caravanning - you can explore many different places and kids absolutely love the adventure of sleeping outdoors. In Crowland, we have one the largest selections of tents and caravans on show plus some of the most knowledgeable people to assist with your choice and advise on what is best to enhance your experience – see pages 54 and 55. As well as all of these fabulous places to visit don’t forget that there are lots of other amazing places on our doorstep such as the Peterborough Museum, Nene Park, Burghley House, Flag Fen, Nene Valley Railway, Grimsthorpe Castle, Peterborough Cathedral and Clare Cottage, or even take a bike ride on the Green Wheel.

The setting for the book, ‘A Boggle at BeWILDerwood’ by local children’s author Tom Blofeld, BeWILDerwood is a wonderful, mystical land of brave, adventurous creatures who you may never see anywhere else in our world. The 18-acre adventure park is filled with zip lines, slides, mazes and lots of climbing through magical tree houses. A true haven for inquisitive young minds, a day at BeWILDerwood means time taking lazy boat rides, dressing up and joining in with the enchanting daily storytelling, braving the Broken Bridge and visiting tree houses, building dens with bracken and sticks, whizzing down Wobbly Wires and zooming down Slippery Slopes. With special events taking place within the park throughout the season at no extra cost - this is a world with more than a little sprinkling of fairy dust. BeWILDerwood, who celebrated their 10th Birthday last year, is ever growing. The Boggle Builders have been working hard making the park bigger and better than ever – boasting new additions such as Tiptoe Valley, a play area perfect for tiddlys, and a brand new Bouncing Bunny Burrow (with help from the Pesky Bunnies of course!) for Easter 2018! Located close to both Wroxham and the Broads, BeWILDerwood is ideal for a day out during your time in Norfolk, your journey is less than 90 minutes from Peterborough. Perfect for all the family, BeWILDerwood really is a breath of fresh air. Admission prices are based on height rather than age, as there’s some things in the park that require longer arms and legs! Under 92cm free, 92–105cm £14.50, over 105cm £16.50, over 65’s £9.50. BeWILDerwood also caters for School and Group visits, Brilliant Boggle Birthday Parties and even Sleepovers! Fancy! Meet Cedric the Easter Bunny at BeWILDerwood

Saturday 24th March – Sunday 15th April

A character world of Boggles, Crocklebogs and Twiggles

The Pesky Bunnies have been working ever so hard (in between chocolate breaks!) to make a brand-new bunny burrow for Cedric to live in, filled with confectionery curiosities and bunny home comforts. Hop on down this Easter Holiday and see what all the nose twitching is about. Cedric can’t wait for you to meet him and explore his hoppy-home! Spring has sprung in the woods so get ready for a hopping good time! Bounce your way through the Tricky Tunnels, bundle into one of the Twiggletastic tree houses and try to find all five Easter eggs in the woods (before the Pesky bunnies eat them!). And don’t forget to bunny-up when you visit, with their fun filled range of inclusive activities. The Big Hat is hosting Boggle Bunny Ear crafts, which coupled with Bouncing Bunny face painting will ensure lots of fun and giggles! Be sure to catch the terrific tale of The Pesky Bunnies at the Storytelling Stage, where you can meet a whole host of colourful characters such as Swampy the Marsh Boggle, Cedric the Easter Bunny (of course!), and Hazel the Good Witch. Everything is included in your day out, from face painting, crafts and storytelling, to den building and the enchanted boat ride through the Dismal Dyke through to the Scaaaary lake, make sure you look out for Mildred the Crocklebog! See you there, toodle-oo!

rowland Caravans and Camping have been trading for 17 years from their showroom in Crowland, although it has been a family run business for over 30 years and offers extensive experience within the industry. Selling a range of second hand and new caravans in addition to tents, awnings and camping and caravanning equipment, their knowledge and advice is invaluable. Air awnings and tents are the latest technology which allow you to open up the awning or tent and either attach to the caravan or loosely guy, and then inflate with a pump which is provided. Air tents eliminate the need for working out which set of poles belong to which and matching colour codes etc, so within a short space of time, you can be up and ready to enjoy your break. Crowland Caravans and Camping offer a wide range of awnings in both poled and air versions and display nine different ones in the showroom ranging from 200cm to 400cm. They also stock a wide range of kettles,

tables, chairs, cutlery and kitchen accessories as well as caravan spares, in addition to an extensive range of sleeping bags and sleeping equipment with over 60 bags and selfinflating mats on display. What better way to kick off your shoes, lay down and snuggle in! If you’re looking for equipment for a day out, then look no further. Easy to erect gazebo’s, thermally insulated picnic bags and coolboxes that will keep ice ‘ice’ for 5 days are ideal for those weekends away and music festivals (some come on wheels to make a great beer fridge!). During the summer you will find 40 + air and poled tents on display, available for you to walk around, touch and feel the quality of the fabric. We have a variety of tents in all shapes and sizes and will always do our best to find a solution to meet both your needs and your budget. Caravan servicing and repairs is also available on site - Crowland Caravans and Camping are an authorised repair agent for Elddis, Buccaneer, Lunar, Coachman and Swift caravans, old and new.

There are some real classics to be found hidden away in the DVD aisle in Poundland, which I absolutely urge you to go and check out!

FILM

T

here is much to be said about the dying of the DVD in favour of Netflix & Amazon, amongst other premium subscription sites. However, in the unlikeliest of places, DVD’s seem to be making a huge impact. If like me, you love a good old DVD to put into a player, then you may find some absolute bargains in Poundland. It may seem a bit strange, but the way I see it, Poundland are effectively like a car boot sale for DVD’s; you will always find something you never went looking for, but find yourself drawn to buying for no reason other than you need to watch the film again, drudging up some forgotten emotions shoved deep into your psyche. Seems a little much, I know, sorry. But Poundland have a great collection of DVD’s that you really should check out. My top bargains are below (and are films you should definitely check out, by the way): Drop Dead Fred: Rik Mayall (R.I.P) stars as a grotesquely immature imaginary friend who comes back to ‘life’ to help his previously young friend regain

some sort of perspective. Brilliantly funny, brilliantly childish and brilliantly, quintessentially British. Human Traffic: A docu-film following the hedonistic clubland life of a group of friends over a weekend in Cardiff. Starring Danny Dyer (as one of my favourite characters ever, Moff) and John Simm, it shows the club lifestyle in the good ol’ days whilst breaking the 4th wall (way before Deadpool did it by the way). Uncle Buck: John Candy stars as a totally out of touch Black Sheep of the family Uncle, who is called upon by his brother to watch his kids whilst he deals with his wife’s sick mother. Hilarity ensues in this John Hughes film that strikes you as similar to his most famous film, Home Alone. Brilliant! Blades of Glory: John Heder and Will Ferrell star in this utter mickey take of the serious ‘sport’ of figure-skating. Hated by each other, both are disqualified from participating and must join forces to compete again, whilst fighting of the overly awkward incestuous Van Waldenberg siblings, played by Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. Hilarious, if you like Will Ferrell.

FUTURE PROOF YOUR

It’s time to check your retirement plans!

I

f you were given a large sum of cash to invest or to buy a property with, perhaps £100,000, then we are certain that you would take great care in how this was invested. You would clearly understand the risk you were taking and the charges you were paying, you would probably take financial advice and want to see the value of your invested capital over time. Pensions often seem to be the exception to this and yet pension pot values of £100,000+ are very common. It is worrying, but perhaps unsurprising given the perception of rules and

regulations surrounding pensions, that a significant number of people simply don’t know how much they have saved for their retirement. Your pension should be there to generate your capital requirements and income for life. So as you approach your retirement, or if you have a number of years left to work, you need to keep tabs on your pension to ensure it will deliver what you’re expecting. Whichever pension you are in, you will receive an annual benefit statement which should act as a trigger to review your options. It will show you how your pension

Should you wish to arrange a FREE initial discussion with one of our team then please call our office on 01778 342291 is performing and whether you need to contribute more or even set up an additional pension. The Pensions Advisory Service warns that many people only look at their pension as they come to retire, by which point it is often too late to take action! If you’re confused about any aspect of your pension, the rules more generally, or how your own retirement will shape up, then we are here to help. Please contact our office to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

MEETING

Our first network meeting of the year was a great success with over 25 attendees arriving at The Whistlestop Inn in Tallington.

O

ur speaker on the morning was Sushma Bragg, who delivered a talk on the benefits of Aloe Vera, and we got to test and sample some of the products that have great healing and health benefits. The Whistlestop provided some delicious bacon rolls for us all, with lots of tea and coffee to go around. We definitely recommend a visit to this venue, recently under new management, to try the food and entertainment on offer. Our meetings are informal, friendly, and a great place to meet new contacts and grow your business

network. Why not pop along to the next one on 8th March, being held at the Lakeside Bar, Ferry Meadows. It costs just £10 to come along, and you get to meet a great network of local small business owners. Food is provided free of charge, and they are always a morning meeting 9.30am to 11.30am.

The Marchioness of Huntly and her Mammoth find at Orton Longueville! JUNE AND VERNON BULL – LOCAL HISTORIANS AND AUTHORS

G

eologist Dr Henry Porter MD FGS (born in Peterborough in 1832 – the son of a surgeon) wrote in 1869 about his archaeological digs at Orton Longueville (then Overton Longville) and how Amy, Marchioness of Huntly, first wife of the 11th Marquess of Huntly (Charles Gordon) was totally enthralled by animal and human activity through the discovery of material remains. Amy (nee Brooks) was born at Chorlton, Lancashire, and was the eldest daughter of a Barrister, banker and Conservative politician - 1st Baronet William Cunliffe Brooks. In 1869 Amy married Charles Gordon (a Scottish Liberal and they lived at

The largest and perhaps most wonderful was said to be the fossil remains of bones from a Elephas Primogenious Orton Hall, Orton Longueville and Aboyne Castle in Aberdeenshire) but sadly the marriage produced no children. Henry Porter and the Marchioness of Huntly started a dig in a field on the west side of the road called The Village in Orton Longueville. The pit dug by Porter showed a first layer of vegetable soil that was two feet thick, followed by a second layer of fine gravel that was four feet deep, then a third layer of about a foot of light coloured sand, containing a few pebbles and many fossil shells. The forth layer was of clay

and the following strata showed another layer of fine sand from one to three feet deep followed by a sixth layer of pebbles about the size of walnuts. All these layers were found to be resting on hard limestone rock, called Forest Marble. The fifth layer of fine sand contained bones of various species of land animals, some of a colossal size, that belonged principally to the Elephant, Horse, Ox, Deer and other like animals. The extraction from this fine layer of sand unearthed teeth and more indestructible bones. Many of these beautiful specimens were collected by the Marchioness herself. The largest and perhaps most

wonderful was said to be the fossil remains of bones from a Elephas Primogenious – more commonly known as a Woolly Mammoth that lived during the Ice Age. Its tusks were nearly 10 feet long. All its remains including its tail – measuring some 16 feet – formed part of the 11th Marchioness’ collection. Additionally, she was able to retain several other extinct species found during the dig, along with numerous fossil shells, like the Helix Pomatia – more commonly known as the Burgundy or Roman snail. These snails prefer low lying chalk and limestone areas. Today, they are edible, and you may have eaten escargot in garlic butter! The 11th Marchioness died, aged 70, on 13 May 1920. Her obituary in The Times newspaper, dated 19 May 1920, read: “The body of the Marchioness of Huntly was taken from Peterborough by the express train to Scotland T: 01778 382762 | March 2018

of find

11th Marquess of Huntly Charles Gordon last evening for burial at Aboyne today. The first part of the funeral service was conducted in Orton Longueville church (Holy Trinity). Messages were received from the King and Queen Alexandra. The procession from Aboyne station included a detachment of six pipers who played ‘The Flowers of the Forest’ on the way to the graveside.” It is interesting to note that Amy Brook came with a marriage Dowry of obscene proportions for the day. Sadly, the 11th Marquess managed to flutter most of it away through gambling. He remarried two years after the death of his first wife, Amy. His second wife was Charlotte Isabelle McDonald, an American, who

had been married twice before to rich American gentlemen. She was wise enough to keep their financial matters separate. It is likely that the 11th Marchioness’ archaeological collections were auctioned off in 1948. It is interesting to note that Amy’s father had a major influence on the estate of Glen Tanar, near Aboyne. At first, he leased the estate from the 11th Marquess of Huntly and then bought it in 1890. Brooks lavished money on Glen Tanar – building a large house, cottages for workers on the estate, a school, stables and kennels. NEXT ISSUE: Mr Alfred Caleb Taylor - the city’s scientific pioneer who sacrificed himself for others
