elcome to 2022! I hope you had a wonderful festive season with friends and family and wish you all a successful year ahead.

We have managed to navigate through some very tricky times over the last two years and it has been incredible to see how so many people have come together and adapted to overcome these challenges. I would like to once again thank you all for your support during this period and look forward to strengthening and growing our relationships going forward.

In the coming months Knight Frank will continue evolving our way of working and tweaking certain areas within our current business model in order to streamline in-house processes and further improve internal workflow, team motivation and client service.

We will also be specifically focusing on how we can improve our current offering to our agents, providing a model that differentiates us from other traditional agencies to further encourage strong performance – which will go hand in hand with boosting service delivery.

Our aim is to grow the residential agency by at least 20% this year, with our prime focus being on the recruitment of additional strong agents in certain areas and the further development of all our current agents and administration team.

I am sure you have set certain goals you hope to achieve in 2022 and whether they pertain to growing your business, improving certain aspects of your personal life, or both, I wish you all the best in achieving them.

This month, Dr Jenny Leslie – COO & Co-Founder of BioTech Africa – shares her insights on testing and travelling in today’s times.

The latter is what motivated us to implement drive-through testing sites throughout the Western Cape.’

r Jenny Leslie co-founded BioTech Africa in 2014. Jenny, who holds a PhD in Virology from the University of Glasgow, has many years of experience in the development and commercialisation of recombinant proteins used for antibody detection and the diagnosis of infectious diseases.

BioTech Africa was established with a vision to help the fight against HIV via the manufacture of recombinant proteins used in HIV rapid tests. Their products are exported around the world to manufacturers of HIV rapid tests, one of which is reimported back into South Africa by the National Department of Health (DoH). ​ In response to the current pandemic, they have developed recombinant proteins for COVID-19 serology screening: SARSCoV-2 nucleocapsid protein and spike (receptor binding domain) glycoprotein.

These are currently being exported for the manufacture of COVID-19 antibody screening tests in South Korea, China and Europe.

About BioSmart

COVID-19 Test Laboratory BioSmart, founded in 2014, is a division of BioTech Africa based in Zonnebloem, Cape Town. This biotechnology company’s core business is the manufacture of highly purified recombinant proteins that are used by diagnostic test kit manufacturers

and research institutions. Biotech Africa is ISO 13485 certified with an international customer base.

Dr Jenny Leslie on COVID-19 Testing and Travelling Since South Africa had a limited testing capacity, we decided to gear up the lab and become a registered COVID-19 testing facility. This involved passing numerous audits, developing new procedures, expanding the team and extending into the pathology sphere.

Two years ago, nobody envisioned their new roles or the challenges and opportunities – one of the challenges being the pricing of tests and one of the opportunities being making tests more accessible. The latter is what motivated us to implement drive-through testing sites throughout the Western Cape.

We also use anterior nasal swabs – approved by the FDA and CDC – which are less invasive and not as unpleasant as nasopharyngeal swabs.

In terms of rapid antigen tests, they have their place, for example testing individuals prior to being hospitalised to place them in the appropriate ward. However, a negative rapid test of a person who is symptomatic should always be confirmed with a PCR test, which, unfortunately, does not always happen. There’s a lot of capitalising on COVID-19 rapid testing.

There are different categories of tests. We use the Roche SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen Test which is more expensive than other tests, supported by our very strict quality management procedures and controls. The experience that we’ve had with mass event testing is that the cheaper products give false positives. This creates a lot of confusion and frustration for consumers and challenges for us.

In terms of travel, things become even more complicated. The ongoing confusion around travel restrictions is frustrating but understandable as every country has a different set of rules and guidelines which, of course, continue to change as new developments come to light.

Currently, we’re working with IATA Travel Pass, a mobile app that helps travellers store and manage their verified certifications for COVID-19 tests and vaccines. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 290 airlines or 82% of total air traffic. They support many areas of aviation activity and help formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues.

We’re also involved with a trusted traveller initiative namely PanaBIOS – a secure, standardised, tamper-proof transcontinental digital application suite for disease contagion monitoring, spatial risk factors analytics, mass testing, process traceability and outcomes tracking.

While there are many other initiatives and programmes out there, there is a lack of standardisation across the globe. But it’s understandable as we’re only two, going on three, years into this life-altering occurrence and we have been adapting as quickly as we can and working with what we have. The important thing is that ongoing efforts are being made.

BioSmart Tests

COVID-19 RT-PCR This is the best test available for the detection of the current SARS-CoV-2 infection. Next-day results are sent by email with a verifiable QR code suitable for travel purposes. This test will not indicate the variant, because it targets two N gene targets, not the S gene. A negative RT-PCR test is required and accepted by most airlines for travel.

receive same-day results if the sample is taken before 12:00 pm. If the sample is taken after 12:00 pm, results will be available before 12:00 pm the next day.

Rapid Antigen Test

Not wanting to continue in academic research for the time being, Jenny decided to pursue other passions and projects and later started a family as well.

Rapid Antigen Tests for COVID-19 are popular because they are cheap and the results are quick. They are good for quickly identifying positive patients, but negative results should always be confirmed by a RT-PCR test, especially if symptomatic.

Quantitative COVID-19 Antibody Test This test can be used to confirm that you have previously had COVID-19. This is a useful indicator of the amount of protective immunity you have following infection by the virus that causes COVID-19. A positive COVID-19 antibody result is used by some airlines/ countries for travel purposes.

Rapid COVID-19 Antibody Test This rapid test can be used to confirm that you have had COVID-19. It can indicate if you are still in the acute phase of infection and are therefore still infectious, or if you have fully recovered and no longer need to self-isolate. Since PCR tests performed within three months of recovery can produce false positive results, a positive COVID-19 antibody result is used by some airlines/ countries for travel purposes.

ABOUT DR JENNY LESLIE

After 15 years, she had an urge to get back into science, to join the fight against HIV and use her PhD. The timing was perfect as a now former business partner presented her with a great plan – making recombinant proteins that are the active ingredients in in vitro diagnostic tests. These recombinant proteins – that bind to HIV positive antibodies – are what make HIV rapid tests work. If one is manufacturing HIV rapid tests, 60% of the cost is attributed to that protein which is the active pharmaceutical ingredient.

So, the business plan was to set up and establish a laboratory in Cape Town to make these proteins. Using the technology they had developed and refined, they were able to make a whole suite of proteins for detecting human infectious diseases, such as hepatitis C, amongst many others. Today they have about 35 different proteins in their catalogue.

Due to COVID-19, they then moved into making the proteins for the relevant tests.

In which countries have you worked and what did you love about them?

I’ve worked in different industry sectors which took me to China, Hong Kong, Kenya and the United States.

During the first lockdown we found ourselves in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. It was here, via just an internet connection, that I coached my staff to create the nucleocapsid protein in the lab. With a 12-hour time difference and great urgency to overcome, it was phenomenal to create a product.

What keeps you interested and inspired in general?

Being at the forefront and understanding the science of what’s going on. And the science is amazing at the moment. The fast development of COVID-19 vaccines.

CRISPR (gene-editing technology) and the use of SHERLOCK (a method for identifying specific sequences of genetic material in a sample using CRISPR) for point-of-care diagnostic and molecular diagnostics and how they’re evolving and adapting. There are so many different aspects but there aren’t enough hours in the day so you’ve got to choose which avenues to pursue.

We love South Africa and Africa and have recently been to Namibia and Botswana. Other destinations we’ve been fortunate enough to visit via sailing include French Polynesia (including Marquesas Islands, Tuamotu Islands and Bora Bora), Bay of Biscay, Galician Coastline, Canary Islands, Caribbean (including Bonaire and Curaçao), Tonga, Samoa, Wallis and Futuna, Fiji…

The lifestyle is just incredible; not knowing what the next day holds and going where the wind blows.

You arrive in these remote places; wildernesses where there’s nobody.

Many of the islands are just coral atolls and you’re stand-up paddling – we call it dry snorkelling – and seeing all this life and it’s amazing. We’re very privileged to be able to explore these places that are really untouched.

Career highlights?

I was pretty happy when I got my PPL (Private Pilot License) to fly helicopters and of course my PhD was my biggest academic achievement.

Securing funding for and building BioTech Africa was without a doubt the biggest career highlight.

Any advice for young people starting out in your industry?

Visualise it, make it happen and don’t give up. Keep trying. Do what you’ve got to do. Be adaptable and aggressive.

Witteboomen A Wonderful Neighbourhood Boasting a Provincial Heritage Site

T

ucked between Glen Alpine, Eagles Nest, Silverhurst and Bel Ombre, you will find the wonderful Witteboomen – an exclusive neighbourhood in the prestigious Upper Constantia.

Wittebomen, translated as white trees, was named for the abundance of silver trees that were present on the land during the Dutch occupation of the Cape.

The silver tree’s botanical name is Leucadendron Argenteum. The latter, Argenteum, is Latin for silver while Leucadendron is the botanical family name of the protea species. So, surprisingly, the silver tree is in fact a protea – not to mention the tallest of the varieties.

De Hel Nature Area on the lower eastern slopes of Table Mountain is a lush reserve within Witteboomen. The area is a Provincial Heritage Site that protects an indigenous forest and river valley which are home to the endangered Knysna warbler and the endangered western leopard toad.

GARDENING WITH FATIMA

Starting a garden must be one of the most exciting and fulfilling things you can ever undertake. You are creating a special place of your own where you can spend your leisure time for years and years to come.

STYLE, FUNCTION AND INTEREST

pieces that work in your interiors. There should also be some connection between the interiors and exteriors – they should complement each other.

There are three things to keep in mind when creating a garden: style, function and interest.

Soil

Style

Learn about your soil, about the angles of the sun, which way your site faces, where the wind comes from, where you need to screen out neighbours for privacy and even which boundaries you should leave open to borrow views of your surroundings.

Firstly, you must look at your house and assess its style. A garden that matches or complements the mood of the house is often recommended. That is to say, a modern home might benefit from a modern garden with strong architectural forms; a Cape Dutch house from a softer, more traditional garden.

Function Style will be guided by personal tastes and needs. So, when working with clients it is essential to have a detailed conversation to find out not only what sort of gardens they are drawn to, but secondly, how they intend to use their gardens. A garden should be fit for its purpose. A family might want a lawn for children to play on, whereas a retired couple would prefer less maintenance that perhaps paving or gravel will provide.

Interest We have all become more visually sophisticated, so a garden that is bland with no interesting features is bound to lack appeal. Statues, pots, change of levels, trellises, pergolas, water features, varied materials for paths – all these are elements that can engage the eye. Even a small garden requires focal points; destinations for both the eyes and the feet. A garden should draw you in and entice you to move from one area to another.

Planning Starting a garden takes a great deal of research and strategising. But the more thought and planning you put into your new garden, the more successful it will likely be.

It is a good idea to connect your landscape designer with your architect early on in the project.

A garden, just like a house, needs to be constructed first and decorated last. Your plants being your décor. And do not believe that a smaller garden should only be planted with tiny plants. Think of that large statement armoire in your living room.

Established Flora If you are fortunate to have established trees and shrubs then treasure them, work with them – even move them if you have to, but do not destroy or discard them. Age is a priceless commodity. An ancient tree cannot be replaced in your lifetime.

Small Can Be Stunning Size does not matter. Even the smallest garden can become a gem. As an illustration, take this small, but incredibly interesting and exciting garden in a Cape retirement complex. The owner – an individual of immense taste and discernment, who relocated from a very large, grand garden – wanted to create the same traditional elegance on a reduced scale.

The road frontage towards the house has an open village feel with very large and established shady plane trees. However, one verge merges into the other with no discerning difference or eye-catching attractions. This front garden at the end of the street needed to be welcoming yet screened in a gentle way from the road.

The owner brought two large bronze statues of deer from her previous home that were strategically placed to look up the road in welcome. These statues were rooted in a circular bed of hydrangeas that will thrive in the heavy shade, underplanted with alstroemerias (Inca lilies) that will fill the gaps until the hydrangeas are established.

At the top of this semicircular bed we placed a large, well-established magnolia soulangeana (saucer magnolia). The spring flowering magnolia will be a feast for the eyes when the hydrangeas are dormant.

Imitation lawn with a couple of small steps down to Klompie brick paving in front of the house completed this very neat and easy to maintain layout. The Klompie bricks were laid in a herringbone pattern to direct the eye and create depth and illusion of space.

The magnolia is sited at the apex of a strong axis that runs through the open front door directly through the house to a water feature with a bold classical statue in the back garden beyond.

Another key element of any garden planning is to stand in front of your windows and look out. We do, after all, spend a great deal of time indoors looking out. Every window or French door pane presents an opportunity to create a picture.

From the study of this house, for instance, one looks out onto a bed filled with lilies and pink standard roses, presenting a soft and immensely attractive view.

The garden to the rear of the house presented drainage problems that needed to be overcome. Metres of clay had to be dug out and replaced with good top soil.

Subsoil drainage also had to be installed before the area could be levelled and

raised in the east corner. A good lesson in the importance of structure before any planting.

Eugenia and viburnum hedges were used to frame this garden, demarcate boundaries and establish neat, clean boundary lines – but leaving portholes that provide borrowed views to scenic neighbouring gardens. A side walkway connects the front with the back garden through a welcoming arch of a climbing rose to lure you forward.

At the back, Klompie brickwork in a herringbone pattern was again used to create a tidy, flat and easy to maintain area for table and chairs, looking onto the classical water feature and square bed with roses and lilies.

Here the colour scheme is soft with varying plant heights for extra interest. Carefully positioned pots with mature trees from the previous home were used to add gravitas and age.

All the careful planning and thought that went into this garden manifested in something unique and special; ultimately a place that offers easy flow from inside to outdoors.

CATCHING UP WITH THE ROYAL CAPE YACHT CLUB

After featuring the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) in our January 2021 issue, we wanted to check in. And we are so glad we did as much has transpired since. Lindani Mchunu, RCYC Academy Manager, filled us in.

‘The Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) – who gave us funding just two years ago of R2.2 million – has done it again. The Royal Cape Yacht Club Sailing Academy received R3.2 million from TETA for two years to train 30 learners up to skipper’s level.

The news came after a very difficult period for us during which we lost students and went back to a model of the Academy the Club refers to as ‘Academy 101’. The bare minimum. For a while, during the course of this year, I felt like we were moving backwards. I thought about all the energy I have put into this academy to make sure the government and private sector know about us and the great work we are doing.

In 2020, when we had to let Academy kids

go, I thought to myself, ‘How will we ever claw our way out of this one?’ Even my committee was starting to lose hope.

When I opened the email stating our funding application had been approved, I was with our senior instructor, Sibu Sizathu. We hugged each other like longlost relatives. It was a special moment for both of us. He expressed how worried he had been, how worried the instructors and students had been. All the questions – Will the Academy carry on? Will we welcome new faces? Will we keep spreading the word? – evaporated. Sibu thanked me for all the effort I put in to secure this funding.

I thanked him for not jumping ship when things were tough.

In 2020, I applied for funding from the National Lotteries Commission to build a state-of-the-art Academy Centre. They declined my application three times. The wind was blown out of my sails. The TETA application was submitted in January of 2021, but I only received the response in November. I was running on reserve fuel for most of the year. I also lost my best friend, my childhood friend. Then life brought me this news. It was a bittersweet moment, but it was a welcome relief. Today, the Rio Campaign funding trail rages on and the Academy Centre is still a serious objective of mine.’

RCYC NEWS 50th Anniversary of Cape2Rio Sailing Race Date Announced Cape2Rio 2023, The Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town in conjunction with the Iate Clube do Rio are proud to announce they will proceed with the running of another edition of this Iconic Ocean Racing Classic. The start date is currently mooted as Sunday 2 January 2023.

It attracted an international entry and was won by Ocean Spirit, co-skippered by world-renowned sailor Sir Robin Knox Johnson – who had previously become the first man to sail single-handed, non-stop around the world.

Now, coming up to the 50th anniversary of the first edition of the race, RCYC Commodore Neil Gregory has taken the bold step of beginning preparations for this event and looks to generate a fleet that mirrors the heyday of this ocean classic. A blue water dash across the South Atlantic Ocean between the tourist capitals of South Africa and Brazil, skirting north of the notorious South Atlantic High in glorious sunshine. Champagne sailing much like the famous Transpacific Yacht Race from Long Beach to Honolulu.

This South Atlantic classic has attracted many great teams over the years, led by the

luminaries of ocean racing past and present – all vying for line and handicap honours in both the monohull and multihull divisions.

The majestic South Atlantic Trophy has graced many a famous sailor’s mantlepiece and we hope to continue this fine tradition.

It is the intention of the organisers to position and promote the Cape2Rio 2023 as a bucket list ocean race. Once again attracting top-level owners and crews, as well as sailors from across the spectrum of our sport wishing to undertake an ocean passage and enjoy the cut and thrust of competitive sailing. Race preparation, navigation, risk assessment, strategy and sheer determination are integral to winning an ocean race. This applies to all competitors, no matter what boat you sail.

Referring to the timing of the event, Commodore Gregory noted that December 2022 was going to be a busy time for sailing – both racing and cruising.

The City of Cape Town will be hosting The Ocean Race fleet at that time while the Oyster World Rally and World ARC Rally will also be visiting our shores. We will be looking to market the Cape2Rio Race to these visitors, using our event as a feeder into the busy Caribbean season that commences with the RORC C600. The Caribbean season provides fantastic events for all classes of boats to enjoy our sport and its camaraderie, Antigua Sailing Week, being a highlight for many sailors globally.

We are entering the New Year with a lot of optimism and while we know that working from home might remain a reality as offices adapt and adopt new working times, strategies and options, we do not think this needs to be a bad thing. In fact, creating a little oasis you or the whole family can benefit from, we feel, is an important part of home design.

Finding and Creating the Space Ideally, your WFH space needs to be private, comfortable and cool.

We recommend a space that, if possible, enjoys natural light (but not direct sunlight), allows for natural ventilation and has access to a view. Like a bed, we often underestimate the time we spend in a home office, so working on making it special is important.

Having said that, a space for desk work need not be large. Often, too much space is set aside for a home office, when really, the space should be more clever than cumbersome.

Creative Ideas The idea of a workspace can often be turned on its head.

In a small space, perhaps it fulfils the role of an office in the morning and converts into a TV or reading corner for the kids in the afternoon…

We sometimes refer to ideas such as a ‘programmed’ passage, where an otherwise overlooked space in an area – for example, a nook in a wider passage

– can be converted into a working spot.

Even a cleverly converted cupboard can be the perfect alcove for one’s PC and a note board. We are often inspired by the savvy solutions that are posted on social media and pioneering space usage that is required from individuals abroad.

Furniture that ‘Works’ One of the most important items we recommend investing in is a suitable office chair. Comfort is key and an ergonomic chair is essential for overall workplace health and well-being.

Again, much like a bed, your chair should support and move with you. A chair that can adapt in height is also far more forgiving to the desk options you might need to ‘work’ with.

Furniture pieces that can temporarily conceal clutter in a small space are also worth considering. There comes a time in the day when one needs to pack away and acknowledge that one is, in fact, at home.

The Cape is notorious for its capacity to enchant outdoor enthusiasts, delight gastronomes and satisfy adventure seekers with its landscapes, culinary offerings and activities.

This combination makes healthy living increasingly attractive, a fact that more and more locals and visitors are starting to appreciate and take advantage of.

Spending Time Outdoors There is something special about spending quality time in a safe, natural environment – whether it is a manicured city garden or a countryside forest, a desert landscape or on a riverbank.

But it is more than special, it is beneficial for us. One study has shown that spending at least 2 hours a week in nature is associated with good health and well-being. Research on the topic continues to expand and the findings are fascinating.

The Rainbow Nation that is South Africa is nothing if not rich in history and culture.

H

ere are a few interesting and noteworthy historical facts about our fair Cape you may or may not know.

1. Table Mountain is one of the oldest in the world.

At first, it was simply inhabited by birds, seals, tortoises and other wildlife. Later it was used for replenishing supplies, exchanging mail and feeding livestock.

Not long after it became a place for the banishment, exile and isolation of prisoners, patients and socially unacceptable groups. It was also used as a military outpost before WWII. Only in 1961 did it become a maximum security prison.

Table Mountain is 240-million years old, making it one of the oldest mountains in the world.

2. The first heart transplant in the world was performed in Cape Town.

On 3 December 1967, in Groote Schuur Hospital, Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant.

3. The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest existing building in South Africa.

The Castle of Good Hope, originally Kasteel de Goede Hoop in Dutch, is a bastion fort and provincial heritage site. It is the oldest existing building in South Africa and considered the best preserved example of a Dutch East India Company fort following restorations completed in the 1980s.

4. Cape Town is home to the oldest ‘garden’ in South Africa.

The Company’s Garden – a heritage site and park located in central Cape Town – is the oldest garden in South Africa. It is loved for its bird aviary, botanicallyand historically valuable trees, rose

While Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias planted the cross at Cape Point in 1488 and Jan van Riebeeck and Dutch colonists arrived in Table Bay in 1652, the first inhabitants of the Cape were Khoisan people. Genetic research has revealed that these hunter-gatherers were once the largest group of humans approximately 22,000 years ago.

8. The first wine from Cape grapes was made in 1659.

The vineyard was planted in 1655 by Jan van Riebeeck (the first governor of the Cape) for wine and table grapes.

9. The Noon Gun has been fired since 1806.

The Noon Gun, a cannon on Signal Hill in Cape Town, is fired every day at 12:00 noon (except on Sundays and public holidays). The resounding boom is one of the city’s oldest traditions which was originally intended to announce the arrival of ships to traders who would then bring fresh produce down to the shore. There are in fact two cannons, the one being a backup.

10. The first Table Mountain Aerial Cableway was completed in 1929.

It took four years to build and a ‘car’ could carry up to 25 people. Today’s state-of-the-art Rotair cable cars were installed in 1997. They can hold 65 visitors while offering 360° city views.

7. South Africa only gained independence from Britain in the early 1900s.

Before that it was colonised not only by the British but first the Dutch, then the British, then the Dutch again and finally the British before gaining independence.

The expansive Table Mountain National Park is home to interesting species. Here are just a few of them.

The Cape Porcupine

Angulate Tortoise

The Cape porcupine – also known as the South African porcupine – is the world’s largest porcupine. It is also Africa’s largest rodent and one of the largest living rodents in the world.

The hardy angulate tortoise, with its striking markings, is endemic to Southern Africa.

Hystrix Africaeaustralis

Native to Southern and Central Africa, these monogamous and nocturnal creatures eat mostly plant material.

When attacked or cornered, the porcupine will freeze or charge, respectively. The latter involves stabbing its attacker with its quills. Retreating into its burrow is another option with its quills blocking the entrance.

Cape Grey Mongoose Galerella pulverulenta

They may not have known what it was at the time, but many individuals have seen a Cape grey mongoose (aka small grey mongoose) dart across a road at some stage.

This small mammal, endemic to Southern Africa, is roughly 60 centimetres in length and sports round ears, a pointed muzzle, a slender speckled body, a long bushy tail and short legs.

While mostly terrestrial, these diurnal creatures can climb shrubs or trees to rest or catch prey and stand on their hind legs to scan for danger.

Chersina Angulata

Males differ from females not only in size and tail length, but in terms of shell dimension and shell profile as well.

A protected species in South Africa and Namibia, it is the only tortoise on the African continent that boasts a single throat shield. This shield is used to overturn other males in battle – typically during mating season. When it is not mating season, tortoises are loners.

To protect itself against threats, the angulate tortoise will retract its head, feet and tail into the shell. It can also eject, even spray, the liquid contents of its bowels in defence.

Cape Peninsula Moss Frog Arthroleptella Lightfooti

Other names for this small, endemic amphibian include the Cape chirping frog and lightfoot’s moss frog. Being high-pitched and brief, its chirp is often mistaken for that of a cricket.

While the Cape Peninsula moss frog is a common one, not a lot of people have seen it. Perhaps it is because it prefers to inhabit seepages and lives amongst leaf litter and thick vegetation. It is also only roughly 20 mm in size.

Colour in adults can range from blueblack to pale greenish brown, with or without a dorsal stripe. What is really interesting about these tiny dark frogs is the fact that their toes are not webbed. And, when it comes to pupil characteristics, theirs are horizontally elliptical.

Dassie (Rock Hyrax) Procavia Capensis

The rock hyrax, Table Mountain’s most common animal, goes by many names – dassie, Cape hyrax, rock rabbit and coney.

A medium-sized terrestrial mammal – about 4.5 kg in weight – it communicates through barks, growls, squeals and snorts.

Their robust bodies are covered by rough, brownish-grey coats with black hairs found on the centre of the back and lighter patches above the eyes.

These herbivores choose to live on and around boulders, cliffs and outcrops or piles of rock near vegetation they prefer to feed on.

Dassies play an important role in the ecosystem, being a source of food for many predators including black eagles, caracals and snakes.

Bizarrely enough, based on DNA evidence, the dassie is considered to be the closest living relative of the African elephant.

‘My father started out as an art lecturer and painted full time until he passed away in 2019. I have been drawing and painting since I can remember... I suppose it’s in my blood!’

ABOUT MARTIN DE KOCK Martin de Kock was born in 1967 in South Africa to South African parents and mostly grew up in Pretoria.

After studying Architecture for one year in 1986 at the Technikon Pretoria (now Tshwane University of Technology – TUT), he decided he needed to ‘make art’ for the rest of his life and so changed to graphic design, completing his fouryear National Diploma in Graphic Design at TUT in 1990. In April 1993, he participated in his first group exhibition at Pretoria Arts Association and numerous times after that until 2018.

Two years later, in 1995, Martin worked in Europe where he participated in a group exhibition in Paris and was a finalist in the New Signatures Art Competition in 2009.

Nevertheless, Martin launched his own paint and paint-art company and has done paintings and other paintwork for many dignitaries and celebrities in South Africa and abroad. He moved to Plettenberg Bay 10 years ago and has since focused solely on his artwork.

In 2019, Martin started working with Gallop Hill Gallery and has been represented by Dijonne to date.

Martin has always been in love with oil paint.

‘The fact that you can layer and play with the paint on the canvas makes for interesting outcomes. Oil-based charcoal also forms an integral part of my paintings, allowing me to draw as well as paint on one canvas.’

The next year, he underwent a brain operation for a blocked vein.

‘During the operation I had a severe stroke. It left me paralysed on my right side (I painted with my right hand) and helpless in a wheelchair. After about 2 years – with lots of determination, help and love from my parents, friends,

‘Being here on the farm, where my wife and I live, with not a soul around for a while to distract me, was actually a gift. Now I value my health and spending time with close friends and family more than ever.’

He has recently discovered sculpting and would like to explore this medium more in future.

When not creating art, Martin loves to travel and visit art galleries across the globe.

The most rewarding part of his career is being able to create his own unique art and it being appreciated by another living soul.

‘Enjoying great food and wine on a South African road trip is hard to beat!

In addition to that, being in nature and doing some gardening gives my soul a break.’

‘When someone comes into the gallery or sees my art on social media and connects with it somehow, it gives me the greatest joy!

During the last two years, he has had time to focus on his art; to find his true identity as an artist.

Martin is primarily inspired by colour.
