In 2012, the Olympic flame was lit in London. It captured the imagination of a nation. It inspired individuals. It delivered several weeks of astonishing spectacle and a wealth of magical memories.

But the vision was always to deliver more. To create a lasting legacy that will have an impact long into the future.

Step forward Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park; the only location of its kind in the world to be awarded the accolade and prestige of the Olympics outside of a host city. Created with a shared vision that brings together public and private sector organisations alongside elite athletes and innovators from academia to pioneer worldleading improvements in sport, health and wellbeing.

The fire from the flame

If Sheffield had been a country at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games it would have come 14th in the medal table through the athletes developed and trained in the English Institute of Sport Sheffield.

A legacy for life-times. A legacy for all-times.

Sheffield steel

Sheffield. The steel city. A city at the very heart of the industrial revolution that drove the economic growth of the country in the 19th century. A city that forged the steel industry forward through discovery and innovation, and led to the creation of stainless steel. An industry upon which Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park has been built.

Steel has also become synonymous with the history and heritage of Sheffield’s sporting success.

Bramall Lane, home to Sheffield United FC, AKA the 'Blades', is one of the oldest sports enclosures in the world.

It's also the former playing ground of Sheffield FC, which is credited as being the world’s oldest football club having been founded in 1857, and Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which was formed in the city in 1863.

While Sheffield currently has teams across all major sports, it's the performance of home-grown or trained athletes such as Dame Jessica EnnisHill, Anthony Joshua OBE, Nicola Adams OBE and Will Bayley MBE that has seen the city’s reputation for sport grow exponentially.

Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park has been at the fulcrum of this success.

Sheffield-born metallurgist, Harry Brearley was credited with the invention of stainless steel in 1913.

Wellbeing is a right

It's widely recognised that social and economic factors impact health and wellbeing, with people living in disadvantaged communities more likely to have long-term health conditions.

Our goal is to provide a platform to eradicate health inequalities and ensure that wellbeing is accepted globally as a basic human right. To improve whole-population health outcomes through preventative intervention and encourage people to lead healthier, active lifestyles. Because there should be nothing more important to a nation than the health of its people.

The more we understand sports performance, the more we understand health and wellbeing. Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is fostering collaborations that will inspire generations and benefit millions.

Most science and technology parks emerge and grow organically from academic institutions, Government research facilities, and the research and development divisions of major corporations. Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park sets out to take a different approach.

Spearheaded by Legacy Park Ltd, a unique community of seven key public sector partners, and leading property regeneration and placemaking specialist, Scarborough Group International, we’re creating an environment that harnesses knowledge and innovation to drive transformational change on a local, national and international level.

Canon Medical’s Diagnostic Centre will give people access to cutting-edge health screening.

Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre is giving hope to those living with rare and chronic illnesses.

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust will help address key national strategic priorities for the health of our children through its National Centre for Child Health Technology.

The UK is facing a major skills shortage, which has the potential to stymie the development of high-tech growth sectors, such as life sciences. But what if your future talent pool was located right on your doorstep?

At Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, we’ve created a sustainable solution to our future talent strategy. Through the educational institutions based here, namely the Oasis Academy Don Valley, the UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and Sheffield Hallam University, we’re helping to propel young people from nursery through to higher education, directly into the workforce.

Our businesses work proactively with educators to provide a multipurpose learning environment that helps students gain the vocational qualifications and skills required to fulfil their potential, while also cultivating a pipeline of skilled employees to support the Park’s future workforce. Indeed, a good number of students have already gained positions with businesses here.

From the Oasis Community Hub to the abundance of green space or the weekly junior parkrun, everyone is able to find something of interest, something that will spark their imagination, something that will make their own or, indeed, someone else’s lives better.

The Oasis Community Hub at Oasis Academy Don Valley serves the pupils, families, and wider community in the local area. A Hub Council is in place, made up of staff, parents and community members who help plan and implement the Community Hub activities.

With its central and well-connected location, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is one of the finest examples of business and community coming together, in a single, accessible location.

Situated just minutes from the M1, 10 minutes from Sheffield train station and within 90 minutes of five international airports, we’re ideally located for organisations and visitors in the UK and further afield.

We've focused on the infrastructure and connectivity to ensure people can travel here as easily as possible. Sustainable and eco-friendly travel is actively encouraged, with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists.

Not only is the Park well-connected by tram and bus from Sheffield and Rotheram, it's on the Blue Loop waterways walk from the city centre or Meadowhall. The National Cycle Network routes make it easily accessible without increasing your carbon footprint.

There is also an abundance of green space to enjoy. People can walk, jog or work out in the outdoors or just relax with the family.

The first £100m of investment has proved to be an enormous success and the next phase will see Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park continue its growth both in terms of facilities and reputation. The addition of up to 1m sq ft of commercial space will support organisations at all stages of development in the sports, health and wellbeing sectors to reach their potential. Over the course of the next generation, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park will deliver better healthcare outcomes, education opportunities, jobs and economic growth to fulfil the Olympic promise and leave a legacy we can all be proud of.

We cannot stand still.

Progress isn't something we can hold in our hands. Sometimes, when we're close to a project, it's easy to forget how far we've come. But no one can underestimate the impact Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park has had since its inception. That's because progress has been continual and always will be.

The next stage of investment in Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park has already begun and will see up to 1m sq ft of commercial space delivered around the existing facilities.

This legacy is a collaboration that has shown what can happen when we set out a clear pathway, free from any considerations other than to do our best for people.

This legacy puts health and wellbeing at its core. It shows what we learn from sports science can be applied to help anyone and everyone.

This legacy has proved what can happen when you believe in people. When you create opportunities for them. When you inspire the ambition within them. When you offer support and show belief.

This legacy is no static monument to the occasion from 2012. This legacy is going to be lived today and all our days.
