Editor’s Message

A

rchitecture and Interior design is not just about arranging furniture or painting colours on walls, it’s about manifesting comfort and pleasure in an environment sheltered from the world at large. The question I asked myself as I put this together was, as an architect how do I help people to achieve this? The answer is what you will find in this edition. Modernism with a natural theme is trending in interior design, Women are now known as the invisible leaders and they are also trending. We took advantage of this and came out with a different and a new scene catalogue. Thus the theme modernism. This edition sought to tell the missing chapters in the architecture story; Architectural journalism and Women in Architecture. Thus we profiled 2 strong women in the architectural profession Nana Akua Birmeh, one of Ghana's finest uprising lady architects and myself, an architect by profession and first to pursue architectural journalism in Ghana. As we always do, this edition didn’t leave out all the answers for your home. Think about the most pleasant room you’ve never encountered—not the most expansive or expensive, but the most serene and welcoming. You will find it in here. As well as the DIY’s, the lifestyle section on food, fitness, tech. and a new feature on travel. You will love it. Enjoy every column. We have a pool of ideas in here for you.

Confident Colors

Comfortable Colors

YELLOWS

Yes, painting your floor lemon yellow is a risk, but don't you feel happier just looking at this room? Bright accent pieces – like the soft yellow console, energizes this room’s muted gray walls. Sunny rooms are trending again. Yellows, from pale butters to dark mustard, are cropping up everywhere.

Composed Colors

GREENS

On the color front, sophisticated hues are poised to take center stage this 2017. The paint company has divided its selections into three palettes — Confident, Composed, and Comfortable and if they are any indication, we'll be drawing decor inspiration from our personalities in the years ahead. Creative, social types will be drawn to the confident palette, defined by dusky blues, spicy reds and lime greens, designed to captivate your attention. Then there's the composed palette. Its earthy greens and taupes will be a go-to for traditionalists looking to create a contemporary space. And it's all about pale pastels in the comfortable range, characterized by light pinks, blues, and yellows that make the smallest of spaces pop. Its muted shades are ideal for introverts who want to make their first foray into accent colors. We've already seen some of these shades make waves this year, so if you need some help imagining how they might play out in your own space, look no further. 18

SCENE CATALOGUE

One of the most soothing colours to the human eye, green adds the ability to add personality and peacefulness to a place.

BLUES It is a calming color, great for using in bedrooms and bathrooms. It is useful for children’s bedrooms as they can simply alter the color of the accents and accessories as they get older and change the way blue looks. For example, blue and butter yellow when they are babies, blue and mint green for toddlers, blue and orange for young kids, blue and white for high school kids. You can go as far as your imagination.

GREYS What's the best way to kick traditional style up a notch? Paint your space a rich color like this dark gray. In this case, the texture of the wall softens the solemn shade.Black built-ins are popping up everywhere lately.

PINKS Looks like Rose Quartz isn’t going anywhere. The ultra feminine shade accentuates a space’s natural light.

VIOLETS Lighter shades of purple are in vogue, too. Consumers now embrace the middle ground between masculine and feminine, young and old, and work and leisure. Violet reflects that middle ground.

WHITES If sunlight is hard to come by, fake it via paint color. Not every room can have a dozen windows. When there’s only one, like in the dining room of this Spanish-style home, you have to emphasize it.

BUILT-IN STORAGE

Managing

Built-in storage always comes in clutch because your furniture can serve a dual purpose, blending style and function. Talk about an efficient use of space!

YOUR SPACE By Dexel Sagoe Moses

Space defines the whole area you want to design, so paying particular attention to the space you have means you’ll be able to make it look and feel perfect just the way you like it! Managing your space is essential to comfortable living. You’ll realize this as cleaning becomes faster, and you’re genuinely able to enjoy the space you have-whether big or small. Use these hacks when it comes to managing your living space with mirrors, in-built storage and avoiding clutter. Regular re-organizing also helps to avoid clutter so you can be constantly proud of what you took your time to set-up.

MIRRORS

Mirrors generally enhance the space with natural light, and they also make the space appear larger. This is a plus for small spaces. You could create the illusion of more space by strategically placing your mirrors.

GET RID OF CLUTTER

One major way of solving this is putting things back immediately after use, getting your space back to its original beauty. Yes, it’s easy to fall in love with any space over and over again if you clean up regularly.

WINE, COFFEE & MOST OTHER FOODS Expert says: Blot the stain, and rinse with club soda. If needed, brush the spot with soapy water and rinse. Did it work? Better than we ever thought. 8 out of 10.

How to Remove STAINS from carpets By Abena Anima Adjei DARK-COLORED FOODS (LIKE CHOCOLATE) Expert says: Scrape off what you can. Mix one part soap and four parts water, and apply with a sponge. Rinse with lukewarm water. Did it work? Completely! 10 out of 10 stars.

FATTY OR GREASY FOODS (LIKE PIZZA) Expert says: Scrape off with a knife, then layer paper towels on top of the stain. Turn your iron on lowest heat, and iron the paper towels to lift the grease. Apply a mix of white vinegar, soap and lukewarm water, then rinse. Did it work? Totally. 10 out of 10.

NAIL POLISH Expert says: Dip a rag in clear-colored acetone, and use it to blot the stain. Did it work? Yes, but not enough. There was plenty of nail polish on the rag but a LOT left on the carpet when we were done. 3 out of 10.

COFFEE Expert says: Dry the spot by blotting with a dry white towel. If there is a substantial amount of spillage, make sure you are not spreading the stain even more by changing cloths as they become saturated with the beverage. Try the mixture of vinegar, water, and a gentle, non-bleach detergent first with the spritzer method, rinse, and repeat.

Futuristic interior design Although many designers take great pleasure in drawing on the past, particularly mid-century modern elements and even classical, opulent styles of royalty, it is the designers that reach into the future that are creating the next generation of style. They feature inventive elements that are less science fiction and more cutting edge. Futuristic furniture defines one of the most spectacular trends in home decorating and furnishing, creating interior design and decor for people to live, work, rest, eat and have fun in the furniture. Modern furniture demonstrates popular interior trends today and allow to see new developments in contemporary furniture concepts that may become major interior trends in home decorating and furnishing for the future.

The white, hollow chair is a particularly futuristic element, celebrating negative space while still offering a comfortable place to sit.

Not all futuristic designs incorporate the needs of families – but this one does. Adding oversized decals from the Smurfs, this playful kids room is unique, colorful, and still fits within the overall design scheme of the future home.

4 types of futuristic furniture

However small your space, a dining table is not an impossible thought. Round tables are functional in small rooms and they work so well because they have no corners and can fit enough people. Even in an average sized space, a round table can fit more people so consider making that switch from a rectangular to a round table to fit the futuristic theme.

What are you drawn to immediately you enter a room? How does it make you feel? Accent furniture is a piece of furniture that stands out in the space to create emphasis, excitement and add life to the space. It is usually a color that stands out from the rest.

We aspire to be defined not by gender, but by rather our talent, competency and extraordinary perspective as design professionals.

Wo men in Architectur e We are often asked to imagine life without people, life without buildings, even life without cars. But how about a world without architects? Many times, when architects are mentioned, what comes to the mind of most people is a male dominated team who designs buildings. If you were to search for the top 10 architects, construction companies and building engineers, you would find yourself in a male fuelled world of construction, where females make up a mere one in every 10-worker. Who is an architect? An architect is someone who loves to design, and is specifically trained and licensed to work on the planning and designing of buildings. The facets of an architect's role are as varied and fascinating as their work. They are professionals who lead the process of creating functional spaces, from concept and design to a full realisation of those designs. Thus, a good architect is not defined by gender or that being a good architect and a woman isn‘t a singularly special occurrence. Rather the very nature of women being strong, bold, opinionated, good fashion sensed, and confident has great impact on architecture. In Ghana, women in architecture have made a giant leap in the career front with their aspirations and there is no denying this fact. They have been one of the chief beneficiaries of the industry boom and it follows that their career trajectories have many underlying complexities. They should be inspired to keep up the good work and erase up all the question marks on their competence. Women architects fronting the designs and execution of some of the beautiful low and highrise buildings which are gradually changing the skylines in Ghana and across the world are bettering the urban fabric. Their approach, differentiates from their counterparts design in terms of fluidity, curviness and attention to details. The biggest part of every design

is in the details. How the very nature of being female can affect and inform one‘s planning directions, leaves much to be desired. These factors can be conscious decisions, or sub-conscious acts inherent to the comparatively compassionate and environmentally aware character of a woman. One explanation of this could be that women‘s ways of knowing and working are different from the rationalist, competitive and hierarchical models promoted by the traditional architects. Further, their role within the realm of the built environment and planning professions would be useful to informing awareness in development. Many a time‘s women downplay their role even as they continue to multitask efficiently and this humble perception gives their partners, staff, family, friends or colleagues the false notion that they aren‘t contributing in a major way. The hope lies in the gender-sensitization of all the stake-holders and understanding the fact that best qualifications, however, is one‘s own work in the form of buildings, projects and architectural design. That attracts attention, arouses expectations and challenges one to do more. then your gender won‘t matter anymore and the word Architect‘ shall be all inclusive. Often When I’m asked, how does it feel to be a woman in architecture? My answer is; I don’t feel anything because I belong here.

WITH AN ARTIST RESPONSIVENESS

NANA AKUA BIRMEH / PRINCIPAL AT ARCH XENUS

In a fiercely male-dominated field of Architecture, one of Ghana's finest female architect is redefining the status quo. Described as an architect with an artist’s responsiveness and vision, her nifty designs and creativity have defined each project throughout her extensive and very diverse portfolio. With the establishment of her own practice, she has crafted a team with this same approach, resulting in a young enthusiastic design office. As the principal architect, she is integral to each project and has led her team to design and consult on a number of projects in this growing Ghanaian Architectural landscape. We got the privilege to interact with her and experience how she blends work and family life together as a lady architect and a she boss. Who is Nana Akua Birmeh? I am a simple but passionate Architect and CEO of Arch Xenus, a proud mother of 3 and married to a Doctor. Why did you choose to be an architect? Did you start working for yourself? I didn’t choose to be an architect, my mother blackmailed me into it. After school, I started my working career in an Architectural office called Atelier F&F. At what point did you decide to start your own firm? How did Arch Xenus start? I didn’t have a choice. Life threw me a curve ball. I became a freelance architect, then got married. My freelance work life and family balance was going to be a burden on the company so I had to leave the job and work on my own. I wrote my professional exams, passed and became a professional architect. I started working from home. As the workload increased, I had to employ more other architects and we kept growing as a company. We finally moved into an office space when our numbers outgrew my home. What is your inspiration and process for your design? I am an artist. I have very good appreciation of art and I can see beyond what we all see. So my experience of a space is different from most people and that's what inspires me when I am designing. There are jobs where I will literally stay up and design all night especially when the client wants it in a very short space of time. For some of them I do a little write up, to sort of paint a picture of what I wanted to achieve with the design. Then, we start brainstorming. How many projects have you designed to date? ‘Hmmm’ I can’t even try to give a number but I have done over 30 projects this year alone.

What was your first big project? I haven't undertaken what I consider a big project yet but I am currently working on a 10 storey building. That can pass for a big project. Were there times you had to let go of work related opportunities because of family? No. I have a pretty good work-family balance. Most times, when you are building a career at that the same time you are building a family but my family is my life. My kids come by the office to see me when they close from school. My doctor husband is also pretty busy but I have some trusted people who help out. Do you see any of your kids follow in your footsteps? It's difficult to tell now as my 3 boys are still young but I’m certain I will not push any of them to follow in my footsteps. What are your future goals? Personally, I think our profession hasn't given us a lot to look forward to but there is so much we can do. I want to build a Company that will expand and have branches globally. Do you think there are opportunities out there in today’s world for women to excel in various fields? Definitely. There are a lot of opportunities out there, you just have to go for it. Three things people don’t know about you? First of all, I am a toothless bulldog. Secondly I’m very old fashioned. My husband updates me on all the current trends in music and movies. I’m such an old soul, I could sleep in a nightclub. Lastly, I have very limited capacity for anger. I don’t like to be angered. They call me national peace council at the office. When you are not working how do you spend your time? If I am not working I am home with my family or traveling with the kids. Work is life, Life is work. My most peaceful moment is when I sleep when I’m flying. That’s the only time I’m truly ever alone. What are some of your holiday places outside Ghana? I love Georgetown, Washington D.C, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Cape town (gorgeous) , Freetown (most incredible beaches. The waters are so clear you can walk in them forever. They are like a big pool). I travel with the family every other year. What other career path would you have taken if you were not an architect? I would have been a graphic designer, cartoonist, a musician or gone into advertising. Guilty Pleasures? Wine.

60 Architectural Journalism 11th MARCH, 2017. EDITION 7

Making Architectural knowledge more accessible. Challenges in this emerging area of architectural journalism in Ghana.

By Dexel Sagoe Moses

A

rchitecture and Journalism, two thriving industries worth integrating. That is what I picked up when I had this intimate interview with our editor in chief, Abena Anima Adjei Aboagye. She described Architectural Journalism as discussing and documenting Architecture, using media outlets to shed light on the architectural world. “Architectural journalism allows Ghanaians to follow everything that is happening on the Ghanaian architectural landscape. Architecture forms the basis of a career in architectural journalism seeing as an architect will be more equipped to find and provide the right kind of information, based on their prior studies. The journalism aspect of reading and writing and researching also needs to be honed and then you may be well on your way to becoming an architectural journalist.” She says. As a young lass, Anima, CEO of Scenic Initiatives grew up with her parents, observing with keen interest as they excitedly flipped through a magazine choosing items for their home design and décor and making exquisite installations. This was the beginning of her interest in architecture and interior design. The pivotal moment for her career in Architectural journalism was during a school project in the university, where she struggled to find the right items she needed locally. That is when the idea of Scene Catalogue was birthed. She took this on as a personal project and began putting the magazine together. It brought surprisingly good reviews and encouragement, which stirred her on into launching the magazine.

Not to mention the printing cost as the leading hindrance of getting a magazine of this nature published. But through it all she sailed through and stood firm. Currently, Scene Catalogue has built a strong foundation and appeals to architects and builders who are interested in seeing new trends and what is available on the Ghanaian market. Also it appeals to the young and new home owners, and the elderly, who may be interested in building their dream homes, renovating their homes or making smaller changes. She mentioned that people would usually look through foreign magazines and websites for their inspiration, but Scene Catalogue brings it all home and for this, they are definitely excited. She went further to discuss the implication of less exposure of architecture in Ghana by saying “There is an interesting phenomenon in Ghana which we cannot be blind to, we do not give architecture the necessary attention. The result? Buildings looking like Sore thumbs sticking out on the Ghanaian landscape, and the preponderance of slums that are a common place now all because of the lack of understanding of architecture by citizens. Architecture is the building environment and it undoubtedly plays an important role in urban planning. The future of architecture journalism in Ghana is exciting because there is a lot to tap into, and as Scene Catalogue pushes the education of architecture in Ghana, the opportunities are becoming clearer.

As with everything new, there were challenges in this emerging area of architectural journalism in Ghana. Commonly colleagues were not ready or available to write and contribute even though they had ideas. SCENE CATALOGUE
