THIS

ell what a fabulous October! The weather was amazing for that time of year and the boiler had an extra month off, but we can certainly feel it now…. brrrr….! It is certainly getting very chilly, so dust off your winter coats and fire up the wood burner. It’s also getting even closer to the big event of Christmas (sorry), but as we know it isn’t going away. Children are invited to Queensgate to test some of the latest toys and gadgets set to be big for Christmas and judge them - results in the next issue. We also look at mental health and ways to train your mind as well as some truths about beauty products. Safe Local Trades highlight how vulnerable our older neighbours are as the nights draw in, and remind us all how important Neighbourhood Watch is. The council have launched their new campaign to help the homeless in Peterborough, see P42 for how you can help. Our diary pages include some fabulous shows and dates for Pantos and our film expert gives us dome great ideas for festive films. Have a cosy November and enjoy the latest issue.

he Tobie Norris is one of Stamford’s most popular and characterful pubs; built in the 13th century, the former bell foundry is a warren of quirky rooms, with uneven floors, gnarled beams and open fires. Delight in the architectural and vintage treasures as you enjoy a pint of real ale and tuck into traditional, hearty fare - even the largest of appetites will be satisfied here. The Tobie is dog friendly, and children are welcome during the day, however, after 8pm, this is very much an adult’s only pub, attracting a more mature, genteel crowd. 12 St Paul’s St, Stamford PE9 2BE

aten & Co opened last year having received a makeover befitting of its namesake (a wine and spirits merchant which stood on the site 100 years ago); with Victorian tiles aplenty, exposed metalwork and vintage pendant lights, Paten’s has the industrial look nailed. Food is a mix, match and share affair - choose from succulent meat dishes cooked in the charcoal oven, with small dishes on the side, or order from the menu like you would mezze and share the little plates of joy between the table. Paten’s extensive gin list and inventive cocktails draw in a fun crowd, making it a lively addition to the town’s bar scene. 7 All Saints Place, Stamford, PE9 2AG

he Crown Hotel is a handsome hotel, proudly overlooking All Saints Place and oozing with charm and character. The former coaching inn has two beautiful dining areas; a cosy lounge with low ceilings, quite corners and a roaring log fire come winter; plus a spacious bar with a magnificent bay window, through which, one can enjoy spectacular views of the church. The pretty courtyard garden is a particularly lovely place to enjoy a drink and attracts a sophisticated crowd at the weekend. The Crown is also a popular place to dine on Sundays, when roast lamb and beef from the owner’s farm are served! 6 All Saints’ Place, Stamford PE9 2AG Please mention Scene magazine when responding to advertisements

The plant-based lifestyle is on an upward surge, but who can honour our appetite? Kim Coley (Peterborough’s Vegan Group leader) shares some of her favourite vegan eats!

G

one are the days that the only dishes a herbivore could order at your average restaurant was chips and a side salad. With a whopping 700% increase in veganism in the last 2 years alone, we are finally evolving towards a lifestyle that is lighter on the planet, better for our health and less harmful to animals. But where do you go locally if you want someone else to cook? I have created my top list of places that can cater for you AND still inspire and satisfy your meat eating friends too! Peterborough: Pizza Parlour & Music Café

The Good Stuff

Bell Inn – Stilton From a vegetable curry, lentil bolognaise, or a delightful chocolate orange cheesecake, this establishment has plenty of choice with 4 starters, 5 mains, and 3 desserts on its own vegan menu. The Lean Pantry – Stamford Amongst many vegan options, this leading edge venue has artisan breads, Vegan Waffles, and Booja Booja ice cream, need I say more?

The first Pizza restaurant in Peterborough (that I know of) to offer dairy free cheese pizzas! You can convert any veggie pizza option into a vegan delight.

This small but mighty venue is really health oriented. You can order soups, protein pots, burritos, wraps and more, and choose your own vegan proteins to go with your dishes.

The Banyan Tree With a wide variety of vegetarian dishes, can be veganised on request.

There are many ways to embrace vegan living. Yet one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods. When Polly Met Fergie This new vegan restaurant opening in August in the city centre, is the talk of the city for vegans. With healthy fresh produce on the menu.

Fancy a vegan drink? The Ostrich Inn and Stoneworks have plenty of vegan ales, gins and more. Want to socialise? Anyone can join our Peterborough Vegan and Veggie Group. The main vegan food share and social being the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7pm at Soul Happy. Dining DELIGHTFUL

The owners of the Golden Pheasant in Etton are coming up to their first Christmas!

K

irstene & Johno first took the key in February 2018 and opened the pub with a blanket of snow on the ground and no chef. After some initial teething problems, they were then blessed with a fantastic summer of World Cup and sunshine, which suited the fabulous gardens they have and the superb children’s play area. The Golden Pheasant now serves fresh home cooked food all day, every day! The kitchen is open from 12 noon and doesn’t close till the evening service is finished so whatever time you fancy something to eat, their kitchen is open. The menu includes pub classics and gastro mains so something for everyone. There is no better way to kick start the weekend but with one of the Golden Pheasants English breakfasts, and for those hungrier mornings, the XLarge breakfast is really popular. There is also a diary of events throughout the year including a monthly quiz and music in the bar every Saturday. Their ever-popular vinyl night is the last

Friday of the month where you can dance the night away to funk Motown and northern soul. Throughout December there is a set festive menu for £26.95 - perfect for a works lunch or dinner or family get-together (please be sure to book). If you are looking for a great place to bring in the New Year, Kirstene and Johno are having a New Year’s Eve party in the Marquee. Tickets are on sale now at just £25 per person to include a hot and cold buffet and a glass of fizz as the clock strikes. Book online at goldenpheasantetton.com or call 01733 252387.

We are looking forward to celebrating with all our new friends as well as welcoming new ones

Community Support Mental Health Promotion Fund investment for MindSpace Stamford

M

indSpace Stamford, a grass roots initiative connecting people to existing mental health support and starting new projects, has recently had their funds boosted by an investment from the Mental Health Promotion Fund - a community fund from both Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) and Lincolnshire County Council. Organisations were invited to pitch for a share of £300,000 in June 2018. The fund aims to help adults of all ages who have experienced mental health problems to participate in a wide range of activities that will help them to recover and maintain as good a quality of life as possible. MindSpace Stamford has been successful in securing an investment towards their continued growth and

development and as a result, are now part of the ‘Managed Care Network’, a collection of community groups offering support and activities to help keep people living well in the community. David Jones, Managed Care Network, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said, “MindSpace Stamford is one of a number of very worthwhile causes making a difference to the lives of many in the local area and across Lincolnshire. We were delighted to be able to award investment from Wave 8 of our Mental Health Promotion Fund, to give this project the boost it needs to grow and become sustainable. We very much look forward to seeing how the funding will help this project expand and benefit the community it serves.” Dr Dan Petrie, Founder of Mindspace Stamford said: “The

trustees are absolutely delighted with this investment which will enable us to grow our services and support many more local citizens. Without the support of our amazing volunteers, we could not have achieved this positive outcome. If anyone would like to support our work on a voluntary basis, please do get in touch with us, no matter how small. Every bit of help really does make a difference.” MindSpace provides weekly walks and cafés, twice monthly holistic therapies and a monthly community cinema. For more information on the services provided by MindSpace Stamford or to volunteer, you can contact them on 01780 437330 or email info@ mindspacestamford.com

t’s more important than ever before that individuals experiencing mental health issues make themselves heard. In the UK, 1 in 6 adults have experienced some form of neurotic anxiety. It’s important to know the anxiety is inherently fear. Anxiety is not stress (though the two may intertwine at times) as it has no direction. We are stressed at or about something, but anxiety is the state of seeing danger when there is none.

3

Hypnotherapy teaches you to switch-off – we can’t be online all day - like our phones, we overheat! We can’t predict every worst-case scenario. Taking the time to go offline at times gives our unconscious time to process the day.

Hypnotherapy can find the root cause of anxiety – while anxiety is not a state that is directed onto any one thing in particular, it almost always has a singular cause. What is your body unconsciously scared of? Did something happen in the past that reset your body into this state? If your mind created the problem, it can create the solution!

4

Hypnotherapy helps you to build confidence in yourself – this, in turn, helps you tackle anything that life throws at you. When we feel stronger mentally and emotionally we feel better equipped to cope with what lies

TRAIN YOUR

Mind

Hypnotherapy helps to train your mind that doubt doesn’t mean danger – just because we don’t know what lies ahead, doesn’t mean it’s scary. Our minds feel that this doubt of the future is full of danger, but we are most likely safe in what lies ahead.

Hypnotherapy helps you think more logically – and not jump or leap to any irrational conclusions. Logic provides the mind with structure to ground itself on. When you make decisions passed on logic and not emotions, they tend to be better decisions. To find out more, visit www. nhs.uk

an you believe it’s already November and we only have one month left in this calendar year of 2018 until we will all be celebrating the start of a new year? I have thoroughly enjoyed writing monthly articles for readers of the Scene magazine and providing you with content packed full of information, advice and action steps to take. I am looking to interact with all of you and would love the December issue to include a ‘Have Your Say’ section, where I can answer any questions you may have on health and wellness. You can have your name and question published by writing to me at fiona.elizabeth. mccarthy@gmail.com I am excited to hear from you. Last month, I talked about ‘scary - avoid at all costs’ ingredients and would like to take this opportunity to educate you on one more ‘nasty’ to avoid. Have you ever heard of rendering plants? Rendering plants take in a wide variety of source materials that include parts such as brains, eyeballs, spinal cords, intestines, bones, feathers or hooves, as well as restaurant grease, supermarket rejects such as spoiled steak, road kill and in some cases, euthanised cats and dogs from veterinarians and animal shelters. O

n Saturday 17 November, families will see Queensgate come to life at 10.30am with this complete magical takeover. “It’s time to get excited, our ‘Festive Fiesta’ is unlike anything we’ve done before,” said Centre Director at Queensgate, Mark Broadhead. The regional shopping centre will amaze shoppers with a stunning extravaganza of dancing, music, entertainment, and magic. Everywhere shoppers look there will be a celebration of Christmas. Dancing bellboys, mischievous elves, nutcracker ballerinas, drummers, plus the hilariously hideous Ugly Sisters come to life to start the joyful season with a bang.

Join Santa’s elves as they test out Queensgate’s top toys for Christmas!

I

t’s that time of year again! Queensgate’s famous Christmas Toy Testing event is returning Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November and it promises to be the most magical yet. Alongside Santa’s cheekiest elves, young ‘testers’ from the region will be able to play with the predicted top toys for 2018 and give their opinion. From 11am-5pm on both days, your little ones will be able to try, test, play with and score each item, helping the centre to crown their number one Christmas toy of the year.

Taking place in a pop-up Christmas toy factory located in Central Square outside Primark, this free event promises to be super fun and festive. This year, the event will separate children into two age groups: up to 4 years and 4 years plus, so the elves can make sure each child is roadtesting the toys that are best for them.

Retailers including John Lewis, Game and FlyingTiger will submit their predicted top toys, gadgets and gizmos, for testing by the younger generation, who most definitely know best! By revealing what they truly think, each child will be helping to make sure that Santa fills his sleigh with all the right goodies this Christmas Eve!

Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre, said: “We’re looking for sharp little testers to meet our elves and critique this year’s hottest toys. Bring your children along, get into the festive spirit and you never know, you might even get some gift inspiration of your own!” This year, the centres Charity of the Year partner, Little Miracles will also be getting involved with the event and there will be a sensory lead Toy Testing session held for children with special needs on Sunday 4 November at 10am.

Neighbours sticking together As the nights pull in, make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark

A

t this point in the year, the clocks have gone back and we start to think more about winter. It’s also the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or guttering needs repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return.

Consumer advice by Safe Local Trades

Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are actually as equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non-existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even so-called medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aids from electric chairs to stair lifts. Share these tips with family, friends, elderly neighbours or relatives: • Be careful what you say about yourself on social media • Check your privacy settings

• Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn to a minimum (your name) and don’t post your address or date of birth • Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc • In public places make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the years. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. More information can be found on our Safe Local Trades website. Meanwhile, don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is. Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople in a range of areas, all of which come with a customer seal of approval. www.safelocaltrades.com www.safelocalservices.com

Cleaning! AWA R D W I N N I N G

Mercury Business Award winners Peters’ Cleaners give us their top tips for the month ahead

Peters’ Cleaners won 2 awards at the Mercury Business Awards 2018 for Best Customer Care and Best Independent Retailer. We were praised for putting the Customer at the ‘very core’ of our business and ensuring everything we do focuses on giving the best service in relation to both cleaning and the whole customer experience. For Best Independent Retailer, described as an extremely strong category, we were praised for our A tip for November - get your summer duvets cleaned If you haven’t already done it, now is the time to swap your light summer duvet for your winter one. Launder your duvet so it will be fresh for summer and reduce the risk of mites and bed bugs. If washing at home, ensure you dry it thoroughly as if damp, it will start to smell. Do not store in a plastic bag as the duvet may ‘sweat’ causing it to go mouldy. Large, silk and wool duvets can be cleaned by a professional cleaner. Got a bit muddy?! Before washing an item with mud on, allow the mud to dry and brush or hoover off what you can. Once the excess is removed, if the item is washable, soak it in diluted fabric detergent (liquid is better than powder) for an hour, gently rubbing the muddy area at regular intervals to shift the mud. You can then wash in your machine. You may need to soak and wash again if the mud stain is not fully removed, or use a stain remover.

Winners! commitment to our customer, resulting in a high level of growth, transforming a struggling business into a sustainable and profitable one.

Special care and attention We love this Vivienne Westwood dress. Not trusting any other dry cleaner, a customer based in Edinburgh brought it to us as it was covered in brown stains. After some care and attention it was presented back as good as new. Water may damage some fabrics so before treating any mark or stain on your clothes or fabrics check the care label. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics. Common Law Husband & Wife - will Civil Partnerships be the answer?

F

or years, unmarried couples have used the term Common Law husband and Wife when referring to themselves. But in reality, there is no such thing. However, a recent ruling by the Courts will give unmarried couples a new option when it comes to formalising their relationships – Civil Partnership. Originally introduced for same sex couples, the Civil Partnership offers couples who don’t want to go through a formal marriage ceremony the chance to benefit from the many benefits that marriage has traditionally provided.

At the forefront of these rights is the right to inherit your partner’s wealth and to share the Inheritance Tax benefits that mean that the families of a married couple, or civil partners can be up to £180,000 better off after death. That’s the good news – however it is not happening yet, there is a government consultation, and unmarried couples are still running a huge risk if they don’t have any planning in place. Remember too that once the new rules come in, entering into a civil partnership will almost certainly revoke any planning that you have already got in place.

Need to know more? Need to make or update your planning? If you need any help or advice with what the new rules will mean to you, or if you want to secure your family’s future in the meantime, give us a call now to book a consultation and we will help. Special offer for unmarried couples! Write your Wills with Will and Probate Services before the end of 2018 and we will update everything free of charge when you enter into your Civil Partnership. With a little help from ‘Capability’ Brown! Earls, successors, deaths and lasting memories

I

n May this year I told the story of John, the 5th Earl of Burghley, of his catholic belief and of his journeys to Italy, and his death in 1700. His son John was just 26 when he became the 6th Earl and was challenged by John’s significant debts. He died in 1721 and his son, yet another John, became the 7th Earl. Sadly, he died just a year later and his successor was Brownlow – the 8th Earl who, like his father, became a British peer and a Member of the House of Lords. He was the second son of the 6th Earl and went on to marry Hannah Sophia Chambers, the daughter of Thomas Chambers, a London merchant and Governor of the Company of the English Copper Company, in 1724. Brownlow died in November 1754, aged 53, and was succeeded in his titles by his eldest son – also called Brownlow! Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter was the eldest son and had been educated at Winchester and St. John’s College, Cambridge. He was elected to the House of Commons for Rutland in 1747 and

held the seat until 1754, when he succeeded his father in the earldom and entered the House of Lords. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland. He was childless and died in December 1793, aged 68 – but he left a memory for the house and garden that lasts to the present day!

Words by Brian Jones

The man that helped him was one Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown! The avenues in the park – visible and usable to this day - were all laid out by ‘Capability’ Brown. In doing this, Brown payed due respect to pre-existing plantings, some of which were from the 16th century or earlier. In 1775-80 he created the park’s man-made lake and in doing-so he discovered a seam of waterproof ‘blue’ clay in the grounds. With that he was able to enlarge the original nineacre pond to the existing 26-acre lake with its clever design gives the impression of a meandering river. In 1778 Lance designed the Lion Bridge at a then-current cost of 1,000 guineas. He originally used Coade-stone lions as ornamentation but, after these weathered, the existing stone

He was able to enlarge the original nine-acre pond to the existing 26-acre lake with its clever design gives the impression of a meandering river. examples were made by local mason Herbert Gilbert in 1844. Brownlow died in 1793 and was succeeded by his nephew Henry – the 10th Earl. In 1801 he was elevated to the rank of Marquess and to celebrate he built the magnificent Bottle Lodges. He also had a change of wives – but that’s a different story!

Let us put your mind at rest Are you anxious about letting someone else review your finances? Fear not and let us help you.

T

o meet a professional can often be thought to be a stressful and anxious experience and that was certainly the case for Mrs X as she called to see us recently for the first time. Her plan was to review her ‘many’ pensions, none of which she understood. Both she and her husband have had recent ill health, heightening her need to consider retirement planning. She simply wanted to enjoy the proceeds of all their efforts before it was too late. In particular, they plan to finally take those holidays they have spoken for so long about. Our goal in meeting with her was initially to put her mind

at rest. We spent some time discussing their planning, and in particular, attained a thorough understanding of their goals. As is very often the case, when a client starts to openly talk about their finances, they recall many of the smaller details that perhaps they didn’t feel are relevant; a ‘small pension’ with a company they worked for a long time ago, or a pension with a company they only worked with for a few years. Mrs X had both of these, which could ultimately form an integral part of her retirement planning. We are still in the process of completing our full review with her but we are certain she left our office feeling very relaxed and at ease with the

thought that we had the situation under control and that she and her husband could now focus on enjoying the finer things in life. If this scenario sounds familiar and you keep putting off seeing a professional, then rest assured we have a team of friendly and experienced Financial Planners who will work with you to start making you feel relaxed about your own financial landscape. Chasing dreams and fauna - Hill style! Our very own Apothecary, Physician, Play-write, Author, Botanist, and Superintendent of Kew & Kensington Palace gardens, Sir John Hill.

A

pothecary, Physician, Play-write, Author, Botanist, and Superintendent of Kew and Kensington Palace gardens, John Hill was the son of the Reverend Theophilus Hill and his wife Mary. John was born in Peterborough in 1714 being baptised at St John the Baptist, Peterborough Parish Church, on 17 November that year.

Even by the bizarre standards of the 18th century John appears to have been a very odd character. At different times, he was an apothecary, an actor, a theatre critic, and according to the poet Christopher Smart, an ‘arch dunce’! A non-contemporary, Percy Fitzgerald (art & theatre critic) said of John that he had: ‘scurrilous courage on paper and had no less

Words by: June & Vernon Bull – local historians and authors abject pusillanimity (meaning he is hopeless and weak spirited) when called to account for his outrages’. He (Hill) had a libellous periodical, called “The Inspector,” which he wrote entirely himself, which earned him in a year no less than fifteen hundred pounds. In this organ he assumes the airs of a public critic and could air his own opinions … with an amusing vanity’. However, John certainly merits more serious consideration, for he played an important role in the mid-18th century as a theorist on theatre techniques and acting. His book “The Actor” published in 1750 was a translation of Le Comédien (first printed in 1747) by Pierre Rémond de Sainte Albine. A second edition of “The Actor” was published in 1755 but this time it was translated back into French as “Garrick, ou, Les Acteurs Anglais”. The book was well received because of its theories on acting. John argued that as much skill should go into portraying a soldier as a monarch, a bit part as a romantic lead, and maintained that ‘playing is a science, and should be studied as such’ and in consequence ‘a perfection in the player is the hiding himself in his character’.

writings show him to have been a man of real ability and genius”. During his lifetime John was viewed as conceited, eccentric and keen on self-publicity and because of this he gained few friends. His quest for wealth and recognition seem to have been marred by these frailties. Although, in retrospect John had many careers: apothecary, practical botanist, actor, gardener (whilst Superintendent of Kew Gardens he helped lay out a botanic garden and on the accession of King George III he was made Principal Gardener at Kensington Palace) and wrote 76 miscellaneous botanical works. Recent research seems to indicate that John was not the quack many portrayed him as, because in his

John’s huge botanical work “The Vegetable System” published 1759-1775 runs to 26 volumes and contains 1600 engravings of 26,000 different plants. It is considered as one of the most extensive botanical volumes of the 18th century! In 1774 the King of Sweden bestowed upon John, the Order of the Vasa (Knight of the Polar Star) in recognition of his services to agriculture. Thus, Dr John Hill became Sir John Hill. John certainly merits more serious consideration, for he played an important role in the mid-18th century as a theorist on theatre techniques and acting. John Hill died on 21 November 1775 having led a controversial life with many achievements – being a prolific contributor to Georgian England’s literature, medicine and science. Soon after his death his wife (The Hon. Henrietta Jones, sister of Charles - the forth Viscount Ranelagh) attributed the loss of her husbands fortune and health to the 3rd Earl of Bute (Prime Minister from 1762-1763) who was married to Lady Mary Montagu (titled Countess of Bute) and

daughter of Sir Edward Wortley Montagu, Peterborough’s MP (City Scene March 2017 refers). Next Issue: Technical education in Peterborough during the early to mid-1900s

End street homelessness

A new partnership from across the city has come together to launch a campaign aimed at ending street homelessness in Peterborough.

T

he partnership, called Safer Off the Streets Peterborough (#SOSPboro), brings together organisations from voluntary, faith, community and public service organisations who will work together to aid those who are sleeping rough on our streets. The partnership’s campaign includes a new contactless donation card window outside The Argo Lounge in St Peter’s Arcade which will directly help the street homeless; new outreach and rehabilitation programmes across the next 12 months and beyond; and a dedicated website - www. saferoffthestreets.co.uk - bringing vital services and information together all in one place.

Christine Graham, Chair of the Safer off the Streets Partnership and Co-ordinator of Peterborough Street Pastors Scheme said: “Rough sleeping is the most visible and unacceptable consequence of homelessness. Alongside the number of people sleeping rough in Peterborough, there are many other individuals and households living in temporary accommodation and experiencing homelessness in our city.”

Donations received through the Safer off the Streets online donation page will primarily go towards funding the day to day running costs of The Garden House drop in providing advice, support services and health and wellbeing advice with any additional funds being used for personalised budgets for rough sleepers to encourage them to leave the streets for good.

All the partners in Safer off the Streets believe that everyone has the right to a home, to have hope and to feel part of a community.

The Garden House,

• Outreach officers - Safer off the Streets will co-ordinate schedules for night shelters, food donations, cooked meals, volunteers and transportation, as well as in-shelter support services. • A Rehabilitation package will be set up to help rough sleepers, aiming to take them from the first point of contact into night shelters, training, and ultimately housing and/or employment.

• Peterborough Winter Night Shelter – The night shelter has been running since 2015 and has supported over 150 homeless people in Peterborough. This Winter season the night shelter will be running from 26 November until 18 March. On Wednesday, 10 October 2018, partners pledged their support to work together to tackle street homelessness by signing the Safer Off the Streets charter at the Guildhall in Cathedral Square. The charter states the values and aims of the campaign and will be located in the new drop-in centre.

haws of Maxey have a superb selection of great value Door2Door holidays and days out, offering an ideal package for Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and the Rutland areas. I was thrilled when I was offered a trip to see Jeff Lynne’s ELO at the Nottingham Arena! The coach picked us up at a convenient location in Stamford where we were greeted by our friendly driver. With only two pick up points, we were soon

on our way. The coach was much smarter than those back in the day, with comfy seats and seatbelts. We arrived in plenty of time and took advantage of the nearby pub, prior to finding our seats. The Nottingham Arena was well organised and a fantastic venue for such large numbers. The atmosphere was electric, fitting for such an act. The act lived up to its name and a great sing-along was had by all. The driver who was waiting outside the venue checked all who came had returned after the event and off we went home, tired but happy! With so many fabulous trips to choose from, why not make life easier and leave the car at home. The Adventures of Dolly the Dolphin Jacqueline Hedington who is a teaching assistant in a local school has had her very first children’s book published. I asked Jacqueline about the inspiration behind her book… “My youngest daughter (who is now 22) was given a soft toy dolphin as a child, which she named Dolly. We used to spend many hours wondering and talking about what Dolly would do if she came to life, and what she would get up to whilst my daughter slept; these adventures inspired the book. Dolly the Dolphin will surprise you with what she gets up to and where she goes.” The book is only £4.99 and can be purchased from Amazon, Waterstones, Foyles or directly from the author Jacqueline Hedington by visiting www. jacquelinehedington.co.uk.

The Scene has 2 books to give away, so if you would like the opportunity to win one, please email your name and telephone number to dee@scenepublishing.co.uk. Closing date 30th November.

In Flanders Fields This year is the last one to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Great War or World War 1. Members of the British Legion will be out selling poppies to remember all those who fought, were injured or died because of war.

F

unds raised by poppy sales are used to support all of today’s service people veterans, those still serving and their families. But why a poppy?

wrote about picking one to put behind his ear whilst waiting to go ‘over the top’ of his trench to face the German Army. Despite what he had been through, the poppy remained in place.

‘In Flanders Fields’ was written in 1915 by John McCrae, an Army doctor serving in Belgium. He told how the poppy still grew on the battlefields even though it was pitted by bomb craters, littered with abandoned weapons and the dead. One poet, Isaac Rosenberg,

Recalling the letters they had received from their men, the poems that had been published, and needing something to remember their loved ones, in 1921, women began to make poppies from silk to sell, raising money to help the disabled and

injured men who could not work, the war widows and their families. One British Legion member recalled his father dying of poor health and injuries as a result of The Great War. Without her husband’s wages, his mother had just £1 per week to raise the family. The Poppy Appeal came forward with an additional 5 shillings a week that helped keep the family together. Now in his 90s, he still sells poppies to give others the same help he had, and to remember his father and friends that he lost when he fought during WW2. So, don’t forget to buy your poppy and, if you would like to do more, please join the British Legion. We meet every second Monday of the month at 7.30pm at The Goat Inn, Frognall. You will be more than welcome.

Pulling out the stops Award-winning ‘Totally Tina’ show is simply the best!

T

he UK’s official number one Tina Turner tribute act is now seven years in the making. The show has the same passion, drive and attention to detail that’s earned Liverpool-born Justine Riddoch and her band the top spot since 2013. They are fine-tuning what is a unique celebration of Tina’s live concert career with a whole host of exciting set changes and flamboyant costumes, pulsating new dance routines and the characteristic custom twists which make it a hit with an army of fans nationwide.

Most importantly, and for the first time ever, the band has been asking its audiences what they’d like to hear played, so songs like I Can’t Stand The Rain, Typical Male, Undercover Agent for the Blues, I Don’t Wanna Lose You, Help and Legs – all chosen by the fans – will be added to classic favourites like Nutbush City Limits and Simply The Best. Lead vocalist, Justine talks of the show: “The support of our many fans across the country is humbling; they’re truly amazing and incredibly loyal. Every year,
