Motivated by the love of Christ, we seek to improve the lives of the vulnerable by providing quality, compassionate social services that meet local needs.

Service Area

Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri provides services for residents of the 39 southernmost counties in Missouri, with offices in Springfield, Joplin, Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, and Van Buren.

Funding

Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri receives funding from a variety of sources including donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Other contributions include planned gifts, in-kind donations of goods, fundraising events/sponsorships, state and federal grants, and proceeds derived from Missouri tax credit programs. Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri has several tax credit programs available. Please call 417720-4213 with questions and for eligibility guidelines.

12 Month Goals

Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri (CCSOMO) will continue to operate all of its programs and provide services without interruption as it has throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. CCSOMO will service households struggling as a result of the pandemic by facilitating rent, mortgage, and utilities assistance. CCSOMO will seek out additional funding to increase its capacity to respond to the pandemic and serve the vulnerable. CCSOMO will also seek out additional opportunities to fill gaps in social services in the communities it serves, such as the Rancho Temporary Emergency Shelter Program for homeless families and women in need of medical respite; and the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program. Due to the success of LifeHouse Crisis Maternity Home in Springfield, CCSOMO will begin construction and open a second crisis maternity home in Cape Girardeau. The two facilities will provide 24/7 transitional residential housing to homeless pregnant women and their infants/young children with the goal of assisting them in achieving self-sufficiency through comprehensive case management, access to health care, education, and supportive services. CCSOMO’s general contracting social enterprise, Purpose Home Repair, will address construction workforce shortages by offering free construction pre-apprenticeship and on-the-job training to individuals with barriers to employment. CCSOMO will safely increase the number of volunteers and volunteer opportunities, so individuals with a passion to serve the vulnerable have an opportunity to share their time and talent.

Donations make our services possible, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Direct financial contributions, including stock transfers, are leveraged through partnerships and the work of volunteers in order to make the most of the gifts we receive. Lasting gifts through estate planning can ensure a legacy of love by helping with the long-term stability of Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri. In-kind contributions, such as household items and vehicles, are utilized to help the people CCSOMO serves reach their full potential. A volunteer’s gift of time and skill helps make contributions go further.

Testimonials

The loss of a spouse led one Veteran to losing his business and home. “I crawled into a bottle,” he says. Homeless and hungry, a stranger gave the Veteran $40, which he used to buy some food and a sheet of plastic at Lowe’s. “I went out into the woods, dug a hole, and lived in it for the winter, under the plastic and leaves.” Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri helped this Veteran secure emergency housing at a local motel, and permanent housing soon after. “I’m working again and thanks to my case manager, I am getting my life back.”

The pandemic led to one Springfield family splitting up when the parents lost their income and then their home. “We don’t know what we would have done without Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri. They took us in for the winter and provided us with case management which led to a new career, permanent housing, and our family reuniting.”
