EDITOR’S NOTE Well, a lot has happened since our last edition of the magazine - the country went England crazy with flags and union jack fever before the ‘3 lions’ went out with a whimper, SATC 2 hit the cinemas with groups of women across the country organising ‘cosmo nights’ and the summer has officially begun with BBQ’s, festivals and of course, lots of glorious sunshine. Oh yes, and our editor Lydia has become Mrs Burrows and enjoyed the most fantastic day on 28th May. Next issue, we’ll have a full feature dedicated to Lydia’s big day with lots of pictures and her dream team of suppliers. This issue, we have another ‘real wedding’ from across the pond in the sunny states. Lots of inspiration for you here folks so turn to page 32 for the South Carolina bride’s full interview. WHAT’S HOT
Taking the UK by storm, straight from the shores of the USA are the new and totally scrumptious whoopie pies. Arguably and perhaps quite controversially hailed as becoming the new ‘cupcake’, this revolution in sweet-toothed fancy is gaining more and more momentum and set to become ‘thee’ baked good to be shovelling in your cake hole! OK, so what is a whoopie pie I hear you cry!? Well, it is basically a cake sandwich; two moist, dense domes of cake sandwiched together with cream cheese frosting or buttercream frosting.
Even the large corporate brands are cottoning on to this new craze with Marks and Spencer being the first British supermarket to launch a range of whoopie pies.
Originating from the USA, rumour has it that the name derives from the noise Amish farmers used to make when opening their lunchboxes and upon discovering this cake treat made for them by their wife or daughter; they would shout ‘WHOOPIE’.
So, get there before the crowds arrive because rest assured, those crowds will arrive and they’ll be pretty big …..

So, Emma, tell us EVERYTHING you discovered at the Best of Bridal event: The Saatchi Gallery, London was a most opulent setting for the best in Bridal Design to show off their 2011 collections.

Romance is still big in 2011. Designers showed wedding dresses in layer upon layer of enveloping tulle, often paired with lace. A huge trend this season, generous wisps of the ‘light as a feather’ fabric adorned dresses in almost every collection that floated down the catwalk. Keep your eyes peeled for the polka dot tulle. We loved Ellie designed by Sassi Holford. The pick up or ruched skirt is back. Almost all of the designers have some version of the pickup skirt in their collection. Bobbi by Augusta Jones stood out for us. It’s a simple dress that can be individualised easily. Asymmetry is still in, both in the form of the one shoulder gown and wedding dresses with asymmetrical draping on the bodice. When the photographs are released check out Rapture by Suzanne Neville.

Very low waistlines are in abundance, and most bodices have ruched, gathered, or draped bodices which hug the figure (the wrapped fabric does a nice job of smoothing over any figure flaws in these tight bodices).
Those of us lucky enough to experience the Suzanne Neville bodice will know what we mean. Short hems are a cut above for those of us with great legs. Short and sweet is one of the trends for 2011. Our favourite being Smitten by Suzanne Neville. Strapless gowns still feature in 2011, and the one shoulder is still in fashion. A new addition to the necklines for 2011 is the boat neck. Very slim at the top and just barely grazes the edge of the model’s shoulder. A very flattering neckline for many women and a nice alternative to strapless. It is such an exciting time to be a bride! Keep your dress simple and individualise your look by adding your own finishing touches. Honeysuckle & Castle Having begun their venture, initially as a hobby, taking care of friends and families weddings, Helen and Sally soon realised that they could make a business out of their hobby and began Honeysuckle and Castle two years ago. RICHIE MUIR As you know, we at Save the Date magazine love finding fabulous talent within the East Midlands. So, when the lovely Richie Muir came to our attention, we were more than a little excited. We initially stumbled upon Richie when trying to find a talented soloist for our wedding fayre at Shottle Hall, to provide some light, background entertainment. Richie came along to the day and provided a professional and seamlessly delivered acoustic performance and had many of our brides to be asking all about him for their big days. So, having seen Richie playing solo, we decided to go and see him in Nottingham with his full band (any excuse for a night out!) and boy, what a night it was. Richie, along with his fellow musicians certainly know how to get a crowd on their feet! The energy was incredible and the songs being performed, from Kings of Leon to Elton John (even mixed with a bit of Glee!) were contemporary and perfectly performed. So, after seeing two sides to Richie; the laid back vibe and the ‘no room on the dancefloor’ side, we felt it was time to let all our lovely readers know just how great Richie is – now, over to the man himself:

It all depends on the venue and the budget. I love playing in whatever guise it may be. Playing solo is very versatile and is perfect for all venues including the very small ones. If the budget can stretch then the band is an awesome thing to have at your wedding. The musicians I use on Drums and Bass are fantastic professionals and have all the skills required to keep volumes at a perfect level for all to enjoy, no matter the venue. OK, so how would you best DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC
My music is anything from chilled unplugged acoustic to upbeat versions of popular songs. Most people tend to think I have a voice like Neil Diamond.... Hard for me to comment on that but I’ll take their word for it! What do you enjoy most about playing at weddings?
Weddings are great fun as they are such happy occasions. I feel privileged to perform at weddings and to add to the happiest day of the couples’ lives. It’s a great feeling when, at the end of the night, all the family and friends are on the dance floor in a circle and the bride and groom are in the middle singing
and dancing. It’s a special moment and one you can only really get with live musicians providing the entertainment. It’s also the moment they and their family and friends will remember most from the day. Do you have any songs you REALLY LOVE TO PERFORM
I have my own personal favourites, for example, “Mr Brightside”, “Can’t take my eyes off of you”, “Chasing Cars”, “With Or Without You” but I love all the songs I play if people are enjoying them too. I play wholeheartedly for my audience and will play all the songs required to keep them dancing. What is your advice to any couples out there currently planning their wedding entertainment?
Live music is an amazing thing to have at your wedding. It can be personalised to the couple and the evening entertainment should never be underestimated. A good part of the wedding budget should always be set aside for your live entertainment. Real Wedding Inspiration from the USA
To give you something special and rather different, our real wedding this issue comes from across the pond and well, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face it, America are in the driving seat when it comes to throwing a wedding. So, prepare to be inspired and take a read through our interview with the lovely and totally loved up Kristy and Kirk from South Carolina, USA. Over to the newlyweds ... 31
So then, first things first, whereabouts and when did you get married? We were married on May 22, 2010 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Murrells Inlet is known for the beautiful “Marsh Walk”, with dozens of delicious restaurants located perfectly on the water, where you can watch the fishing boats come and go. The church we were married in was a quaint white church, seated right on the inlet! The front doors opened to beautiful, old Live Oaks draped in Spanish moss, with a gorgeous view of the water. What attracted you to the venue you decided upon? Well, we both always wanted somewhere that had the great “Southern” feel. Sitting on rocking chairs on Kirk’s front porch before we were even engaged, he proposed the idea of getting married at the beach. I’m much of a home body and traditionalist, but the idea of a Southern beach wedding sounded quite appealing! My family grew up going to Garden City Beach, just ten minutes away from Murrells Inlet and often visited the quaint town of Murrells Inlet, known for the best seafood. You can’t drive through M.I. without passing and noticing a precious white church on the water. So, when Kirk mentioned the beach, I immediately thought of that white church I always admired... Once we decided on Murrells Inlet, my mom, Kirk and I spent a weekend there visiting many different venues. We all FELL IN LOVE with the reception venue as soon as we got there. The gorgeous place that we celebrated our new marriage with friends and family is “Wachesaw Club Plantation”. It sits right on the Waccamaw River and is surrounded by the most gorgeous Live Oaks draped in Spanish Moss I’ve ever seen.

There is a white porch that surrounds the whole building, lined in little white lights. We had many family members traveling from the north and we knew that it was the perfect mix of “Southern Elegance”, with a cozy feel! Ok Kristy, the dress – how did you set about finding the ‘one’? Anyone that knows me knows that I am the WORST at making decisions and often analyze them to death! I am also very bad at wanting to please everyone, so having too many different opinions is not good for me! I set out dress shopping with my mom and sister, having a picture in my mind of what I wanted- a strapless dress, drop waist, with big “bell” feel at the bottom. I also knew I wanted lace on my veil. At the second store we went to, Poinsett Bride in Greenville, SC, my mom saw a dress in the window and wanted me to try it on. The owner told us it was a brand new dress from the designer Paloma Blanca from Canada. I honestly did not like it that much off but decided to try it on anyways... and then we fell in love! The strapless, sweetheart cut bodice was covered in beautiful lace and at the drop waist, there was scalloped lace. The silk sash was something I loved and the beautiful broach from my grandmother (my something old) added the perfect touch. When I put it on and felt the silk, I didn’t want to take it off. That day, I fell in love with two dresses and had a friend, who I dearly love and trust with me (who also is one of our photographers). She took pictures of me in both dresses and just told me that when I got the pictures, I would “just know”. As soon as I saw the pictures of the dress with the lace, I knew it was the perfect dress. I went back two days later, and we bought it. I can honestly say I truly felt like princess, or a “Southern Belle” when I put that dress on!
Talk us through the style of the venue with your décor: Like I have mentioned, we wanted the “feel” of the venue to be very “Southern Elegance”, yet we wanted our guests to leave feeling like they were able to kick back and relax, while enjoying a great party. The two main colors of our wedding were light Apple green, and “Caribbean blue”. The bridesmaid dresses, by Lula Kate were made of silk shantung and were Caribbean blue. Their sashes were apple green. I gave my girls the choice of two different styles of dresses and we ended up with 6 of one style and 6 of the other. They were all the same color and hit right above the knee and they even had pockets like mine! I had 12 bridesmaids, 1 junior bridesmaid and a flower girl. The groomsmen wore khaki suits, which they were able to purchase for the same cost of renting a tux, white pinpoint shirts and Caribbean blue ties- except for Kirk, who wore a “bone” colored tie. At the reception all of the tables had white floor length table cloths, with apple green table toppers. All of the tables on the porch that surrounded the country club had white table cloths, with Caribbean blue table toppers. My bouquet was one of my favourite parts! It was beautiful! Tulips, peonies, hydrangeas, lilies, orchids and roses- all ivory, light green and pink. Our florist even mimicked the broach on my dress and made a gorgeous broach on the front of my bouquet! Another favorite thing that our florist did was the large wooden “H’s” covered in green Kermits and hung with green ribbon. The best part is that we got to keep them and I plan to cover them with moss and hang them on our front doors to our house!!
Did you throw anything quirky and off the wall into the mix? If so, what!? My electric blue high heels- they were my “something blue” and a little surprise to the normal white wedding shoes. I changed into wedding flip-flops that I made for the reception. We also had a candy table- this is becoming quite popular here. An array of pretty glass containers, labelled with all the different types of candy. Guests could fill bags, which had our logo on stickers as one of their “party favors”. Another guest favour was foam drink, Koozies. They were Caribbean blue, with our wedding logo in white on one side and on the other was our saying “Happily Ever After Starts Here... Murrells Inlet, SC”. Another creative touch was our wedding arrows which Kirk made and my sister painted blue. White paint on each arrow spelt a word from “Happily Ever After Starts Here”, they then had white ribbon tied around and led guests back to the reception site. We also had “H” cookies, which were another favour for our guests. Cookies made into H’s, sugared and frosted with our colours and packaged in adorable white bags, with wedding color tissue and fake wedding bands tied to the handle. The Southern Wedding is also different in that we don’t have a sit down dinner- there are food stations set up and guests can go to each station and find different foods. There are not place cards, so everyone can sit where they want. The band played softer music while everyone ate and then the real party started... we had an amazing day which we will remember forever.
