Welcome

Welcome to the 1 edition of our new Scannappeal business supporter newsletter. st

I am so excited to be launching our first newsletter specifically aimed at our business supporter network In designing this I’ve had three aims in mind – firstly to highlight and thank the great support received from the business community Secondly to keep you all informed about the impact that this support will have on our appeals, and thirdly to inspire you to explore further opportunities to get involved

Together over the years we have already made a huge social and economic impact on our local communities, with over 100,000 patients benefiting each year through access to the best possible diagnostic and medical equipment available today. Whilst we should rightly celebrate what we achieve

together, there is some serious context to our newsletter as described below The challenges across our NHS are also evident in Buckinghamshire and will not be going away soon – increasing demand for services, increasing technology and drug costs, ageing population, and how to create sustainable healthier communities

Through this e-book I want to keep you informed, connected, motivated, and engaged with Scannappeal Working together we can save and transform lives

Many thanks

Nigel Naylor-Smith

Why do we even need a newsletter or forge business involvement with Scannappeal? So, here’s the challenge:

Buckinghamshire is facing into a major health and care challenge

Over 34,000 more people over 65 by 2043.

37% increase in people living with major illnesses by 2040 (across England).

More than 6 in 10 adults are overweight or obese driving up cancer and diabetes rates.

NHS costs are increasing faster than the UK economy can fund them.

The implications:

Demand for health and care services is increasing as the working population decreases.

The focus needs to be on identifying illnesses earlier

There will be insufficient capital funds to meet future need

The right medical equipment is needed to meet that increasing demand and expand the capacity of hospital and community diagnostic services

Through your ongoing support of Scannappeal, we can fund new equipment to improve and increase diagnostic capabilities using enhanced technology to spot illnesses earlier, and helping patients get back on their feet faster

Whether the patient is your colleague, your friend, or in your community or family, we all will rely on Buckinghamshire NHS Healthcare Trust services into the future.

We hope you enjoy reading our new newsletter

Scannappeal Business Breakfast

A huge thank you to those who attended our first Scannappeal business breakfast focussed on the leadership theme – Mastering the Unpredictable: Leadership for Uncertain Times The business breakfast is our way of giving something tangible back to you, providing an opportunity for networking over breakfast, and reflection via an inspirational guest speaker on a key topic of the day

A massive thanks to all of the above businesses for helping with these events – your support makes our events stronger and helps us raise vital funds to support our appeals Through your engagement more lives could be saved, and social and economic value created The new medical equipment diagnoses illnesses quicker, and enables patients to return back into the workplace literally weeks earlier due to the newer and less invasive medical technology used for treatment So, what has your support meant for our current appeals, read on to find out more.

Current Appeals

Scannappeal has now raised over £20m since being founded in 1987 – with over 40 major appeals completed and every major hospital department supported.

The appeals that you have supported and are supporting means that our life-saving and life-changing medical equipment is used by on average 100,000 local people per year With well-documented challenges in the NHS, our work is vital to maintain the highest standard of healthcare, especially when faced with increasing population numbers, an ageing population, and increasing cost of technology

Below is a quick update on our five ongoing appeals:

The Mobile Breast Screening Appeal has reached £161,000 in just 9 months – the aim is to upgrade and expand mammography services across south Bucks for over 10,000 women per year, the new unit providing more access to better diagnostic capability and more comfortable experience

Only £249,000 left to go from the £410,000 appeal target

The first spinal endoscopy was carried out in Wycombe Hospital using Scannappeal funded equipment as part of our Spinal Surgery Appeal – creating the benefits of minimal invasive procedures, treating conditions such as disc prolapse or spinal stenosis as day cases, and improving patient recovery rates. This appeal makes Wycombe only one out of a handful of hospitals which can perform such procedures.

Only £264,000 left to go out of a £1.1m appeal target

Supporting the national roll out of targeted lung cancer screening, the Lung Cancer Biopsy Appeal equipment for Stoke Mandeville will support the Bucks screening programme which commenced in August 2024 The equipment worth £150,000 will make cancer nodules easier to reach and detect through the introduction of navigational bronchoscopy technology. Why the focus on this – lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in the UK. (Read Roy’s story at the end about the loss of his son Mark to Lung Cancer).

Only £61,000 left to go out of a £150,000 appeal target

As part of the Best for Bucks Appeal, Scannappeal has the improvement of women’s health services via the p hysteroscopes – allowing better diagnostic examinatio waiting times and better patient experiences As a rem Best for Bucks Appeal allows new equipment appeals from a stronger financial start, as well as allowing Scan to react quickly to often urgent needs to purchase life medical equipment, benefiting local patients quicker

The William Baxter Memorial Fund was set up to honour the memory of our late chairman, William, and continue his legacy of wanting to make a lasting impact on the hospitals in Bucks We are delighted that funds from this appeal will enable us to have a strategic impact on enhancing Wycombe Hospital cardiovascular services Further details will be announced later this year and create a lasting memorial for years to come

You might still be wondering why Scannappeal needs to fundraise at all for the above? NHS capital budgets are limited and don’t always extend to providing new state-of-the-art medical equipment that allows new services to be quickly established.

If your business can get behind these appeals and help get them over the finishing line, then we can bring more life-saving diagnosis and treatment to those who need it.

“If it helps just one family, it’s worth it!”

We lost our beloved son Mark to lung cancer in 2020 Mark was kind, funny, and full of life, he meant the world to us and losing him has left a space in our lives that can never be filled

As a long-time supporter of Scannappeal, I’ve seen the real difference this charity makes to local hospitals and patients When you know that someone is receiving life-saving treatment thanks to equipment funded by donations, you feel a deep sense of purpose that perhaps, in some small way, a life has been extended or even saved

Having experienced the heartbreak of losing a child, I know how devastating lung cancer can be, not just for the person diagnosed, but for their entire family. No parent should have to go through what we went through. And I can’t help but wonder whether quicker, more accurate diagnosis could have changed things for Mark.

That’s why I feel so strongly about supporting the Lung Cancer Biopsy Appeal, which will fund vital diagnostic equipment to help detect lung cancer early, giving patients a better chance of survival

If this appeal means that even one family is spared the pain we’ve felt, it will be more than worthwhile I will continue to support this cause with all my heart and I hope you will too

Roy Gibbons, Scannappeal supporter and Mark’s father.

Opportunities for support

Our Scannappeal corporate proposition continues to evolve at pace.

Our partnership pyramid supports one off engagement to charity of the year, to long term objective-based partnership and everything in between From sponsoring an event or a small piece of medical equipment, to product donation or advertisement placement, together we can find the right opportunity

Events

Over the next six months we have a large number of specific event engagement opportunities for you to get involved with - from annual events such as our Christmas Concert through to brand new events including Bubbles, Boobs and Boards and a Posh Pub Quiz, intrigued to find out more?

Charity of the year

Could you consider choosing Scannappeal for your 2026 charity of the year? Let’s work out a tailored programme over 12 months that really stimulates your employees, suppliers and partners.

Volunteering

If your employees are keen to get involved, then we can offer something slightly different Traditionally you could join us at a challenge event, pub quiz, fashion show, skydive, golf day or hold your own events, but why not add corporate volunteering to help NHS patients and local residents

Could you for example support the Head Injury Service who are looking to help 140 individuals return to work by businesses providing industry briefings, mock interviews on your corporate site, CV feedback, mentoring, one day work placements? Or could you commit to helping maintain the upkeep of the Wycombe Stroke Unit Garden, the new Stoke Mandeville allotment or Aylesbury head injury rehabilitation garden? These gardens are mainly used by patients, their families and NHS staff.

Not only would you be improving diagnostic services and treatment but also helping to support an individual’s future

How to get involved

If you have any comments on our newsletter or if you feel your business can get involved please reach out to our Head of Corporate Partnerships, Nigel Naylor-Smith via mobile 07867 823882, office phone 01494 734161, or through LinkedIn messaging, or by email at n.naylor-smith@nhs.net

Together we can continue to fund state-of-the-art medical equipment to drive the health of our local population and local communities.
