ell jars work brilliantly as centre pieces. They can showcase personal items and give each table a unique character.

New Nostalgia for 2014

H

ere, owner and creator of styling company, Liz from Mad Philomena gives us an insight into what trends to look out for in 2014:

A

s modern life gets more hectic we are developing an increasing fondness for all things vintage. With vintage comes nostalgia, the sense of looking back on happy moments from the past, appreciating heirlooms and items that have had another life and can tell a story of their own.

I

n 2013 a Grace Kelly exhibition in Montreal tapped into history and nostalgia by sharing her dresses, photographs, notes and even love letters. These personal belongings from another time hold memories and capture a certain style and look which can translate beautifully into your wedding day.

from something old and translate it into something new.

H

and Mirrors are a personal favourite of mine, they capture an era where life was simpler and makeup wasn’t applied in 5 seconds before rushing out the door to a meeting. I used them to great effect at a recent wedding where they represented each table on the table plan, and featured on the place names. Add extra details such as little charms and ribbons, buttons and bows, they all help add to the overall effect. Simple, original and nostalgic all in one.

W

M

E

H

e’ve already seen the emergence of vintage dresses and 1950’s tea length styles so lets look and how you can weave grace & nostalgia into the detail of your Wedding day.

lements such as teacups and birdcages have become popular in recent years, but there’s more out there to still be explored. How about using old mannequins as an icon. These add a touch of history, vintage style and quirkiness - especially great if you are into fashion or dress making. Hire a full size mannequin and attach luggage labels to act as your table plan, or integrate them into your invites, centre pieces and place names. It just needs a little imagination to take inspiration

any of us have loved ones who are no longer with us but we still want them to feature in our day. Old photographs are the perfect way to include someone special, or reflect on wedding days from previous generations.

ow about including photos from parents or grandparents wedding days in vintage frames. Frames can easily be sourced from local charity shops and dont worry if they are all a little different - this will add to the vintage feel. Larger pictures can form part of a display on a cake or reception table, or try frames in bell jars on your tables instead of table numbers.

relatively cheaply - simply print out some old photos, add them and include in anything from your bouquet, to your cake or your candle jars. Keeping the photography black & white will add some consistency to the overall look.

T

he frame itself can become a nostalgic item which runs throughout the day. Heres a great example of frames incorporated into an invitation. Depending on the style of the frames and what you choose to include inside them this is a great

way to make things really personal to you and your families.

The story of Orange Tree

Weddings

O

perating in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, Orange Tree Weddings aims to transform village halls and spaces into romantic wedding venues – creating a vintage-inspired, unique wedding venue.

M

el Adams; formerly General Manager of the Orange tree on Shakespeare St in Nottingham found a gap in the market when looking for a quirky but affordable venue for her own wedding.

M

el dreamed of a vintage-inspired, personal wedding reception in the style of the Orange Tree pubs. The group has venues in Leicester, Loughborough and Nottingham, all with a reputation for excellent food, style, cocktails and a relaxed but attentive service.

O

range Tree Group managing director Gareth Smith said: “Mel has been involved in hosting many wedding receptions and events for the Orange tree group. She knew exactly what she wanted for her wedding reception, but discovered that no-one was offering this type of service. She inspired us to launch our own concept. It means that brides and grooms across Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire will be able to have stylish and affordable wedding receptions in local village halls. The weddings bring together all the expertise we have in food, catering and design; creating something different for couples who want a personal wedding that’s within their budget. Couples can leave all the planning, organisation and set-up in the hands of us to enjoy their day to the fullest extent.”

15

M

el, is joined by Jules who with her design experience, has the vision to create an amazing stage for the big day. This perfect partnership has proved to be a winning combination, both of them being passionate about helping to make every couples’ wedding day perfect.

S

J

F

ules adds: “No matter how basic the chosen village hall looks in the cold light of day, we can turn it into a romantic decorated scene using our eclectic collection of vintage finds from luxurious fabrics, endless lighting, and impressive collection of vintage china and tableware. We also provide hand-painted signage and props with personalised messages”.

ince Mel’s wedding in 2012, Orange tree Weddings have organised receptions for half a dozen couples in various halls throughout Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, with bookings coming thick and fast for 2014. eedback from all of our brides and grooms has been overwhelming: all couples comment on how well organised the experience has been, resulting in an amazingly relaxed and informal day.

R

eal cask ales and cocktails are a speciality of Orange tree weddings, as is the home cooked food. They offer a range of different food options to suit different party sizes and budgets. They can even create a bespoke menu, using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. Save The Date | Issue Twenty One

A quintessential English rose wedding

} Welcome to the wedding of Sarah & Tom:

Save The Date | Issue Twenty One

37

T

his wedding will leave you completely speechless and completely inspired. The beautiful bride Sarah talks us through her pretty as a picture, English country fete wedding day:

“W

e got married in the pretty parish church of St George’s in Barton-inFabis, the village where I grew up, just south of Nottingham. We held the reception in a traditional pole tent marquee on the lawns of Thrumpton Hall provided by www.bondmarquees.co.uk.

T J

he marquee was so beautiful it made me gasp when I went inside for the first time.

ust fabulous, complete with wooden poles and flooring and rustic ropes wrapped around the central posts. It was perfect. Thrumpton Hall itself

is also spectacular. A stunning backdrop for any event, we used the grass to the side of the marquee for lawn games, including giant jenga, croquet, badminton and boules. These were a great hit with both young and old!

I W

think it is safe to say that we are anglophiles through and through and love all things traditionally old and English.

e therefore wanted a nod to the simple things that make England great- hog roasts, lawn games, Pimms, roses, cow parsley, bunting and ale! So the style was quintessentially ‘english’ and countrified. I guess you could say a little bit ‘traditional english country fete’ with all the cow parsley, bunting and lawngames but quite low key, natural-looking and informal with a home-made feeling too.

38

I

became mildly obsessed with Pinterest when planning my wedding- the essential tool for any bride and pinned a million pictures! One of the very first dresses I pinned on to my Big Day board was ‘the one’. I went for - the exquisite Parma Opal, by Jenny Packham, and got it from the lovely ladies at www.missbushbridalwear.co.uk.

I

am well aware of the fact I was so lucky to be able to wear such a beautiful creation. The silhouette was a little bit ‘Downton’, with the empire line shape, but also very art deco, encrusted with millions of the milkiest, delicate crystals that appealed the insatiable magpie in me. One of the things I liked most about the dress is that it covered my upper arms (my least favourite part of me) with the prettiest cape.

I

have to say that our wedding was a little ‘DIY’ and we didn’t use too many suppliers. We are lucky to be blessed with some very talented friends and family who we took full advantage of, in the nicest possible way! They were so generous with their time, support and creativity! My husband’s very good family friend, Sally Marshall, was responsible for the stunning bouquets and table decorations.

W

e picked bucket loads of cow parsley from the verges in the village and church yard that was then used to adorn vintage crates, jugs, bread bins and fire pails (sourced from ikea, family friendly neighbours!) Sophie at www.sophiesflowerco. co.uk did the 3 beautiful bouquets we presented to our mothers and my aunt as thank you gifts on the day.

W

e used www.beetledays.co.uk for our ivory wedding camper van, ‘Brocky’. Daniel who runs the business there was great. Very reliable, friendly and helpful and the van was a real beauty.

A

family friend, Will Smith from www.barnbacon.co.uk sourced our wedding ‘cake’, which was a wonderful stack of locally-sourced cheeses. My talented brother (http://www. behance.net/markbowerman) was responsible for our save the date luggage tag, invitations and order of service designs. We went for a cow parsley logo that was repeated (everywhere!) and made into stamps and printed on recycled brown paper, luggage tags and envelopes.

I

went all out and got my shoes and hair piece from www. emmyshoes.co.uk in Islington. They were bespoke, due to the fact I wanted a low heel, so as not to tower over my husband to be!

I

was the last one standing and danced all night in my shoes so well worth every penny in my books!

Save The Date | Issue Twenty One

39

T

he lovely Bekki Mitchell did my hair www. rebeccamitchell.co.uk and managed to almost exactly replicate the picture I found online. She was very understanding and calm as I chopped and changed my mind every few seconds on the day!

O

ur photographer Lee Garland (www.weddings. leegarland.co.uk) is not only a talented photographer, but just the nicest chap to have at your wedding- everyone loved him! His service is personal and attentive and of a very high standard.

F

rom the moment we saw Lee’s work, we knew that he would do our wedding day justice. He and his colleague Emma were so unobtrusive, friendly (and busy!) on the day. They took nearly 6000 shots throughout the day (?!), which Lee cleverly whittled down to 1500 that we then took away with us on a memory stick, in both black and white and colour.

T

he other genius service Lee offers is his vintage photo booth www.vintagebooth.me which was a massive hit with all our guests.

M

y advice to any future bride would be that DIY is fun, satisfying and can save you money, create a board on Pinterest and search the web for inspiration and don’t be afraid to mix and match your styles- if you like it, go with it!”

Winter

Wedding

Flowers With Michele Gledhill

Traditionally when we think of winter flowers, we imagine stark whites and festive reds and many winter brides try to avoid these in the hope that their wedding doesn’t look too ‘Christmassy’ or twee! I think these colour palettes can look amazing with the right accent colours to soften their look! An all white winter colour palette doesn’t have to be stark and uninteresting...when paired with lavish silvers and fresh, crisp greens, you can create a stunning effect. By using different flowers in the same colour such as these hydrangeas, lilacs, roses and ranunculus, you can create texture and interest.

Hollie & Matthew were married on the 10th August, under a tree in their garden, ‘Having looked at a number of beautiful locations, we didn’t find anywhere that we loved as much as we did the garden! Having it at home also allowed us to create our dream wedding on our budget. We had 135 guests and it took us a full year to plan’.

A

s we got married at home, we didn’t have to pay a venue hire charge and so were able to spend the money elsewhere. Our first purchase was an incredible 3 tiered choccywoccydoodah cake!

I

am lucky enough to come from an incredibly musical family and therefore enlisted the help of my dad’s ukulele band and my brother’s band as the entertainment. My granddad made beautiful sign posts, Matt designed all the wedding stationary and my mum (who keeps bees in the garden), helped us with wedding favours!

C

hoosing a wedding photographer was extremely important yet incredibly easy for us! We were passed Chris Fishleigh’s details and instantly we knew we wanted him to take our photos. Chris has an incredible ability to capture the emotion of the day without using posed shots. He has a beautiful photography style that Matt and I LOVE.

M

y dress was a Rembo Styling dress accessorised with a charm bracelet I was given as a child as well as a beautiful sapphire bracelet belonging to my mum. I wore a simple gold heard pendant and a flower crown on my hair.

M

att wore a Burberry Prorsum suit with Church’s shoes (he wanted to be dressed in British brands to sit in with the English garden/meadow theme) and the bridesmaids wore full length, champagne coloured dresses from Coast.

S

ince we were trying to keep the wedding feeling as natural as possible, we tried to do the same with our decorations. We used ivy and hydrangea in the tents, natural foliage outside and hung some paper lanterns from the oak tree. Since the wedding was very family focused, my dad decorated his tractor! We also made huge sofas for guests to sit outside on out of hay bales. We wanted to create a meadow garden, natural themed wedding.

W

e made all the decorations ourselves! All napkins were personalised with everyone’s name. The table numbers were made from a fallen tree and painted by myself and Matt. The bottles used in the middle of the table to hold the flowers were dug up from the garden. We provided wedding day ‘I-Spy’ for the kids with disposable cameras. The signs were made by my granddad, my grandpa was our (very popular) master of ceremonies.

T

here were so many highlights! Walking down the make-shift aisle (my dad mowed an aisle for us to walk down) with my dad, seeing Matt under the tree with all of our friends and family. Having confetti thrown all over us, getting up on stage and playing our favourite song (Tiny Dancer by Elton John) on the ukulele just to made a few!

T

he biggest surprise was seeing everyone we knew under one tree! It was a very emotional experience!”

~ Selecting the stylist with ~

63

C

hoosing a good wedding hair stylist will help you look and feel beautiful on your big day. It will seriously make the morning of the wedding a damn sight calmer! It will also enhance your chances of creating a great looking album of wedding photos.

W

ith a bit of patience and time, you will be able to select just the right hairstylist to help you create your perfect look. There are three main aspects to think about when searching for your hair stylist...

Your Budget:

~

Your budget is common referencing point when looking for suppliers when planning your big day and it should be considered even when searching for your hair stylist. Start to think about who will need their hair styling. If you have an entourage of bridesmaids and a mother that wants titivating and you are offering to pay then your budget will need to be seriously considered. When looking for your hair stylist, ensure there is a balance between the hair stylists rates and their portfolio. It goes without saying that generally if they have a strong portfolio of work and a vast amount of experience, you will pay for it.

The style of the hair stylist: I’m personally trying to evolve bridal hair. From wedding photographers to wedding dresses they have all transformed over the years, for the better in my eyes. Hair stylists on the other hand are being dragged along kicking and screaming! It’s important that on your search to find your dream hair stylist that you immediately like their style of hairdressing. If you imagine a chic, romantic red carpet style you need to see that in the stylist portfolio.

A relationship : The last important aspect in my eye is that you are comfortable and relaxed with the stylist. They will play a big part in the morning of your wedding day and you don’t want someone who will irritate you. You want someone you can trust and rely on that will turn up on the day and style everyone’s hair effortlessly. Job done!

Some key points to think about... * Allow plenty of time before your wedding day to select a stylist. The ideal

amount of time is about 6 months to a year. If there’s someone you must have, book them as soon as you know your date.

* Ask around for referrals. Who did your friend’s wedding hair? Ask family

members you trust, someone should be able to guide you towards at least one reliable and talented hairstylist.

* Collect a list of four or five hairstylists and their details, this will help you stay organized. Gather quotes and view their portfolios. Check out one or more of the hairstylists on your list.

* Schedule a trial with each stylist. This will certainly help you decide on the person you wish to have on your big day.

* Maintain good communication with your hair stylist. Be clear about dates and timings.
