SCAN of Northern Virginia 2014 ANNUAL REPORT & 2015 CALENDAR

Every positive, new connection we create supports children and families that are more resilient in the face of stress, crisis and trauma. Our work building connections creates a network of parents, caregivers, advocates, volunteers and many more who are a safety net for the children in our community. These connections are how we stop abuse. How we support parents. And how, together, we build stronger families and communities.

dear I friends,

n a world where we can easily feel disconnected and isolated, the power of making connections – between children and parents, between volunteers and families, between our community members and local youth – is critical. It increases our ability to protect children, support parents, strengthen families and ultimately to prevent child abuse and neglect. Every day, SCAN's programs build connections that are changing lives. Every year, hundreds of children and families in Northern Virginia are served by our advocacy and parent education programs, and thousands more connect with us through outreach and public education. The year 2014 was filled with many activities to make connections and to help meet the community’s needs. SCAN’s CASA program saw a 15% increase in cases and 20 more program volunteers joined our ranks to advocate for a child in the court system. In addition, the new “Kids Need Connections” awareness campaign debuted in April during Child Abuse Prevention month and more than 200 parents found support and better parenting practices through SCAN’s parenting classes and support groups. Internally at SCAN, our ability to make connections has also improved with a technology upgrade thanks to grants and pro bono work. We now have a multi-media room for training, new computers and a more user-friendly website.

Sonia and Patti had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Terry Morris, who served as Keynote Speaker at SCAN’s Annual Allies in Prevention Awards Luncheon in 2014. His personal story of connections brought to life the importance of our work, and energized us all for the year ahead.

The accomplishments featured in this combination 2014 annual report and 2015 calendar were made possible through the financial support of donors and the dedication of hundreds of volunteers. We thank them all for making our community better and for contributing to our vision that every child will grow up in a safe, stable and nurturing family. Read on to find out more about SCAN’s role in preventing child abuse and neglect and why it’s so important that we continue to build connections for children and families.

A

muscular, tattooed young man, Dan* enrolled in a parenting class series last fall. When asked to introduce himself, he was very open about his past and why he’d come to the classes. He’d been a gang leader, had spent time in jail – had “been there, done that.” The mother of his child was still involved in selling drugs but he’d looked into the eyes of his two-year-old son and decided that was not the life he wanted for him. So he made changes in his own life and filed for custody. At parenting classes, he worked hard to learn as much as he could, asking lots of questions and encouraging the other dads in the class throughout the 8-week series. During meal time on the last night of class, he approached SCAN’s facilitator Mary Louise with a grin: “I was in court yesterday,” he said. “And?” she inquired.

son

“The judge awarded me full custody,” he pronounced with pride, and then the color washed from his face as he gulped, “I pick him up this weekend.” Mary Louise waited until he continued: “I’m scared to death.” She grinned. “Then, you are ready! It’s good that you’re scared. That means you understand the heavy responsibility of being a father, especially a single father. But you know the kind of father you want to be, and you’ve proven you are willing to reach out and accept help. Just keep asking for help and you’ll do great. Your son is a lucky boy.”

We connect adults to the best knowledge & networks so they can stop child sexual abuse.

T

hree years ago, SCAN held its first Darkness to Light Stewards of Children training. Since then, we've held thirty-four additional training events, and last June we held our largest training yet for 63 members of the Open Door Presbyterian Church in Herndon.

1 in 10 children will be sexually abused by their 18th birthday. Statistics told those church members that children within their own large congregation could be suffering from child sexual abuse, and they were ready to take action. Three of SCAN's authorized facilitators presented the training, asking questions that challenged beliefs and knowledge about child sexual abuse. The facilitators will continue to be there for the group as they edit their codes of conduct and policies within the church. In three years, our authorized facilitators have trained 522 people. Every trained adult now has the opportunity to be that critical connection for a child who might urgently need it. By connecting them with knowledge, they are able to recognize signs of sexual abuse, are better equipped to prevent child sexual abuse, and are not afraid to act. They are connecting with thousands of others by working on creating, rewriting or enforcing codes of conduct and policies within the dozens of organizations they serve across Northern Virginia.

L

ydia* has advocated for more than 40 children as a CASA volunteer, but nothing could prepare her for her most recent case involving an immigrant mother with three sons (John 15, Josh 12, James 2). Brought to the U.S. with the promise of “a better life,” she found herself physically and emotionally beaten by her alcoholic husband. Not allowed to play outside or make friends at school, the boys spent their time worried that the house was clean and meals prepared before their father came home. The case was originally reported to child protective services because the oldest son, John, was injured when he tried to protect his mother from an attack. The mother spoke little English and didn’t make much eye contact, but she was very clear about some points: “Yes, I hurt, but I don’t want my sons hurt too.” With the help of an interpreter and her sons chiming in, Lydia learned that it is not their family’s custom to discuss what happens in their home, but the mother knew her husband had to leave. Lydia reassured the children and mother that her role was to make sure their voices were heard throughout the court process. Over the next six months, John received inpatient counseling services, and James was put into daycare while their mother was offered employment assistance. But every time Lydia visited, she noticed that the middle son, Josh, was isolated in his room. By the third visit, Lydia learned Josh was on long term suspension and had a probation officer because he was fighting and skipping school. “I’m just mad, I don’t know why, just MAD,” Josh eventually told Lydia. Lydia realized at that moment that she needed to advocate not just for John, who was the catalyst to the court involvement, but also for Josh. It was clear that even after their bruises were gone, they were still struggling with the after-effects of domestic violence. “There is a long road of healing ahead,” notes Lydia, “But I am hopeful that the interventions the court system is providing will help the boys break the cycle of violence and allow them to be happy and healthy children; they deserve that and much more.” Lydia’s initial connection with one child grew into something much more comprehensive for a family in crisis.

CAN launched its "Kids Need Connections" campaign last April to educate parents and community members about the critical importance of healthy, positive adult connections in the lives of children. Those connections mentioned in the campaign—from parents and caregivers to professionals (like teachers) to neighbors and community members—are critical to preventing abuse and neglect and nurturing children's growth and development. When a child feels loved and supported by multiple adults, they learn to value themselves and feel empowered to succeed. Over the last year we've also realized this: ALL of the adult and organizational connections in a community greatly impact a child's safety, health and happiness. Parents connecting with teachers. Social workers connecting with faith groups. Medical professionals connecting with neighborhoods.

hope When we meet with our Allies in Prevention Coalition each quarter, we're connecting agencies, schools and other nonprofits in a powerful way that allows for shared best practices, open discussion and the transfer of knowledge throughout the wide geographic area of Northern Virginia. We get materials into the hands of dozens of child- and family-focused organizations across the region, organizations with intimate and experienced connections within their local community, whether it be an individual school or an immigrant parenting program or a faith group.

We connect child & family advocates with tools, resources and partners for change.

T

he Millar* family came to a SCAN support group last year with special concerns. Their daughter Lea was having difficulties at home and at school, and had recently been diagnosed with ADHD. They were in need of support from the other parents in the group, but also tangible ideas and tools to help improve their parenting skills. Throughout the year, SCAN coordinates workshops for support group members, and one particular topic peaked their interest: helping children through reflexology. Michael Keith, a reflexology expert, joined the group one evening to show parents how they can help their children through reflexology, an alternative method similar to massage that can help children with anxiety, trouble sleeping, hyperactivity and more.

When he arrived, Lea was already running around and acting quite restless. Mr. Keith asked the parents and the children for a volunteer, and a SCAN staff member looked at Lea’s mom for permission to suggest Lea. She immediately nodded in agreement. Lea sat on the chair so Mr. Keith could give her a “massage” on her feet. After a few minutes, she started to relax, put her head on the arm rest and let the therapist work. While he was doing the pressure points on her feet, he was explaining what he was doing so parents could replicate it at home. At one point, he stopped working on Lea’s feet to use his hands to explain the pressure movement; Lea immediately sat up, took his hand and placed it back on her little feet. Everybody laughed, and Lea’s mom had tears in her eyes as she watched her calmed daughter, knowing she could now use the same methods at home.

We connect parents with healthy sources of support and information.

aya* was assigned to advocate for 2-yearold twin boys and their 4-year-old sibling when their father was arrested during a drug raid in their home. The children were placed in foster care, and upon initial medical screening it was noted that the twins were at risk for failure to thrive because they only weighed 22 lbs. and had cavities. The 4-year-old could talk, but his words were hard to understand and he could not be controlled by his social workers or foster parents. When Maya first met the children, the oldest threw blocks at her and ran away, while the twins cried. She spent two hours talking to the foster parents to learn about the children’s routine and how they were adjusting. Maya actively engaged with the children and their father in this case, while remaining neutral and realistic about the family’s challenges and ability to overcome those challenges. The young children were given a regular eating schedule with supplements to assist with weight gain, and the 4-year-old connected with a speech pathologist and a therapist to help with anger management. The case hit a minor setback in the goal of reunification when the father was sentenced to 9 months in jail for drug possession. When they leave foster care, the children will live with their grandmother until their father is released and it is deemed appropriate for him to have custody. Maya loyally attends team meetings, school meetings, visits at the foster home and visits at the biological home even though it often means many miles of travel. She regularly updates the social worker and Guardian ad Litem, who appreciate her work and welcome her feedback and observations about the comfort and security of the children, information which helps the entire team work toward a faster, permanent resolution for the family.

any local faith groups already have an important connection to the children and parents in our communities – and they are often in unique positions to safely provide support, compassion and answers to some of a parent’s hardest questions. SCAN connects with faith groups to host Stewards of Children child sexual abuse prevention trainings, plant Pinwheel Gardens during child abuse prevention month, and host many of our Parent Education Program series.

We connect faith groups to the tools that can help them protect children and support their families. Last summer, SCAN's Public Education committee worked to develop one place on the SCAN website where faith groups could find tools and information to help support parents and families. This year we are deepening those connections, working with interfaith groups to help strengthen families and protect children in their congregations and beyond.

J

im* recently attended a SCAN Parent Education program out of pure frustration. He was struggling to manage his 10-year old son with autism. Jim was not thrilled to be at the classes and initially complained about having to do homework, saying he felt like he was back in middle school. But as weeks passed, he began to see how his parenting behaviors affected his son for better – and for worse. Jim shared with the group that he and his son had gone to multiple doctors and therapists in search of help. As he put it, he tried “all kinds of crazy ideas to ‘fix’ his autistic child,” and still felt helpless as a parent. But things changed dramatically during his time with SCAN, as he worked on understanding child development, positive discipline and handling stress. By the end of the series, Jim told his facilitator he wished he had been there five years earlier, when his son was originally diagnosed. “I wouldn’t have been trying so hard to fix my child,” he said. “I would have realized I just needed to adjust my parenting style to match his, and enjoy him for who he is.”

The case was opened as a Child In Need of Supervision (CHINS) case. When CASA volunteer Ed met with the mother, he discovered that she had just been in a life-threatening car accident that shattered her pelvis and fractured numerous bones in her body. Her injuries made it hard for her to consistently get Ellen to school without the support of her abusive boyfriend. Ed eventually learned she made her boyfriend leave because his behavior with Ellen was inappropriate.

H

undreds of local businesses support SCAN’s programs every year, and not just by making financial donations. We love that our corporate donors often want to connect with the families and programs on a more intimate level. Burke & Herbert Bank is a longtime donor, but this year they also hosted a coin drive during child abuse prevention month, giving us a great opportunity to reach more people—from local students to cub scouts to bank customers —with our “Kids Need Connections” public education campaign. Wells Fargo often sponsors fundraising events like Croquet Day, but they also sent a large volunteer group to prepare and serve a meal at one of our parenting classes last year. Cheesetique regularly donates fine food to Toast to Hope, but last year they also signed on as a Pinwheel Partner, handing out resources and collecting donations at their storefronts. Financial contributions are critical, but the real-life connections our supporters make with the children and families in our programs are truly irreplaceable.
