A Monthly Update from Knight Frank Residential South Africa

I

t has been an incredibly fast start to 2022 in both residential property sales and rentals in Cape Town and all indicators look positive for a strong year in the property market. This will be welcomed by the industry after challenging times and we anticipate a solid period of growth and opportunity in the coming months and years.

What is most encouraging is the huge pick up in sales on the upper end of the market. Over the last few years, sales have been dominated by first-time homebuyers and investors looking to buy predominantly in the R1m – R3m price range. The last couple of months however, January in particular, have shown an incredible resurgence in properties in some of the most sought-after locations in both the Southern Suburbs and on the Atlantic Seaboard which suggests that buyer sentiment is definitely on the rise and Cape Town is firmly on the map of luxury homebuyers.

At Knight Frank, we are constantly hard at work to present our clients’ homes in the most effective way to prospective buyers and tenants. W

ith over 40 years’ experience, Anne Porter is still one of South Africa’s leading property professionals. This month, she shares what a career in property requires and what makes it so rewarding.

Broadly speaking, what does a career in property entail?

A career in property requires a passion for property, a passion for people and commitment to your chosen career.

It requires hard work, a desire for knowledge and information and the ability to think outside the box. It is not a 9 to 5 job and unless you are prepared to give 100% commitment it is not for you. It is also important that your partner and/or children are on

board. There are many interruptions, with clients often requiring immediate attention at tricky times so tolerance on the part of the family is essential.

You also require a professional qualification and time devoted to studying while learning on the job.

Managing time effectively is also essential.

FOR THE LOVE OF PROPERTY - A CONVERSATION WITH ANNE PORTER

One must be able to communicate clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing.

A Real Estate Practitioner performs a quasi-legal function and is responsible for drafting clauses and preparing sales documents which in turn form a legal and binding sales or rental contract.

Empathy, understanding and respect are needed as you are dealing with people’s most valuable assets at a time that is always emotional, no matter what the motivation for selling or buying is.

I was fortunate and had a very understanding and helpful husband and children who tolerated interrupted mealtimes and social engagements and maintained that my alter ego was a telephone. Despite both daughters vowing not to become involved in property I am very proud of both of them. Caroline qualified as an Estate Agent while still at school and Susan is the Managing Director of Knight Frank Residential and also Head of Knight Frank Valuations, South Africa.

How would you differentiate between a career in property as a means to an end VS a career in property as a lifelong passion?

Someone who regards a career in property as a means to an end simply sees it as a way to earn a living.

A person who regards a career in property as a lifelong passion gains satisfaction from and takes great pride in a deal concluded ahead of the financial aspect of commission earned. They are continuously

upgrading their skill set and updating their knowledge and remain curious about all aspects of property and tools to better their performance and service.

How is working for Knight Frank different from working for other real estate firms?

Knight Frank is internationally recognised as the most prestigious real estate brand in the world with 384 offices across 51 territories and more than 16,000 people in all sectors of the property industry. The company prides itself on offering the most ethical and professional service to all its clients and gives their staff the tools they need to perform their duties to the highest standards. It is an absolute privilege to be part of a firm with such a formidable reputation and knowledge base.

In what ways is working in real estate fulfilling?

I enjoy working with people and enjoy the challenge of putting deals together.

It is immensely satisfying to advise and assist clients and friends with their property-related problems and I am thrilled when a deal finally comes together, regardless of the price or size of the commission. It is important to remember that in most cases, a residential agent is handling the most important asset the client owns and every client deserves the same attention whether it is a R1 million or R100 million transaction.

How are new Knight Frank team members sourced or selected?

Referrals, word of mouth, clients, personal contacts and employment agencies are all sources for possible new team members. Once you have a potential candidate, there is an interview process, references are checked and a personality profile must be completed to ensure that the potential team member is a good fit for the team.

What are some of the strengths and great characteristics shared by Knight Frank agents and supporting team members?

Passion, commitment, love of property and most importantly, a sense of humour.

What have you learnt through the years – knowledge gained, skills honed, challenges met, lessons internalised and rewards reaped?

I cannot think of a more rewarding and challenging profession to have been part of. I have enjoyed every aspect of it, whether it has been sales, letting, valuations, participating in professional organisations and the international experiences gained from being part of a global organisation.

Any advice for those starting out in the industry today?

Work hard, work consistently, do the basics well and do not expect immediate rewards.

Harfield Village A Chelsea-esque Haven in the Southern Suburbs

A

lso known as Lower Claremont, Harfield Village is one of the many coveted areas in Cape Town’s Southern Town’s Southern Suburbs. Suburbs.

In this sought-after neighbourhood, the shady avenues – named after counties of England – are dotted with pretty Victorian and Edwardian cottages, many of which are semi-detached.

The yearly carnival Harfield hosted along its quaint and vibrant 2nd Avenue added to its distinct village-feel over the years.

Surrounding Harfield Village are the suburbs of Kenilworth and Claremont Upper, making it very accessible. Plus, it is in close proximity to many amenities and popular attractions. Gardening with Fatima The Magic of Roses

While roses require hard work, dedication and nurture, they can be immensely rewarding.

W

ith despondency over climate change and a need to preserve water, roses have somehow taken a hit in popularity in favour of indigenous and endemic species. However – if you put aside visions of architectural beds of colour-coordinated floribunda (or long pergolas of cascading climbers) and scale down your desire for roses to even just a few hardy icebergs amongst your beds of gaura and felicia – you can still achieve stunning blooms of summer displays in an eco-conscious manner.

For the Love of Roses In minimalist contemporary gardens, roses add that sense of romance that most gardens can benefit from. They also invite insects such as bees and butterflies into your garden as much as any other flowering shrub.

They might require some extra care, but when all is said and done, what plant does not respond to nurture and the right nutrition?

Beware: Once you plant your first rose bush, you are likely to add and add until you have a collection. Because the thing about roses is that they are so versatile. They are short and tall, wide and sprawling, formal or rambling and informal. Their blooms are slim and elegant or plump and redolent. They come in every colour under the sun – bar blue, for now. They are all things to all gardeners.

History Roses are ancient… as in 35 million years old! Thousands of years ago, cultivated roses featured in Asian gardens, wall paintings appeared in Egyptian tombs and large rose gardens were established in Rome.

Cape of Good Hope. After all, the Cape, having been the maritime half-way house between Europe and Asia since 1652, was introduced to a great many rose varieties over the years.

A Rose by Any Other Name There are more than 150 species and thousands of hybrids to choose from. What makes it even more confusing is the fact that some of the same roses are sold under different names. The reason for this is that cultivar names are often trademarked.

So, if you see a picture online of a rose you covet, show it to a specialist rose grower and they should be able to match it to a species they stock. Best though to stick to locally named roses unless they are David Austin roses which are trademarked.

Giving a name to a new rose is costly. We have our own very special rose names, most notably Archbishop Tutu, a fine red climber.

Fast forward to the early 1980s, a group called the Texas Rose Rustlers started searching for old-garden roses (OGRs) – that is, those bred before 1867. This included traipsing through private properties, farms and even cemeteries in Texas in the hope of rediscovering old rose varieties.

Locally, the most famous of these rose hunters is Gwen Fagan, wife of famous architect, the late Gawie Fagan. She published a definitive book on old roses of the Cape, Roses at the

Caring for Roses Although there are rules for rose care, climate change has brought about seasonal shifts so you cannot always go by the book. Last year, for instance, spring arrived in October/ November.

Pruning: In South Africa, winter pruning used to start in June but is now more beneficial towards the end of July. As a rule of thumb, if you want to ensure a flush of blooms in say March for a garden function, you will need to prepare – through deadheading and light pruning – eight to ten weeks beforehand.

Feeding: Remember, roses are semidormant in December, January and February, with the flush of blooms in autumn and spring. So, you should do your heavy root feeding in January and February, then in March, feed with 3.1.5. (nitrogen for leaves, phosphorus for roots and potassium for flowers) to assist those flower flushes. Only prune lightly in the summer months.

Some Quick Tips Because they are repeat bloomers and high performers, giving you such splendid displays throughout the summer and sometimes even into autumn and winter, they deserve sufficient feeding with a rose cocktail and a foliage feed every two weeks as well as preventative sprays against things such as black spot or aphids.

As always, pay attention to soil health. Feed your soil with organic compost all year round. Some nurseries sell special mixtures that include peanut shells for aeriation.

A good handful of Bounce Back pellets around your rose bushes, just below the top soil, will encourage root growth and the growth of all-important, healthy soil bacteria.

The rule of thumb with potted roses is feed the plant, not the soil. Salt build-up in the potting soil inhibits the absorption of water so best to use a slow release fertiliser and bone meal.

If you spot leaf yellowing, spray with a solution of Epsom salts to make up for any magnesium deficiency (instead of placing Epsom salts on the soil around the plant).

And use terracotta pots rather than plastic as clay breathes.

Unless you are an absolute perfectionist, a little black spot on a leaf is no big deal. The plants will survive this as it will also survive

some infestation of aphids. Problems arise mostly when you plant roses en masse. We all need to keep biodiversity in mind.

3. How do you start your day?

Very often by dealing with WhatsApp and email messages, before I’ve even had a chance to get out of bed, shower, breakfast or dress. This may continue throughout the rest of my day and night. I am grateful for this and love being busy.

As an ex-Joburger since seven years ago, I love it here for every reason that people who lived in Johannesburg and who now live in Cape Town do.

Lower Claremont – which is made up of the areas known as Lynfrae, Mayfair, Palmyra Village, Victoria South and Presidents Mile – is an area that attracts families that want to settle down and experience a most convenient suburban lifestyle in a residential area with lots of big trees, mountain views, gorgeous parks within easy walking distance from their spacious old houses with character – many of which have been fully restored or gutted, stripped and beautifully redesigned, modernised and renovated. There are many good

Mouille Point A Special Suburb with Undeniable Appeal

M

THE INTERNET OF THINGS

In a nutshell, the Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing network of smart devices that provide rich data.

T

hese electronics are not traditional computing devices, but rather other objects (or groups of objects) connected to the internet to send data, receive instructions or both via embedded sensors, software, processors and other technologies – in real time.

Smart versions of traditional devices such as cars, gadgets, lights, refrigerators and thermostats, amongst other appliances, can all be connected to the IoT. Here are a few IoT categories: • • • • • • • • •

Connected appliances Wearable health monitors Smart home security systems Ultra-high speed wireless internet Shipping container and logistics tracking Biometric cybersecurity scanners Autonomous farming equipment Wireless inventory trackers Smart factory equipment

What this means, essentially, is that data processing and analytics are no longer restricted to that part of the online world that requires a keyboard, mouse and screen. Rather, it now extends to tangible things. With minimal human intervention, certain appliances and gadgets can simply take instructions from the network to perform a task without further assistance.

The Future These smart devices empowered by the internet are transforming distribution centres, factories, farms, healthcare, homes, lifestyles and transportation. In fact, the future of IoT has the potential to be limitless. However, as with many things, there are some drawbacks.

Where Can I SUP? You can typically arrange boards through SUP Cape Town which facilitates rentals in the V&A Waterfront, at the CTICC, at the One & Only (in their private canals when permitted), at Intaka Island (when water levels allow) and by Clifton 4th beach (from December to February).

For short-term use, choose between a 30-minute and one-hour session. You can also rent an inflatable board, complete with paddle and pump, for 24 hours or longer – depending on availability.

Note: SUPing is a weather-dependent activity so be sure to discuss ideal days and times with your preferred operator.

SUPing is a great activity for parties, team building and company functions. SUP Cape Town can arrange a convenient venue and rotate the group members. The party board can generally hold between 8 to 10 people.

An essential part of creating the ideal sanctuary is all about surrounding yourself with the things you love. Infusing spaces with colours, textures and objects you adore – elements that instil a sense of serenity and belonging.

H

aving recently moved to England, to be closer to our children, I had the opportunity to reinvent our new space to create a lovely family home base. It was a significant project and an important one that made settling in all the more satisfying.

Henshilwood – a professional installer of pictures, mirrors and master of collage.

The golden thread is an integration and curation of objects that tell stories – my journeys of travelling to and living in South Africa, Hong Kong and England.

We spend so much time in our kitchens which is often the first and last room we visit in the morning and before retiring in the evening.

It is also a room that brings people together.

That is why I chose to fill it with art – including some of my best pieces – on every single wall.

Here is just a taste of how I went about it, with the help of fellow South African, Nick

The Kitchen

The vintage antique plate rack from England, displayed on the left page, is used not only for crockery and breadboards but interior and recipe books as well – a special piece from Spencer Swaffer Antiques in Arundel.

The blue and white plates at the top are from Liberty. Below, left to right, we have a white Malawi chair, Bamileke stool (that complements multiple settings, from safari lodges to casual verandas) and an ottoman upholstered in Ralph Lauren fabric.

BOO, by Colbert Mashile, is a fun piece that always makes me smile. The goat is dressed

up and personified as a symbol to show happiness to his ancestors. Indigo Zig Zag blinds, designed by textile designer Debby Tenquist from Botanica Trading, were made from sustainably printed linen.

Below BOO is a wire chicken bought from a street artist in Cape Town along with collected vintage blue and white terrines with white hyacinth bulbs for a splash of green.

The antique Chinese robe is part of our collection from our Hong Kong days.

Above that is a Chinoiserie panel painted by master mural artist Greg Pullen.

Also showcased in the kitchen is a large oil painting on linen – Chasing Fireflies – by Caryn Scrimgeour (represented by the Everard Read Galleries in South Africa and London). This is one of my most precious

pieces and is also loved by the family. It speaks to my absolute love of table settings and passion for detail.

Below this piece is a Block & Chisel server, a Dutch bread bin on a vintage trug and antique breakfast stools. Combined they make for a creative and inspiring yet lived in and welcoming space. The server is constantly used for preparing and serving food and there is always a recipe book open.

The Dining Room This room featured right is a casual extension of the kitchen where you can have breakfast or flip open your laptop. It opens onto a potted terrace garden offering a splash of green in the middle of London.

The table, custom-made in Knysna, offers mixed seating (part of my signature) in the form of two Malawi chairs on the right, painted white and an antique riempie bench on the left.

On the back wall, left, is an ink and pencil portrait by Lionel Smit.

When it comes to enjoying meals, I believe it is important to set the table, even if it is just for two. Especially if you have made a bit of an effort, five minutes of setting up can really add to the sensory experience. And use the wares that are special to you – live with and revel in your beautiful collections rather than save them for special occasions.

The hand-painted boerendelft deep plates in the featured image were made by South African ceramicist Jacques Erasmus, owner and chef of Hemelhuijs in Cape Town.

They were sold through De Nagmaal, a farm-style shop in Montagu (also selling online). The shop is an extension of the Jonkmanshof guesthouse brand which forms part of Hemelhuijs. A collection we have experienced in its entirety and are very fond of.

The placemats are from my favourite nursery in London, Petersham Nurseries; the cutlery from Dubai; the serviettes from Babylonstoren; and the potted poinsettias leftover from Christmas.

The Lounge It is not about installing art as much as installing the whole story. So, as with the rest of the house, the lounge is enveloped by collage walls featuring memories and beloved pieces including a Picasso.

Neutral grasscloth wallpaper adorns the walls. The Queen, by artist Olivier, is surrounded by a collection of vintage ceramic platters. The sculptures below are

by South African sculptor Theo Megaw.

Also in the lounge, shown on page 44, we have a large Beezy Bailey oil painting and below this, two treasured William Kentridge pieces. The bunny ceramic plates were produced by studio potter Martin Haines. Then, the black dining room chairs are from Cécile and Boyd while the fabric on the armchair is from Hertex Fabrics.

The curtains, both in the living room and dining room, were made by Paisley and

Bloom with Warwick Fabrics and finally the terrace furniture is from The Private House Company in Johannesburg.

The Bedroom This extremely spacious and wonderfully light bedroom with its high ceiling and huge open trusses presented a wonderful opportunity to play with vertical space.

by Phung Quoc Tri, a contemporary Vietnamese artist. Behind them, Thibaut wallpaper.

lamps flanking the beds. On the bed, cushions with white French linen slips, an Erica Bartholomae cyanotype print and a hand-knitted blanket. Completing the look is a couch with a vintage African indigo hand-dyed fabric from Artefect in Cape Town.

Work, Live and Play in an Artsy, Affluent Neighbourhood

T

he popular suburb of Gardens sits between Oranjezicht and Tamboerskloof, just south of Cape Town City Centre. Its name is likely attributed to the fact that it formed part of Jan van Riebeeck’s original gardens.

Here, in the higher elevations of the City Bowl, directly below Table Mountain, there are many attractive apartments and houses with high ceilings and wooden floors predominantly inhabited by young professionals. In between and surrounding these residences are numerous upmarket amenities and attractions such as restaurants and hangouts, retail stores and shops, businesses belonging to the creative industry and boutique accommodation for visitors.

Kloof Street in particular beckons with an eclectic selection of these. Not to mention the Labia Theatre in Orange Street, one of the oldest independent movie theatres in Cape Town.

Gardens is also home to several of the premier public art and cultural destinations managed by Iziko Museums of South Africa including the South African Museum, South African National Gallery and The Planetarium. The South African Jewish Museum and Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre are in close proximity to these.

Founded in 1925, Michaelis School of Fine Art (the Fine Arts department of the University of Cape Town) is another place of interest. Internationally the school is recognised as one of South Africa’s foremost institutions for the study of fine art and new media at an advanced level.

From Gardens, it is easy to access Table Mountain trails, stunning beaches on the Atlantic Seaboard, the V&A Waterfront and the Southern Suburbs.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) plays a leading role in the fight against preventable heart disease and stroke, with the aim of seeing fewer people in South Africa suffer premature deaths and disabilities.

Established in 1980, the HSFSA is a nongovernmental, non-profit organisation which relies on external funding to sustain the work it carries out. It aims to reduce the cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden in South Africa and ultimately the burden on the healthcare system of South Africa. Their mission is to empower people in South Africa to adopt healthy lifestyles, make healthy choices easier, seek appropriate care and to encourage prevention.

Healthy Living According to the HSFSA, up to 80% of heart diseases and strokes that happen before the age of 70 years can be prevented by simply living a healthy lifestyle and treating conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

A healthy lifestyle involves eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, not smoking, managing day-to-day stress, if drinking alcohol then doing so in moderation and maintaining a healthy weight.

Here are more facts to raise concern and inspire change.

Vaping and Heart Health Vaping is a growing health concern worldwide. While it may seem less harmful than smoking, it has not been proven safe.

In October 2021, The Johns Hopkins University published research on vape ingredients which revealed thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, many of which have not yet been identified. Amongst ingredients the team could identify, were numerous potentially harmful substances including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in e-Cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavourings linked with possible toxic effects and respiratory irritation.

The HSFSA is very concerned about vaping as well. ‘The truth about vaping is still very much up in the air, as the studies haven’t been able to run for long enough to be conclusive. This said, there are many things which have demonstrated that vaping is far from benign. It might be healthier than smoking. But it might also be far, far worse.

We just don’t know.’

What does the typical day of a barista look like?

It requires a very early morning start. We need to prep the coffee machine, set up the coffee grinder and get ready to brew. A barista has to stay focused and proactive, always trying to anticipate the next step. If you’re distracted for a second when it’s busy, you could end up under a lot of pressure.

Tell us about the most interesting place you have travelled to.

Definitely Rome. It’s ancient and modern at the same time and the coffee culture there is unbelievable. The city has a crazy, fastpaced lifestyle and it’s like the Romans are all fuelled by espresso.

In which countries have you worked and what did you love about them?

How does your skill set and experience serve you in 2022?

Any advice for young professionals starting out in the industry?

Very well. We’ve pulled through some tough times and are very happy with where we are now.

It’s not for sissies, but work hard and smart and you’ll definitely see the rewards. The most important thing is to be hands-on and to prioritise inventory control if you have your own shop one day.

What is the single most rewarding aspect of what you do?

Italy: I love the vibe, coffee culture and the food. England: The many different kinds of people and beers. South Africa is the best and Cape Town (Hout Bay) has been great for us. The lifestyle, people and abundance of coffee roasters are amazing.

D

ylan Lewis is widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost sculptors of the animal form.

In recent years, he has used the human figure to explore our relationship with our inner wilderness. His Sculpture Garden is a sculpted indigenous garden featuring more than 60 of his works.

The Garden Located between two worlds, one wild and one tamed, the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden borders the manicured suburbs of Stellenbosch and a rugged mountain wilderness where leopard still roam.

In this garden of private myth, the artist explores the Jungian notion of ‘the wilderness within’. More than 60 sculptures constituting a comprehensive record of his artistic development thus far have been carefully sited along 4 kilometres of paths.

Creating the Garden The project began in 2009 when Lewis hired an excavator to create a level play area for his children behind their house on the farm and began creating what would become a 7-hectare sculpture garden.

‘When I saw the potential of what that machine could do, it gripped me, Lewis says. ‘I spent almost two years with earth-moving equipment, these very large machines contouring the landscape much as I would the surface of a sculpture, using the same principles but on a much bigger scale. I developed a sign language with the operator and he became an extension of my hand.’

During the earthworks, Lewis shaped a disused tract of flat farmland into dynamic hills, valleys and water features.

The garden could be considered his largest sculpture to date.

The garden’s four sources of water are a natural perennial spring, a seasonal mountain river, a borehole and agricultural water.

Lewis’s Sculpture is Primarily an Outlet for Emotion His fascination with wilderness began during his upbringing in a religious fundamentalist family. Today, his interest lies in the path of nonjudgement, which he describes as, ‘the burning point between tameness and wildness, between devil and God, between human and animal, that is both paradox and crucifixion’. Nature has come to symbolise this for him.

The Process

The Garden’s Focus

Lewis describes the process of creating the garden as intuitive.

The garden focuses on indigenous species, particularly fynbos. Although planted to give year-round colour, it peaks in July and August into September, when its many buchus and ericas are in fragrant flower.

‘It is not a linear Western garden imposed on the landscape. It is very organic, very natural. It could appear that nothing has changed here, that no work has been done, because it fits in with the natural order.’

Lewis has grouped the sculptures within the garden not as a response to a conscious plan but rather, as he describes it, through a process that unfolded intuitively over many years, in which certain sculptures seemed to ‘gather’ into distinct areas.

The influence of Japanese gardens and the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic is evident in the minimalist, sculptural design of the garden, its ellipses and curves, its sense of spirituality and acceptance of transience and imperfection.

‘Fynbos is winter vegetation, dormant in summer. The challenge in an indigenous garden like this is to bring in big flushes of summer colour,’ says indigenous plant consultant Fiona Powrie, who oversees the garden botanically.

On the pink ‘heather hill’, a selection of ericas, buchus, birch-leaved pelargoniums (Pelargonium betulinum) and Flats’ silkypuffs (Diastella proteoides) are seen. Unusual varieties of erica were sourced from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden: every available cultivar of Erica verticillata,

‘Unlike humans,’ he notes, ‘plants, birds, animals, clouds, rivers and oceans have no opinion of me; they are utterly

indifferent to my existence. There is both a horror and a tremendous freedom in this realisation.’

Viewing nature as a ‘church with no dogma’, in the words of poet and psychologist Ian McCallum, Lewis says, ‘It is a place that connects me to my authentic, untamed inner nature.’

Humans have progressively colonised earth’s wild places and though our lifestyles may have improved, this has brought an accompanying shadow, in his view: The widespread ecological destruction of our planetary home and the psychological trauma as we become disconnected from nature. Similarly, we are born wild, but must censor these aspects of ourselves in order to live in social groupings. We risk dying psychologically, Lewis believes, if we become alienated from the authentic wild self. For him, inner peace and authentic vitality lie in learning to live with this paradox. Many of his sculptures, and indeed the garden itself, express this as a physical and visual balance around a centre point.

A Theme Runs Through the Garden Another central theme is the personal quest for the unknowable and the impossible. ‘That element for me is in the garden: the search for meaning, the sense of what this journey is all about,’ says Lewis, who has long been inspired by words from British sculptor Henry Moore: ‘The secret of life is to have a task, something you devote your entire life to, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for the rest of your life.

And the most important thing is, it must be something you cannot possibly do.’

The Artist Dylan Lewis was born in 1964 and raised in an artistic family in South Africa. His

father was an accomplished sculptor, his mother and grandmother were painters and his two great-grandfathers were an architect and cabinetmaker, respectively.

Lewis initially followed in the family tradition, beginning his career as a painter, but later turned to sculpture.

Widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost sculptors of the animal form, he initially focused on the big cats. In recent years, however, he has used the human figure to explore our relationship with our inner wilderness.

His international career spans two decades and includes exhibitions in Paris, Sydney, Toronto, Houston and San Francisco, as well as numerous oneman exhibitions in London, where he is amongst the few living artists to have held solo auctions at Christie’s London.

Simondium Valley Simondium – the secret gem, nestled between Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, with beautiful surroundings complemented by rugged scenery.

n the heart of the Cape Winelands, just outside the tourist towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, lies the little hamlet of Simondium, on the R45. Simondium’s rich history dates back to the 1600s. The town was named after a Huguenot minister, Pierre Simond, who established the first church in the late 1600s. This church can still be seen today, operating as a Dutch Reformed Church.

Pierre Simond resided in the left wing of the building which now houses Lust Bistro & Bakery on Vrede and Lust Wine Estate.

This hamlet offers visitors a wide variety of activities, amenities and indulgences including accommodation, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, world-class wines, craft beers and gin.

Dalewood Fromage, for example, producing cheese from the ground up with the goal to handcraft, has won awards for their Wineland Brie with Green Fig creation. The location is now home to ARC Infruitec-Nietvoorbij Bien Donné Research Farm where experimental farming practices take place.

Exploring the Valley There is lots to do in Simondium and surrounds.

Start with Boschendal, the second-oldest estate in South Africa, dating back to 1685.

Visitors can settle in for a wine tasting,

enjoy picnics on giant lawns, go cycling or walking and visit the deli or new farm shop.

The estate offers four different wine tastings to accommodate different preferences.

Down the road, you will find Ou Meul Bakery in the historic and restored Die Handelshuis. According to records it was built in the early 1900s and used as a trade house servicing the community and surrounding areas with everything from freshly baked breads to electrical supplies.

Today it is used as a coffee shop and eatery where families can gather for breakfast, brunch and lunch.

Next up, you will find Simondium Country Lodge, offering visitors accommodation, a wedding and function venue as well as conference facilities. The lodge also has a restaurant serving the finest traditional Cape dishes.

At Koöperasie Stories, visitors can browse and buy beautiful antique enamelware from Europe, old pharmacist bottles and handwoven linen.

Further down you can find Soul Barrel Brewing, an artisanal brewery crafting world-class beer as well as Pappa Grappa & Wilderer Distillery, a restaurant creating craft gin.

The charming Kalahari Plains Camp overlooks an immense pan in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana.

Here there are only eight airy, wood-lined en-suite canvas rooms. Above each lies a sleep-out platform from which to enjoy the beautiful star-studded skies.
