EDITOR’S NOTE So, we’re into 2011 ... how did that happen!? I’m sure for any of you out there planning your wedding, you’ll be feeling the same. You go from one dress fitting to another, one tasting to the next and before you know it, your wedding is upon you and it’s time to say “I do”. As exciting and amazing planning your wedding can be, we at Save the Date magazine have discovered one element of wedding planning that needs a face lift ..... wedding fayres. That’s right, the other Sunday morning when you dragged your hubby to be out in the cold to a ‘wedding fayre’ and possibly came away feeling uninspired - that is what we aim to change. Our Wedding Event with a Difference promises (hand on heart) to provide you with the BEST, most INNOVATIVE, CREATIVE and all round INSPIRATIONAL experience of what a ‘wedding fayre’ should be about. We’ve even changed the word ‘fayre’ to ‘event’ as we feel that an event is what it will be - something which will leave people talking. And the most exciting thing about all of this is .... everyone who buys a ticket to the event automatically gets entered into a competition to win £5,000 worth of wedding supplies for their big day. Wedding Filming - The New Must Have Matt King, director of Jumping Spider Films tells us why a wedding film is a timeless memento. We watch television. We watch a lot of television. How much? Well a 2005 government report suggests we watch on average 157 minutes a day. Around about 18 hours a week. That’s 3,744 hours a year, and of course this is in 2005 - before the recession hit and we all stopped going out. Chances are it has probably risen a bit since then. So what’s my point you may ask… I’ve worked and still occasionally work in television; I’ve worked on some great TV shows but I’ve also worked on shows that I have had little or no creative input in. It’s a job and one that I enjoy, but fulfillment; the feeling of making something truly unique, creative and genuinely something to be proud of, well apart from my own short films and the occasional television programme, I’ve only ever experienced those feelings when making a wedding film. 6
Now close your eyes for a few seconds and picture a wedding videographer in your mind. I’m 99% certain that you probably pictured a middle aged, slightly overweight man with a large VHS camcorder on his shoulder walking around and generally looking ugly and getting in the way. And you're probably not wrong in some cases. I have seen, through research, some absolutely appalling wedding filmmaking. I think there may be an ‘I can do that’ attitude – ‘All I need is a camera and a website and away we go!’. Well they’re right. Anyone can buy a very good camera for a reasonable price and point it at the bride and groom. So what’s the point in hiring a good videographer to do the same thing? If we can all afford a good camera (you can buy High Definition Cameras for a few hundred pounds), why don’t we all make TV and films as well? Well, I think we all know the answer to that one. And now to the point.
We watch a lot of television programmes, and we watch a lot of movies. Good, bad, memorable, forgettable; they make us laugh, cry, shout and occasionally turn off. We watch actors, brilliant actors. We watch celebrities; funny, quirky, talented, talentless celebrities. We watch the public, the stupid, inept public. We watch everyone, but unless of course you are one of the above, we don’t watch ourselves. And most of us wouldn’t want to would we?
Using multiple cameras, broadcast quality editing and sound recording equipment combined with experience and passion, a good, high quality videographer will make a remarkable memento of your day. They won’t be obtrusive, they’ll mingle well with your guests and they’ll capture the moments you missed. They’ll capture your friends and family, the tears and laughter, the nervous groom, the stunning bride, the proud parents and the best mans speech. They’ll then skillfully edit it, creating a story, set to beautiful, provoking music that evokes the atmosphere and emotion of the day.
I have nothing, no moving image of myself up until the age of 23. I have no footage of my wedding day and I have nothing to show my children of my life before they existed. Sure, I have pictures, but I have no voice, no laugh, no tears. Nothing. Zilch. There is even less footage of my own parents. Now I have a selection of cameras that are always near by, I capture everything these days; my parents on film behaving (well, behaving like parents and grandparents) myself and my wife behaving like the idiot parents we are and endless footage of my children growing up. But I have nothing of myself or my wife before the children existed. And what do you think they’ll really want to watch when they are older?
A good wedding film should not be underestimated. There are a sprinkling of quality wedding videographers out there, you can find them but you just have to look and please avoid the bad ones, they give us all a bad name. But to give you an idea of the impact a wedding film can have, I recently received an email from a previous bride we filmed; she emailed me to tell me they had watched their wedding film seven times in two days. They both cried whilst watching it. We’ve made television watched by millions; I don’t think anyone would have cried. I know which I’d rather make.
I’ve seen pictures of my mum and dad on their wedding day - all blue suit and flares. Great pictures, a bit brown through age but none the less still do the job. And that’s it, I’ve seen the pictures. The only other story I know of the day is that my dad had to take a lot of valium to cope with the nerves. Oh how I’d love to see the big man a blubbering, nervous, drugged up wreck! How I’d love to watch a film of that day, see long deceased relatives bought back to life and see my mum as a young woman, not as a mum. In case you haven’t got the point already, I’m trying to sell you wedding videography. No, really I am. But honestly, I’m not only trying to sell for my business to be a success; I’m selling it because I believe in it. I believe it is a must have, I believe it should no longer be an optional extra that you can do without. I don’t want to take away the business of any other suppliers; they all make an incredible contribution to your day. The flowers, the photographer, the venue, the dress, and the wedding planner - they are all as important as one another. I’m just trying to put GOOD videography in that category.
Reassess wedding videography and draw a new picture in your mind. It has come a long way, believe me. Consider it for your wedding and if you do decide to have it filmed, in 40 years time, you’ll be so very glad you did. That is if you find time to watch it in your busy TV watching schedule…

In Twenty Eleven, wedding stationery can be as creative, colourful or as individual as the bride and groom. We can also add the picture of a venue (with the venues permission) to create a bespoke and classic feel. Rachael Connerton meets Jess at Green and Stock What happened when über creative photographer met über creative cake stylist As a photographer, I love capturing the little details that make a wedding really special so it’s exciting when we meet other creative people who share our passion! Taking inspiration from boutique cake designers in New York and London, Green & Stock create bespoke wedding cakes, providing a real centre-piece to any wedding day. They also offer unique, hand-crafted cake toppers, delighting brides and grooms with miniature models of the wedding party to treasure long after the big day. As you can imagine, as wedding photographers, we see lots of wedding cakes but Green and Stock’s personal touch really stands out. When we saw their work at a number of weddings, we could tell straight away that we were on the same wavelength and we couldn’t wait to get in touch with the owner, Jess, to collaborate on a shoot! Jess has baking in her genes; she learned to bake alongside her mum and one of her earliest memories is of pretending to be on Blue Peter, telling everyone what she was baking! This started her lifelong passion for cake making: “I always liked baking for friends and family and I’m so lucky to have turned something I love into my career!” Jess’ enthusiasm and attention to detail really shows in the way she works with her clients. “Whenever I speak to brides and grooms, firstly, we talk about what ideas they’ve had for their wedding cake; 18
what designs and styles they’ve seen that they like, the colours and themes, the number of tiers etc. I then invite them for an exclusive consultation.” Recently, Jess worked with one of our lovely brides and grooms, Sarah and Mark, for their amazing wedding at Prestwold Hall. “We started with a blank piece of paper and, over tea and cake (of course!), we sketched out Sarah and Mark’s own personal designs. We looked through swatches of fabric from Sarah’s beautiful dress and her bridesmaids’, as well as images from magazines - all to explore the specific style they were looking for.” From this initial design, Jess created a stunning bespoke four-tier wedding cake that Sarah and Mark loved and fitted perfectly with the understated, classic feel they were hoping for.
One of Jess’ favourite weddings this year was for Karen and Fraser, whose wedding was featured on Save the Date's blog, “Karen and Fraser were so lovely and it was so much fun working with them. They came to their consultation with an open mind and worked with me on lots of ideas - we really got inspired! In the end, as well as a beautiful cake, they had cake toppers made of all of the wedding party, dressed in their wedding finery. Mike and Ginny married on Saturday 7th August at Ratcliffe College in Leicestershire with the reception in the grounds of the brides family home, in a large marquee. "The choice of church and reception venue were easy ones to make as both places were a big part of my life growing up", says Ginny, "We decided to hold the reception at my dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house which is an old hunting lodge with farm land. The house used to belong to my Grandparents who bought it almost 30 years ago and when my Grandfather died my father took it over. The house is set on the outskirts of a small village in the gorgeous Leicestershire countryside and every time I go back to visit I feel like I am on holiday at a country retreat! The field to the right hand side of the house was the perfect place to put up a large marquee which was needed for the large amount of guests! Both Mike and I are from large families and having travelled and lived in a few countries over the years we have picked up quite a few friends along the way, around 240 guests joined us from as far away as Botswana, Australia, New Zealand, and Mauritius to celebrate our marriage." 46

One of the highlights of the reception for us and the guests were the Bongo drummers from Drum CafĂŠ. Hours before the reception they hid a bongo drum under the tables for every guest. After the main course, three drummers entered the marquee playing their drums and asked the guests to look under the tables and pull out their bongos; they then had the whole marquee playing the drums in unison for over 20 minutes creating different beats. Even the grannies joined in and loved it! Everyone told me that when you go to pick your dress, to make sure you keep an open mind as any ideas you have are soon changed! I went believing that I wanted a slinky evening style dress with diamante and either a halter neck, or some form of straps. I was adamant I did not want a strapless dress! I ended up falling in love with exactly the opposite! A strapless, structured, duchess satin, stunning dress with a lovely long train.
One thing was certain - we wanted to be traditional and keep with old themes as we both love antiques and history. I wanted to do something that would be completely different from other weddings and wanted the theme to be strong and to reflect a part of our upbringings, lives and personalities. So we came up with a British Colonial theme, which incorporated both of our backgrounds (Mike being from Botswana and me from England) and also worked perfectly with the canvas marquee.
All in all, the day turned out better than we could have imagined. I feel blessed that we found Ian (our photographer) who was able to document the whole day with amazing photographs that captured the emotions of ourselves and our guests perfectly from start to finish. He was so discreet on the day that we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even realise he was there most of the time! We will cherish his photos for the rest of our lives and show our children and grand children!
