I HAD BEEN PUTTING TOGETHER A SECRET WEDDING BOARD ON PINTEREST FOR MONTHS

T

his wedding which took place at one of our favourite wedding venues, Calke Abbey blew our socks off. This venue is truly a blank canvas for you to let your imagination run wild and Giulia and Wayne did just that – their creativity and eye for style is clear for all to see. A pure delight of a wedding. Here’s the super stylish bride Giulia to tell us more; “I knew exactly what I wanted as soon as I got engaged, I had been putting together a secret wedding board on Pinterest for months, collecting many ideas of my dream wedding. I wanted the whole day to commence in a rustic surrounding, an old barn, with lots of lights to create the perfect romantic setting! After hours of trawling the Internet and visits made to various venues trying to find the perfect place that was completely unique, I nearly gave up as I couldn’t find anywhere quite ‘rustic’ enough.

I was then told about Calke Abbey, which even though was close to home, I had never heard of and it never came up in any of my searches. My fiancé and I decided to visit on their Wedding open day and as soon as we walked in we knew we had found our venue. The Riding School is adjacent to the old stables that are part of the Calke Abbey estate; a grade 2 listed building with exposed brick work, a blank canvas that you can completely make your own, creating the perfect rustic feel we were after! I loved the fact that it was bare, that

it had nothing in it, no minor detail putting me off like other venues had and the grounds; well they are absolutely stunning. We fell in love instantly!

I wanted to create a stylish wedding, beautiful to look at and a little different to the norm. I felt it was really important to add our personality to the day with little touches, such as reading our own vows, which were humorous but loving, and also threading an Anglo Italian theme throughout the day to reflect our heritage. This theme inspired the food, the bridesmaids arrived in fiat 500s and we even danced the Tarantella, a traditional dance from the south of Italy where my family are from. Most importantly we wanted our wedding to be fun.

I have been to weddings that have had little atmosphere and I wanted the complete opposite to that. We chose to have two bands on the day; a low key acoustic duet (KaBen) for when guests were arriving, continuing into our drinks reception and then an evening band (Marc and Abi) that really got the party going. We wanted EVERYONE dancing. Live music was really important to us.

The little touches took a lot of planning, I am a perfectionist and tend to dither and change my mind a lot over detail, taking forever to make a final decision.

I CHOSE TO USE NUDE TONES BUT WITH A CONTR A STING DEEP DARK AUBERGINE WHICH W O R K E D R E A L LY W E L L

My advice to brides would be to not rush on this and take your time.

Through wedding events, Pinterest and Instagram I got many ideas and really fell in love with modern calligraphy. I found someone for the right price via Etsy (Elerihafdesigns) and I would highly recommend her.

For my favours, one of my closest friends runs her own soy candle company, Evermore (www.evermorelondon.com) and her scents are to die for. It was a no brainer asking her to make our favours which were custom made, bespoke for our day. These went down a treat with all of our guests!

For my colour scheme I chose to use nude tones but with a contrasting deep dark aubergine which worked really well, also a little different. I chose to link this with gold and light grey, although I had about 50 shades of grey which wasn’t intentional but worked really well in the end. I had a lot of green foliage too, just because I love it so much and think it looks so beautiful. My florist Justine from jflowers. co.uk did such an amazing job, she listened to what I wanted and executed everything perfectly, I was so happy with everything she did for the day.

Wayne, my now husband, was going to wear a navy blue suit with a burgundy tie to link in with the colour scheme, but turned around to

me one day and said, “do you know what, I’m going to get a burgundy suit!”. I had my doubts at first, but I trusted him and it paid off. He looked incredible and the tailor really admired his admiration to be bold and do something a bit different from every other groom!

For me, choosing a dress was very daunting. I never wear dresses and being petite, not even 5ft, I didn’t want to feel overwhelmed by a dress; I really didn’t know where to start. I would have worn a jumpsuit if I could! I wanted something simple but elegant. I found a few designers online but they were all international and the logistics of getting the dress to the UK and having to return it if necessary was just sounding way too complicated.

So I was really stuck. I eventually came across this beautiful store in Ashby called Cicily Bridal and spotted a dress in the window, I booked an appointment straight away and fell in love with the Charlie Brear collection. As soon as I put on the Sada dress I knew it was ‘the one’ different to what I had in mind but perfect for me in every way. I chose to wear this with a long lace trim veil by hmveils, that paired with my flower crown was my outfit sorted! My day was everything I could have wished for and more.”

“Eucalyptus on Mass demonstrates the simplicity but beauty of foliage. Featuring an incredible gown by Caroline Castigliano and a suit by Reiss.

My role as a wedding planner doesn’t limit me to just dealing with paperwork. Planning weddings is an intricate process; from creating an initial design concept, mood boards, sourcing quotes and organising suppliers to ultimately delivering a perfectly balanced and timed wedding day. Putting together a beautiful design concept is one of the key elements in planning a perfect wedding and something I love!

As a wedding planner I get to hear lots of wonderful ideas brides and grooms have. I also have to be creative myself and come up with suggestions and design concepts for my clients. One of the trends I am still hearing a lot is the bride wanting a really organic and natural look. I wanted to demonstrate how effective a wedding would look without using a single flower, just foliage!

The easiest job for me in planning this shoot was handpicking my suppliers. I get to work with and meet some amazing and very talented individuals with my job. It was amazing that everyone I asked jumped at the chance to work on this shoot…”

Two years now – although having dreamt about it for over 10 years it seems like we’ve been doing it forever! Living the dream as they say...

How would you describe the ‘Alexandra Anne’ experience?

First and foremost, fun! Personally, we think it’s important to get the right balance between a luxurious experience and one that you feel you can just ‘be you’, relax and enjoy. This normally begins with some refreshments – there are always plenty of Jammie Dodgers & bottomless cups of tea here to keep the energy levels up! Our two hour appointments allow time for brides to really indulge in the dress buying experience. It’s such a special and exciting time that shouldn’t be rushed.

We are not waiting to roll our eyes at the first sight of your finest and trusty grey underwear! With a luxuriously spacious, comfortable and private changing room all to yourself, you can feel calm in the knowledge that we deal with anybody’s worries discreetly.

There are no limits to what can be achieved – let your creative bridal imagination run wild – we love it!

Diversity. Whereabouts are you?

We are very fortunate to be hidden away in a beautiful barn on the Chatsworth Country Estate in Derbyshire.

The views are just incredible here with all the fresh air and time out a bride could want! That and a cheeky slice of cake from the farm shop just over the road...

Which designers do you stock?

To begin, our first love, Charlie Brear. She is a design goddess... followed closely by Jesus Peiro whom we have fallen head over heels for! We have a new designer, Rembo Styling, coming in for 2017 which we are super excited about and other beautiful creations by Pronovias, Emma Hunt and So Sassi to pore over. Topped off by the truly glamorous Eliza Jane Howell who has recently been crowned Best Bridal Designer by the top three national wedding magazines.

What do you love most about working in the bridal industry?

Where do we start?! In general I just love being totally absorbed in this creative industry – there are so many wonderful and clever people conceiving all kinds of amazing ideas for couples. To be swept up in dresses designed by people I have admired for years is just a pure pleasure. Seeing the smiles and confidence this gives to our brides and their families is honestly priceless.

Wendy, owner of Wild Thyme talks to us about her love for the business and what flowers mean to her; “When I get my delivery of flowers for a wedding, I feel like a child in a sweet shop! To me flowers are my tools of my art, just as any medium is to an artist - paint is to a painter, or marble to a sculptor. But flowers touch every sense, they are visual, they are tactile, some have an extreme presence by their scent – they are overwhelming in every sense! As a floral stylist, you have the ability to change the feel, and atmosphere of a venue, to reflect your bride and groom – and that is what I love. Whether its bringing the outside in (I hire a variety of trees from bay trees, topiary to small olive trees), making an area feel peaceful and serene, or vibrant and an explosion of colour – flowers have that

I think often flowers are forgotten about in the list of importance when it comes to the wedding day itself, but they are often the thing that links the whole day together. W

e were delighted to be approached by the National Trust yet again to work with them as their exclusive wedding coordinators for Clumber Park. There are five sites licenced to hold weddings within the park but the two we are most excited about were the focus of the summer shoot.

The first, the Parsonage, stands in the centre of Clumber’s 3,800 acres of park and woodlands which is nestled within Sherwood Forest.

It is a private suite of rooms comprising of the Georgiana Room, where the ceremony takes place and Hawkins Study which plays host to the wedding breakfast. It has its own private entrance and stunning views overlooking the Parsonage Lawn, which is south facing and the perfect place for Pimms and lawn games and across the breath taking lake.

We really wanted to capture the beauty of the rooms and felt that the amazingly talented Leigh Mcara was the person to do that. His photos are dramatic but elegant and he was really able to depict the feel of the Parsonage. We asked the wonderful husband and wife team, Scott and Laura from Avant Garden to dress both rooms for us and as usual we were stunned by how they were able to transform the venue with their amazing floral arrangements and centrepiece. They also provided the most stunning flower crowns and bouquet for our models. Because we had wanted to show off the venue we had Kate from Splendid Signs produce some gorgeous chalk boards.

Thank you to Lizzie Malcolm who provided us with a beautiful gown but also made the amazing two piece for Ruth. The models were made over by the lovely Hayleigh Louise and their hair styled by the gorgeous Alison Jenner.

When it came to the Hawkins study we really wanted to show off the remarkable wallpaper that absolutely sets the room apart from others, as well as Laura and Scott, once again providing us with a centre piece

we totally fell in love with, Rachel from Wedding Event Design Studio also helped us out with her striking range of sequinned table cloths and Adam and Sara from Executive Linen with tableware. The incredible Becky Lord finished our table with stationary especially designed for the shoot, pulling the duck egg blue and gold from the wall paper which matched perfectly to the exquisite cake made for us by the very busy and very talented Charlotte from Cherry Blossom Cakes.

When we had finished in the Parsonage we headed over to the Glasshouse. Built in the early 1900’s, the Glasshouse is a truly unique setting for an intimate civil ceremony, with the stunning backdrop of the historic Walled Kitchen Garden and its vibrant array of flowers followed by drinks and canapes in the Rose Garden. Within the Glasshouse itself we didn’t need to do anything at all in the way of styling, the building is able to speak for itself, just imagine walking down the ‘aisle’ surrounded by the eye-catching gardens. The shoot in the Rose Garden was my favourite part of the day. I love how the garden is walled off from the rest of the Gardens and this is inspired me to think, Secret Garden with a twist for the style of the shoot. Laura and Scott dressed the table in moss and beautiful bright blooms, birdcages and candles and it was exquisite.”

Daniella recalls, “Our pre-wedding shoot was a great ice-breaker when we got to know Adrian & Claire and had some fun with them trying out a few ideas in front of the camera. Dan wasn’t so keen to start with, but by the end he was so relaxed and that really showed in Adrian’s photos.”
