I DECIDED TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL: half way through my junior year in college, when I was a music major. It suddenly dawned on me that I would have to do something after I graduated! I had worked as a nurses’ aide at Memorial Health University Medical Center during high school, and I had always enjoyed science. My dad was a physician — a nephrologist, actually — so I knew a bit about the life. So I went for it and have never been sorry.

I WAS ATTRACTED TO THIS FIELD OF MEDICINE: Since medical school, I’ve been interested in kidney physiology and diseases as well as high blood pressure, and I wanted to help people with serious chronic medical issues. I find the long-term relationships I have with my patients immensely rewarding, emotionally and intellectually. Nephrology is a great fit for me.

I LOVE IT WHEN MY PATIENTS SAY: “She’s my doctor!” I grew up in Savannah and am proud to help my community.

April Garrity

Balancing life as a GSU professor and a mother, April’s practice reminds her that some days will be solid and smooth, and some days will be shaky – on and off the mat!

Why New Yoga Now?

NYN teachers are incredibly knowledgeable about yoga, meditation, breath-work and the anatomy and physiology to support the practice. Through their encouragement, I feel so empowered to grow my physical and spiritual practice.

Do you practice in-studio, live-stream, following pre-recorded classes or a combination?

Even through Zoom I feel connected with the people and the space at NYN and will practice any way I can. But I do prefer in-studio!
