W HAT 'S TRENDING 2016? BUILDINGS

Offices & Commercial Complexes

Apartments According to an Accra based architect, the current trend in building is the high end apartments. The high demand for these apartments has led to the growing number of developers turning to that market. Apartments generally save space and offer their occupants the opportunity to interact with other residents, thus promoting social interactions.

A lot of investors are going into the construction of offices and commercial complexes that are well designed and environmentally friendly. The spaces serve as retail, convenience shops, offices for financial institutions and other businesses. These buildings are mostly high-rise with elevators leading to the various floors.

Most of the apartments springing up in the city are safer than stand-alone houses, because neighbors are constantly watching one another’s properties. Some of these apartments are gated and have round the clock security service. Most of these new apartments springing up provide their residents with recreational facilities such as swimming pool areas, gyms and lawn tennis courts. The real estate industry in Ghana is on the ascendancy and this has attracted players from other sectors to complement the housing sector. One such complementary sector is that of interior design, which adds much gloss and excitement to a home.

Minimalism & Modernism

Natural Materials

Minimalism and modernism will always be a trend in our time. The clean look of modern interiors make homeowners love this type of concept which is clutter free and stress free. What more if you use minimal furniture and accessories? Your spaces will surely look light and calming. It will even be a lot easier to clean it. You will certainly like to go home if you have a minimalist modern living room and even invite your family and friends to show them how relaxing your home looks like.

You’ve probably heard about the advantages of decorating with natural materials like marble, wood, metals and clay. Chances are, you’ve also wandered what exactly counts as “natural”. In the world of interiors, “natural” is a broad term that encompasses any renewable resource that is harvested from the earth for use. There is a new tendency in the interior design which is concentrating on the power and beauty of nature. By introducing different natural materials in your home, you will improve your domestic environment and give your place a more interesting look. This change of the interior design will also have a very beneficial effect on you and your health. It is known that the natural materials and elements can make you more calm, focused and relaxed.

ow often you use a sofa should help determine it's size. If you aren't someone who uses a sofa a lot, then maybe get a love seat. But, If you lounge around a lot, lie on the sofa then make sure you are actually able to sprawl out.

Tips for choosing the perfect sofa

H

ere's how to get the big, comfy couch you really want like everything else in this era of endless choices, there seem to be infinite options when it comes to choosing a sofa. You might think you know exactly what you want, but once you walk into a shop or browse images online, the styles, shapes, and customization alternatives can become overwhelming. Save yourself the time, money, and potential buyer's remorse and use these tips to get a clear idea of what you want (and what you need!) before you start the hunt.

Consider size first If you have a bigger living room, you'll need to decide exactly how much of the space you want your couch to fill. A simple sofa, or one with a slight L-shape is probably the best fit. If you're looking for a sofa that will be the focal point of your living room, look for rounder couch shapes that take up a bit more room and provide a lot of seating. Here's a great example of a strong and simple L-shaped sofa used at Ambassador Heights.

16

SCENE CATALOGUE - www.scenecatalogue.com

Photographer: Steve Morris Location: Ambassador Heights

Decide exactly how the sofa will be oriented Successfully organizing a living space starts with analyzing your lifestyle. What do you do the most in that space? Love hosting game or wine nights? Create a semi circle (or even full circle) around a central table.

Does your family use the living room to lounge, relax and read? Surround your sofa with chairs and cushions to create multiple seating areas that can be enjoyed individually, or as a large group. Photographer: Steve Morris Location: The Royal Senchi

17

Determine which shape will suit the ro om best Now that you've decided your sofa's function, it's time to figure out which shape will help it fulfill that purpose. A clean L-shape is great for open areas that need to be divided — such as separating the living room from the dining room.

Photographer: Steve Morris Location: The Royal Senchi

Research upholstery materials, which will be best for you Aesthetic is important, but functionality is key when it comes to choosing a material for your sofa. A lot of us that will love to indulge in a plush, white suede sofa —they're so gorgeous, but so dangerous. Suede can be a poor choice if you have pets or small children who can cause some serious damage. Pure leather — particularly in darker colors — is consistently in style, generally wears well with age, and can be fairly easy to clean. Another choice is to opt to have your couch upholstered in an outdoor fabric. Many companies now carry Sunbrella fabrics, which resist stains, water and fading from the sun. Many outdoor furniture companies also have outdoor couches and love seats that are so simple and classic in design that they can easily be used indoors.

18

SCENE CATALOGUE - www.scenecatalogue.com

Photographer: Steve Morris Location: Ambassador Heights

Choose a style that compliments your home It can be a little hard to nail down your own personal style, but go with your gut instinct when picking the type of couch that will fit naturally in your home. If your style is sleek and modern, pick something that reflects that in clean lines and dramatic colors. If your look is a little more traditional, a classically structured sofa in a durable and neutral fabric will stand the test of time and will work well with various colors and complementing pieces.

SIMPLE TRICKS • • • • •

A sofa with legs can make a room feel larger. Bold colors can be tricky in a sofa—use such hues in accessories such as lamps or throw pillows instead. Keep patterns small in modern sofa silhouettes with cleaner lines. Place the sofa facing the view you will most like to see from it. Leather, textured velvet or treated linen sofas are more practical than ones done in delicate, fine fabrics

such as silk.

How to arrange furniture in your bedroom Photographer: Steve Morris Location: The Royal Senchi

A

rranging furniture is an art– no, seriously, it’s one of the most important parts about interior design. That’s not to say that it’s best left to the pros, though. Everyone can design their own perfect space with just a little bit of thought and a lot of experimentation. In fact, figuring out how to set up your new place is really the fun part of moving into a home.

Use Only Necessary Furniture

Before you start deciding where to put what, think about the furniture you’re using and try to use only the pieces that are necessary for the room to function. This is especially important in small apartments when there isn’t a lot of extra space – using fewer pieces will make the room look and feel a lot more spacious. If your room is extra tiny, use taller dressers and shelves to get more storage whiles taking up less room. Photographer: Steve Morris Location: The Royal Senchi

VOID

When it comes to arranging furniture in your home, it’s sometimes necessary to get a little creative, and even to just throw the rule book out the window every now and then. One of the most difficult rooms to design tends to be the bedroom, especially if it’s small. So, read on to learn how to arrange furniture in your bedroom.

24

SCENE CATALOGUE - www.scenecatalogue.com

Arrange the furniture you have first

Another quick tip before you get started; Don’t buy new furniture until you’ve arranged the pieces you already have. That way you’ll know the exact furniture you need, along with the dimensions and style you will use when shopping.

Draw it Out

It’s a good idea to experiment with different arrangements on paper before you start pushing furniture around the room. That way you can eliminate some options that won’t work without potentially scratching your floor or walls while moving your dresser for the zillionth time.

Measure at least your biggest items (bed, dresser, shelves, etc.), as well as the dimensions of your room, then sketch out a couple of different options. If you’re not much of an artist, check out an app that can do the job for you. Try Home Design 3D (iOS) or Floor Plan Creator (Android).

Think About Function

While figuring out how to arrange furniture in your new bedroom, think about your lifestyle. This can really affect where your furniture ends up. Also, while placing your bed under windows is totally OK from a design perspective, you may find yourself feeling uncomfortable drafts over the cold and rainy days.

Go Big to Small

In a small bedroom, you may have to break these guidelines, though. Find a spot for your bed that makes the most sense to you, just make sure you can open and close your bedroom and closet doors.

Photographer: Steve Morris Location: Aquasafari

For instance, if you tend to watch a lot of TV in bed, you’ll want to find a layout that works well for that. Also, plan your walkways. If your bed is blocking your path from the dresser to the mirror, you may find yourself a little annoyed down the road.

Dive in Bed First

Once you’re ready to put the pencil and paper (or app) down, and start actually arranging, begin with your bed. Traditionally, beds are placed on the wall opposite the door or the largest wall with no windows. Visualizer: Archie Eastwood Anaba

PRINCIPLES OF GOOD BATHROOM DESIGN

A bathroom must have sufficient space to maneuever, not just space for the fixtures. The door to the bathroom must be easy to move around and there should be space for taking clothes on and off and enough room to dry yourself.

Access to natural light if possible and well lit. Natural lighting helps to kill germs and dries up the space faster.

Appropriate storage is essential. A clean and clear mirror with cabinetry is required.

Photographer: Steve Morris Location: Aquasafari

Locating your bathroom close to another bathroom or even above or below is essential and efficient for duct and water works. A bathroom needs to be located in a private position in the floor plan within easy reach of the bedrooms.

Colors in the kitchen that will affect your appetite

I

t’s amazing how much color has to do with a person’s appetite. Some hues sway a person towards food while others cause them to feel less hungry. Food is a pleasure enjoyed both by the mind and body. The taste, texture and presentation of the food itself are obviously crucial, but the overall enjoyment of a meal can either be enhanced or lessened by the surroundings in which it is eaten.

"How does your décor ‘speak’ to your appetite? What does it say? Is it inviting?" Your ambience has to be spot on, everything counts. Your interior plays a very large role as it whets the appetite. Your interior design and décor make up what is essentially an environment that cooks food.

ORANGES

The color orange stimulates the brain, which increases mental activity and often stirs up a sensation of hunger. Many healthy foods are orange; butternut squash, carrots, oranges, and pumpkins just to name a few. Orange is a color that makes people feel welcome and when someone is comfortable, eating sounds like a great idea.

34

SCENE CATALOGUE - www.scenecatalogue.com

GREENS

The color green is such a healthy color. Salads are filled with green foods and most products considered being more natural than others are usually contained in green packaging. Many people are attracted to the color green and associated with it's abundance. This is a good color to promote healthy eating and lots of it. Acceptable uses of green: olive works well if used correctly. Avocado or lime green can also work, but are to be used carefully. If you are unsure, don’t use green in your furnishings, you can always bring green in by putting flowers on the tables.

YELLOWS The color yellow makes most people very happy. It’s a cheery color that is noticeable in most surroundings. When people are happy, they are more likely to eat than when they are feeling sad or overly calm.

REDS & BROWNS The color red raises a person’s blood pressure, heart rate and causes hunger to be more prevalent. This is why many restaurants choose to have red table cloths or red accents on the walls. Red is an excellent color to paint the dining room especially. The color brown is another dark color that tends to make people not to feel hunger. Brown reminds people of food that has been overdone or burnt. A few people might think of homemade bread or other baked goods when looking at the color brown, but for the most part this is a color not associated with an increase in one’s appetite. `

lor o c t l u c i f f Di for schemess kitchen

GREY

The color gray generally turns people away from the thought of food. Have you ever seen a plate full of gray food that looked appetizing? Gray is definitely a color you should stay away from when it comes to painting the interior of a dining room.

BLACK

The color black is used to cause a person’s appetite to diminish. While it might be a slimming color when worn, it is not one that should be used in the kitchen or dining room to stimulate hunger. Very few restaurants incorporate black or any dark colors at all for that matter when decorating. They want to promote thoughts of food, not squelch them.

NEUTRALS You can always jazz up a neutral scheme with accessories, however neutralizing a strong color scheme is altogether more difficult. If in doubt, decorate using neutral colors and accentuate your interior with accessories such as artwork, flowers or napkins in your main food colors. Cool colors are calming, peaceful and are a classy safe bet.

TURQUOISE

PURPLE

The color purple is rarely found in the world of foods. When it is present, it is often attached to foods not everyone enjoys; eggplant, red onions, and purple cabbage. Very few people find these foods tasty enough to drool over, so the color purple rarely makes people feel hungry. Used correctly purple is luxurious, rich and sumptuous. Used incorrectly and it can be dingy or synthetic looking.

BLUE The color blue has always been associated with calmness. This is a color that is best left for the bedroom or a room where relaxation is the key. People who are extremely calm and relaxed are more prone to sleeping than eating. Supposedly putting a blue light in the kitchen will suppress your appetite, which might be helpful if you are trying to cut back on the amount of calories you consume each day. There is no natural food color association, do not use it in your décor. Acceptable uses of blue: use only the real sky or sea that you can see out of the windows.

The color turquoise has a different hue than the standard blue tint mentioned above. Turquoise is actually an appetite stimulant. It’s often connected to happiness and the feeling of being carefree. It’s the color of tropical waters and used a lot on dessert plates. Even if you think you are full after dinner, seeing a piece of cake on a turquoise colored plate is likely to make you want to eat the dessert anyway.
