T

he country has been through a lot recently. Many people have suffered significant losses and endured a huge amount of stress. We are however an extremely resilient nation and there have been some incredible stories that have come from the hardship. People have come together to help each other rebuild and there has been an abundance of support and ubuntu amongst communities which has brought many people closer together.

We were also faced with the challenge of moving back to level 4 lockdown for a period due to the third wave, just as the economy was picking up and things were starting to get back to some form of normality.

For the property market, however, it was not all bad news. Property sales within Cape Town have continued with the momentum gained over the last few months and lockdown has meant that the hugely reduced interest rates have remained unchanged in order to stimulate spending.

The unchanged rates have kept the gap open for buyers to get into the property market and it is proving a good time for first-time home buyers to get their foot in the door and even consider slightly larger or better located properties that were previously out of their budget. Wise investment at this stage could be very beneficial as we know that as lockdown eases the economy will continue to pick up and rates will start to rise again.

We are seeing a trend of first-time buyers looking for homes that offer more space than the ones they currently occupy, as work from home opportunities are becoming more prominent. The current interest rate, coupled with the fact that we are sitting in a buyers’ market, offers a great opportunity to expand search areas which may have previously been out of reach.

izle De Wet embarked on a career in luxury travel and tourism 25 years ago, a journey during which she gained valuable experiences with remarkable brands and internationally renowned operations.

Her unwavering enthusiasm, passion for detail, commitment to service excellence and understanding of what differentiates great from exceptional, set the foundation for realising her dream venture: ADORE Africa.

ADORE Africa exists to exceed the expectations of curious travellers in search of their next enriching discovery. They achieve this by curating unforgettable journeys revolving around handpicked properties and locations, unique gastronomy, exceptional wines off the beaten track, local artisans, awe-inspiring safaris, perfect beaches, accommodation embodying the essence of the destination and world-renowned golf courses, amongst other travel gems.

Background After completing an internal Hotel Management course at Lanzerac Hotel, Lizle fulfilled operations and events management as well as sales and marketing roles in 5-star hotels and resorts. This entailed making overseas client visits and attending many luxury tourism trade shows around the world, marketing South Africa and the properties she represented.

allowed her to combine, live and share her passions and hobbies through her own life’s journey and the journeys she curates for others.

‘I absolutely love walking and hiking in South Africa and in Europe. Immersing myself in nature, having close encounters with wildlife and birdwatching are some of my favourite things to do – and capturing all these special moments through photography where possible.

I also take immense pleasure in entertaining and creating spectacular dishes, paired with the perfect wines… when not savouring incredible fare dreamt up by master chefs or learning about award-winning creations from the winemakers themselves amongst the vineyards. Laughing and sharing stories with loved ones around a fire never gets old. I also love meeting new people, learning new things, challenging my senses and comfort zones, supporting conservation efforts and making a difference.’

During quieter moments at home, Lizle loves spending time with her family, baking, painting and restoring objects.

The Tourism Industry Today The current situation is a major challenge for the tourism industry, but the realm ADORE Africa occupies is completely aligned to the needs of the ‘new traveller’.

Their discerning clients know who they want to spend their private holistic holidays with and have a deep understanding of their environmental impact.

Serendipity After attending an international trade show in Europe a few years ago, Lizle concluded her trip in France, visiting Cannes. She booked a table for one at Restaurant JAN in Nice where she had one of the most memorable culinary experiences of her life. Chef and Patron Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen is the first South African chef to obtain a Michelin star and has secured it a total of four times for Restaurant JAN.

This year, Lizle and her husband had the absolute delight of staying at Tswalu Kalahari, an exclusive 5-star safari lodge in the heart of South Africa’s Green Kalahari. Here Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen was set to open restaurant Klein JAN two weeks after their stay. The night before they departed, however, they were advised that Jan would love to host them for the opening of Klein JAN.

‘It was the most magical, incredible night, never to be forgotten. A wonderful experience bringing this culinary voyage full circle.’

INTRODUCING LIZLE DE WET

How the Tourism Industry Can Make a Difference Lizle is utterly passionate about and focused on supporting and ensuring responsible travel. A big part of this is education which is vital for the conservation and upliftment of local communities, wildlife and biodiversity.

‘Londolozi Game Reserve’s purpose, for example, is to accelerate the awakening of humanity in partnership with nature.

This entails pioneering new systems for living, their conservation development model, social enterprise and finally a rise of consciousness – all explained in their Impact Journey, 1926 – 2026.’

‘In the last-mentioned, Londolozi explains that before we can heal the planet we need to heal ourselves and that only once we as individuals make the choice to alter our relationship with planet earth can we begin to reverse much of the environmental destruction we see before us. In terms of social enterprise, Londolozi has developed various education systems including a creche, a learning centre for adults and The Good Work Foundation, an NPO of which they are the patron and founding donor.’

Our colourful country plays host to an incredible selection of enchanting plants – from stunning succulents to wild grasses and hardy shrubs to tall trees. In fact, it is home to 10% of the globe’s flowering species, making it a legend in the global ecological scene.

T

here are eight major terrestrial biomes in South Africa, a biome being a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat. Multiple ecosystems can exist within a single biome.

Native VS Indigenous VS Endemic Species Native refers to species that naturally occur in a particular area, inhabiting a small ecosystem. They can, however, be native to several regions.

Indigenous species, a type of native species, tend to be more widely dispersed and adaptable.

South Africa has many indigenous species to cherish and be proud of – more than 22 000 seed plants from almost 230 different families, in fact. Bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae), for example, occurs naturally along the eastern coast from Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape to northern KwaZuluNatal, in coastal bush and thicket.

Endemic species, also a type of native species, are exclusively found in a specific place and require a certain set of specialised conditions to prosper in particular habitats.

The Cape Peninsula alone is home to an impressive 158 endemic species and 3 endemic subspecies. One of them is the exquisite Red Disa, restricted to the Sandstone Mountains of the South Western Cape.

The Significance of Indigenous Plants Because indigenous species have evolved to deal with particular conditions and circumstances, it is vital to protect them in their natural spaces so they can continue playing their very important roles. Indigenous birds and pollinators are attracted to indigenous plant species and help spread their pollen and seeds.

So, when you plant indigenous species in your garden, you play a role not only in 19

preserving South Africa’s indigenous floral heritage, but also our ecosystems and biodiversity.

Firstly, Knight Frank South Africa would like to extend a massive congratulations to all the South African athletes who qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Secondly, we are so proud of our winners to date and those yet to claim their well-deserved medals.

S

o far, South Africa has claimed three medals, two for swimming and one for surfing.

The first, a Silver Medal, was raked in by 24-year-old University of Pretoria athlete Tatjana Schoenmaker for swimming in the Women’s 100 m Breaststroke Event.

The second, also a stellar Silver Medal, was claimed by Bianca Buitendag, a 27-year-old professional surfer who took part in the Women’s Shortboard Event.

The thrilling third, a grand Gold Medal, also went to Tatjana Schoenmaker for winning the Women’s 200 m Breaststroke Event.

But that is not all. Not only did Tatjana win gold – the first for South Africa at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – she set a new world record for Women’s 200 m Backstroke, shattering the eight-year old world record.

Fresnaye An Exclusive Little Piece of Wind-free Heaven Fresnaye is an exclusive neighbourhood with stylish properties set on scenic slopes.

Hugged by Lion’s Head, Sea Point and Bantry Bay, this fairly wind-free suburb is one of Cape Town’s most affluent.

Originally, Fresnaye was a 200-acre estate by the name of Winterslust – a ‘Garden of Eden’ set in orchards and vineyards. It was acquired in the early 1800s by a barrister and French aristocrat from Bayeux in Normandy, also a descendant of the French Huguenots, namely Ryk Le Sueur.

To this day, the street names still reflect its French heritage. Apart from Heeren Huis near Bantry Bay which was built in 1776, the farmhouse on the property was the only building on the mountain slopes at the time.

Today, however, it is a tranquil, opulent area for homeowners and a secluded, private spot for holidaymakers with a mountain backdrop and sweeping sea views.

With hiking trails and Sea Point’s many attractions just minutes away, you can experience the best of both worlds.

Battery Park

V&A Waterfront

This new urban park forms the gateway to the V&A Waterfront, integrating Cape Town’s CBD and the waterfront through a series of pedestrian routes – including one alongside the canal.

isitors can engage in a range of outdoor recreation, entertainment and retail activities in various levels of public spaces.

Each area of the park contains benches and public walking paths surrounded by waterwise fynbos and other indigenous plants and trees.

To maintain the plants, a combination of rainwater harvesting and greywater is used.

Forming part of the V&A Waterfront’s Canal District, the 12,000 m2 park can be accessed from either Dock Road, Fort Road, Ebenezer Road or Alfred Street. Security, cleaning and maintenance of the park are the responsibility of the V&A Waterfront.

Beneath the park you will find a four-storey public parking facility that can be entered via either Alfred Street or Dock Road. The 1,206 bays are available for public, residential and tenant use.

Key Elements of the Park Amsterdam Battery The site is of archaeological importance as it still contains the rear ramparts of the historical Amsterdam Battery – one of the oldest structures in Cape Town. Archaeological digs of the area were undertaken prior to construction of Battery Park and they uncovered the two circular walls which have been retained. To accentuate the look and feel of the old battery, stone-filled gabion walls have been used throughout the park.

Canal Battery Park will host a range of water sport activities, from stand up paddling (SUP) to kayaking and swimming. The canal also provides a link between the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) through water taxis that ferry passengers between both points.

Piazza The Piazza forms one of the levels of the park.

It comprises retail outlets, pedestrian paths, benches and gardens. Stairs leading down from the Piazza give visitors access to the canal from where they can watch water activities or simply meander along the water’s edge.

Park The elevated park area, offering views across the V&A Waterfront and the surrounding city streets, is fully accessible to disabled visitors.

A family-friendly area, it consists of a jungle gym, swings, rocking horses and a scooter path.

Skate and Scooter Park It is the first skatepark of this quality built within the city to world-class skatepark standards using lightweight construction.

Skate and scooter elements include a bowl with spine and pump hump, quarter pipes, layback bank, gaps, a small plaza with hubbas and rails, a frame set and a long ledge and rail. It was designed by California Skateparks in the USA with input from local talent Marc Baker at California Skateparks Africa.

Multicourt The Multicourt can be used for general basketball and mini soccer games during the week and on weekends. Adjustable hoops make it accessible for younger players.

Retail The Piazza is home to food and beverage retailers as well as niche companies offering specialist services.

ou can use wall treatments to reveal a bit about your personality, to set a theme, or simply to enhance a room in need of some character.

What makes it even more powerful and convenient is the fact that so many wall treatments are temporary in nature. For example, unlike wallpapers in the past, contemporary ones are easy to remove and low maintenance in terms of care and cleaning.

This means you can be as bold as you want to be without worrying about a big commitment. So there really is no reason to hold back. For some, it is the ultimate opportunity to be lighthearted and have fun.

Of course if vibrant colours, intriguing patterns and interesting textures are not entirely your thing, you can always opt for something simpler. Neutral instead of striking hues; geometric instead of floral prints; flat instead of raised finishes.

Another thing to remember: You do not have to cover every wall in a room. You can simply choose a focal wall. It can be really exciting without being overwhelming if you take it one wall at a time. If you love it and want more, simply go ahead and cover the rest. Great rooms to play with are guest rooms and bathrooms. Eye-catching wall treatments will give your guests something to look at and talk about. Be sure to add additional artistic touches such as a sculpture, painting or objet d’art to complete the look.

roject Playground is a South African non-profit organisation working towards sustainable change and increased equality. Their methods focus on individuals’ selfrealisation and self-actualisation through a holistic approach, fostering a more peaceful, democratic and equal society.

The founders wanted to create a safe space and platform for children and young people through meaningful spare time where trusting adults motivate children and young people to believe in the future and the opportunity to influence and control their own lives positively.

Who They Are Founded in 2010 – by Frida Vesterberg and Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Dalarna – this registered NPO engages over 900 vulnerable children and youth in townships outside Cape Town.

Frida has been in a number of voluntary positions since she moved to Cape Town in 2005, amongst others LoveLife, the SPCA and Somerset Hospital. Her willingness and fierceness to create change is what has made Project Playground the incredible place it is for the children, youth and families who walk through the gates.

Princess Sofia who spent many years volunteering in several African countries later fell in love with South

Africa and is passionate about its future.

Her deep devotion to child development and determination to create change has been instrumental in the development of the organisation. She remained as Secretary-General until April 2015 and since then has played an active role as Project Playground’s Honorary Chairman.

Only 20 players are selected each year based on very specified criteria such as evidence of improved school results, high attendance, good behaviour, being a team player and exhibiting good values.

While Project Playground believes all families need to be self-sufficient and not dependent on charity, sometimes this type of aid is necessary to assist in the process of becoming independent.

Born in the small town of Piet Retief, South African soprano Pretty Yende has risen to the top of the opera world with unparalleled speed.

ith her magnetic charm, acclaimed operatic and solo performances worldwide and a critically lauded discography, South African soprano Pretty Yende has quickly become one of the brightest stars of the classical music world.

Since making her professional operatic debut at the Latvian National Theatre in Riga as Micaëla in Carmen, she has been seen at nearly all of the major theatres of the world, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opéra national de Paris, the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Opernhaus Zürich and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

In 2019, Pretty Yende returned to Paris for two highly anticipated role debuts: Violetta in a new production

of La Traviata by Simon Stone and the title role in Manon, featuring a new production by Vincent Huguet. She also appeared for the first time at The Dallas Opera as Rosina in Christopher Mattaliano’s colourful production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

On the concert stage, Ms. Yende embarked on a solo recital tour, making stops at Oper Frankfurt, the Opernhaus Zürich, Smetana Hall in Prague, the Barbican in London and Carnegie Hall in New York. Further concert engagements included appearances with the Würth Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany), the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège (Belgium) and performing in Bratislava (Slovakia) and Grafenegg (Austria).

Ms. Yende began the 2018/19 season with her return to Barcelona as Elvira in I puritani. She returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Marie in La Fille du Régiment and sang her first Leïla in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, receiving critical acclaim from the New York Times: ‘In the role of Leïla, suppressed erotic longing is sublimated into pure vocalism lavishly ornamented with arabesques and grace notes.’ Shortly thereafter, she appeared at the Opéra national de Paris as Norina in Don Pasquale, portrayed her first Amina in La sonnambula at

In 2016, she released her debut album, A Journey, for Sony Classical and appeared as the musical guest on several television shows including The Late Show with Steven Colbert, The Wendy Williams Show and Good Morning America. She released her second solo album titled Dreams one year later on Sony Classical, with Opera Now raving: ‘South African Yende has a delicious instrument, with a youthful quiver of passion to it, and a wonderfully secure technique.’

A 2011 graduate of the Young Artists Accademia of the Teatro alla Scala, Yende made her debut with the company in 2010 as Berenice in Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro. In 2010, she became the first artist in the history of the Belvedere competition to win top prize in every category and went on to win First Prize in the Operalia Competition in 2011.

Noordhoek A Quiet Treasure on the West Coast of the Cape Peninsula

I

n Noordhoek, things are a little quieter and move a little slower. It is a suburb synonymous with long walks and horse rides on quiet beaches, important wetlands, delicious organic fare, lovely little shops and mellow tunes drifting from local restaurants and pubs.

Thanks to its village-like feel and rustic surroundings, it is easy to forget that you are in fact only a 35-minute drive away from Cape Town City Bowl.

The wide beach is an 8-kilometre stretch of pristine sand that is visible as soon as you come over Chapman’s Peak. Its sheer size ensures that it practically never feels crowded. Activity wise, it accommodates sunbathing, dog walking and horse riding, to name a few. In 1900, when the captain confused Chapman’s Peak with the Cape of Good Hope, the steamship Kakapo ran aground. The wreck can be viewed near the southern end of the beach.

The stunning waters unsurprisingly attract surfers (to The Hoek and Dunes surfing spots), kitesurfers and windsurfers.

Wildlife wise, Noorhoek’s prized wetlands are home to the endangered Western Leopard Toad which plays a vital ecological role, along with other special creatures.

S

outh Africa is a very special country where there is not just one heritage or a specific set of distinct identities.

That is because our country is made up of so many diverse cultures and religions, all contributing to a magnetic richness that is easier experienced than described.

Within our borders reside Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Tswana, Ndebele, Khoisan, Hindu, Muslim, Coloured and Afrikaner people, to name but a few.

Embracing this fact is key to the ongoing process of striving to comprehend, foster respect for and learn from each other.

Tokoloshe is a short and hairy evil-spirited gremlin in Zulu and Xhosa mythology. At the instructions of a shaman it can cause anything from a scare to illness or even death in their victims.

The Impundulu is a supernatural bird as large as a human from Pondo, Zulu and Xhosa folklore. It can summon lightning and storms and may even take a human form.

Languages South Africa’s 11 official languages are Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa and isiZulu. Languages used by smaller groups that should also be respected and acknowledged are Khoi, Nama, San and sign language.

Of course Portuguese, German, French, Greek, Italian, Shona, Swahili, Lingala, Chinese, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu are also used, along with Arabic, Hebrew and Sanskrit in certain religions.

Fascinating Folklore Some of the continent’s legendary monsters can be found in South Africa.

The Inkanyamba, a huge carnivorous eel-like serpent in Zulu and Xhosa folklore, is said to be living in a waterfall lake area in the northern forests near Pietermaritzburg.

The Grootslang (Great Snake) is a monster residing in a cave called the Wonder Hole in the Richtersveld area.

ntroducing Elgin Valley: The largest single export fruit producing area in Southern Africa.
