WHILE COMPILING OUR January/February issue, I added a surprising new skill to my resume. Herding cats — the four beloved cats at E. Shaver, Bookseller, to be exact. I wasn’t alone in my efforts. Imagine for a moment our art director, Rebecca, photographer, Jeremiah and two gracious staffers at E. Shaver all clicking our tongues and shaking a box of treats and holding studio lights and pleading “Here, kitty, kitty!” just to get a cat to keep its head facing the camera. The proof is in the pudding (head to page 92 to see what I mean), but the whole affair got me thinking of another saying altogether, one suitable for The Family Issue: It takes a village.

Savannah’s tight-knit community is that village for many of us, and in the pages that follow you’ll see examples of people stepping up to help local families thrive. Consider Over the Moon Diaper Bank (page 41), founded by a local mom who took matters into her own hands when it came to creating the region’s only diaper and period supply bank (congratulations are also in order; Over the Moon recently received

official nonprofit status and is now a part of the National Diaper Bank Network). And help doesn’t have to be heavy — on page 74, meet the School Lunch Heroes banishing boring brown-bag meals one sandwich at a time.

As we embrace a new year, it’s important, as ever, to consider the past. Artist of the High Seas, page 103, chronicles the life and artistic works of Savannah native William O. Golding, who was kidnapped from the riverfront as a child in the 1880s and spent most of his life at sea, eventually turning memories of his world travels into incredibly detailed drawings, on display at the Jepson Center this spring. Golding’s life story reads like a screenplay, though curator Harry DeLorme points out it’s “one that nobody knows about.” Until now, that is. Will Hollywood come calling to little old Savannah? It wouldn’t be the first time.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, business mergers are about money — one business selling off to the financial benefit of another. But sometimes, there’s more to the story, and sometimes the story is a pretty darn good one. Such is the case with the recent merger between Savannah-based Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty and Charleston-based Daniel Ravenel Sotheby’s International, where the namesakes share more than a profession and Southern roots. Dunn and Ravenel both hold the belief that while business is about making money, it’s just as much about doing honest, good work and giving back to the community you helped build.

“You want to be part of that which is bigger than you are. You want to be helpful and be respected. These kinds of things are important.” — Daniel Ravenel SM: When I did some research before speaking with both of you, I couldn’t find any “dirt.” That stood out to me.

Most businesses that have been around for 40-plus years tend to have some skeletons in the closet.

Dunn: Real estate has been tough for me because I really am a

highly ethical person, and when I see people get away with unethical practices and make money doing it, I just say thank you, God, for enabling me to lead a life that people can respect.

Ravenel: Celia is a leader in the sense that she’s an example a lot of people look to. Got to a Rotary Club meeting with her; it’s like walking into a coronation hall, and she’s going to be the queen.

There are a lot of reasons I wouldn’t do this [merger], but there are also a lot of reasons to do this, and a large part of it is Celia’s personality and accomplishments.

She’s been my pal, my confidant and my best friend in the real estate business for probably 30 or 40 years. It’s a perfect fit, and I think that’s why she called me. We’re both working for our agents, for our clients and for the community. We believe that all of these things are entwined.

Dunn: Dan’s company has a very honorable, ethical way of living and practicing real estate, and as long as I’ve known him, I have had high regard for their ethics. Being an honorable person and businessperson has always been so important to me.

SM: On that note, you have both led or served on numerous boards and committees over the years, including Rotary Club, YMCA, Junior League, historic preservation societies and churches, to name a fe . hy is ivin ack important to you?

Dunn: In order to live with yourself, you need to be giving back

to your community, to your family, to your country. You have to focus on making it a better place for others.

Ravenel: How do you see somebody else who needs something and you’re unwilling to provide it? The answer is you don’t if you’re a human being. You want to be part of that which is bigger than you are. You want to be helpful and be respected.

These kinds of things are important.

SM: Savannah and Charleston have long been compared to one another. hat are your thou hts Ravenel: People come to our cities because of the architecture and the

history, but what they discover is that it’s primarily the people and how friendly they are that makes our cities wonderful.

Dunn: We need to realize that we’re both beautiful, historic towns and brag on each other. Even though Sotheby’s is known for its luxury residential properties, we all are very caring about trying to improve the residential opportunities and living conditions for everyone. o ill this mer er enefit avannah in articular Ravenel: I think it’s going to widen the market for Savannah, Bluffton

and Hilton Head. We’ve had a lot of people come to Charleston whom we’ve sent to Savannah over the years. There’s a synergism between two great organizations, and it helps the market, makes it more fluid. I think that Savannah isn’t as pricey as Charleston in some respects, and I think Savannah is a pretty good investment right now and will continue to be.

SM: But this isn’t retirement, right, Celia?

Dunn: Oh, no. I am an associate broker. And I will continue

to sell, but mainly I want people to call me, and I will help them, or I’ll get them the agent who will help them the most. It was a big decision to sell our company. I’ve seen a lot in the years I’ve been in business — good and bad — I just hope that people will remember me as someone who has always tried to do the right thing.

Middle school is a formative time for kids, and, according to national nonprofit Junior Achievement, it’s also an ideal time to think about career readiness and financial literacy. This February, Junior Achievement of Georgia opens the JA Colonial Group Discovery Center, a state-of-the-art facility located on the Georgia Southern Armstrong campus. Although the center is intended for middle schoolers in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Evans counties, a slice of Savannah is front and center: Students will enter the facility through a replica of the Forsyth Park bandshell, surrounded by historic landmarks.

The facility features JA BizTown, where sixth-grade students can interact within a simulated economy and take on the challenge of working a job, marketing a product and making personal purchase decisions. JA Finance Park offers an authentic simulation for seventh- and eighth-grade students to experience their financial futures, learning to make routine budget decisions and building skills and confidence amid today’s economic environment.

“We’re so excited to bring a JA Discovery Center to coastal Georgia,” says Camille Russo, vice president of marketing. “This center will allow more than 15,000 middle school students annually the opportunity to experience life like an adult — all in a beautiful, mini version of Savannah.”

Then and Now Seven decades of St. Andrew’s School Written by JESSICA LYNN CURTIS

WHEN WE THINK of St. Andrew’s School, most envision the esteemed independent school built in 1978, nestled halfway between downtown Savannah and Tybee on its idyllic Wilmington Island campus. But St. Andrew’s had its beginnings years earlier — 75 years ago, in fact, when in 1947, the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah, located downtown on Bull Street, founded a pre-school.

“Then, like many schools, people fell in love with their school community, and so they kept adding grades and matriculating up,” says St. Andrew’s Head of School Dr. Kelley Waldron.

Independent Presbyterian Day School was born. But, as grades kept being added so that students could stay together, the school began to run out of room.

During the 1970s, Independent Presbyterian’s governing body deemed it necessary for Savannah to have another quality college preparatory school. At the same time, Wilmington Island was being developed as a residential community. It seemed the ideal location. Parents and business leaders worked together to raise money and secure a site for this new school. IPC relinquished its control, allowing the school to become an independent, nonprofit institution governed by a board of trustees. It was given the name St. Andrew’s on the Marsh to reflect both its Scottish heritage and winsome island setting.

“The natural environment and ecology of where we are is amazing,” Waldron says, noting that Betz Creek, a tidal creek, runs right through the middle of campus. “There are a couple of grade levels where you’ll see the kids actively down by the creek, in the creek …”

In addition to incorporating its coastal setting in other ways — such as programming with Tybee’s Burton 4-H center, beach clean-ups and more — Waldron is proud of the work they have done to push forward the conversation about what it means to educate students for the future, to become part of a global society.

“Back in 2008, we became the only school in Savannah to become authorized as an IB (International Baccalaureate) World School.

It’s a program that requires a two-year authorization process and offers a prestigious

The program really teaches students to think critically, to develop skills that will be important in their future work.” In 2009, St. Andrew’s was also the first pre-K–12 school in the country to implement a one-to-one iPad program.

“It’s exciting for me to see the growth of the school from the place of being a really nurturing, warm, kind community,” says Waldron. “That’s always been in the DNA of St. Andrew’s. We’re able to educate our students well because of the relationships we’re able to form.”

Scott Searcy, director of public relations, points to the way older students partner with and mentor younger students. Some current students are also legacies of those who went to the original Independent Presbyterian Day School. “We’re still connected to that founding from 75 years ago,” he says.

Waldron says one of the best parts about her job is spending potentially a span of 15 years with any given family.

“The amount of change that happens over that period of time in a child’s life, in a family’s life,” she says. “We get to partner with them, to see the whole scope rather than one bad moment, to help raise people from young kids into young adults.”

To wit, she recalls one recent encounter with an incoming senior.

“Our parents welcome our senior class every year with posters and collages of their times at St. Andrew’s. I walked up to a family, and their kid is a great kid, but he was an eighth-grade boy once, and eighth-grade boys can be challenging, you know? And I said to him, “You're here! We made it!”

His mom got really teary-eyed, and I got teary-eyed, because this is the work of educating students — to raise them into young adults,” she says. “It’s really a very special thing.”

Reaching for the Moon Coastal Georgia’s only diaper bank provides supplies and hope Written by JESSICA LYNN CURTIS

WHEN KATIE GRIFFITH gave birth to her daughter, she became aware of something that only parents and caregivers are truly keyed into: the cost of diapers, and just how rapidly babies and toddlers go through them.

According to data from the National Diaper Bank, the average cost of diapers for one baby is $92 per month. One in three families in the United States cannot afford diapers, and there are no federal assistance programs that help with the cost.

Griffith wanted to do something to help this situation, known as diaper need. She and her husband looked up organizations that provide diapers to those in need and made donations. “But when I looked to volunteer and do something here in Savannah,” Griffith recalls, “I didn’t find anything.” Griffith says she “chewed on it” for a couple years and kept waiting for someone to start a program. , They never did. “Finally, I was like, let s do it! I just felt like it was a calling.”

The seed for Over the Moon, the diaper and period hygiene bank founded by Griffith, was planted. She shared the idea with her friends, and they were excited to help. The work of gathering donations and support began, with an ongoing mission to bring awareness of basic health and hygiene needs, diaper lack and period poverty. The name is multifaceted in its meaning — a nod to Johnny Mercer, the Moon River and even menstrual cycles coinciding with lunar cycles — but the bank’s guiding principle is simple: “We believe in dignity for all, no matter how big or small.”

First, though, Over the Moon needed a place to store donated supplies. Early on, Cyerra Britt, now a board member, reached out to Griffith to ask how she could contribute. It was kismet, because Britt already had a warehouse for her three-generation women-owned business, Gibson Good Tools, Inc. Today, in addition to her own company’s products, Britt’s warehouse is filled with 60,000 diapers and 40,000 pads (Christ Church Episcopal has also donated storage space). Acquiring storage was a vital step in Over the Moon’s ability to collect and distribute diapers to those who need it most.

“Diaper need means you have to cut back on other basic essentials so that you can afford to have diapers for your children,” Britt says. “And in Savannah, more than 22 percent of children who are under 6 years old live in poverty.”

“We want people to know that these issues exist. , It s a solvable problem, but we need everyone to pitch in.”

Over the Moon doesn’t stop at diapers. The organization distributes period packs, incontinence supplies and other hygiene-related items across the region through provider partner agencies, at community giveaway events and directly to families as needed. Their initial timing was perfect: the bank was able to begin distributing supplies just as the pandemic began and demand grew greater. But the need has only intensified, and there has been a huge increase in requests for diapers and period supplies across the country since the start of the pandemic.

The pandemic also lengthened the process of becoming an established nonprofit organization, but it’s official now, and Over the Moon has been able to join the National Diaper Bank Network and the Alliance for Period Supplies.

Still, it’s making a difference locally that’s most important to Griffith and Britt, who are working to provide supplies in Savannah (with the help of the local Junior League chapter) and in the Golden Isles. Over the Moon is the only organization of its kind in Coastal Georgia. “And you know,” Griffith says, “being on the coast, in the event of flooding or a hurricane, even the Red Cross doesn’t cover the need for these types of supplies.”

Education and advocacy are equally key. “Hygiene staples like period supplies are not only not covered by any government assistance programs, but also they’re actually taxed items in the state of Georgia,” Griffith explains. “We want people to know that these issues exist. It’s a solvable problem, but we need everyone to pitch in.”

VAN TYSON’S CHILDHOOD days were spent riding around The Landings looking, with intense curiosity, for fresh clearings in the woods and mounds of red clay piling up high above the ground, the tell-tale signs of new construction.

Now, as the owner of Tyson Custom Homes, Van maintains the same fascination with the process, one he explores each day on his job sites.

In 2018, with three children in tow, Van and his wife, Lisa, decided to put down roots in the neighborhood that both of their families call home, with Van spearheading the home’s design and construction.

After months of meticulously planning every square foot, the Tysons got approval from The Landings to begin building their dream home — but just after the last detail was finalized, Lisa called Van with a surprise.

“Honey, are you sitting down?” she asked Van. “Because I am pregnant.” The shock and excitement were evident in her voice, Van recalls. And with another baby on the way, he went back to the drawing board, designing a new home for their soon-to-be family of six. The new design, a Lowcountry home featuring touches inspired by Van’s Southern design icons —Charleston-based architect Bill Huey and Sam Liberti of Low Tide Design in Bluffton, S.C. — exudes an elegant charm with tabby features and vaulted ceilings, walls swathed in nickel gap and ceilings of pecky cypress.

From the moment guests enter the front door, the architectural details are apparent. A lighted barrel vault of richly stained pecky cypress overhead draws the eye upward, flowing seamlessly into the living room’s coffered ceiling, outfitted with the same wood.

The main bedroom's vaulted, beamed ceiling adds a palatial feel to an otherwise down-to-earth space.

In the gleaming white kitchen, designed with a little help from Allison Willis of Linen and Line Design, the island’s curved banquette has become the family’s favorite spot to enjoy a meal together. The accompanying heart pine table is also a testament to the ingenuity of Van’s carpenter.

“We built it out of four pine chunks and put a heavyduty coating on it inspired by the tables at Spanky’s in Savannah,” says Van, laughing. “Wear and tear and children; those tables have been there forever and can take a beating.” With two highchairs pulled up, the couple and their four children (Will, 7; Gray, 4; Waylon, 2; and James, 1) fit snugly around the table each evening.

Opposite the living area, the primary suite offers the couple a grand retreat, complete with gorgeous beams, nickel gap walls and ceilings and an expansive, vaulted ceiling. The ceiling is so high that once, a child’s lone balloon drifted up to the center and, out of the couple’s reach, was stuck for a month until it deflated enough for them to catch. “Balloons are now for the living room only,” Lisa insists with a smile.

For their children’s bedrooms, Van added elements that would be fun and flexible as they grow up.

For their daughter, Gray, a pinkfilled room was de rigueur, complete with delicate pink wallpaper and a decorative, beaded chandelier.

Her older brother, Will, received a custom bunkbed with coastal-inspired railings designed by dad to facilitate ample room for sleepovers.

And though each child’s bedroom is perfectly tailored to their needs, “all they want to do is play outside.”

Van says. After dinner, you can find Van and Lisa snuggling baby James on their custom porch swing as the older three children tear across the yard, giggling until the mad dash for bedtime begins.

On Saturday nights, the avid Georgia football fans invite their parents and cousins over to watch the Bulldogs on the back porch as the sun dips down behind the pond.

“We are a tightknit crew.” Van says of their extended family.

From his perch on the back porch, where the family often hosts their parents and cousins, Van can see his favorite feature of the backyard: a tiny oak sapling standing just six inches high, planted when the family moved in.

Van imagines the children sitting under the mighty oak 20 years from now — its roots, and that of the family — growing deeper and stronger on Skidaway Island.

9 a.m.: I take the youngest kiddos to preschool

before heading to Friendship Coffee Company to work for the morning — they have the best coffee and coworking space on Wilmington Island, and there are always other creatives working remotely there. If I’m heading to our Tara Skinner Weddings and Events downtown office, I stop by Gallery Espresso for a latte and a little inspiration. My day-to-day work fluctuates a lot depending on the needs for that week, but often it includes checking in with brides and vendors, reviewing my latest freelance project (usually with my former coworkers at Visit Savannah) and checking the calendar for any school events coming up as the class mom this year.

12 p.m.: When I’m back on the island, I often

pop into Polka Dots for gifts for any showers or weddings coming up. They carry beautiful products with wonderful service — they’ve even brought my items out to me and taken my card back in to pay when my younger children have fallen asleep in the car with me! For lunch, I’m all about Good Greens’ salads.

Megan & Greg White For event planner and marketing professional Megan and investment consultant Greg, a day in the life with three kids and three pets is busy — and fun 5:45 a.m.: I start my day with exercise

with a friend in my neighborhood, and Greg works out at Lake Mayer with his F3 Nation men’s group — it’s always easier to wake up early with accountability! Then, I’ll make coffee or tea, sweetened with Savannah Bee Company wildflower honey to enjoy while I read and pray before the day really begins. Our kids are 2, 4 and 7, so I soon start the rush of getting everyone dressed and ready for the day. When I have meetings, I’m usually in something from Red Clover Boutique, and Greg is likely outfitted by J. Parker Ltd. There’s just

something about walking in and knowing the names of everyone helping you shop.

7:30 a.m.: With music playing in the kitchen, the kids sit together at the bar for a quick breakfast. Once Greg takes our oldest to school and heads downtown to his own office as an Investment Consultant at Investment Performance Services, the little ones and I make sure our two dogs and the beta fish are taken care of before I check my emails and calendar for the day ahead. Our one-stop shop for the pets is Bentley’s Pet Stuff.

3 p.m.: If it’s cooler out and school is in

session, it’s nice to spend some cozy, quiet time inside at the Live Oaks Library, checking out the latest books on display or grabbing a craft bag to go before ballet class or tutoring.

5:30 p.m.: The best family time of the day — Greg joins us as we play outside in the front yard with neighbors riding bikes or throwing the baseball. On nights that I don’t cook, we keep an eye out for food trucks like Krazian or The Five Spot Mobile. It’s an extra special day when Jenny’s Treats on the Streets pulls through with something sweet. The kids can hear that music from miles away!

8:30 p.m.: I check emails or wedding plans for my brides and grooms once the kids are all in bed, and it’s time to catch up with each other after a full day of moving in different directions to get everyone everywhere for everything. We try our best to lay out clothes for the next day, and we pack lunches — Greg draws a character on the brown paper bags for the little ones. It’s a new post-pandemic lunch ritual now that we don’t take lunch boxes anymore.

10:30 p.m.: I try my best to take a few minutes to myself before ending my day to clean my face and add a touch of the superfood antioxidant face oil from Nourish. After that, I set my alarm for the next morning and rest for the beautiful, busy day ahead!

Kristen Russell of Brighter Day Natural Foods Market All meals should start with good, wholesome ingredients. The other secret is a good mix of textures and flavors. It’s been a long time since I packed school lunches, but I was a pro back in the day and prided myself on lunches for which all the kids wanted to trade. Leftovers are your best friend: they can go on a sandwich, on a salad or just be eaten cold. The trick to making a school lunch special is to put a lot of little flavors and dishes. Fresh veggies are a must, like radishes at this time of year.

Fruit is an overlooked but amazing and interesting ingredient on sandwiches. Try some figs with your turkey, or apples with your hummus, or a cherry jam with your ham. Mixing salty and sweet makes a great sandwich, as long , as it s fructose and not a lot of added sugar.

At Brighter Day, the avocado and baked cheese sandwich is for sure our most popular. It’s got the chewy, meaty flavor of the baked cheese (people say it tastes like bacon) with the smooth, healthy fat of the avocado and the crunch of fresh sprouts on good bread. It’s a great balance, and you can replicate it at home with all manner of similar ingredients. Use whole-wheat bread made with organic flour, so there aren’t all those gross additives. Hummus or other bean or nut spreads are a great way to replace cheese or meat on a sandwich to keep it light and vegan.

And the best way to stay on an in-season, local diet , is to shop the farmers market!

It works because the turkey is smoked.

Sweet and savory. For our Van Gogh sandwich, we have a honey mustard with regular chicken and a cider-marinated sweet pepper. The aioli on our club sandwich is what makes it great.

When it comes to sandwiches, it’s the small touches that make a difference — fewer than two minutes of effort will do. Our pickled veggies, we keep them extremely simple: a gallon of vinegar, a gallon of water, a half-cup of sugar and salt. We have a spicy and a regular every day, depending on what’s in season.

Watermelon and pineapple surprise people a lot.

Also, you can’t chintz on meats. Cheese, you can kind of chintz on. But meats? You can’t. For instance, I recently offered a pizza sandwich for the sole reason that the stick pepperoni we got was great by itself — and it was really great with a marina and provolone. So, if you’ve been out to eat recently and brought home leftovers, you can dress them up with a nice sauce to make something special.

As for my favorite sandwich? Hard salami, ketchup, aioli, potato chips, pickles, provolone, lettuce, and tomato smashed on cheap white bread. Smashed.

I’ll stand by that.

The same rule applies to school lunches as to any type of entree: You need something fatty, something crunchy, something salty, something acidic. Then I like to add something herbaceous like the thyme on our grilled cheese, or tarragon with mushrooms.

For kids, keep it simple, and add one extra little thing. I have three grown kids, but I know they would have been really stoked to have some potato chips layered in their egg salads, or a peanut butter and banana souped up with maple syrup. I pre-season veggies, like a sprinkle of salt on cucumbers and letting them sit for 20 minutes, or dunking carrots in water before dusting with salt so when lunchtime came around, the seasoning would be there — that was one of the things they liked.

At Finches, the grilled cheese is the perfect example of what keeps selling. It’s been on the menu since day 1. There are a million ways you can riff on it. We’ve paired a fancier cheddar cheese with the American cheese for extra ooey-gooey-ness. Or you could add Old Bay to your butter and brush your bread with it. For our thyme butter, let a pound of butter get soft, add 25 grams of chopped garlic, another 15 grams of picked thyme with a nice little chop, and 8 grams of salt. There’s no cooking involved in that, and it’s a good flavor enhancer to spread on bread.

They took the heart of our core values and applied at Big Bon sandwiches. Our sandwiches taste great because they care about the food they make. And I think that’s one ingred ient you can't omit in any kind of sandwich, or food in general.

Sixty percent of our sandwich sales is the 912, which is bacon, egg and cheese smeared in herb butter on a toasty, chewy, yummy woodfired bagel. It’s the ultimate comfort food. Our chefs are always coming up with great cream cheeses and Korean- or Asian-inspired , sandwiches. Kimchi cream cheese anyone? It s delicious. Bon Mi, a word play on Bahn Mi, shows that sandwiches can be so fun.

Try different combinations, like pickled red onions (adding acid and crunch is always a win) or with our Donna Sauce, named after Donna Parrish, a Canadian by birth and long-time Savannah resident. She’s the one who inspired me to start Montreal-style, wood-fired bagels here in Savannah. Take four cups of mayo, 1/2 cup of whole grain mustard, 1/2 cupsof pureed confit garlic, and add salt and pepper to taste.

What’s the secret to a great sandwich? You’ve got to put care into it. We always say you eat with your eyes first.

I always say a recipe is only as good as its lowest-quality ingredient. For us, the sauce makes the sandwich. We’re known for our sauces. We don’t shred the lettuce — we use a whole leaf lettuce so it makes a waterproof barrier with the bread. And you can always put the sauce on the side. You want to respect the sauce.

What are you trying to get the end user to feel? You’re not just trying to fill their tummy. For us, we want them to leave saying our motto, which we modify to “Shoot yeah!” for those under 13 and over 100. That’s our goal. That’s a feeling, a little note, a heart, a star, something that gives it a personal touch or says, “Have a great day” — that’s the difference between just giving them something to eat and making them feel special. And when all else fails, I like peanut butter, banana and honey on a good white bread.

BROCHU’S FAMILY TRADITION, helmed by Michelin-rated, James Beard Award-nominated chef Andrew Brochu, was one of Chicago’s most anticipated restaurants of 2020. You can probably guess what happened next.

But while the pandemic may have halted Brochu’s plans for a Windy City space, it also brought him to Savannah — his wife Sophie’s hometown — to be closer to family (Brochu himself attended high school in Georgia). “Once we took the change, made the move, and started looking for spaces in Savannah, that’s when it became the right call [to move the restaurant],” he says.

The long-fought process of opening Brochu’s Family Tradition has finally come to fruition: The restaurant debuts at Station 24 in Starland this spring, bringing with it a cuisine and atmosphere meant to evoke the feeling of a relaxed family gathering. “Our concept was always inspired by home,” Brochu says. “Now, it feels even more personal.”

ON THE BIG MOVE

I wouldn’t say there was ever a defining moment where moving the restaurant was the absolute right call. In fact, it was less about the restaurant and more about our lives on a personal level. During the pandemic there were many unknowns and a lot of discussion about the future.

Sophie and I were both born and raised down South, and we’d always talked about moving back, eventually, to be closer to family. There’s a deeper sense of family and home [here].

ON WHAT TO EXPECT

Guests can count on a boisterous gathering place with quality, casual food and drinks.

It’s inspired by the jovial family gatherings I grew up being a part of: crab boils, backyard parties, that sort of thing.

This is why we went with the name Brochu’s Family Tradition. It’s all about family, hospitality and gathering together over a shared meal.

It’s not only the food scene here, but in general, what food in the South does for me. We’re coastal, and we have ingredients that I love cooking, from the produce to fresh seafood. The subtropical climate lends itself to a comfortable atmosphere, where we can gather inside or be outside most of the year. There’s also so much room for growth in Savannah, and I’m excited to be a part of that. Southern hospitality and nostalgic food were always an underlying theme of Brochu’s, and really, everything I’ve been doing in my career. I want to build a place where guests feel an overwhelming sense of neighborly hospitality. Being in Savannah, I think that’s just natural. Folks know genuine hospitality and they’ll recognize it at Brochu’s as soon as they walk through the door.

ON WHAT MAKES A MICHELIN STAR MEAL

I’ve worked in so many different styles of restaurants, from mom-and-pop dives to some of the most high-end places in the world. I’ve found a massive amount of inspiration and beauty on both ends.

And some things I couldn’t stand, but I learned from them. At this stage in my life and career, I believe in cooking like a mom or a dad or a grandma: Care about what you are cooking, spend the time to build flavors, cook what makes you and others happy and just really love the craft. I find that the most complex, delicious food for me is food that’s cooked all day over a single pot — and enjoying that process along the way is key.

“EVERY SINGLE DAY a person comes into my office and says, ‘I’m going blind,’” says optometrist Dr. Erika Morrow of ForSight Eye Care. She finds this amusing because the patient is almost always exaggerating, much like my own mother does whenever she attempts to thread a needle without glasses.

“If glasses help you see perfect, then you do not have what is considered low vision,” Morrow explains. “But if you are wearing your best corrective eyewear and you still can’t see perfect, then that would be considered a vision deficit.”

My mom has ideal vision with glasses and is not, in fact, going blind, but an alarming number of people experience low vision and blindness. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 4.2 million Americans 40 years and older have uncorrectable vision impairment, referred to as low vision. Of that number, more than 1 million are considered blind. The leading causes of low vision and blindness are primarily age-related eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, the latter of which the CDC reports is the leading cause of blindness in adults — yet is preventable 90 percent of the time.

But eye disease also affects children. Nearly 3 percent of children younger than 18 have low vision or blindness, most often caused by amblyopia, commonly called “lazy eye,” and strabismus, which is an imbalance in the position of the eyes.

This adds up to a large population of people who not only struggle to see, but also find everyday activities such as driving, cleaning or cooking either challenging or altogether impossible.

An ounce of prevention Thankfully, there are preemptive actions you can take when it comes to vision impairment, and it starts with what you put in your body. “Eating green, leafy vegetables is really important,” says Morrow. They provide lutein and zeaxanthin — nutrients that can protect your eyes from inflammation. She recommends getting Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and flaxseed, and zinc in the form of red meat, beans, seafood, nuts, eggs and other dairy. And what about carrots being good for your eyes? It’s true: Morrow explains that vitamins A, C and E are essential to eye health. She recommends orange-colored fruits, sweet potatoes and, yes, carrots for a hit of vitamin A; citrus fruits, red bell peppers, tomatoes and strawberries for vitamin C; and avocados, almonds and sunflower seeds for a dose of vitamin E. As far as what to avoid, steer clear of high-fat and smoking. “Diets high in fat are bad for the body because they create inflammation, and we know that can make macular degeneration worse, and smoking increases your risk of macular degeneration by seven times,” Morrow says. You’ll also want limit prolonged sun exposure (wear sunglasses with UV protection!) and be

sure to wear contact lenses correctly. “I have patients who have low vision and blindness because wearing their contact lenses improperly resulted in scarring or infection.”

Morrow also stresses the importance of regular eye exams, particularly for patients with glaucoma. “I recently had a patient in his mid-50s who never had an eye exam before because he didn’t see the importance,” Morrow says. “Now, he is literally going blind from glaucoma, which is completely treatable if you’re getting regular checkups.” Not all exams are equal, either. “If a retailer is advertising a ‘free eye exam,’ you’re only getting a free vision check for a prescription,” Morrow explains. “A comprehensive eye exam is one where the eye pressure is checked and nerves are examined.” This can be completed by either an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Get Resourceful Low vision and blindness cannot be corrected, but they can be treated or offset with vision aids and adaptations. Cecilia Emery has spent more than 40 years helping people with low vision and blindness and is an occupational therapist at the nonprofit Savannah Center for Blind and Low Vision (SCBLV).

She always begins by asking her clients, “What is the most important thing to you?” — whether that be reading, writing, cooking or working with your hands — and then works to find adaptations for those everyday activities, allowing the client to locate and use the things they need most. “We refer to these as ‘low-tech’ adaptations that could be made in addition to using low-vision aids like a CCTV (closed circuit television) magnifying glass, text-to-speech reader or even an app,” she says.

Emery points out how getting connected with resources like SCBLV is particularly important because clients not only grieve the loss of their sight, but the resulting limitations can also lead to social isolation and depression. She recalls one client who had been very active until vision loss prevented him from driving. “He felt his life was pretty much over,” says Emery. SCBLV loaned him a CCTV, and he was able to write his memoirs. “That gave him a thrill and changed him,” says Emery. “I see that time and time again when I introduce people to things that will open up their world.”

SCBLV also offers vocational rehabilitation for those who want to return to work or go to school to learn a new trade; an orientation and mobility program that teaches people how to use a white cane to maneuver in the community; technology assistance; and support groups. Additionally, an on-staff social worker is able to link people to other community resources that may be beneficial.

While we’re all destined to get older, only some of us will experience low vision and blindness. But for those who do, life is far from over given the medical expertise and organizational resources in this community to help them see and function as independently as possible. * • An estimated 93 million adults in the United States are at high risk for serious vision loss, but only half visited an eye doctor in the past 12 months.

AN ENCHANTING NEIGHBORHOOD bookshop run by cats would make for a pretty good novella. And at E. Shaver, Bookseller, it’s happening in real time. According to Annie Childress, the shop’s operation and events manager, each cat has its own special role in making things hum (or perhaps purr). “Mr. Eliot is our head of public relations,” Childress explains with a wink. “He is Instagram famous, and that only goes to his head most of the time.” His littermate Bartleby, a Creamsicle-hued fellow, is the floor manager. “If not for Bartleby’s keen eye and judgement, the store would not function to the high level that it does,” Childress says. Skimbleshanks — a tortie female whom Childress describes as the shop’s “most paranormally in tune” — is the back-room supervisor, but also has a knack for keeping children company (Childress says she’s deeply patient with kids, though less so with adults). Kitten Morticia, the newest member of the team, is the resident office cat. “She loves to lounge around in the sunshine,” Childress says, “and on top of the invoice you are trying to process.”

CAT OWNERS OFTEN share that a cat finds you — and not the other way around. Such is the case at Terracotta, where Amelia has made her home for the last 15 years. “She was given to us by a customer who came upon her in Telfair Square,” explains owner Christine Nussbaum. “My store manager at the time talked me into keeping her at the shop, because she couldn’t have pets at her apartment.” Nussbaum admits she was reluctant at first — “We went through some challenging times during adolescence with her causing havoc in the shop at night” — but Amelia has grown into a mellow cat with a calming presence, adored by staff and shoppers alike. “At night, she’s often sought out by customer who know of her or just discovered her when she struts in the window displays,” Nussbaum says. “We can’t imagine this place without her.”

SEABOLT REAL ESTATE is a family business, right down to the pets. Boudreaux, the agency’s designated “top dog” wasn’t Seabolt’s first dog — that honor belonged to a beloved pup named Andy, technically Boudreaux’s uncle. But Boudreaux’s owner, associate broker Shannan Hunt, says Boudreaux, a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has taken on his role as top dog with aplomb and clearly enjoys the views (and cushy confines) from Seabolt’s Oglethorpe Avenue office. “Although he’s still a bit wild, he’s the biggest sweetheart and loves getting treats and hugs from his Seabolt family,” Hunt says. “Boudreaux is a true delight.”

“PIGEON IS ACTUALLY the inspiration for our brand of dog treats and the name of our shop,” says Daniel Cannon, “so it only made sense that she gets to hang out here.” Cannon, who owns the dog and the shop along with Erica Deeb (the pair also own Savannah Pet Sitters), adopted Pigeon after she was paralyzed in a car accident and left at a veterinarian’s office.

“We got her some good physical therapy, a heavy-duty wheelchair, and we haven’t looked back since,” Cannon says. With her good nature and unique mode of transportation, Pigeon makes a lasting impression at Cannon and Deeb’s downtown shop.

“Many out-of-town visitors come in to pick up something for their dogs back home,” Cannon says. “They’re excited to meet a new dog on vacation, and everyone is always interested in hearing her story.”

WILLIAM O. GOLDING (1874–1943) was an African American mariner and artist who shared a lifetime at sea in more than 100 vivid drawings, all from memory. But one can only guess at what Golding might have been and done in his life had the choice been his.

The adopted son of William A. Golding, one of the first African American members of the Georgia General Assembly, Golding might have followed in his father’s legislative footsteps; had an entire career as an artist; or done something else altogether. But one fateful day in 1882 charted Golding’s course for the rest of his life.

As he described in a 1932 letter, young Golding (sometimes written as Golden) was 8 years old and playing with his cousin at the Savannah waterfront. The boys spotted a ship called The Wandering Jew. The ship’s captain and his wife convinced Golding to come aboard for a “tour.” The nefarious couple showed Golding below deck. When he came back up, they were floating out to sea, the Tybee Light a blinking beacon in the ever-growing distance.

The little boy had been kidnapped.* It would be more than 20 years before Golding saw Savannah again, and almost 50 before he returned to stay.

What happened in between is not fully known, but it is clear from his drawings that Golding worked aboard many different ships: whalers, merchant ships, the steam yachts of New York’s elite and even a man-of-war battleship. And beginning April 1, the Telfair Museums will present Hard Knocks, Hardships, and Lots of Experience: The Art of William O. Golding at the Jepson Center. This will be the largest

museum survey to date of Golding’s works, featuring 72 drawings loaned from private collections and museums.

Harry DeLorme, Telfair Museums’ director of education and senior curator, explains that although there are many unknowns about Golding’s life and harrowing kidnapping, documentation shows that he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1890 and was in the Navy until 1902.

“That would have been the period of the Spanish-American War in Cuba, and the war in the Philippines that followed that,” DeLorme says.

“And he did draw pictures of the Philippines and of a gun ship from the Spanish-American War.” Golding was in contact with his family and back and forth from Detail from Whaler Petrel Savannah beginning in 1904, sadly 15 Chasing Whales in the Artic years after his father’s passing. But he [sic] Ocean, 1933, pencil and crayon on paper, 9x12 inches continued to work aboard ships, the only life he had known since early childhood.

Newspaper listings from World War I show that Golding served as a merchant seaman during those years, and in 1917 was a survivor of a German U-boat attack in the English Channel. He also claimed to have rounded Cape Horn, notorious for being the world’s most dangerous ship passage, 23 times.

By the early 1930s, Golding was living in Savannah with his wife, Josephine. It seems he had retired due to health reasons, as he spent many years in and out of Savannah’s U.S. Marine Hospital. This hospital is where he began to draw his adventures at sea. According to Telfair Museums, these were “vibrant, remarkably detailed and expressive pencil and crayon drawings” that depicted “harbors from the East Coast to China, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as his home port of Savannah.”

“He mixes time periods together,” says DeLorme, referencing a drawing of buildings along the Savannah River in the 1930s that also showed buildings from his childhood.

“Another great piece is called Cape Horn, where he includes mythical elements like a Cape Horn post office with people strolling around it, while the real Cape Horn is very rocky and forbidding. And the most significant feature that you find in almost all his drawings is the sun drawn as a compass rose, as you might see on a nautical map.”

Ahmauri Williams-Alford, assistant curator of historical interpretation and programs, believes one of the most important pieces in the collection is named after Golding himself. “He titled it Wm. O. Golden, and Harry pointed out that it looks like the figurehead on the ship might be a self-portrait,” Williams-Alford says. “We don’t have any photos of what he looked like, so that was a nice find.”

DeLorme hails Golding as one of the great American artists of the 20th century — but also one of the most underrecognized. “It’s an incredible story, and one that nobody knows about,” he says. With the Jepson Center exhibition on display through Aug. 28, Telfair Museums hopes to change that.

by Georgia-born painter Benny Andrews, this exhibition will feature important works on paper, all created in the late 20th or early 21st century by well-known and emerging female artists: Faith Ringgold, Deborah Willis, Emma Amos, Selma Burke, Sonya Clark, Gwendolyn Knight, Samella Lewis, Janet Taylor Pickett, Howardena Pindell, Alison Saar, Betye Saar and Lorna Williams.

Assistant curator Anne-Solène Bayan points to the relevance of the themes represented — the environment, spirituality, womanhood and the legacies of slavery in the United States.

The exhibition will also “highlight the versatility of printmaking through an examination of the artists’ varied stylistic and conceptual approaches,” she says.

Curated by Erin Dunn, Telfair’s curator of modern and contemporary art, the exhibition will remain on display at the Jepson Center through May 1.

SOME KIDS START playing organized sports as early as 3, which sounds pretty young when you say it out loud. However, it’s around that age when children need to develop collaborative and social skills, says Dr. Kristi Hofstadter-Duke, children’s behavioral psychologist at Savannah Behavioral Pediatrics. “It can be a really helpful, pro-social activity.”

Anne Weisel’s son, Ben, in fact, was that prime age of 3 years old when he toddled onto the soccer field, following after his father, who had played soccer in college and later coached at the college level. “Ben grew up around soccer and was headed out on the field with Dad and hanging out with the big kids a lot,” she says. From there, it was a fairly easy decision for him to start playing soccer with Savannah United Soccer Academy when he turned 8.

Similarly, Dana Reeves’ daughter, Carson, followed in the footsteps of her late aunt, who was a volleyball coach in West Virginia. Even though Carson had been committed to dance from age 4, training in ballet and lyrical, her close relationship with her aunt kept her in touch with volleyball.

When Carson was 12, she started playing recreational volleyball. Next, she played for her junior high team at Richmond Hill Middle School and also joined the Club Savannah team. By the time she was halfway through her first year of club volleyball, she had dropped dance completely: she had fallen in love with the sport.

Of course, not all kids want to follow in a family member’s footsteps. This was the case for one of Emily Stigall’s two daughters, Sara and Rachel. Since Stigall swam all the way through college, her natural inclination was to sign her daughters up for the summer swim league in 2019, when Rachel was 5 and Sara was 6. While they both took to the water, it was only Sara who wanted to swim in the meets.

Rachel much preferred to hang out off to the side and play in the smaller pool. She had another sport entirely on the brain: gymnastics. “Even though I was a college athlete and really wanted my kids to be swimmers, taking a step back and listening to my kids [was more important],” Stigall says. So, she took Rachel back to “that place where they did the cartwheels.”

Sometimes it’s not only the young person learning a new sport but the parent as well. Had Stigall not given Rachel a choice, the world of gymnastics would’ve remained a mystery. “As a parent, as much as you were the football captain and you really want your kid to play football, they might not want to do it,” Stigall says. “And that’s okay because it led her to gymnastics, [something] I probably would have never just naturally put her in.” But Rachel was far from a fish out of water. After seeing Rachel flip and tumble, Summit Gymnastics asked if she’d like to try out for the team. Now, at just 7 years old, she’s already qualifying for state-level competitions. (Sara, for her part, swims competitively with Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team and has also qualified for several events at the state level).

But what about burnout? Before she had committed to swimming, Stigall herself played basketball, softball, volleyball and even cheered for a bit, embracing the freedom of youth and choice. Stigall puts it plainly: “Figure out what you want but don’t limit it to one thing. Try out everything when you’re a kid.”

It was a lesson that 13-year-old soccer player Ben took the initiative to learn on his own. Ben had been surrounded by and involved in soccer since he was a toddler; that’s essentially a decade of eating, living, breathing dedication to one sport. He hadn’t tried any other sports and ultimately took a year off from soccer. “It’s probably the best decision we made as a family,” Anne Weisel recalls.

During his hiatus, Ben played basketball and ran cross country for his school, St. Andrew’s. Sure, he enjoyed

expanding his horizons, but he also discovered different strategies and skills that he could apply to soccer.

He bolstered his personal motivation and avoided stress injury by stretching his body in ways that soccer hadn’t allowed, Weisel says. By the time spring rolled around, he was eager to get back on the field, easing in by picking up some goalkeeping sessions at Savannah United. “We took a step back and let him have that [time],” Weisel says, “and he realized how important soccer was to him for himself, not just because Mom and Dad signed him up for it.”

Hofstadter-Duke agrees with Weisel’s assessment.

“Regardless of how great the coaches may be, or how much emphasis there might be on collaboration and all those good things that we want to teach, if it’s not interesting to children, they’re not going to participate to the fullest,” she says. Often, it doesn’t take much to know a child isn’t interested. Sometimes, they’ll even just come right out and say it, much like how then-5-year-old Rachel told her mom “No, I’m good,” when asked to join a summer swimming league with her sister.

Just as a family can support a child’s decision to take a break, sophomore Carson Reeves’ family supports her in her drive to step up. Outside of Club Savannah and the school volleyball season, she puts in intense hours of hard work through clinics, college camps and training programs. At the start of any given school week, she’s often communicating with teachers on days she’ll miss because of tournaments. During long car rides to and from games, she’s completing as much schoolwork as she can while bonding with her mom. Dana Reeves’ job requires lots of travel, but she flies from work conferences to Carson’s tournaments, or vice versa, trying her best to never miss seeing her daughter experience the joy of all her hard work paying off.

“It’s a lot of money to spend and a lot of time to give as a family,” Weisel says (Reeves would surely agree). “I think the best advice I can give anybody is to go into it embracing the moment you’re in.” And if good things come down the road?

Says Weisel, “ that’s just worth celebrating down the road.”

WITH A JET-SETTING, decades-long role in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Jimmy Humphrey has logged his fair share of airline miles. But it was only after several invitations that on New Year’s Day 2022 he found time in his busy schedule to wave to the crowds alongside polar bears and penguins from an Arctic-themed float at the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California.

“They caught me at a weak moment,” he jokes.

Humphrey is no stranger to representing the fraternal organization: He’s served in nearly every high-level position as part of Savannah’s Oglethorpe Grand Lodge No. 1, established in 1842. The international distinction of Sovereign Grand Master took him around the world to Poland, Iceland, England and more — places where the Odd Fellows are still big even as they’re aging out in the U.S. One of the few surviving fraternal orders left over from the early 19th-century boom, the Savannah chapter counts 50-plus members who gather at an eclectic clubhouse on Bonaventure Road. While the past few years have been quieter than usual due to the pandemic, the order continues to raise money for scholarships and for the Arthritis Foundation, and pitches in on the odd job around town, like building wheelchair ramps for homes. (As Humphrey describes it, many of the functions of the fraternal orders established in a male-dominated society, like taking care of widows and educating orphans, are now the province of government programs or insurance companies.)

Humphrey’s daughter Monica McMasters, owner of B Street Salon, says much of the Odd Fellows’ charity work is done in secret. Her childhood memories include ringing doorbells before dropping holiday meals off on doorsteps and driving off in the family’s beat-up Cadillac and, as an adult, she was on the receiving end of the order’s helping hands.

“My dad would always tell me, ‘If you ever need anything, always look for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows sign,’” McMasters says. “Then a number of years ago in Maine, my car ended up in a ferry incident — as in, my car was on the ferry but I wasn’t — and one of the local guys helped me.”

To Humphrey, that type of personal connection is the point of the whole affair, recalling innumerable people his family “has gotten to know and love” through the organization.

“You need somebody when you stumble and fall who can pick you up by the scruff of your neck, dust you off and give you a pat on the back of encouragement,” he says. “And you need to be able to do that for others to get some worth in life.”
