We designed the room with a level entry wet floor and a more contemporary freestanding bath and introduced a television at the end of the bath for complete indulgence. We also tiled one feature wall with brick style tiles and brought this into the room by tiling the back of the alcoves with the same

finish. These are beautifully highlighted with the use of LED lighting directed upwards from the half height false wall. The basin also has an LED light which is activated by a sensor as you approach the basin.

ARE YOU

The Crepe Cabin – a quirky horsebox converted into a thriving business urinder and husband Surb, business partner, wanted to start their own family business for a few years, but just weren’t sure what they wanted to do. One day whilst at Camden Market in London, they saw crepes being made on a cart and were immediately hooked. Here, Surinder tells their story. “We thought that crepes were such a versatile product, it’s not a burger or sandwich and can be sweet or savoury. It’s a food that appeals to so many and we felt there was a gap in the market that would ensure we could really make this work. It’s a been a real experience from the word go as our first task was finding the right set up. We looked at different kinds of catering trailers and suitable catering units. We bought the Rice Horsebox and the renovation work began. We found a welder to do all of the work on the body and my husband installed the interior units and fittings. The business is taking off well and we are taking bookings for corporate events, weddings and private parties. Some of our corporate customers include Citroen, The Queens Veterinary School Cambridgeshire and RAGT seeds.”

A summer salad with an Indian twist!

ou know when you are on holiday abroad and the salads taste so much better - why is that?! Is it the sunshine? Is it the fact that you don’t have to do the washing up afterwards? Well, I think it’s all of the above plus the fact that when I’ve had a salad abroad, they often serve it at room temperature and this allows the flavours to amalgamate.

a heavy dressing or oodles of olive oil. It has bags of flavour and with a real zing plus goes with almost anything, not just Indian food.

With this in mind, I would like you to try my lemon and coriander salad. It tastes wonderful considering it’s not smothered with

The dressing is made with freshly squeezed lemon and fresh coriander leaves, which wakes the salad up and brings it to life. Give it a go for yourselves and serve at room temperature for best results. You will notice the difference, especially the tomatoes, they are much sweeter when they are not cold. I usually keep some tomatoes in my fruit bowl, well technically it is a fruit!

Lemon & Coriander Salad

Method Prep Time: 10 mins Serves: 4-6 with main meal 1. Wash and thoroughly drain the lettuce, tear the lettuce leaves into pieces and place into a large bowl. 2. Halve the tomatoes and slice into pieces, then slice the cucumber and add to the bowl. 3. Finely slice the onions into half moons, they look prettier this way.

Ingredients 1/4 of an Iceberg lettuce

4. Add the salt, lemon juice and fresh coriander before gently mixing together. Leave at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving. For more recipes and Parveen’s cook book, log onto www.ParveenTheSpiceQueen.com

Parveen’s Top Tip

By tearing the lettuce or using a plastic knife instead of a metal one, it will remain crisper for longer.

Healthy Body C H E A LT H Y M I N D

Inspiration for a healthier mind, spirit and body an you believe it’s already July! If you’ve been reading all my articles since the beginning of the year, you will (hopefully) by now, be making more conscious, healthier choices for what products you put onto your skin, as well as what you eat - or should I say absorb. As our overall health is mind, spirit and body, I was looking for the perfect piece of inspiration to share with you and wanted to share the picture below. Many of you will be starting to see results by making healthier choices and this will help you to be on track to a better lifestyle.

think “well the scale hasn’t budged, so clean eating isn’t working for me, I’ll just go back to my diet coke and fast food.” Every cell in your body is being turned over right now, creating a new, more vibrant you! Fatigue, excess weight, sickness, illness, inflammation, depression, addictions... none of those happen overnight, but over weeks, months, years, even decades.

Just like ‘age is nothing but a number’ – the same is true of your weight.

If your main intention is to lose weight and you’re still not seeing progress on the scales, you need to know that you are more (far more) than a number on a scale. Just like ‘age is nothing but a number’ – the same is true of your weight. Just because you don’t see proof by the way of numbers, don’t think for one minute you aren’t changing your health from the inside out and don’t for a second

SO DO NOT GIVE UP! WHAT YOU ARE DOING MATTERS.

Instead of thinking about where you are not (yet), think about how far you’ve come! Our thoughts and feelings control our actions and if you find yourself having a pity party that lasts more than a day, I highly encourage you to start a ‘gratitude journal’ and jot down 10 things you are grateful for. This will help you to reflect on what you have and by appreciating all the good things in your life, you will shift your energy into a happier state. Have a wonderful July everyone.

10-a-day Stuggling with five? Find out how to tackle 10!

C

urrent guidelines have increased from the recommend five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to gut-busting 10. This number comes from researchers from Imperial College, London who analysed 95 studies involving fruit and vegetables and found 10 portions of fruit and vegetables per day reduces our risk of cancer and heart disease. Before you start purchasing a larger fruit bowl or juicer please note that any increase in fruit and vegetables will give you a better chance of avoiding chronic disease and premature death. Eating more fruit and vegetables isn’t new health advice, but while most of us know what we should be eating and what we shouldn’t; when juggling work, life and family it can feel a struggle to put what we know into practice. So, if like me you don’t reach for the fruit bowl regularly enough, then we need to get more creative with our meals and pack them with fruit and vegetables. Here are some simple and sneaky ways to include more fruit and vegetables into your diet.

Don’t feel overwhelmed aiming for 10 – just feel fantastic for eating more fruit and vegetables • Add a tin of cannellini beans/ chickpeas/butter beans to your soup/curry/stew. 80g counts as one portion of fruit and vegetables. • Add a handful of fruit to your cereal. • Add some parsnips to your mashed potato, or try mashed cannellini beans and parsnip with a dash of mustard. • Add raisins and grated apple to your flapjack mix. • Keep a packet of frozen fruit, simply defrost and add to greek yogurt. • Use more fruit in your cakes like carrot, banana and apricots. • Swap your jam on toast for peanut butter and banana.

onto your salad, or add grapes or apple. • Add grated carrot, apple and mayonnaise to your cheese sandwich • Spread peanut butter on your sliced up pear or apple or dip your sectioned fruit into a pot of yogurt for a fulfilling snack.

CHOOSING THE CHEAPEST AGENT How many times have you opted for the cheaper option, only to have to return and buy the quality option. As the saying goes, buy cheap, buy twice. Alarmingly, 50% of sellers choose the WRONG estate agent and HAVE to change when selling their property.

HOME & GARDEN

4 costly mistakes to avoid when selling your property!

Contact us today and find out why 97.5% of sellers DIDN’T change when choosing us as their preferred estate agent to sell their property.

3

21

REFUSING AN EARLY OFFER BECAUSE ITS AN EARLY OFFER Ok so we’re not saying you should accept ALL early offers, just don’t refuse them because they are early. We’ve seen sellers reject over asking price offers from excellent buyers in the first week or two of marketing, only to sell under asking price 6/8 weeks later. Remember: According to rightmove.co.uk, 70% of interest in a house for sale, comes in

the first 3 weeks of marketing. That is your premium price opportunity.

4

TAKING THE VIEW ‘I’M IN NO RUSH’ 12 days is the optimum time for a house to achieve its maximum selling price, according to analysis by the Home Owners Alliance. Whether you’re in a rush or not, the longer you leave your house sitting on the market, the less chance you have of getting optimum price. h s e r F s e h t o l C KEEP

Keep your clothes looking great with tips and advice from Peters’ Cleaners

Y

ou will probably find that your summer clothes need cleaning more regularly than winter clothes as generally the colours are lighter, the fabrics more delicate and they are affected more by sweat and grime. Ensure you clean clothes regularly (use a cool setting when you can) and do not let the dirt and stains set in.

1. Washing-up liquid – dab the area dry (do not rub), apply a little cold (not hot) water and then a drop of washing-up liquid. Gently massage into the stain and leave for 15 mins. Pat dry, do not rub, repeat if necessary. Once the stain is out, wash as normal.

Remove stubborn make-up stains

2. Hairspray – spray onto the area and allow to harden (you may need many layers). Use a cool damp cloth to pat the area and lift the stain with the hairspray.

Make-up takes many forms and your local dry cleaner should be able to remove any stains without damaging fabric. If you want to treat at home though, here are some tips. Remember to always test a small area of the fabric before fully applying the treatment to reduce the risk of damage:

professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics. As good as new! We cleaned upholstered chairs that had had food and drink spilt on them. For extra protection we gave the option of re-proofing them.

3. Ice cubes – scrape off excess lipstick etc. Rub the ice cube onto the stain then pat dry. 4. Nylon tights – for powdered make-up blow excess powder off the item using a cold hairdryer. Rub the affected area with nylon tights to lift the remaining powder. We do not recommend the above for silk etc. Before treating any mark or stain on your clothes or fabrics, please check the care label. If in any doubt, seek

Q - How can I get garlic olive oil out of linen? A - Oil is best removed by dry cleaning but the smell of garlic is best removed by washing. If washing at home you could try applying washing-up liquid to remove the oil stain and smell, but if you don’t want to risk damage, do nothing and take it to your local dry cleaner. They can treat the stain and dry clean it. Once the stain is removed the item can be carefully washed to eradicate any smell.

HOME & GARDEN

Your Garden LOV E

Secure your garden against green-fingered thieves this summer

A

s a nation of garden lovers, us Brits are increasingly turning our outdoor spaces into extensions of our homes - cosy corners to relax in, BBQ areas for alfresco dining, and play dens for the kids. Splashing out on making our gardens look great can mean spending a small fortune on lighting, furniture, ornaments, plants, ornaments and even wall art. But while most of us ensure our house alarm is switched on, doors are locked and a light is left on when the house is empty, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? Brighter days and longer weekends present more opportunity for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, allowing the children to play outdoors and spending time with friends and family… and a chance for thieves to strike. According to the Crime Prevention website, garden crime has risen to about a million reports a year. Garden crimes jump by

Words by Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades about 50 per cent during the summer months but can of course happen all year round. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything from the garden, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond and even newly laid turf! However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against green-fingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes). • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home. • Install some sensory / outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors.

• If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend, lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch group – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. Find your nearest group www.ourwatch.org.uk When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and / or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. repare to be taken back in time, back to Medeshamstede, when Peterborough was born, as Queensgate Shopping Centre puts on a week-long celebration and festivities to mark the 900th anniversary of the city. From Monday 30 July until Sunday 5 August, shoppers are invited to step into a medieval village, complete with a castle and towering turrets, in Central Square.

Walk across the drawbridge, through the giant gates and into the courtyard where real knights, villagers and churchmen go about their daily lives. The grand hall houses a giant banquet table, creating the perfect setting for activities to take part in, such as bread making, crown and shield making workshops, Merlin’s spell school, dressing up, stories of bravery and valour and much more. Watch knights of the round table battle with incredible sword skills, listen to traditional harps

few well-placed shrubs not only give your garden structure and substance, but also add a splash of colour, and the evergreen varieties will give your borders a continually attractive shape and foliage.

HYDRANGEAS give a dramatic display with their beautiful large and unmistakable flowers. They prefer a sheltered spot with moist soil and particularly like partial shade. A good-natured hydrangea is Annabelle – producing lots of stunning white flowers.

Here are 10 garden greats!

Planning for your Future Report reveals negative views on growing older

R

ecent research has revealed that so-called millennials are the most likely to feel negative about growing older. The report on ageism, published by The Royal Society for Public Health in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, found that many see the ageing process in a negative light, taking the view that it’s a period of decline. It also showed that many see an element of inevitability in growing older, with 30% of those asked taking the view that being lonely is just something that happens in later life. The report also showed that those aged between 18-34 felt the most negatively towards growing older, with around a quarter believing that growing unhappy or depressed is normal for older people. Two-fifths of the group also felt that dementia is an

unavoidable part of the ageing process.

Like most But it doesn’t have to be like that‌ Like most things in life it all comes things in life it down to good planning. Dementia is a all comes down to big issue with one in fourteen elderly people living with the condition. good planning But treatment is getting better and breakthroughs are happening almost every month. The later years can be some of the most enjoyable, spending time with friends, families and having the choices to do what you want in life. But of course, these things only happen if you plan early and look after your health from an early age. If you want more information on planning for later life or assistance with putting your plans in place we are happy to help. Call Will & Probate Services on 01778 382723.

Saving for a rainy day!

39

Is a High Street Bank Savings Account really the way to go?

M

any people believe the best way to save is to put money into a High Street Savings Account – either one with instant access or one with restricted access. An Instant Access Savings Account is exactly what it says on the tin – a Savings Account you can access instantly. However, over the past 10-15 years, interest rates have dropped to a nominal rate and you’ll be lucky to find an Instant Access Savings Account that offers interest rates above 1.00%. Your money is therefore, actually losing purchasing power over the long term as the growth is below Inflation. A Restricted Access account will offer better interest rates, but you must adhere to certain restrictions, such as putting in a specific amount each month, not withdrawing the money over a certain period of time, and so on. They may offer better interest rates but remove the accessibility you might require in case of an emergency. Restricted Access Saving Accounts also often struggle to offer interest rates that are equal to or greater than inflation as well.

There is a third option - an Individual Savings Account (ISA). ISAs offer you the chance to save money with a realistic opportunity to see real growth above inflation, via a Stocks and Shares ISA (although there is no guarantee you will get back what you invest). Or you can invest directly into a Cash ISA which often offers a higher level of growth than a High Street Bank Savings Account and you’re able to have instant access, should you need it. Another bonus to using ISAs is you’re allowed to invest up to £20,000 each tax year and any growth is Tax Free! If you would like to explore the possibility of moving your savings into an ISA then please contact us to arrange a FREE initial discussion with one of our advisers. th century settlers to Medeshamstede (now Peterborough) can claim to have been the first resting place of Christianity in Central England!

During the 5th century Teutonic tribes (probably Germanic or Celtic people), which had previously settled in the lowlands around the Baltic and North seas, landed on our shores and engaged in fierce conflicts with the Britons. The Jutes (Germanic people who may have come from Jutland) and Saxons (settlers from Roman times) made progress in the south and the Engles/ Angles (another Germanic people who gave their name to England) descended on the east coast, finding their way up the Welland, the Ouse and the Nene to the Fens and forests of East Anglia and the Midlands.

Words by June & Vernon Bull – Local Historians and Authors The Fens extended from Cambridge to Lincoln (73 miles) and from Brandon to Stamford (a width of 36 miles). The area consisted of swampland with large patches of reed-shoals, plus islands like Thorney, Ramsey and Whittlesey. The only drainage attempted was the cutting by the Romans of Car Dyke – a navigable canal which with the river Nene linked Durobrivae (Castor) with Lindum (Lincoln). A tribe named

the Gyrwas (Anglo Saxon name for those who settled in the deep bog areas) settled in the Fens. Hugh Candidas, a 12th century chronicler of Peterborough Abbey describes its foundation in the territory of Gyrwas under the name of Medeshampstede which was in the northern part the boggy Fens. The end of the 5th century saw the east coast from the Wash to Southampton Water in the hands of the invaders and the process of pushing westward continued until 50 years later most had advanced and penetrated as far as Litchfield and Repton. Here the Gywras settled forming the English frontier known as Mercia – meaning marsh or borderland. By the 7th century kingdoms had risen and established themselves north and south and Christianity worked its way into the hearts of the Saxons and Angles. Mercia alone was almost untouched by it and King Penda saw an opportunity to make political capital by impressing on his subjects that their old honoured religion of Polytheism

(the worship of more than one god) was threatened by the advent of Christianity. Kind Penda plotted with Cadwallon, the Welsh Chieftain, to overthrow Eadwine of Northumbria. Eadwine was eventually slain at Heathfield and King Penda was in control after his victory over Eadwine’s successor Oswald a few years later. Meanwhile Celtic missionaries were active and Peada, King Penda’s son, was won over to Christianity. Northumbria (under its King Oswin) became aggressive and the ultimate fall of Kind Penda proved to be the death-knell of his heathenism. A rapid process of conversion to the Christian Faith followed. Peada succeeded his father as King of Mercia and the geographic area of Mercia made steady progress. Throwing off the Northumbrian yoke in 659 its subjects chose Wulfere, brother of Peada, to be their King. Religious houses grew amid the waters and small islands of the Fens and a monastery was built at Medeshampstede (the homestead in the meadows) – now Peterborough. built at Medeshampstede (the homestead in the meadows) – now Peterborough. That monastery was burnt down by the Danes and a second church was built by King Eadgar. Except for Litchfield, Peterborough can claim to have been the first resting place of Christianity in Central England. The Norman work of Peterborough Cathedral began in 1118 by John of Sais and was second only in importance to Durham Cathedral. The choir was finished in 1143, the nave about 50 years later, the west front c1325. In 1883 the central tower was taken down and then rebuilt under the guidance of architect Sir Gilbert Scott. Among the many treasures of Peterborough Cathedral are the slabs and effigies of Saxon and Norman times – the most noted being the Monks Stone.

This year marks the 900th anniversary of the current building and various events are taking place under ‘Peterborough Celebrates’. One of the major crowd pullers will be the Soyuz space capsule that brought astronaut Tim Peake back to earth after 6 months aboard the International Space Station. It will be exhibited in the Cathedral along with his spacesuit and

the parachute used in the spacecraft’s return to earth from 11 August until 5 November. So, Peterborough can celebrate 5th century settlers to 21st century astronauts!

ooking back, the second half of the 18th century appears semi-stagnant. Hudd's Mill was the point where the Stamford Canal left the river. The River Gwash, which the canal crossed on the level, joined from the north, and the remains of the canal followed the river on its north bank. Uffington followed the old course of the river, first to the south to Tallington and then to the north, while the main course now flowed along the Maxey Cut to Peakirk. The old course consisted of two streams, fed by sluices from the Maxey Cut, which meander to the Deepings while the eastern stream supplied power to Lolham and Maxey mills and the western stream did the same for Tallington Mill. The West Deeping mill, and Molecey's mill, which still retains its seventeenth-century undershot waterwheel, modified in the 19th century to Poncelet’s improved design. It now has the only surviving waterwheel of its type in Lincolnshire. The section crossed by King Street followed the course of a Roman road and crossed the Maxey Cut to the south of the original channels. There, there are a series of 14 arches which comprise Lolham Bridges grouped into five structures to cross the channels in the area. They were funded by

the County of Northamptonshire in the 17th and 18th centuries. The longest span is 16ft (4.9m), and the cutwaters carry inscribed stones recording the County's involvement. Changing the story completely, in 1790 a school was held in the Market Deeping Rectory. The advertisement read:

“Young gentlemen conveniently boarded and taught (on reasonable terms) the English language, Latin and Greek, writing in all Hands, Common Arithmetic, Fractions, Book keeping and Logarithms, mensuration and gauging, Surveying and planning in the neatest manner. Trigonometry, navigation, Algebra, Dialling, Geography and Astronomy with the use of the Globes by the Rev. Ms. Barvis, who having the direction of a large school for the last 10 years, flatters himself, he shall be able to acquit himself to the satisfaction of those Ladies and Gentlemen who may please to favour him with the tuition of their children. The Rectory of Market Deeping is large and commodious and the situation extremely pleasant. The school opens 19th April 1790.” The gentleman was curate as the non-resident Rector lived in York and no doubt his curate would not be overpaid!

Celebrations SUMMER

Celebrate 40 years of Ferry Meadows Country Park this summer

F

erry Meadows Country Park will be hosting a number of special events this summer to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Opened in 1978, Ferry Meadows was designed to meet the increased recreational needs of Peterborough and today the 220 hectare site is well loved for its landscape, facilities and activities. The celebrations planned for the summer include a weekend-long festival, a new trail route for Nene Park, a specially brewed Ferry Meadows ale, all alongside the regular summer events programme. Matthew Bradbury, Chief Executive for Nene Park Trust, which manages Ferry Meadows, said: “We know how much Ferry Meadows Country Park means

to the people who visit and work here, so we wanted to celebrate this landmark anniversary with a series of events to thank everyone for their support over these 40 years. “We will also be looking ahead to the many plans in place to further enhance Nene Park’s offer for an ever-increasing numbers of visitors, to keep involving the community, and to support the rich wildlife we have both at Ferry Meadows and more widely across Nene Park.” The celebratory Ferry Meadows Activity Weekend, will take place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September, with full information revealed in the coming weeks. Ferry Meadows also has a free ‘40 things to do at Ferry Meadows’ booklet available

from the Visitor Centre and both cafes in the Park. These activities include taking a swan pedalo ride on Gunwade Lake, building a home for an animal, and going on a bug hunt, with a special certificate awarded to those who complete all 40.

Celebrate this landmark anniversary with a series of events Further information of the summer’s events will be available on the brand new Nene Park website, www.nenepark.org. uk, and the Trust’s social media channels.

Aspiring to act? Follow in the footsteps of Aaron Richards

T

his month, the Young Actors Company Peterborough began shooting an original feature film: What Are You So Afraid Of, which tackles some difficult subjects such as abuse of trust. We pulled material together based on scenarios I constructed and the result is a screenplay that we are very proud of. We strive for professional-level work and training so that our students have the necessary experience to put their skills into practice whether working inhouse, or on external projects. One of our characters, ’Toby’ is played by Aaron Richards who is known to many fans from the BBC TV series Sherlock for his depiction of the young ‘Mycroft Holmes’ - he’s so well-known in fact, that Aaron was a guest of honour at the recent official Sherlock fan convention: Sherlocked!
