5 wellbeing products to get you through the winter

The days are getting shorter, the skies are getting darker and the air is getting colder. Like many of us, winter tends to be the time of year that we effectively go into hibernation. Sure, the freezing temperatures and lack of sunlight don’t help, but there’s something to be said about the emotional boost that a little self-care can provide. Even when it feels like taking care of yourself has gone out the window, there are some products that can bring small doses of joy and health directly into our daily life. These practical staples will make your winter wellness a priority.

KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY

It’s all well and good adding in tongue scrapers and water flossers, but the easiest way to improve your oral hygiene is to upgrade to an electric toothbrush. The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush can help transform your brushing routine – and your smile –with its four different cleaning modes (clean, white, massage and sensitive). This buy boasts a powerful 40,000-vibrations-per-minute motor, so you’re guaranteed to get a proper clean. Plus, its pearl violet design makes it a statement piece for virtually any bathroom. Perfect for anyone who’s heading off on their travels, the Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush has an impressive battery life of over four weeks when fully charged and comes with a travel cap for easy and hygienic transportation.

DRINK YOUR WAY TO GORGEOUS

The word ‘collagen’ has become almost synonymous with plump skin, long hair and strong nails, explaining why these dietary supplements are popping up everywhere. Adding this trendy beauty ingestible to your daily routine can offer a range of benefits, from improving skin hydration and elasticity to supporting joint health and aiding muscle recovery. Meet your new favourite winter ritual – the Revive Glo Latte Collagen Elixir - White Chocolate . Bovine collagen and coconut milk powder combine to make a fine powder, packed in handy sachets and designed to be mixed with hot water, milk or your preferred milk alternative. There’s no dairy or refined sugar, but the creamy flavouring makes your drink taste like a white chocolate latte. What’s not to love?

BURN BABY BURN

Candles are perfect accompaniments to a long dark evening. Not only do these small marvels add an essential element of warmth and cosiness to any space, they also come in countless styles. We know you’ve probably seen this candle brand all over your Instagram feeds, but trust us, the hype is real on this one. The Okracandle Lemon Candle is a sophisticated take on everyone’s favorite summer fruit – an excellent option if you’re looking for something bright and mood-boosting. Beyond their ambience benefits, these hand-poured, made-to-order candles can also double as eye-catching pieces of decor. Place one on top of your living room credenza for a pop of colour or on your vanity next to your collection of perfumes. Your zen era has arrived.

GO AU NATURAL

For when you want to feel super fresh without resorting to chemicals and synthetics, consider switching to natural deodorant. We’re here to tell you that the new Mitchum Women Natural Power Roll-On - Eucalyptus is well worth the swop. Sometimes natural deodorants are uncomfortable and sticky to wear, but this deo does a great job at absorbing into the skin without discomfort. The rollerball design makes it a breeze to glide across armpits. In addition to smelling like a spa thanks to the subtle eucalyptus scent, this vegan-friendly deodorant is a winner for us in terms of performance. It has gentle ingredients like zinc minerals, bamboo powder and botanical oil extracts. What it doesn’t have is aluminium or ethanol, two common irritants.

Editor-loved Poetry finds to shop right now

We can’t be the only ones who are so ready to welcome winter back again. Sure, she may be a little icy – but from a fashion and home decor POV, she gives us the perfect excuse to shop for some of our favourite seasonal pieces. Since we don’t believe in gatekeeping, we’re here to tell you that Poetry has a new-in section you can’t miss. We love the retailer for being a go-to source for adding an unexpected punch of personality, pattern and colour. And the brand’s latest collection is no exception – you’re spoilt for choice. These are the pieces we’re coveting most.

PUT THIS ON YOUR WEEKEND AGENDA

As if there wasn’t enough tempting us to shop at Poetry already, their brand-new Sea Point flagship has officially raised the bar. Housed in a dreamy pink building that feels more like a lifestyle destination than a store, it’s designed as a ‘third place’ –somewhere between home and work – where you can linger, connect and get inspired. Expect their full fashion and homeware collections, one-off artisanal finds and even a curated café from Kloof Street fave, Our Local. There’s also a first-of-its-kind collab with Style Rotate, offering occasion wear to rent or buy.

SWEATER WEATHER

Winter is full of indulgences, but nothing quite surpasses supremely soft knitwear. We simply can’t resist a statement sweater, and the Siena Knitwear piqued our interest because of the striking colours and quirky pattern. It has a loose, oversized fit that complements jeans or a maxi skirt.

Dewy skin for the win

Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the glowiest of them all?

Glazed-doughnut skin, glass skin, dolphin skin. The limit really doesn’t exist, but nothing beats a glow that looks like it came from within. Now, of course skincare is key for dewy, fresh-looking skin – though in winter, even the most dedicated routine can leave your complexion needing an extra hit of radiance. Between the icy weather, moisture-sapping central heating and the persistent lack of sunshine, it’s no surprise that skin can start to look a little lacklustre. But have no fear – these editor-approved products are your shortcut to that lit-from-within luminosity.

FAUX THE GLOW

Facial tanners are part of our everyday makeup routine. We reapply them every few days to keep the glow alive, but as we approach the chillier season, they provide the perfect base for a radiant makeup look. Want the easiest, quickest and most convenient option? Enter: the Azure Tan Plumping Face Tan Serum . Simple to dispense from the pipette, this multi-tasking serum packed with hyaluronic acid gives you full control over your tan. The more drops, the darker the tan – you’ll only need to use between four and five a day. Be sure to apply the formula evenly across your face, neck and décolleté. The glow this cocktail gives feels like skincare, making the bronzing hue it leaves behind seem like a bonus. It’s hard not to be an Azure Tan fan girl, TBH. R679 from Azure Tan

START FRESH WITH EXFOLIATION

To get that dewy makeup finish in winter, it all starts with proper exfoliation and hydration before any makeup goes on. Prepping the skin is key – whether you’re after a glassy glow or a soft, natural sheen. Exfoliating first removes dead skin cells and helps serums and moisturisers absorb better, allowing your products to really work their magic. Formulated with both glycolic and lactic acid, the REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask offers one of the most effective facial-like results. And in our humble opinion, it’s arguably the best chemical exfoliator around. This gel-like AHA mask is seriously potent, so expect a mild tingle –plus dolphin-soft skin with noticeably minimised pores. Did we mention that it’s also vegan and cruelty-free?

R880 from REN, Woolworths, Clicks, Cosmetology and SkinMiles

CATCH THE LIGHT JUST RIGHT

A go-to trick for achieving that dewy skin glow is using an iridescent product along the cheekbones. It can be subtly blended with your fingertips or swept on with a brush for a high-blend finish. Liquid highlighters are a must. We love applying them to the high points of the face: The bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow and sometimes even on eyelids and lips to add a gorgeous sheen to these areas. The new Wet n Wild Mega Glo Glow In Love Radiance Liquid feels silky smooth on the skin and stays on for hours. Squeeze on one dot for slight shine or apply three to four for jaw-dropping glimmer. We find that blending this in with our fingers gives the most second-skin finish. Big plus: You can also use it underneath foundation in lieu of primer.

QUENCH THAT SKIN

As the colder months roll in, our skin – once glistening and radiant – can suddenly turn on us, leaving dehydration and a lack of luminosity in its wake. The good news is that there are plenty of moisturisers made for this very reason. Dry and oily skin types need hydration – especially in winter. The trick is to find what suits your skin and routine. You can always trust the science and expertise that go into any one of Lamelle’s soothing yet efficacious formulas. The Lamelle Serra Soothing Cream is no exception. It’s brimming with all the ingredients you need to boost the skin’s barrier and feed it from within – from ceramides to panthenol – and offers a hydrating veil of protection for your precious dermis. Safe for irritation-prone skin, it’s also fragrance-free.

BRING ON BIGGER, BRIGHTER EYES

Most current beauty trends – including ‘cloud skin’, heatless curls and all the fruit-inspired makeup looks that have gained popularity this year – begin on TikTok. The recent craze for waterline eyeliner pencil is no exception. Fans of Revlon’s ColorStay eyeliners in classic shades like black and brown should certainly grab its new brightening shade. You can’t go wrong with the Revlon ColorStay Multi-Liner - High Point to accentuate the inner corners and brow bones too. It brightens the eyes and by default makes them look more awake. The creamy formula glides on smoothly, making it suitable for daily use. The ColorStay Multi-Liners are a must-have for a travel makeup bag, as they’re designed with the eyes, lips and face in mind.

CUSHION YOUR POUT WITH A HYDRATION HIT

Juicy, glossy lips are one of the biggest makeup looks of 2025. Versatile and easy to use, lip oil – gloss’s much cooler, low-fuss sister – is really having its moment. Looking for a lip oil that will smooth even the driest of lips? Say no more. The new NUXE Rêve de Miel Honey Lip Care combines the brand’s signature lavender honey from Provence with organic camelina oil to keep your pout ultra-supple. Many lip oils add temporary moisture, but this one provides some of the most lasting hydration out of all the options we’ve tested. While the formula is yellow-gold in the tube, it’s actually clear upon application and has a sweet honey scent that makes it smell just as good as it feels. Smooth it on over your lip colour, or layer it with a balm for a glasslike finish.

DAB, BLEND AND BLUR

If dewy skin is your thing, let your beauty sponge be your BFF. Unlike brushes, they don’t soak up much product, so your glow-boosting foundation and creamy concealer last way longer – think months, not weeks. When used damp, a sponge helps melt everything into your skin for that fresh, lit-fromwithin look. Even setting powder won’t dim your shine – just press it in gently with a sponge to lock things down without losing that dewy finish. With so many shapes and textures out there, there’s a sponge for every glow-getter’s routine. The Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is a great first foray when you’re used to using brushes. The angled edge allows easy access to smaller areas, like the undereye, when applying concealer.

CREATE A CREASE-FREE CANVAS

Are fine lines and creases around your eyes getting in the way of a flawless finish? In the dry winter months, when your makeup needs to work overtime to keep skin looking fresh and hydrated, a smooth under-eye base is essential. While eye creams and eye serums aspire to tackle these issues, serums tend to be more potent and better suited for deep treatment. A firming formula that improves smoothness and eases puffiness in minutes? Sign us up. Despite a near-weightless feel, the Gatineau Defi Lift Firming Eye Contour Serum is filled with a bounty of active ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin to awaken the eye area and firm fine lines. As the skin around the eyes is delicate, gently tap the serum in with your ring finger.

R1,525 from Orleans Cosmetics and Woolworths

GO FOR SUBTLE BROWS AND LASHES

On eyes, keep it simple. For brows, all you have to do is fluff ’em up or lightly fill them in. Next, curl lashes and go in with a mascara that lengthens and adds volume, but not distractingly so. There’s volumising mascara, and then there’s the RVB LAB Give Me More Mascara Even though it creates a ton of volume, the result isn’t clumpy. The formula contains fibres that help elongate your fringe, plus nourishing ingredients like seed oils and vitamin E to encourage thickness (no growth serum necessary). It also features a slim, curved wand, which lifts the lashes while grabbing each one. Removing excess mascara from the wand prior to application will achieve a fresher look. We love how it holds up through a day of wear – no raccoon eyes in sight.

R595 from Orleans Cosmetics

PERFECT THE BASE

Those with very dry skin might appreciate a facial oil to lock in moisture atop their usual cream, or even mixed into foundation. Makeup artists have found it helpful to mix a few drops of oil into their foundations just before application to noticeably improve the quality of the makeup – and the skin beneath. By adding the Sisley Paris Black Rose Precious Face Oil to your foundation, you’ll be using less product than normal and will find it a whole lot easier to blend it in for a natural look. Sisley Paris is synonymous with luxury skincare, and its lightweight oil feels as indulgent as it looks. Like all of the brand’s products, it’s stacked with heavy-hitting active ingredients. The eponymous black rose is the real star of the show. We can’t get enough of it.

Winter-warming spa treatments to give your skin life

Name a better feeling than slipping into the fluffiest white robe and slippers, putting your phone on silent and being thoroughly taken care of? Our Cape Winelands spas are so dreamy, you don’t have to travel far to find exactly this kind of escapism. If the long, cold winter is showing in a lacklustre complexion when you look in the mirror, use it as an excuse to treat yourself to some feel-good therapies that will benefit the skin. Innovative, intuitive and supremely skilled at supercharging complexions, these spas practise alchemy to leave you sumptuously aglow.

LYFTAAL

There’s an almost religious devotion to the Lyftaal principle. It’s about working with the body’s natural intelligence, wild and free. Discreetly tucked away just off Main Road in Paarl, owner and founder, skin goddess Jani de Koker, awaits. Lyftaal is equal parts Instagram-worthy interiors, thoughtful treatments, considered spaces and sustainable practices, all designed so guests leave feeling holistically better than when they arrived. The minimalist decor, pale sage and cream colour palette, light wood, natural textures and splashes of foliage is entirely what your city-fatigued mind and body needs. Somehow, even the air smells cleaner and breathes easier here. With winter settling over Cape Town, now’s the perfect time to book yourself in for a revitalising face treatment, complete with impossibly soft towels and heated beds. The Esse Experience Facial (R1,000) is a solid pick. We’ve developed a bit of a crush on probiotic-based skincare line Esse. The brand’s delicious, vegan-friendly products are gentle (so they’re good for sensitive skin) but effective (the glow when you look in the mirror afterwards is megawatt). From maintaining a healthy bacterial balance in the skin to treating flare-ups and breakouts of all sizes, a probiotic-laced facial actually works. The treatment begins with discussing your skin at length with one of Lyftaal’s expert therapists who’ll

take a long, hard look before coming up with a bespoke solution. Your skin is adequately prepped with the double-cleansing method, setting the tone for what is a deeply relaxing and almost sinfully indulgent facial. This is followed with a gentle chemical exfoliation, a long luxurious steam and an extremely thorough extraction. All entirely worthwhile for the grand finale of a gloriously nourishing mask and toxin-draining massage (we dare you not to drift off to sleep). Once the 60-minute treatment is finished, you’ll be guided to the sleepily lit lounge full of plushy, oversized day beds. Lyftaal has a new devotee who vows to return.

VERGENOEGD LÖW BOUTIQUE HOTEL & SPA

Even the simplest weekend propositions are increasingly luxurious. Take, for example, Vergenoegd Löw Boutique Hotel & Spa, which mixes wine tastings, farm-to-table dining and spa treatments with lodgings on a Cape Dutch estate dating back to 1696. It’s a hedonistic paradise and a peaceful wellness break rolled into one. The latest addition is a spa featuring two couple treatment rooms and a full menu of massages, facials and beauty treatments. All treatments can be booked individually or as a couple experience. Set within the estate’s carefully preserved slave quarters and former dairy beside the historic homestead, the splendour of the interiors is immediate. The reception area is exactly as you’d expect from Vergenoegd Löw: Lavish, comfortable and full of vintage finds (think ornamental blue and white china) with the right amount of modern touches (a scattering of neutral furniture contrasted with vases of dried flowers). There’s no rush, no time pressures – you’re simply encouraged to enjoy some good ol’ R&R. Stepping inside the treatment room, you’re welcomed by candles flickering light softly around the room and a fire crackling away. We can highly endorse the

Hottentots Holland Honeybush Facial (R995) inspired by the countryside backdrop, using natural, botanical products by Kalahari Skincare over a blissful hour. Employing a series of nourishing cleansing techniques, gentle exfoliation, masks and massage, the therapist tends meticulously to your skin while guiding you through the best approach to naturally and non-intrusively care for your complexion. While the final mask works its magic, a soothing foot massage is performed – leaving your soles feeling almost as indulged as your newly glowing cheeks. With life’s stresses melted away, this hidden gem will be firmly on your speed dial. To maintain the mood, do feast post-spa at Geuwels. Expect hearty breakfasts and share plates with perfectly paired wines and charming service.

SEASON The of indulgence

Where to eat in Cape Town this winter

To say Cape Town can be brutal during the winter is an understatement. When the winds are whirling, it’s easy to say no way to leaving the comfort of your home for the blistering cold. But there’s allure in embracing the season and its signature advantage: Eating and drinking robustly and guiltfree because, well, you’ve got to keep warm! As we embark upon the winter season, here’s a roundup of the tastiest menus in town – all tried, tested and approved by our team. A cosy cocktail, hearty meal and decadent dessert await as you sit out the chilly temps happily.

THE JORDAN RESTAURANT with Marthinus Ferreira

Views over the leafy farmland and single estate vineyard might be one of The Jordan Restaurant’s main drawcards, but it’s certainly not the only one. When a bowl of butter-poached crayfish arrives at a sun-kissed table, conversation stops. Senses previously tickled by the sight of ducklings and bees pollinating the garden momentarily shift to the intoxicating aroma of smoked duck. The medley of land and sea swims in a light, silky tarragon velouté, exquisitely balanced with lentil and corn fricassee and a soft quail egg. More familiar, but equally delicious? The pommes dauphine set atop a base of brilliant green spinach purée – little mouthfuls of mashed potato, lightened with choux pastry and then deep-fried – hidden beneath a jumble of shaved Karoo Crumble, spinach and truffle salad, sultanas and pine nuts. Honest, flavoursome cooking underpins The Jordan Restaurant’s raison d’être; an apt term given head chef Marthinus Ferreira’s mostly French-leaning techniques. In 2022, the former DW Eleven-13 owner-chef left Joburg for the Stellenbosch Winelands and made The Jordan Restaurant

his own. His exploration of native ingredients within a fine-dining prism runs through a three-course set menu or full tasting experience. Beverages are Jordan-focused. Larger plates range between roasted kabeljou alongside a quenelle of tomato fondue, a seaweed arancini ball, pickled cucumber, mustard seeds and a wasabi beurre blanc, perhaps, or springbok loin cooked sous vide served with soused beetroot, butternut labneh, broccoli, a barley croquette and venison jus. There’s obvious thought paid to texture, too, in a dish of grilled mushroom accompanied by cauliflower purée, burnt onion, leeks, daikon, gratin dauphinoise and red wine velouté. The standing ovation is best saved for the chocolate crémeux dressed up with a chocolate sable, blood orange gel, warm orange curd sauce and passion fruit sorbet for freshness.

YATAI RAMEN BAR

Japan’s number-one comfort dish has started making it big in South Africa. Seasoned broth, chewy noodles, tender slices of meat and perfectly cooked soft-boiled eggs – trust us when we say that a hot bowl of ramen can do warming wonders on a chilly day. For one of Cape Town’s better bowls, hit this new CBD favourite. Yatai Ramen Bar is known for its shoyu ramen (made with a classic soy-based broth) and rich, creamy tonkotsu (a pork bone broth simmered for hours) – and it does pretty mean speciality cocktails and small plates as well. Set in an intimate space beneath sister restaurant Nikkei, the interiors are low-lit, dark and atmospheric with flashes of pink cherry blossoms. Everything is an experience – even descending to the night-clubby bathroom. By night, the decks are fired up and you’ll get Japanese flavours

to a beat (a very tempting proposition). You’ll want to try everything here. Think: Generously stuffed prawn dumplings, Cape bream tartare, miso-glazed eggplant, chicken tsukune ... and among the most impeccably made ‘Kyoto Kiri’ watermelon cocktails in all of town. Our suggestion? Opt for the Kyoto Set Menu. It’s all about zingy natural colours and mouth-watering, unforgettable taste eruptions. The flesh for any carpaccio must be spanking fresh. Here, fresh lobster is topped with yuzu amarillo vinaigrette, fermented chilli sauce and red vein sorrel, giving the sweet lobster meat a fiery, salty kick. The katsu sando is something so luxurious, so mischievously decadent – using wagyu MS 9+ sandwiched between pillowy milk bread. Their signature dish, the wagyu truffle shoyu ramen, is also legendary. This soupy creation bathes strands of noodles, marbled meat, red cabbage slaw and a marinated egg in umami depth to delight both truffle and wagyu fans alike. As you’re feeling increasingly full (but eyes perennially wide), the white chocolate and ginger mousse with sake-poached pears and elderflower will end things on a perfect note – light and fresh.

QUOIN ROCK WINE LOUNGE

It would be perfectly legitimate to visit Quoin Rock Wine Estate just for the wine. Schalk Opperman is a talented winemaker who produces impressively elegant, clean-lined wines at this winery set in the Knorhoek Valley on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. You could taste, buy and leave happy, but to miss the Wine Lounge aspect of the equation would be short-changing yourself. When you arrive to the hill it’s perched on, you’re immediately swept off your feet as you look out onto the verdant landscape. Entering the space, it’s clear the stylish barcum-casual-diner is no afterthought. Artsy interiors complement the ultra-modern bones of the building, with white brick walls, neutral furnishings, unique light fixtures, jewel tones and brass finishes. The double-volume space is flooded with natural light and offers one of the best views in Stellenbosch (made more dramatic by misty vines). It also has an excellent menu of wine-friendly food – much of it cooked over an open flame, all of it designed with flexibility in mind. Head chef Paul Prinsloo sources ingredients locally and the carefully curated team serve lunch with regional warmth. A must, however, is the Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) tasting. Tiny bubbles,

floral notes and crystal flutes – their blanc de blancs and brut rosé are exceptional. Also, don’t miss the punchy Saldanha Bay oysters with MCC onions, mustard seeds and mizuna to help take your tasting to the next level. Larger dishes emerge from the kitchen with a similar elevated simplicity. Exhibit A is Norwegian salmon teamed with roasted beetroot, carrot purée, horseradish cream sauce and a side salad. It’s served seared and looks beautiful. Exhibit B is a big-flavoured beef fillet, perfectly cooked to medium rare and paired with an exemplary glass of Quoin Rock Simonsberg Blend. For those going the full dine, the cheese platter (camembert, 18-month aged cheddar, six-month Boerenkaas and parmesan) will close the meal very successfully.

SÓTANO

When the winter sun is shining, there’s nothing quite like tucking into the catch of the day, overlooking crashing waves with the hearty squall of seagulls overhead. Luckily for us, Cape Town has no shortage of seaside restaurants when you fancy a whiff of salty sea air. Sitting proudly opposite the red-and-white striped Green Point Lighthouse, Sótano serves up some of the best seafood and sushi in laidback surroundings. It’s the perfect setting for relaxed-but-refined plates seasoned by the saltwater breeze as they drift through the sunny open dining room. In the summer, this place is as buzzy as a honeypot, with sun-kissed groups jumping right into Aperols and Mediterranean-esque small plates to share. As the temperatures drop, they’ll wrap you up in blankets, so you’ll happily stay here for hours. The new menu – an enticing blend of Cape seafood and Mediterranean flavours – is designed to suit a range of occasions. There’s plenty for pescatarians, carnivores and vegetarians alike. Wine and cocktail lists match the approach. The Mussel Monger oysters with a mignonette dressing are unmissable. Baked feta prawns, a deliciously light and creamy combination, is another crowd favourite. We’ve been dreaming about it since we took the first bite. The garlic, lemon and herb butter is best mopped up with

chunks of warm ciabatta. Other musttry dishes include the chorizo-stuffed Patagonian calamari, served on a harissa-spiked Napoletana sauce with squid tentacles and edamame beans, along with the plump lamb koftas, vibrant with roasted garlic yoghurt and chimichurri. Your belly will delight in the flavours. What really works here is the pace. You’re never left without a drink or food, and waitstaff are constantly tempting you to try more dishes. Come mains, feast on as many sushi rolls as you can eat – butter-soft salmon roses, delicate rainbow rolls and tempura prawn California rolls with a judicious drizzle of teriyaki sauce. Just sublime. 121 Beach Road, Mouille Point 021 433 1757

Visit Chuini Zanzibar Lodge this winter for a sun-soaked escape

If the impending chilly season triggers your flight instinct, consider a getaway to the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Also known as the Spice Islands, Zanzibar is a place of contrasts: Its bustling capital, Stone Town, alive with historic landmarks, labyrinthine streets and air that’s thick with the heady scent of spices, and its coast dotted with sleepy fishing villages along white coral sand beaches and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Here, on a secluded 1.5-hectare property edging Unguja Island, Chuini Zanzibar Lodge is a sweet retreat for a much-needed hit of vitamin D.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ZANZIBAR

The dry season from June to October is the most pleasant time to visit, with temperatures averaging 25°C and minimal rainfall. This period also coincides with Tanzania’s safari high season, making Zanzibar a popular post-safari destination. In contrast, the long rains in April and May bring heavy downpours (up to 401mm), leading to seasonal closures and a slower pace of life. While the rains ease the humidity left from the hot East African summer, they make travel less ideal.

LOCATION

Location, location, location – that’s the appeal of Chuini Zanzibar Lodge. Zanzibar is a frantic destination that requires repeat visits to appreciate and understand its restless rhythm. Landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport can feel a bit hectic, and the drive through the crowded streets, past crumbling architecture and honking dala-dalas, can make you question – if you’re arriving from congested urban streets – if you’ve just traded one form of traffic for another. But once you enter the grounds of Chuini Zanzibar Lodge, it’s a different story.

Chuini Zanzibar Lodge is situated in a peaceful location on the west coast, 12km north of Stone Town. From the airport, visitors take a 30-minute drive to reach the lodge. Compared to other luxe hotels on the island – many of which can be a 90-minute drive away in heavy traffic – this alone could be a reason to stay. It does mean that you’re further from some of the island’s most popular beaches, such as Nungwi Beach and Paje Beach. However, with a setting such as this, off the beaten track and away from the crowds, many check in and simply stay put. The lodge’s grand wooden doors open in a wide welcome of true Swahili tradition. Its local architecture style boasts the ancient ruins of Chuini Palace, built for the Zanzibar Sultan, Sayyid Bargash, in 1873. Chuini Zanzibar Lodge is blessed with an abundance of lush greenery and natural shade, including tall coconut palms and hibiscus trees with their beautiful cup-shaped bright red flowers. The air is perfumed with frangipani. Look closely, and you may spot a greyish green Zanzibar day gecko or two – the lucky amphibians that have one of the plushest homes around.

THE ROOMS

The 13 thatched rooms and one villa are all standalone bungalows cooled by ceiling fans and air-conditioners. The Deluxe Sea View Rooms, where we stayed, exude beachy minimalism and are just steps away from an idyllic, sunset-facing beach. There’s a sliver of an ocean view, but we didn’t need more than that. A level above, the Superior Rooms and Junior Suites are designed with privacy in mind. In the two-bedroom Villa with dramatic cliffside views, guests can expect even more space. Entry-level Deluxe Garden View Rooms also have a generous balcony. Regardless of the accommodation type, the interiors manage to feel spacious, stylish and right for the setting. And nothing adds a sense of place quite like the salty ocean breeze that ensues. Pale woods, hanging lights, natural woven-grass rugs and cool cement floors decorate the whitewashed rooms and private

terraces (the perfect spot to have your morning coffee). Mosquito nets add a hint of airy romance, but make sure to slather yourself in as much repellent as possible and bring antiitch cream for the inevitable bites. Considering this is a Newmark Hotels & Reserves property, understated luxury and premium amenities like tea and coffee-making facilities, a small fridge, international plugs, an electronic safe, bathrobes and slippers, coconut and lime shower goodies as well as amenity kits are a given. It’s no surprise, then, that Chuini Zanzibar Lodge is attracting a younger, cooler breed of sun-worshipper. Saturated with screen time, many of us are looking for ways to disconnect. Wi-Fi is free, though it can be spotty in some rooms (a good thing). It’s more reliable in the common areas (also a good thing).

FOOD AND DRINK

On the food front, Chuini Zanzibar Lodge has a reputation for delicious interpretations of local cuisine. The lodge offers flexible meal plans, including bed and breakfast, half-board and full-board. We recommend opting for the half-board option, which covers both breakfast and dinner. Due to the lodge’s secluded location, there are no restaurants nearby. However, this isn’t an issue – the à la carte menu is varied, and hospitality standards are high. You really don’t ever have to leave the property. The real star of a stay here is dining in an open-air dining room called Sea Breeze Restaurant & Bar, the main place to eat overlooking a private beach. Breakfast is a treat, especially the freshly squeezed ginger shots, tropical fruits and eggs benedict pancakes. During the day – and on warm nights – tables are set outside, within eyeline of white dhows on a blue ocean and earshot of lapping waves. The emphasis is on fresh seafood and produce, both of which are caught and grown on the island itself,

while the wine list features some of South Africa’s finest wines. Popular dishes include tuna tartare, harissa fish tacos, seafood tagliatelle, octopus risotto, and a plate of fish and seafood tempura served with green papaya salad that we’re still thinking about. The dreamy courtyard, dripping with magenta bougainvillea and filled with birdsong, is a very lovely spot for a pre-dinner passionfruit paloma. Breakfast is served in-room for when you want to lie low the morning after sampling the bartender’s magic. For dinner, order the seafood platter – a highlight of our stay – to feast on all-local lobster, jumbo prawns, octopus and calamari paired with lime butter, hand-cut chips and garden vegetables.

ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES

At Chuini Zanzibar Lodge, some of the greatest pleasures are the simplest ones. Waking up at dawn and strolling along an empty beach; lounging alongside the infinity pool as the dhows drift by; watching local fisherman hauling up daily catches; soaking in the knee-trembling sunset views. And this is really the essence of what makes it so wonderful. While the beach at Chuini Zanzibar Lodge isn’t ideal for swimming due to its rocky and coral-strewn shoreline, guests can cool off in the lodge’s two outdoor pools. What it lacks in swim-friendly waters, it makes up for in character – fishing boats in vibrant, contrasting colours rest on the sand, creating a truly authentic African coastal scene. The Asili Spa (asili translates to ‘nature’ in Swahili), though modest in size, offers a rich array of experiences. Try the signature Hakuna Matata package – a full-body exfoliation, followed by a Healing Earth coffee, cinnamon and orange body wrap. The experience is then completed with an energising full-body massage. For those eager to venture out, Chuini Zanzibar Lodge arranges excursions that span snorkelling, scuba diving, big game fishing and sunset cruises aboard a luxury catamaran. Low-key and casual, the staff are some of the warmest, loveliest people we’ve met lately. Chuini Zanzibar Lodge’s location also means guests enjoy the best of both worlds: Scenic ocean views and easy access to Stone Town, a UNESCO-listed historic capital. On the beach, you’ll likely come across locals who provide guided tours. The winding streets are chock-full of history, so you’d benefit from a tour guide. A week or so here, and you may even be ready to deal with the dropping temperature back home.

COUNTRYSIDE & Coast

The best hotels for a stylish winter stay

For some of us, winter is a time to turn inward – a chance to snuggle up at home in our reading nooks and quiet spaces. For others, it’s a moment to pick up where summer left off and explore South Africa in their go-to winter jacket, armed with our editor-approved travel essentials and plenty of lip balm. Whether you can’t get enough of long, coastal walks or resist the allure of roaring fires and big juicy reds, making the most of winter’s cosy charms offers tranquility and a chance to reconnect with nature. We’ve handpicked the design hotels to book now.

EDITOR’S PICK:

The Residence

at MAISON

Craggy mountains rise and fall all around the village of Franschhoek, squirrelled away in a fertile valley not far from Stellenbosch. It’s not like you need an excuse to visit. Revelling in winter’s creature comforts – cosy nooks, crackling fireplaces, bubble baths, underfloor heating and the deepest, darkest fullbodied red wines – really shouldn’t take much convincing. But for a substantial group of family or friends, there aren’t many fully-serviced villas of this scale and spec in the area. Combining the autonomy and relaxed ambiance of a private house with unostentatious luxury and outstanding service, The Residence at MAISON sleeps eight with living areas and outside space in spades. This is a clean, modernist take on Franschhoek as seen through the eyes of Seb Ackerstaff and Jessie Verdonschot, the duo behind ultra-luxury bathroom brand COCOON, who took over MAISON Estate in mid-2023. The main house offers four bedrooms, but when combined with The Stables Villa and The Botanical Suite – which have two and one bedrooms respectively – the estate can host up to 14 guests. Everything about the surroundings is authentic. You can explore the expansive grounds which feature ancient oaks,

olive groves and citrus trees punctuated by blousy heads of agapanthus and thick hedgerows speckled white with wild garlic. Orange tractors blur into the immaculate symmetry of vineyards. Miniature Shetland ponies and a donkey for company bounce around within enclosures, while chickens roam freely. Nearby, the garden grows herbs and vegetables that go into the dishes at the seasonally led restaurant, Chefs Warehouse at MAISON. Once inside, you’ll find neutrals (browns, greys, creams) and lots of texture. Free-flowing shapes that mirror the beauty and complexity of nature create a fluid space where the boundaries between inside and outside are blurred. There are hardwood floors, shaggy carpets, low leather sofas, nubbly linens in earthy colours and lightbulbs cocooned in wicker. Everything flows together – from the weathered pieces to the cushions, baskets and artefacts. This former farmhouse has been transformed into generous kitchen and dining spaces leading onto wisteriacovered pergolas. In the summer, they’re best marvelled at from the 25-metre lap pool with a glass of something chilled to hand. With a communal table to enjoy a long breakfast delivered to your villa, you can easily never feel like leaving. Mornings start

with a spread of everything you could wish for and more. Fresh fruit, homemade granola and local yoghurt, chia pudding, pain au chocolat, waffles, cheeses and cured meats alongside breakfast classics such as avocado toast and potato rosti with poached eggs. Seb and Jessie have made sure there are all the bits and bobs a spoiled guest might expect – think USB outlets, Wi-Fi, Spotify Connect and several wide-screen HD TVs with Netflix – as well as a Nespresso machine, a well-stocked fridge and a fully kitted-out kitchen. All rooms have either mountain or garden views and balance seclusion with a feeling of being part of a larger whole. The master suite definitely deserves a separate mention. Deeply spacious and high-ceilinged, it boasts an enormous bed, an open-plan lounge and a walk-in closet. But as striking as the rooms are, the bathrooms are really the star. The master bathroom has a golden aura with natural stone, brushed gold, dual rainfall showerheads, a sunken bathtub, double vanities, heated floors and a private plunge pool. A serene sanctuary. If you’re inspired to recreate any of this back at home, you can shop COCOON’s bathroom collections online.

TURBINE HOTEL & SPA

Wedged between indigenous forest and coastline, the idyllic town of Knysna isn’t just a pretty face with its tree-lined streets and Victorian houses. Here, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafes, galleries, and clothing and craft shops galore. While most tourists are directed towards Knysna Waterfront, Thesen Island offers a level of tranquility not found in more popular spots. To truly leave your troubles behind, a trip to the Turbine Hotel & Spa will do the trick. This iconic 26-bedroom hotel is a sanctuary of stillness that celebrates its industrial heritage on Thesen Island. Once a functioning power station, the superstylish hotel retains original machinery and piping as part of its eclectic interior design. The goal? To inspire a slower pace of life, disconnection from the outside world and a chance to enjoy Knysna for exactly what it is: A protected natural environment. The Turbine Hotel & Spa has drawn on everything that makes the island unique – from its Knysna Lagoon waters to its laidback atmosphere – for its interiors.

The overall colour palette is fresh and crisp for the most part, with flashes of colour like aquamarine, chartreuse, vivid red or charcoal. There’s a Boomerfriendly level of comfort that’s sometimes missing in contemporary hotels: Ample storage, unobtrusive TVs, large makeup mirrors and kitchenettes in some rooms. Bathrooms – white-tiled, no-fuss elegance – are stocked with local Charlotte Rhys toiletries. The infinity pool is a major draw, but even when it’s damp and out of season, there’s an indescribable romance to holing up in bed, living off room service and gazing out at the misty canals. Evenings are glamorous affairs, which might involve an espresso martini in the Gastro Pub, before venturing downstairs to the candlelit Island Café for freshly shucked oysters and linefish of the day – not to mention the best prawn aglio olio nero (squid-ink spaghetti packed with plump prawns, lemon, garlic, herbs and parmesan). It’s immaculately run and much loved by locals. Breakfast can be found here too, and includes healthy options like banana spinach green smoothies and homemade granola with seasonal fruits, yoghurt and raw honey as well as eggs benedict and flapjacks. For those looking to properly indulge, head to The Turbine Spa for a one-hour stress-relieving massage.
